Ry, one the best, teachers on Xterra. I'm a women, 60 of age. And Bless that I found your video's. It is very hard to find anything for a Nissan Xterra.Special a 2007 But I believe it's because, there good trucks. I Love my Xterra 2007, I have done a lot of maintenance. On mine. But it is a very strong truck. And I feel it's worth. But I hope you could teach. A step by step, how to fix the horn and airbag. The horn went first and airbag. Light now blinks all the time now. And now I'm due for inspection sticker. I have fixed many things myself. Because that's how good you teach. You speak, very well and with a calming voice. And your video's are Top Notch! With that all together. Let's just say your Awesome😊
Great video, as usual. I have a 08 Xterra with 265,000 miles. So far everything is going fine, I think I'll make it well past 300k before I hit something big. Your channel has been a true gift to me as I'm not mechanically inclined at all, yet your vids are very clear and I've been able to follow along easily, for example just a few days ago was able to tackle brakes/rotors with confidence because of your clear guidance, and soon I'm going to put on foglights. :)
Hi I'm glad to hear that at 265,000 miles your car is or "was" running good. I noticed this comment to the video is about a year old. How is the Xterra doing? I only ask because I have a 2007 Xterra with 219,000 miles on it. I've had it only a year and still runs really good though I am hearing that high pitch whining the last couple weeks. Only one owner before me but with so many miles on it, I'm getting scared about how long I have before something big goes wrong. I am very diligent on the fluids being checked and changed if needed and oil exactly on time but I love taking road trips and I drive a lot of freeway miles daily, so I'm really glad to that you have that many and going strong cause everything I read said about 200,000 is about all I will get out of the truck. But I absolutely 💯 love this SUV and don't want to get rid of it, as I'm a country girl and love the backroads, camping, kayaking, you name it and this SUV kicks ass off roads. So thank you for sharing, I feel like mine could have several more road trips left, she drives beautiful still! "Ry the car guy" Thank you so much for all your video's, you've helped me with several little updates/Makeover project's! Your so clear and thorough and it makes everything so much easier
@@cassandrawilson552 I still own the Xterra and it's still going strong/fine. I do a lot of doordash/ubereats/grubhub food deliveries, so I can really put on the miles quick, that said while the Xterra gets decent gas mileage for an suv, it didn't make sense for me to keep using it as my main delivery vehicle, so I also picked up a Camry for deliveries, therefore I haven't been as hard on the Xterra for the past year or so. However, I loaned it to my younger brother who had need of a vehicle, and he has been driving it steadily, no problems. He also does some deliveries, but nowhere near as much as I do. I'll have to check what the speedometer is now, but so far the Xterra has performed like a champ. It makes a slight rattle now, but that's a cosmetic thing to do with a loose heat shield. One of these days I need to get down there and cinch the heat shield tight to prevent the rattle, lol sounds bad but not really a problem.
nice vid. Accurate and correct being vehicle specific. Not generic basics like most vids out there. All Xterra owners take note: this video is spot on.
@@everready19373 it's not a jab at it in general. I was taking a jab at my own Pathfinder.. I bought one that was trashed but the selling lot made it look the part... I would own one in good condition in a heartbeat. I still want an xterra.
I own a 2011 Pro-4x. Bought it new, replaced the radiator the first day under warranty. 175K miles later, still not a problem. These things will run good long time if cared for properly. Mine runs like it did the day I brought it home. OME lift, ARB air locker up front and still many mods to go to make it the ultimate off road beast.
I bought a 2010 Pathfinder and went to change the cabin air filter. Ended up finding a service record stating the truck I had just bought ended up having about 100k more miles on it than what was stated. I’ve had to do a bunch of work on it now that I didn’t think I’d have to do. Thanks to a lot of your videos I’ve been able to much of the work on my own.
Just bought a 2015 Xterra Pro-4X. Automatic because I had a disengaged father. Your Xterra videos will make maintenance on my X super easy, barely an inconvenience.
SMOD hit my Xterra around 140K miles. For anyone who thinks it's affecting them, my Xterra didn't go anywhere when I shifted into Drive. I restarted the car and it worked fine for a few days. Then it happened again. I was dumb and didn't think much of it, kept restarting and things worked again. Then my car wouldn't work in reverse... I knew something was bad. Then it wouldn't shift higher than 3rd gear. Needed to do a full transmission rebuild and cost about $4,000.... believe Ry the car guy when he talks about SMOD. Very real issue with the 05-10 Xterras and if you haven't had SMOD yet, please look into it and save yourself the money and hassle. Thank you Ry the Car Guy, your channel is awesome!
The 2005 and up Nissan Xterra and Frontier share the same 4.0 V6 Engine. 2015 was the last model year for the Nissan Xterra in North America. Up to 2019, the Nissan Frontier had the same 4.0 V6. For the 2020 and 2021 model years, the body style stayed the same, but the Frontier received a new 3.8 V6.
06 Xterra 216,xxx miles. I've done or had done rebuilt transmission at 204,000 miles(3rd ring gear failure, no warning prior to failure), new catalytic converters, engine and transmission mounts, all engine gaskets, all suspension components(including anti-sway bushings and links and leaf spring bushings/shackles, ball joints) inner and outer tie rods, VIAS valve to name the biggest jobs. Everything else is original and working properly. Still haven't had an issue with timing chains and I bypassed the radiator years ago. It's a great vehicle and I see many others on the road.
2008 Xterra is now my secondary vehicle that I use for plowing and as a back up 4WD vehicle in the winter if I need it. Years ago I was afraid of the SMOD so I took off the transmission cooler lines from the radiator and installed an aftermarket transmission cooler that I connected the lines onto. I live in the snowbelt / salt belt of Central NY so rusting is a big problem. I had rust thru of oil pan, transmission lines and the rear diff cover. Replacement cover and oil pan were flex seal coated to avoid any future rust damage. Rodents are a big problem in my rural area. I had mice get into the air box and eat the air filter. Particles of air filter material got onto the MAF sensor and the car did not run right. Mesh screening needed to be placed over the air inlet tube to prevent rodent access. Early in the ownership of the vehicle, all of the heat shield covers on the exhaust system got loose and rattled incessantly. They were all removed. I would love to find a replacement rear hatch door as parts of it are rusting away due to some sort of a water leak the destroyed the locking mechanism and froze up the wiper motor. Other than that, it has been a dependable truck.
Cabin Filter: I just acquired my first xTerra yesterday, a 2007 X, 224k miles, and the first thing I replaced was the Cabin Air Filter, it was NASTY. Thanks for all you do and share, you will be hearing more from me
Bought a New 2012 that year , now with 200k miles , beside the regular maintenance everything is great ! Sadly not selling them in USA anymore! Great videos thanks a lot for the help !
Great list. Thanks for putting it together. This format was fine, and understandable right after your move. I’m glad I found your channel. You are a great teacher & and wonderful resource for XTerra owners.
After just buying my 05 xterra in solar yellow man you have no clue how much your youtube has been a help to me! Keep up the great content man! cheers from canada!
I had a 2005 Xterra SE. Yes the timing chain tensioners wore down on mine at around 57,000 miles. Luckily it was still under the powertrain warranty so Nissan took care of that for free but then at 110,000 miles it did it again and I paid $1100 to have the tensioners replaced again. Also the SMOD, luckily I heard about that before it happened so I got a new radiator and no problems. I now have a 2012 Xterra PRO 4X and love it. Although I had two cats replaced within 6 months of each other and now I need a new rack and pinion. Love your videos and my Xterra!
Change oil and filter every 3000-4000 miles. Mine has 95k miles (07 offroad titan swapped) and the tensioners and guides are still doing good. Never replaced.
I have a 2010 Xterra with Automatic. She has 255,000 miles. The only thing so far I had to replace (my son in law did it for me) was the rear axle. We just got one from a junk yard. My husband thought it was the transmission so we got a transmission with 72,000 miles on it. But it was indeed the rear axle. My husband is not a car dude. I am a car girl and I like to do things myself. He replaced my window in the Xterra and I know he didn’t put all the screws back in so now it rattles. I do need to make repairs on her and I came across a video of you repainting the bumpers and grill. She definitely needs some love since I got her back from my youngest daughter (not a responsible car person of other peoples cars). I love my Xterra and I got her used with 75,000 miles on her and I have had her for 8 years Aug this year. You definitely worried me about the SMOD since I have an automatic but I will definitely be checking on that a lot more since she has so many miles. Thank you for your videos! I know I will be looking at them a lot since I need to repair her.
Thank you sooo much for making this video!!!! The whiny from the secondary timing chain has been annoying me for multiple years and every mechanic I mentioned this to were CLUELESS about the reason for the whining noise!! I’ll just have to fix it myself when I have the funds and time thanks to you!😘😘
Also, Xterra's built in the PNW, WA or OR specifically, were subject of defective products lawsuit. Most of those vehicles however were higher mileage before problematic, resulting in little to no recover. I was offered a $1000 coupon for a brand-new Nissan of choice because my Xterra odometer was approaching 300k miles. Sure, I shopped around, but having upgraded the suspension, exhaust, power steering and replacing the ECM on recall, I decided on the rebuilt version of the same engine from Japan in March 2020. The pandemic was full throttle then. Already, parts were difficult to obtain, but before the first snow in late November, my winter ride was ready. 5k installed resolved any maintenance issues. The plug-in engine included a new radiator and an oil pump. Since then, the camshaft sensors were replaced. Any vehicle driven requires routine maintenance. So, thank you so very much for your instructional vids. Best wishes, Wen
Thanks for excellent tips. if I made add, another notorious issue is engine oil cooler leak. It is simple 1hr work replacing gasket behind oil filter/oil cooler. Watching this Stay@home covid19 n be safe !
Great video. You hit on the two that I was most concerned with. 1. I got the SMOD and had to replace my transmission and radiator. I didn't see it on the radiator cap but transmission fluid was a much lighter almost pink and a little frothy. I found out that it destroyed my transmission because the car would not start and popped all kinds of communication errors like wheel speed. 2. The whiny sound, mine is making it and I had a Nissan mechanic tell me exactly what you said. Oh and he were to fix it I'd be looking at about $2,000 mostly labor. Also thanks for tip about cabin filter I'm definitely going to change mine.
Bought my OR X at 130K miles. At 160K+ now, and meticulously maintained this thing. Also, the owner before me did as well. I checked the maintenance logbook (which I use to write my notes) and found that they changed oil every 5000 miles, brakes on time, brake flushes regularly, and got a number of pars replaced. U Joint several times replaced. Im hoping to get past this timing chain issue for the rest of my time with this thing. Otherwise, so be it. I would like to lift it but currently am replacing tons of suspension that desperately needed saving from the NE rust. Thanks RY!
Thanx! Just bought a 2015 xterra and seeing what things need to be checked. I had the dealer inspect it but I don't hold tons of trust in them seeing as how they missed that the fuel cover door was being held on by magnets (something the seller had already told me about). Seems like it's in overall good shape though, just a few minor things, the fuel door is already fixed, we just needed to reposition the spring a bit. These xterra forums showed us that fix too! :-)
Great Video, I have an 07 Offroad edition with a six speed manual. One note on the fluids is to be sure that if the gear oil is changed in the transmission, you need to use the Nissan product. A dealer once replaced the gear oil with something different and it affected the shifting.
I like your videos. I bought my 05, in 05 here in Phoenix. I have a 05 Frontier LE, crew, 4x4 . I now have 186k, and hope to make it last forever. At 135k, I was looking at things I could do form preventative maintenance. I found out about the radiator issue some had "smod", so I decided to just change it out with a new one, $72 with free delivery on ebay. I did have the oil pressure sensor which just showed as zero, which I ignored for a year because it was $70 and I knew the pressure was fine, but just decided to finally change it. Amazing what they charge for a little sensor that screws into the engine. I also changed all the fluids like you advised and do so every 60k or so, so I think it is something I will be doing again shortly. I have also now decided to change some front end parts, because I have some time, and have not had to do yet, so I have been searching for videos to change control arms, tie rods and wheel bearings, getting tips and tricks. I was curious about the catch can video which I had never came across till checking out more of your videos. Now I am wondering if it is something I should get for my truck. Thanks again for the videos. Just something to consider: If you also put Frontier in your titles, it might hit a lot more people.
Love the vids. Your breakdown on the guides helped me some when I ended up rebuilding my engine. Vote 1 for the chain failing and 6 valves smashing my pistons. Rebuilt the heads. Inspected the pistons. Sourced valves through a machine shop. FYI nissan does not make replacement valves that fit the vq40. If you replace chains and guides use OEM replacement. My guides were laying in the pan. Had scarring on the cams from pieces of tensioner grinding in. I'll never trust a mechanic again after that debacle.
What mileage were you at when the chain failed? Was the guides damaged? Are they made of plastic.? So, could be either chain failure or the guides failed. really interested to know which you think it was,,
@@denisedaniels9841 100k original shop rebuild. 107k chain explosion and total rebuild at home. pretty sure the main tensioner failed. Couldn't really tell with a giant pile of shrapnel. Also found bb's of rtv stuck here and there. They did a horrendous job.
Hey Ry, thanks for all the great videos. My 06 Xterra (6 spd manual) has just passed 420 000 km. It still runs beautifully. Yes, I've replaced the clutch and things like wheel bearings, tie rod ends etc. But the engine is still going strong. I cannot stress the value of simply changing the fluids regularly. I go a maximum of 6 to 7 000 kms between oil changes and the Xterra is repaying me in kindness. Now just to replace the rear tail lifters (again, thanks for the video on that) and the rear shoulder belts that the doberman pups ate.
I love all your videos they’re always helping me in there so informative and it gives me a way to talk to a mechanic that might think that I don’t know anything about my car
The Xterra is a beast from Nissan we had a 2010 one with almost 500,000 miles on it, we give it away and got another 2010 with less than 80,000 miles on for $11000.00 our mechanic said it can give us another 5 years
Nice Video Man, I've had an 05/12 and now a 2017 Frontier all with the Auto, The aux cooler for the trans is more than enough to keep the trans cool so I just Bypassed the Radiator trans cooler entirely when I found out about the SMOD problem. Didn't replace the radiator at all. Just put a Loop of hose between the 2 ports on the rad so keep the coolant in. I caught it within a few days of it happening. Anyway, Truck had 190k on it when I traded it in 2012, Was a good truck. Keep up the cool videos man. I'm about to watch your exterra Lift video. I kind of want to do that to my 17 SL frontier. we will see, I just put new camber bolts in it the other day.
My 07 Xterra is my first car and i got it a year ago. After a month I got the "Chocolate milkshake of death" (oil and trans fluid mix) but I had to get a new trans and a new radiator.
I just buy an 2006 xterra and i have to change 2 of the 4 catallytic cobverter (very expense job close to $1500) But im still love it it has 117549 miles on it and is a very smoth drive Before this one i have a 2001 with 387641 miles and still runing wirh out problems Thanks for your video
Good list of things to expect on an Xterra. From what I have read, the timing chain issue is only a problem from 2005 to 2010 after which Nissan finally changed the timing chain guides to better (metal, not plastic)material. Any Xterra after 2010 will not have an issue with SMOD or the timing chain problems. Glad to see more Xterra content. Did you do a video on the valve cover replacement?
Matt??? i was thinking the same thing, i own an 09/X and was wondering why they only went to 2007? when some of those after seems to have had the same problems, chains and such? [one thing also, my 09 was bought in Dec./2009, so it was one of the last one built for the 2009 year, right?]
Remember, 2005 and newer, Nissan got bought by Renault. Bad decision for owners. Try to get a mecanic to join you for research /buy a Nissan Xterra 1999 to 2003. Those are real tanks
I own a 2005 xterra off road with 143k miles on it. I'm replacing front struts, leaf springs and the rear shocks today. Do you have any advice on removing the back plastic side steps? It will be easier to cut bolts with a torch if they're out of the way. Installing new shackles as well.
Bought my 06 used with only 5000 miles on it. Just past 90,000 I had the transmission fluid re-routed to the smaller radiator(four wheel drive package) to prevent the strawberry milkshake problem.
Ry, you make amazing content for the xterra community! have helped with many issues and educated me on alot of the xterra problems that i wasnt aware of before hand. we would love to see some videos of wheel bearing replacements front and specifically rear. i have an 06 SE and my rear is being difficult. i juat bought an 08 offroad yesterday and i heard they are different than the SE. C200K VS M226. both are auto.
Glad to help! I do have one side that I believe is leaking in the rear. I might just swap out a bearing while I am in there. I am currently shopping for a warehouse to use as my studio and would likely wait on a job like that until I have the space to do it in. Right now I am in a really night 2 car garage. Nice choice on the offroad, I really to pick up a 4WD.
Your videos are very helpful and through. This format is a good idea and the visuals help a lot. My 2006 manual xterra had a broken tensioner and it took us over a week to figure it out, it didn't make that sound but a different one and it wouldn't accelerate.
I have had to replace the cam sensors twice both sides. Doing a rear axle seal now if you doing any heavy towing you have to replace them too. I’m also replacing a bad rear wheel bearing hub while I’m at it on the other side. I did the radiator swap before the 90k miles years ago before it went out. 165k still going strong. 2005 se 2wd
Ive owned an 07 for about 3 years and ive been dogging it daily and never fixed anything on it. I knew about the smod before i bought it and still havent done anything about it. Starting to get paranoid lmao but its a beast. My guides have sounded like that since day 1 also smdh.
Literally did the bypass day one. Replaced the radiator today to add teh cooling back in cause I wanna tow. And low and behold coolant was in the transmission fluid passages I had sealed off 3 years ago
The 05 I'm getting had its rad replaced and my mechanic said there was a tsb calling for a tranny cooler, he's gonna throw and aftermarket one on for me, so I should be fine.
I am doing a rear wheel bearing hub and by the time it’s all said and done just get a new axle it’s actually less heartache that taking it all apart and replacing everything one by one. While pressing everything off a managed to warp the backing plate now I have to buy a new one. Take it from me it’s easier to buy a complete axle shaft than to just try and replace the bearing.
Love your videos, bro!! You’re the truth when it comes to our love for Xterra’s I really enjoy the fact that you’re very thorough and you don’t spit a bunch of bullshit !! bless up to you, brother!! Quick question, do you have to change the chain when you change the timing chain guides ??? I realize these videos are old , but I’m in 115,000 and I got to start doing some work on my baby!! Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!! I turned a lot of my Homies onto your channel all the time!! Jim
First thing I did with my 2010 xterra with 50k miles is order a KOYO radiator and did all new Nissan coolant and transmission flush and fluid.. might as well while its apart..
@@tas-life231 he'll yes.. but make sure it's good.. test the 4wd and look underneath for alot of rust or anything not normal.. and make sure the radiator milk shake didn't happen. Even though 2010 was not likely to have that problem I still replaced the radiator rightaway.. and see if u know anyone who has a scanner to scan the truck. What state r u in ?
@@tas-life231 well see how many miles are on it , xterras keep their value, I went to a nissan dealer to get fluids for my diff fluid change and the sales guys came out and wanted me to trade my xterra in, I told them it has 130k miles and they said so what they keep their value especially the way I kept mine, they offered 10k for a trade but i dont want any other nissan, all the new suv are small and just ugly.. so I past on the offer.
Hey Ry! Great video and content, specifically regarding Nissan Xterras. I had a 2005 and (now, regretfully!) traded in 7 years ago. I absolutely loved it. Now currently in the market for another '05 or '06 to buy cash. Something about the body style on those specific years I really like. New subscriber here ✌🏽😎
Another common issue for people who off-road the X and go “full send” is, weak engine mounts and front diff (R180). They kinda break easily. But that’s for heavy off-road use that includes jumping and pedal to the metal in 4lo.
I have a 2008 Nissan Pathfinder with the 4.0 with 167k. It also has the the infamous timing chain whine. Its not as bad as yours was at start up. When I really accelerate hard it sounds like a supercharger.
2005 pathfinder here for 6 years, also have the whine. Never knew what it was till now. It always scared people crossing infront of me Always thought I was flooring it lol.
My 05 frontier has whined ever since I got it a few years ago, not this bad... I'm not planning on fixing it at this point. Also I have the real oil pressure gauge which is great!! I've never had it in a mechanic shop, I've done some little odds and ends myself... 130k miles...
Thanks for these reassuring and reaffirming resources you have presented us. Helps to know the things I want to tackle are an actual thing and are the actual cause of the issue I am experiencing. I have the low oil light on at idle after warm up with the real gauge, so it's the oil gallery gasket. And I also have the secondary timing chain whine. I hope I didn't do more harm by putting some Lucas oil crap down my variable valve solenoid. It hasn't done that grindy thing as much that sounds like a broken water pump, but I also have an exhaust leak p1283 code. I had the p420 code and did the passenger cat and that cleared. Then got the driver's side bank 2 lean a/f sensor code so I plan to replace the three remaining cats on Wednesday with the cali carb catalytic converters I got from rock auto for like 220 each. Oem are like 700 for each one, and there are 4... hope this fixes my restriction/exhaust leak type issue I am having with hiccuping and rumbling under my feet. Wish me luck.
Hi, have watched your videos many times to maintain my gf's xterra. One constant problem I can't fix. The over flow tank keep losing fluid. We have done the heads, new OEM thermostat. If it sits and runs, the overflow strats losing fluid through little extra drain. Any ideas? thank
Hey. I just found your page. I just bought a 2002 Nissan Xterra and I have so many questions 😩 I’m so lost. 1st time Nissan owner and 2 SUV owner. Love from Chicago. Stay safe out there love
Dual mass flywheel and clutch assembly is pretty weak, early iterations lasting 30-40k. Rumor was they changed friction material around 09’. Many go with aftermarket race clutch for 350z
Ry,i should mention one more thing about the cab filter. After 2010 only PRO 4X models equiped from factory. Models S and X in some cases don’t have them. But the housings are the same,so you just get the ones for PRO 4X ( there are 2 of them),and simply install in a housing. I don’t know why Nissan cheaped out on something like that.
@@volodymyrbuchak1852 I have a 50K mile Armor Grey 014 Xterra “S” trim that I call my “X”. I also have a 180K mile Black Xterra “OFF ROAD” trim that I call my “Black X”.
Thank you for the info did not know facebook has a x members with info ours is a 2007 automatic have only had minor items so far and fluids etc next is when it hits to 100K will be getting timing belt done bought ours 2007 and still rides smooth, thanks again for the info
Another issue I would add, although it doesnt happen to all Xterras, but the issue would be rusted roof problems where the roof rack meets the metal roof, especially located at the bolt connections.
Jay Mac, no sound the battery just started dying out, was driving and noticed the dashboard light went off and on while driving, the wiper was wiping slower than usual, the battery was still good. It also showed the break light on... after it was replaced the break light went off, everything went back to normal... but no sound
@@sunnymango2101 Thank you. I'm trying to track down an odd whining sound. I'm starting to lean more towards power steering pump. I have read elsewhere that the alternator sometimes whines before it goes out.
It’s bad for the environment to change the fluids before it’s necessary no matter who did it I just agree you can pull your dipsticks and check your colors and your smells and see if they’re bad I have a 2000 Xterra is never had the transmission fluid changed still runs like a charm still shifts like a charm so I wouldn’t go by mileage things or anything else go by smells looks and other things like how big of a stain that makes on your driveway
i just bought a 01 Nissan Xterra and who ever had it before me .. did a lift on the truck well they did not do it right at all ..I have been learning periodically on all cars my whole life but this is my first truck that I'm interested in learning about and wanting to do my own work on it .. so ive been watching alot of videos on upgrading and replacing parts on the truck .. But there is one problem i am having that i can not find a video on .. and that is a body lift ... i guess who ever had it before me lifted the body n not the frame n only lifted the back... well when the person i got it from before lifted the front to make it even ... well my truck is all over the place i hit a bump it sways side to..... i drive in the wind n its almost impossible to stay on the road .. The sway bar.... ball joints.... control arms... bushing ....is all brand new .. and I'm still having a problem.... yes ive thought about just taking out the lift.... but i dont know how .. And i don't know if they moved any other parts on truck to do the body lift .. And not only that i love the lift i would really like the swaying to stop .. its a good truck.. i love and i know there is some work to do to it and I'm willing to do it.. Cuz i know it will pay off... Is there any way you or any one could help me figure this out... Please Im not trying to take it to the shop ..Please
Ry, my xterra has the secondary timing chain whine issue. it has almost 120k miles on it. I'm looking to buy a new car this summer, should I be worried about the timing chain issue? can it cause any significant damage or issues beyond the whine?
I was looking at a 2wd Xterra a few years ago with about 140k miles on it. I asked the owner if she had done the timing belt recently and she produced a receipt for a new timing CHAIN installed at 100k, she said the dealer had told her it was coming up on being due so she decided to have it done the next time she went in. The dealer must have felt guilty because the repair did not show up on the Carfax.
Enjoy all your videos they have been a great help with doin different repairs to my Xterra. Have you changed the secondary timing chain guides? Does the whining go away or is it constant? Sounds like the guides are going on mine, however it's not as whiny or goes away after driving it more than 20 minutes. Any thoughts? Thanks and keep the videos coming.
I have a VQ40 Frontier, I imagine all of these relate to it too. I'm going the timing chain guides now actually! Not my only vehicle fortunately so it's taking me WAY longer to do it than it should. I panicked a little when you talked about SMOD as I hadn't heard of that. But Then you said it was on auto transmissions only, so that was a relief. :)
@@maxstruck8450 I was looking at trucks for about six months before I finally found a manual v6 frontier. The only thing is it was a crewcab, and I wanted an extended cab. But now I'm kind of glad I got a crewcab after living with it. :)
Thanks for the video. About to possibly buy an 09' Xterra, manual w/ 127k miles. Would you recommend buying an Xterra in terms of overall reliability? Do you advise against it after having owned one yourself?
I have a 09 automatic 4x4 and love it I have 129000 miles on it offloading is a blast actually hardly use 4lo and only 4hi some with the power It has I use 2wd mostly
There are two camps when it comes to this. Some people think that if it gets to a certain point that the gunk in it is actually the only stuff keeping it working properly. The other people think that's total bullshit. I am on the side of thinking its bullshit. My opinion is that you should always swap out all fluids based on the intervals in your owners manual. But that's just me.
@@Rovari1969 i saw something about that lately, with a 2009/X is or was that a problem I should be concerned about. original owner, and it has now around 100K on it.
So glad to read this. It’s the whole reason the channel was started in the first place. Thanks so much for watching man, glad the videos help.
So thank you for sharing, I feel like mine could have several more road trips left,
she drives beautiful still!
I have a 09 with 129000 hope I get there I plan on owning it for years I drive 64 miles a day and go off roading

nice vid. Accurate and correct being vehicle specific. Not generic basics like most vids out there. All Xterra owners take note: this video is spot on.
Or Pathfinder or Frontier. I have a 12' Pathy and I use Ry's videos exclusively for fixing stuff. And oh god there is so much to fix...

I just got xterra for my wife an she love it. Glad to see you post video on it! Thank you sir.
My pleasure, glad to help!!
Glad to see more XTERRA content! Yea!
2013 when should change shocks
I bought a 2010 Pathfinder and went to change the cabin air filter. Ended up finding a service record stating the truck I had just bought ended up having about 100k more miles on it than what was stated. I’ve had to do a bunch of work on it now that I didn’t think I’d have to do. Thanks to a lot of your videos I’ve been able to much of the work on my own.
Glad to help. Sorry to hear about those surprise miles.
We just purchased a 07 xterra my wife loves it.
I'm glad I came across your videos. Thank you so much.
Thanks for coming by! Be sure to subscribe! I’m still making a lot of Xterra videos.

Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you. 🙏🏻
After just buying my 05 xterra in solar yellow man you have no clue how much your youtube has been a help to me! Keep up the great content man! cheers from canada!
Thanks man! Be sure to sub. More Xterra content coming soon.
I have an 06 in solar yellow, bought it in 07, have 180k miles on it, best vehicle ever!
I’ll just have to fix it myself when I have the funds and time thanks to you!😘😘
My pleasure Tamika! Thanks for watching and I hope that it works out well for you. If you have any questions let me know!
$1000 bucks? Thats it? Kinda crumby. Glad you got it worked out!
Thanks for excellent tips. if I made add, another notorious issue is engine oil cooler leak. It is simple 1hr work replacing gasket behind oil filter/oil cooler. Watching this Stay@home covid19 n be safe !
Thanks!
Ry you the man thank you for all this info You sure you’re making it so easy for xtera owners👏💪🏽😎
I liked how you mixed it up. Top five that's good. How-to that's good.
Sweet, glad you like it. More of both coming soon.
Thanks RY!
Yeah those timing chains can be a pain! Good luck
Glad it helped
Great Video, I have an 07 Offroad edition with a six speed manual. One note on the fluids is to be sure that if the gear oil is changed in the transmission, you need to use the Nissan product. A dealer once replaced the gear oil with something different and it affected the shifting.
Oh wild.

No problem man. Thanks for watching!
So glad to hear! 💪🏻

You can also discuss the problem of hitting the rear bump stops almost every time you go over obstacles or big bumps or if the car is loaded.
Interesting, I’ve never heard of this.
Leaf spring bushings and shackles need replaced. That will help. Had the same issue.

Great videos bro keep em coming

at least disconnect the Trans fluid line from the radiator, and make it a closed loop, but still use the trans cooler.
Literally did the bypass day one. Replaced the radiator today to add teh cooling back in cause I wanna tow. And low and behold coolant was in the transmission fluid passages I had sealed off 3 years ago

aftermarket one on for me, so I should be fine.

excellent, you hit on the essential information.

Grean should be fine if your coolant is green. Just some residue. nothing to worry about. When its pink then stop driving it and figure it out.
Hey Ry! Great video and content, specifically regarding Nissan Xterras.
I had a 2005 and (now, regretfully!) traded in 7 years ago. I absolutely loved it. Now currently in the market for another '05 or '06 to buy cash. Something about the body style on those specific years I really like.

Another common issue for people who off-road the X and go “full send” is, weak engine mounts and front diff (R180). They kinda break easily. But that’s for heavy off-road use that includes jumping and pedal to the metal in 4lo.
Good Video,
Thinking twice about getting an xterra..... 😬
I have a 2008 Nissan Pathfinder with the 4.0 with 167k. It also has the the infamous timing chain whine. Its not as bad as yours was at start up. When I really accelerate hard it sounds like a supercharger.
Hell yea. Makes it sound faster lol.
2005 pathfinder here for 6 years, also have the whine. Never knew what it was till now. It always scared people crossing infront of me Always thought I was flooring it lol.
GuyX2013 Lol that’s funny. Will you have it changed or are you just going to keep driving it? That’s my play anyways.
Any ideas?
thank
I have a 2005 many years ago I did the transmission hose bypass #1 thing to do.
Right on!
Going to check out an 08 today for dirt cheap, thanks for this vid!
Of course! Hope it went well!
Solid resource for Xterra information. Thank you!
👍🏻💪🏻
Always very informative. Thank you.
You got it! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for this!
My 2014 XS had the two cabin filters.
@@lazerrred So,is it X,or S ? Or you have both?
@@volodymyrbuchak1852 I have a 50K mile Armor Grey 014 Xterra “S” trim that I call my “X”. I also have a 180K mile Black Xterra “OFF ROAD” trim that I call my “Black X”.
The primary cats tend to go bad around the 100k mark and can be a bear to replace. OEM replacements are $600 each from rockauto with core.
Thank you for the info did not know facebook has a x members with info ours is a 2007 automatic have only had minor items so far and fluids etc next is when it hits to 100K will be getting timing belt done bought ours 2007 and still rides smooth, thanks again for the info
This was very helpful
Glad it helped. Tell all your friends. Lol
Another issue I would add, although it doesnt happen to all Xterras, but the issue would be rusted roof problems where the roof rack meets the metal roof, especially located at the bolt connections.
Agreed. And the super shitty rivnuts
Great video man!!!
Thank you! 👍🏻
Excellent video.
Stay safe and healthy
Thanks man. You too!
do more xterra vids Please I love mine and am still learning
Will do! As soon as the Titan is finally done. :D
I just replaced my original 06 alternator, that went bad. She has 220kmiles. My original starter was replaced on January 2020, both did my self.
💪🏻👍🏻
Was the alternator making a whining noise before it went?
Jay Mac, no sound the battery just started dying out, was driving and noticed the dashboard light went off and on while driving, the wiper was wiping slower than usual, the battery was still good. It also showed the break light on... after it was replaced the break light went off, everything went back to normal... but no sound
@@sunnymango2101 Thank you. I'm trying to track down an odd whining sound. I'm starting to lean more towards power steering pump. I have read elsewhere that the alternator sometimes whines before it goes out.
Jay Mac, good luck, i hope it doesn’t turn out to be a big ordeal. 🤞🏻
Well. It's late but I'll just say mine had that issue for years and years (yeah I'm ashamed) and we did fix it and nothing else has come of it.
Overall, great information. Thanks
I have a 2009 Xterra I cannot find the fuel filter can you please help
The fuel filter is built into the fuel pump inside of the fuel tank.
Yes sir! Most of these are the same for you. It’s definitely good to have a manual! My X is manual too.
so my x is manual too ))
@@maxstruck8450 I was looking at trucks for about six months before I finally found a manual v6 frontier. The only thing is it was a crewcab, and I wanted an extended cab. But now I'm kind of glad I got a crewcab after living with it. :)
Transfer case fluid is so cheap and makes a huge difference in responsiveness
Thanks for the video. About to possibly buy an 09' Xterra, manual w/ 127k miles. Would you recommend buying an Xterra in terms of overall reliability? Do you advise against it after having owned one yourself?
I have a 09 automatic 4x4 and love it I have 129000 miles on it offloading is a blast actually hardly use 4lo and only 4hi some with the power It has I use 2wd mostly
one question. I have an 07 with 170k and never changed or flushed any transmission fluid to date. Should I now or is it too late?
There are two camps when it comes to this. Some people think that if it gets to a certain point that the gunk in it is actually the only stuff keeping it working properly. The other people think that's total bullshit. I am on the side of thinking its bullshit. My opinion is that you should always swap out all fluids based on the intervals in your owners manual. But that's just me.
@@Rovari1969 have any recommendations on coolers? thx
@@Rovari1969 i saw something about that lately, with a 2009/X is or was that a problem I should be concerned about. original owner, and it has now around 100K on it.
