Nailed it again. I owned a '71 240Z, one of the best little cars I ever owned (tho the AC was a little weak for Southeast Texas). I also own a 2011 Nissan Versa with 63K miles, and the transmission is already burnt and failing. The high-mounted brake light failed at 4 years, and cost $150 for the part. The body is falling apart on the inside. Just not the quality that I expected.
I use to own a 95 Nissan primera, was the best car I ever owned , 3 years ago I bought a 2010 Nissan Micra n-tec to teach my kids to drive in .... I do all my own servicing , and change my oil every 4 k miles , so far it hasn’t missed a beat ...... I liked the Nissan engines due to they have a timing chain instead of a belt ... so far everything is ok , will keep you posted as to and when it picks up faults, cheers scotty for another informative video..... Well Scott hate to disappoint you but I have a 2017 Nissan Altima Sr bought new twenty thousand miles on it still working good so maybe it's just the people that's not taken care of their car but I do hate the cvt transmission and I also have an extended warranty on it just in case so we'll see
This is such a shame. When I was in high school, I bought a 1985 Nissan manual 2wd pickup. I bought it for $1,000, changed the oil regularly and replaced the starter once. I drove it for 7 years then sold it for $1,000. That machine made a huge difference in a young person's life.
I owned a '97 maxima in 2000. Awesome car. Drove like a dream, never had an issue. Sold it to buy a Dodge ram... Yeah, stupid mistake. Bought a '96 maxima in about 2010. Awesome car, never had any serious issues. Took it to 245k and then gave it to a neighbor. They drove it till 300k before dumping it because of accidents. Sad. They were a great car company.
What is shameful...in the point that, you bought a car for 1000 dollars. Changed oil, Changed starter and sold for 1000 dollars. It made a huge difference in your life. 😕😕😕

Very true. I have a Nissan Sentra 3 years old and 68000 miles. The transmission broke just barely out of warranty. Nissan is not paying for it. It’s cost me $4500 to put in a new transmission. I swear won’t ever purchase Nissan ever. I advised to anyone I know and my family members. Never buy Nissan and infinity cars.
I have a,infiniti , it has bad wiring , had to install better engine grounds , the widow wires short out or bad ground idk , the horn and Crouse control shorted out as well . This is thier top dollor car ?
I have a 2016 pathfinder. Runs like a champ so far. Had a 96 maxima for 15 years. 0 issues. I have 100k mile warranty on the pathfinder. I will say this. Regular services are key. They dont make em like they used to thats for sure. But damn i love my pathfinder.
looking for a nissan frontier...how do i pick a good used one? prefer 2011-2015..would like 4x4 and automatic trans......do you have any recommendations...should i go with 4 or 6 cylinder. 2 or 4wd? also is 180k miles to many miles to buy a used one? thanks
As an Altima owner, I completely agree. Renault has ruined Nissan (at the very least transmission wise) the 2.5 in my Altima seems to be pretty underpowered but bulletproof. The transmission is just way too weak in my experience even with religiously followed transmission services, I have videos on my channel about the transmission failing at only 72k miles.
The manuals are good. Their CVT and A/T are garbage though. Another issue is they have a tendency to blow head gaskets as they age so don't let it run low on coolant or overheat.

That would be a used Honda/Toyota/Acura/Lexus haha. Even if you buy a 10yo one, as long the previous owner took good care of it you're set. You'll even get more reliability out of an old 5-speed auto/manual Honda than a new CVT one.
That VQ was an awesome engine. I still have my 2002 with 130k. No major problems. Unfortunately, Nissan is phasing it out in favor of turbo 4s, like most other manufacturers
My family has owned several models that are widely considered “worst ever“. With all but one we had no trouble at all. What makes a car “worst“ is there are more lemons compared to other cars, often the result of poor design.but Even so most people who own them have a few or no problems. It’s just a matter of the odds. The worst car I ever owned was a Honda.
I currently own the notorious 2016 Nissan Altima.. I also worked for Nissan and after I heard all the cvt problems and recalls they had I thought for sure I had made a horrible mistake.. 4 years later still have not had a single problem with this car.. it even demolished a deer and just kept on truckin... ALL new cars are just not built to last like they used to be..
I have a 2009 Nissan Altima and I LOVE IT!!! I love Scotty too and that's why I do an abundance of the maintenance tips that Scotty recommends. I don't like that Scotty Scares me in virtually every single time Scotty talks about the Altima, it really bothers me because he constantly bad mouths my Altima, but I still listen to Scotty, I'd be stupid not to. Over 300 videos I've watched in 3 years. I now have 105K miles, NEVER a problem, because I'm very pro-active about the maintenance. Regular this often that, etc. I do the maintenance and I've had not had an issue. I purchased the car with exactly 78K in 2018. 3/17/22. New struts, joints bearings, studs, tires, battery, spark plugs, etc. you know normal stuff.
CVT transmissions aren't bad as such, they just need to be rebuilt every 120000-150000kms! Though most manufacturers don't intent on their cars lasting more then 5-10 years now!
I’ve had an ‘84 Sentra, ‘84 Maxima, ‘85 Maxima, ‘90 Stanza, ‘94 Infiniti Q45t, ‘97 Infiniti Q45t, 2001 Infiniti Q45t and now a 2017 Infiniti Q50 3.0t. Although I’ve never had a one with a CVT, all of my Nissans and Infiniti’s have been great cars that I’ve driven 125-175 thousand miles with very little issues. That’s why I keep buying them.
Russell, I too had a 85 nissan 300zx, 97 nissan sentra, 99 altima, and bought a 2018 manual transmission sentra as a commuting car. I have always been leery of the "one speed" CVT transmission hence why I got the manual transmission sentra. Every single one of the nissans I have ever owned have been manual transmissions and all were good cars.
Thats great , but as a guy who has owned high milage cars and self repaired them ,i know that car had had plenty of things replaced on it . Which is normal , its when engines and transmissions go bad and more than once , and early its junk .
Im the same way with my 98 maxima :D got 367k miles rn but i made it all beautiful so now its my long long distance road trip car. Never gave me a problem other than a battery cable going bad from corrosion!

Because he's wrong. Renault never told Nissan to use CVTs, that was not a byproduct of Renault taking part-ownership of the company. Nissan stayed independent, and Renault has smartly never used the CVT except for in the Koleos. You Americans wouldn't know about that SUV.
Ultimately they want people to lease electric cars, they pay 500 bucks per month for a washing machine on wheels and after 5 years the manufacturer takes it back, scraps it and the consumer gets a new model and the payments continue. The motor industry wants to adopt the Apple business model.
Apple business model also means change the charging cable types every 2-3 years so there is absolutely no backward compatibility and shuts out third-party accessory vendors.
Pedro Sueta it’s been 5 years since Apple changed the charge to lightning. They recently changed to usb type c because that is a very powerful port especially for the MacBooks the fact about type C is that it can charge your computer power a display give you a mouse and keyboard and a lot more. It’s pushing for innovation. You want to see charging cables changing a lot? Look at Dell they have like 10 different chargers for their computers
@@Heitz2496 By adopting USB type C on their line-up, Apple effectively created another headache for anyone who has to deal with up to 3 generations of their products on a daily basis. I have pile of dongles for the older generations and have to acquire another batch of USB type C dongles for newer ones. And what's up with leaving ONLY ONE USB C port on a MacBook? Sure, it saves space but you end up carrying other accessories just to interface "legacy" devices. By the way, Dell has been consistent with their power cords, it is HP that has different power plug and wattage requirement for their desktop and laptops.

I own a 2015 370z Nismo and it’s an amazing car. I can agree nissan’s quality went down, but the Z and GTR line are amazing and the VQ engine lasts a lifetime if maintained well.
VQs, VRs and the old VGs are all amazing motors that pack a lot of power and still be pretty reliable. I personally love the VQ56 in the Nissan/Infiniti SUVs because they are bullet proof and sound more like an AMG V8 but are easier to work on like an LS series motor.

Very harsh. For the last 20 years, Renault has, on average, produced more reliable cars than all the VAG manufacturers, except maybe Skoda. Here in Ireland, VW or anything German is considered to be reliable, even though all available data shows they produce less than averagely reliable cars, while Renaults are perceived to be a disaster, despite the data showing they are slightly above average in terms of reliability, and reasonably cheap to maintain (here in Europe, with their huge dealer network, and fairly cheap and readily available parts). These reputations were earned back in the 70s, and those perceptions have persisted. After saying all that, what do I drive? A Mazda 6 of course ;)
It's not Renault fault, it's Nissan fault. Renault just selling diesel engines to Nissan, and they work compared to japanese ones, petrol and diesel. I have had Primera P12 with japanese engine.. 58 000 miles, and engine was absolutely dead, burn oil like hell, high petrol consumption, and just sold it out, and switched to old BMW E46 1998 Petrol. Which runs all the time, and not seen any problems like the Nissan's one. I have and 2 french cars, Citroen and Renault, and they're much reliable than Nissan.
Andrew Sowerby hilarious. So you’re just looking at statistics on nearly new cars. I’m looking at cars of all ages and work on them every day. Vw may have many reliability issues with certain weak points/common faults etc and could cause lower scores on whatever surveys you use. But over a longer period of time and high mileages, Vws are superior in build quality and materials to Renault. They are considered reliable, because they are. It’s why you see so many old Vws around on the roads still.
Renault is the only useful french car brand, their cars are reliable, they have a good price for what you get and the 2019 generations look sick. The new Megane, the Koleos, the Talisman Grandtour - all nice cars for an easy price.
@MadProductionsink - not entirely true. It is MUCH more complicated. Part of the problem is that a highly competitive market puts so much cost pressure on the car companies that they can only go with the cheapest manufacturer and materials (this is partly due to customers who buy based on price and styling, rather than reliability and partly stockholder short-sightedness among lots of other reasons). This has resulted in an industry-wide stampede towards Chinese parts. The Chinese car parts market is flooded with fly-by-night trading companies all willing to find fly-by-night manufacturers willing to rip off designs, substitute materials, and cut quality corners to do business. They cherry-pick the parts that are first sent to their customers for design and production validation, then ship the marginal crap in quantities. If you are unlucky enough to receive fewer parts that meet your quality criteria than you need for your build schedule, you won't get replacement parts until the next boat, and good luck with the quality of those. If we TRULY want reliable cars, we have to, EN MASSE, stop buying the crappy brands until they offer really good warranties without squirrelling out of claims, and they then start paying more attention to reliability. This will probably result in higher costs, but we want that over being stranded by the side of the road.
Yep Scotty hit the nail on the head. Nissans USED TO BE good cars back in the 90's and earlier. Once Renault got ahold of the company, reliability and overall quality have plummeted. I won't touch another Nissan until they stop injecting them with inferior Renault quality.
Same here, my uncle actually had the late 90s Sentra, the funny looking one Scotty showed with the picture, are used to have a 2000 Maxima, but ever since they merged it with eurotrash And started using cvt only , I never looked back, went straight over to Lexus

legioner9 Making a engine reliable doesn't make the car reliable, GM makes great engines and has the worst transmissions out there, or every thing else failing on the car , And again formula one is a whole different animal from an every day car, those cars are modified damn near before every race, especially to compensate for the track they are racing on

Mazda in general makes decent cars now. But they were partnered with Ford for many years and those models were crap. Notice you dont see much if any old mazdas on the road? I want to buy buy a mazda but their past record makes me stay away.
get a standart transmission. however we had mazda 2,3,5 and all the automatics survived easily 150k miles in israeli hot weather without any service (transmission is not serviced at all here. i guess the dealers want it to die quicker and are too lazy. they claim it is lifetime oil and filter). and the engines about 200k miles while oil is changed every 9k miles. with the hot israeli weather and city stop and go traffic it is pretty decent. toyotas and hondas are pretty similar however their transmissions last a bit longer because oil is changed every 40k miles.
There was a pretty cheerleader that went to school with me that lived in the same neighborhood who drove a white one.I had a former boss that drove a 300zx in the 80's he owned the restaurant too.
Nissan cars will last as long as other cars if you do maintenance. I bought a 2007 Altima 2.5S with 213000 kms and still going strong. No CVT issues, because maintenance is done.

I am one Nissan owner who completely disagrees with this. I actually prefer the way a CVT drives over a standard transmission. You don't get shift shock when the car shifts at high speed. As a matter of fact you never FEEL the car shift it is very smooth and faster off the line than a gear based transmission. Plus they are very good on gas. This is my second Maxima and my first one did 350,000 miles.
Not faster off the line against a car with a Dsg transmission. CVT is boring and drab I had a Nissan CVT in the late 80's new Altima worst transmission ever. CVT has improved but it is still lackluster.
@@drewski1441 I would agree. But how much do cars with DSG transmissions cost. Nissan GT-R, Porsche, Ferrari, etc. compared to the price of a Maxima? This is NOT a sports car it is a fast commuter car designed to have good gas mileage but also be fun to drive and reasonable prices. It is all of those things.
@Mike Klein Many people only believe what they hear on TH-cam and won't believe what they experience for themselves. I haven't had my Maxima long enough to see if it is reliable. I have a 2016 and so far 0 problems. Toyota just didn't have the curb appeal of the Maxima.
Post merger, Altimas, Sentras and Versas are all god awful crap. My friend has a 2016 Sentra and at 45,000 miles, the transmission is starting to have problems. He did the transmission fluid changes frequently. I had a 2015 Versa that I got rid of at 92,000 that was having major issues. Yes I drove it a lot, but it shouldn't have had any transmission issues and I even changed the fluid ahead of schedule. Lucky to get any money out of that junk. Garbage vehicles. And the CVT drives like crud. I have a Mazda 3 2018 now and it is way better than any Altima, Sentra or Versa I have driven. I have driven all three. I am unfamiliar with the Maxima. The other three models are crap though.
Mercedes 722.3 is worth a mention, at least in reliability, although its 4-speed. It has 2 oil pumps even, second one works even when towing so no need to remove drive shaft.
Drive Car the general motors 4t80e used in cadillacs. Never had issues because the fluid didnt have to get change unlike their attached Northstar engine that was neglected, and thus failed. The 4t80e was used on many platforms, and was rarely the cause of failure
I had an Infinity for 10 years and then jumped into a 2014 Altima and never had a problem with the engine. I put 100,000 on the Infiniti and 50,000 on the Altima, all I do is drive. In my experience, they hold up pretty well.
If the engine and transmission don't last atleast 250,000 miles the car is junk. You shouldn't have to buy a new car or shell out thousands to rebuild an engine or transmission every 5 years or 150,000 miles. That defeats the purpose of buying a vehicle new.
I am at the 107K mark in my Nissan Maxima and having some issues... especially with the gear shift -_- Lets not talk about their dim lights, which I need to replace the whole headlight assembly.
The CVT killed Nissan's cars. My Ex's Altima had trans problems from 40,000 miles. After about a dozen trips to the dealer, a call to Nissan Corporate, and a ton of BS, we finally got the CVT replaced under warranty, all for it to fail again.
I have an Infiniti G37.. made by Nissan.. they have excellent reliability and it has had pretty much no issues all I do is change oil and do basic maintenance myself
My mom has a Nissan Murano with just under 29,000 miles. Nissan just replaced the CVT in it under warranty after it's 3rd trip back to the dealer. Once you put the gear selector in drive it would take 7-8 seconds to actually go INTO drive. I used to be a huge Nissan fan. My first vehicle was a 1997 Nissan Hardbody pickup. I sold it about 10 years ago, it had 140,000 miles and the guy I sold it to is still driving it to this day.
TennesseeMatt all these weird transmissions these companies are using are junk. CVTs are junk. Fords Powershift Dual Clutch automatic transmissions are junk. I have a Ford Fiesta. But they put them in the Focus too and maybe the Fusions if I’m not mistaken. The ONLY good thing about the crappy Ford transmissions are normally just the clutch goes out. (It’s two manual transmissions acting as one attempting to simulate an automatic transmission.) The clutches aren’t ridiculously expensive (couple hundred bucks.) However over time replacing lots of clutches could add up. Luckily, mines still under warranty. There’s a class action lawsuit going on right now against Ford in regards to it.
I had considered buying a Kia Soul turbo a few months back. But once I found out they were ONLY offered with a DCT I quickly scratched that one off the list.
@@jerminator0688 toyota's eCVT in their hybrids are unbreakable as they don't have belts to slip. And non hybrid CVTs have discreet launch gear acting like normal automatics under heavy loads.
Jerm Inator The Fusion got lucky and they used a normal 6 speed, but it still had problems. The Fusion Sport used a ASIAN transmission and was a good unit. The Powershit is worthless. My ex drives a Fuckus with that turd of a transaxle and he’s had to replace the clutch pack twice since he got it a year ago, and it only has 80k. It’s a joke!
I had a Nissan Juke for 3 years. It was brand new when I bought it. Every year I had to get a new battery because it would leave me stranded yearly. The last straw was when it left me stranded three times in one week and I had run out of roadside assistance. I had it towed to the Nissan dealer which was about $125. They did not offer to reimburse me for that tow. As soon as they replaced the battery, for the third time during the ownership of the vehicle, I drove it across the street to Toyota and traded it in for a Highlander. Never again Nissan! 😝
I love Nissan, never had any issues and I’be had 3. ‘13 Sentra, ‘15 Altima, ‘18 Rogue. My grandma’s 1996 Maxima would still be running I guarantee it if she hadn’t bought a new car back in 2013. That car was fun to drive!
We own an Xtrail with the CVT and a decade later, never had problems other than a new battery. I dont think Nissans make bad engines but are very sensitive and prone to failure if you dont maintain them properly.
Its not a truck. Its a compact SUV and in terms of strength and reliability, a normal Auto and Manual are stronger for sure which is ideal if modifications and upgrades are your thing but its just a family barge for us at this point. In terms of off road, we drive it for holidays to places on the East coast of Australia. We take it on the occasional off road track to get to a lookout or camping spot. Im not sure how you would classify Medium grade tracks but it get get through some smallish ruts just fine and we've even taken it on the beach a couple times. There are plenty modified XTrails on the road and the internet and they all love the fuel economy of a small car with the space and capability of a wagon. 10/10 would recommend if you need something to take your family on road trips.
I purchased a 2009 Altima used back in 2010. I currently am still driving it with over 360km. My engine is running fine. Never had an issue more than regular maintenance
@@kevintieu693 I believe the company's name is Jatco. I worked at one of the main nissan factories. JATCO was literally next door to the Nissan factory and I know for a fact that they build nissans transmission.
I totally agree with you! I've own several Nissans over the years but when I added my 2011 Nissan Maxima SV it's been an headache! Just has 90,000 miles on it and my trans has been replaced twice at the dealership, I would never buy another Nissan. I would love to file a class action lawsuit against Nissan because everyone I know that owns the Altima or Maxima has had Transmission problems and replaced by the dealer.
Don't even get me started on my 11 Maxima sv got it 7 months ago cost me over $2000 in repairs and now I think my transmission is about to go....think I'm ready to file a lawsuit too
@@KyLesCaster my 2014 Versa manual says replace the CVT fluid at 60k miles. I mentioned it to the dealership and they said they would test the fluid and I might not need it replaced for another 10k miles. I said nope, at 60k miles, you're replacing that fluid regardless what that test says.
Nissan will finance anyone now. You see people who can't afford to fix the car when they get in an accident so you see Altimas with no bumpers everywhere.
There are so many Altimas in my general area, I was thinking, they are giving them away free or something... Also the rental companies are fully stocked with Altimas, like it's the perfect rental car, but I'm just guessing they bought them up cheap.
Ghetto people pocket insurance money instead of fixing their cars. I was in a wreck when I was about 4 with my whole family. The old Grand Marquis no longer had reverse (gear or the lights!) or tail light lenses. So my dad won in court and spent the money on something else. Then he taped up the lights and drove it without reverse. WHY THO

After multiple trips to the dealer and about 7 months into ownership, my 43k mile Sentra had its CVT replaced under warranty. Hell, a customer just walked into the shop with a Nissan and the CVT is acting up. Biggest piece of crap ever made.
@@jamieburton8219 2007 Murano SL AWD, purchased new. By 2009 rusted everywhere, tried to add a tow hitch and metal frame would peel off like a cracked eggshell. Eventually got it on, but was not easy. A lot of the standard bolts were so rusted that when I needed to remove them, they just snapped off from the welded threaded nut part. I've never seen a welded piece just snap off before that day.
I’ve owned 3 Nissans, a 1978 510 hatchback 5 speed with a 2.0 liter I4, a 1986 Sentra 5 speed with a 1.6 liter I4 and a 2013 Pathfinder 3.5 liter V6 with a CVT. All performed well with no significant issues. I had transmission shuttering issues on the CVT but it was fixed with a PCM re-program. Nissan was very responsive with the recall on the CVT and extended the warranty to 8 years. Nissan even recalled the pathfinder a second time to see if there was excessive wear on the CVT metal drive belt and they found no excessive wear. James Nasto idk bro, my mom has a 2013 (2014?) pathfinder and baby's it. Interior panels started falling off the A pillars in 2 months. Replaced rear bearings twice. And had dadshboard electrical issue, I can't recall what. Frankly I feel they are crap.
I'm on my 2nd Nissan. 2008 Altima was the best car I ever had. So last year I purchased new Murano. It had a quite few assembly errors. I took care of them myself, except for one. Unfortunately, this particular problem is out of warranty after one year only, so I have open complaint case with Nissan. I hope they will take care of the problem. But if not, I will do, and my Murano will be the last Nissan ever for me and my family...
*Nissan LEAF's are a good exception to this rule.* There is no CVT transmissio to break, no muffler to leak and fall off, no fuel system or emmissions parts. The battery is rock solid reliable and so is the motor which is connected to the road without a transmission. It's so simple it couldn't break if it wanted too. You only really need to buy super-cheap electricity, new tires every once in a while, windshield wiper fluid, wipers, and the occasional light bulb. I've been driving LEAFs for six years now and I couldn't be happier with them. They are very quick, handle pretty good, and are a lot of fun to drive around town with all that electric torque and very low center of mass. (You should see these things on roundabouts - I can go 3x the speed of any suburban safely while turning in those) I picked up my current one after a three year lease for $9600. It's the best car I've ever owned, even better than my '96 Trans-Am which was a lot of fun but equally painful at the repair shop and financing. The LEAF is just plain fun, a bit bug-eyed, but fun. It's sort of Nissan's red-headed stepchild, included but not honored in its product line up, which is sad because it's their best product.

I had a 2008 Nissan Titan with 265,000 miles no issues EVER, sold it and I still see it around running strong, got me a Toyota Tundra, that was my biggest mistake had trade it for a new Titan again, never going to buy another brand other than Nissan
I have to disagree with you on several points. I had a 2008 Nissan Rogue SL AWD. It had over 300,000 miles on it when I traded it for a 2017 Rogue Sport SL. The 08 NEVER had any CVT issues. I think that the key was either the fact that I kept the trans fluid changed, or, the fact that this model was actually built in Japan, not the US. In either case, the CVT can last. It is just maintenance that makes it last, as with any other Auto type trans. 2. I have a 2003 Nissan Frontier that I have been driving for 17 years now. Great little truck with the 2.4L four cyl, and a manual 5 speed. While it only has 113,000 miles on it, it is very reliable, and gets 26mpg. It is probably good for at least another 200,000 miles. Again, key to reliability for any car or truck is maintenance. People seem to skip that part, and then blame the manufacturer for the issues that they have. I will stick with my Nissan's. I agree. My Altima and my Rogue have not given me any problems. I've driven mid 70s and 80s model Fords and Chevys that were a pain to keep repaired and driveable. With regular maintenance my rice-burners have been a dream in comparison.
I am and always will be a Nissan fan. I have 3 of them. A ‘94 Sentra with over 400,000 miles, a 350Z that was single turbo on a stock block for 10 years and is now twin turbo on a built motor and a 2003 Infiniti M45. All of them have been amazingly reliable and fun to drive.
First car at 17 was 93 b13 sentra se-r ... crashed it bought another 91 blew motor after few months used parts to fix crashed one then totalled it weekend I got back LOL...Damn sr20 motors...then got a 200sx se-r then traded for another 93 se-r put a sr20de-t avenir swap in it ..just sold it 2 years ago so from 17-32 loved nissan..still have a 06 g35 sedan 6m/t fun car ...trying to find se-r around somewhere so nissan b in my blood 4ever..hard to find classic 90's nissan se-r anymore in good shape
I've owned a Renault Megane R.S 265 Trophy for the past 4 years and the only thing gone wrong is a broken engine mount rubber which cost me ~$250 to replace including labor.
If only the guy knew what he was talking about. He offers opinions, not the truth. He is right on some important things, but he is wrong on MANY things. I watch him because he is crazy and just rambles on. But nobody should take his auto "advice" seriously.
Ted I’ve pointed out numerous things he’s been wrong about. He may have been in the business for a while, but so have I. Nissan didn’t change their name from Datson to Nissan. Nissan was always Nissan in Japan. When they started selling cars in the U.S market they sold them under the name Datson so if the flopped it wouldn’t look bad on Nissan in Japan. It’s sad that someone that has such a cult following of people trying to gain car knowledge is intentionally being misleading in a lot of his videos.
I have a 2009 Nissan Altima and I LOVE IT!!! I love Scotty too and that's why I do an abundance of the maintenance tips that Scotty recommends. I don't like that Scotty Scares me in virtually every single time Scotty talks about the Altima, it really bothers me because he constantly bad mouths my Altima, but I still listen to Scotty, I'd be stupid not to. Over 300 videos I've watched in 3 years. I now have 105K miles, NEVER a problem, because I'm very pro-active about the maintenance. Regular this often that, etc. I do the maintenance and I've had not had an issue. I purchased the car with exactly 78K in 2018. 3/17/22. New struts, joints bearings, studs, tires, battery, spark plugs, etc. you know normal stuff.
So TRUE...I had a 1984 Datsun/Nissan Sentra (had both badges) that I drove for over 24 years and hardly anything ever went wrong! So reliable, and replacement parts were so cheap!
I used to have a '71, 510 station wagon with a 1600cc engine and it had over 230k miles when I sold it to some friends in the late '90s and rust finally took it's toll around the bottoms of the engine compartment and they had to scrap it.
Those engines scare me we have 40 of them where I work with the 3.5L and at around 96k thing's start breaking.. I don't know much about the 2.7L but it seems to me these engines have a lot more stress on them to produce the power as opposed to a V8.. But I'm not Engineer so..
My girlfriend has a 2010 Nissan Altima. 380000 km still going strong, zero issues with CVT. Never even changed the transmission fluid. 2016 and up they added a factory cooler to the transmission.
Have a 2008 Altima 288.000 miles no problems with the transmission ever! No electronics went out just regular maintenance everyone has a Nissan now days
@@imlamar2011 It seems like CVTs are a hit or miss proposition. I've heard horror stories about Nissan CVTs going out with 60k and also stories like yours about good longevity, including my brother's. My Subaru has a Jatco CVT in it, so I'm at 100k with my fingers crossed.
Nissan is good until around early 2004. The deal happened in 1999 but it took them a few years to get structured. Nissan CVT's are total garbage. They are getting better, but still not good as Honda and Toyota. Nissan is giving 7 year 100k mile warranty cause they basically have to sell one. Their cars don't hold as much value as Honda or Toyota ether. If you get a new Nissan, find one in a manual.
I have a 2010 370z and i love it. This is my second 370z and i never had any problems with either of them, and i bought them both used with 6 speed manuals.
I remember my families 4 door Navy Blue Datsun. It was a great vehicle...with multiple costly repairs😒😒 and was laid to rest 10 years into owning the vehicle.
My parents had a Datsun Bluebird that they sold to our neighbor and I STILL see it today. It looks beatup as hell, but it STILL RUNS. Lol Nissan in my country had the B13s that was ubiquitous. You could get parts easily and it was the “everymans” car. Now the Frontier has become the Nissan car choice.
Datsun made the European cars have more of what is now the standard equipment in. But the cars were only made to last 2 years. They would rust to nothing after that. The cars were cheaper, more fuel efficient, and more reliable than the other cars available, but not made to last. The engines are still very good.
No one is selling or trying to convince anyone of anything. They are still free to spend their money on whatever car they want. Those that watch this channel are probably more educated than the average consumer so they will be better prepared on making an informed decision.
Great timing... Daughter bought a versa note new in 2014 against my reccomendations... Now today its in the garage and it looks like the cvt is dying. Speedometer drops and the dreaded cvt noise... And to make it better the wheel bearings are totally shot as in rotor rubbing the spindle... And at 61000 miles. Just past the trans warranty. I used to be an ase master and dreaded cars like this. I miss the days of the good Nissan's like the ones mentioned and the B trucks were pretty durable as well. Great timing on the video and I got a good laugh out of it then remembered I'm the one that has to work on her car....
Robert Adams Funny as you say that a couple years back my girlfriend at the time got a 2014 Nissan versa at like 40K miles. I told her those cars are junk and I don't recommend. She got it anyways cause her parents said it's a good car. She didn't do any maintenance on the car, never checked fluids or anything unless I did. And anything I said she needed to do she never listened and her dad said that I'm wrong basically. I dumped her 3 months ago. And last week I see on her Facebook bout her car being broke down and that her transmission went out at 64K and that Nissan doesn't wanna touch it because she voided the warranty by never changing the fuckin oil since she got it and is acting like it ain't her fault. I definitely made a comment on her post I couldn't resist it

I had an Infiniti G35 coupe and G37 coupe. The first thing I noticed was the paint quality wasn't that good and I started getting rust spots in the strangest places, like on the roof. In my G37 coupe, the dashboard started to melt...and I mean really bad. Nissan would not replace it. I traded that sucker in on a German made Mercedes roadster. I've been happy ever since. I'm done with Nissan.

Yup ur right Scottie...I had 1982 Datsun 200sx ran forever....I drove it to the scrap yard with 750,000km, engine was still in great condition body was falling apart because I never rust poof the vehicle. ...
Just get a Nissan Truck. Keep the fluids changed. If you have a 2005-2010 Frontier, replace the radiator or bypass the trans cooler--the radiators were bad and would leak coolant into the trans cooler. Keeping your coolant changed would prevent this, but a 2011 radiator was the best solution. My 2010 has 325,000+ miles and is still going strong. My 2002 SC is being retired at 460,000 and runs well, but has a leaking rear engine seal and a couple of other issues, according to my son.
Nissan settled a class action lawsuit because of this issue. The xterra, pathfinder and Frontier were all part of it. Yes the trans cooler would leak. It was in the radiator. You would get a pink milkshake in the radiator when coolant and trans fluid leaked. We live in Illinois. Our 2007 Pathfinder had this happen in WV while on vacation. FOrtunately, the bill was paid by Nissan because of the lawsuit which extended the drivetrain warranty. As Matt said, put the trans cooler outside the radiator to avoid this issue altogether. Avoid a ruined vacation or worse.
@@tomdickharryjane yes but I'm pretty sure the extended warranty has expired for almost all the affected models. Plus I think it was limited to a hundred thousand miles. So if you have one of these you better put a bypass or new radiator for sure. New transmission and radiators going to run you about 5,000. At this point that would be just a salvage value vehicle. The extended warranty would probably only cover half the cost at Best. and probably a 2010 model would be the only one still covered.
@@HiPlains1 Yes the extended warranty was good for 8 years 80,000 miles. Ours went bad at about 7 years 72,000 miles (whew). It covered the full cost, thankfully. At this point yes all affected will be out of warranty. And yes, bypass the transmission cooler and put an external one on at this point. One other issue is the timing chain. Apparently another Achilles heel on these models.
@@tomdickharryjane plus the fuel sending sensor would go out like clockwork. that probably require a new fuel pump as well. I actually had Nissan Goodwill my entire amount as the warranty didn't cover the whole amount but it happened with only 50,000 miles so I guess they felt bad and paid for the whole job. I just bought a brand new frontier 2019. It's considered the most reliable midsize at this point. But man It took Nissan way too long to fix that transmission ordeal.

The 80's and 90's Nissan trucks were super dependable. I own an 94 pathfinder with 600,000km on it, original motor, second trans. And a 2002 Xterra Supercharged. I feel like 2004 was the end of the Nissan glory days.
You are so right - my wife had 2011 rogue and under carriage was rusting out and one of rear stabilizer bar rusted thru . Removed it and traded in for another 2018 rogue - sorry bad choice again . The suv doesn’t have 16 k miles and already had an air bag sensor replaced . Unreal!! You hit right on the nail - won’t buy a Nissan product ever again .
It also depends on which state you purchased the vehicle, who assembled the vehicle and how often its maintained...If you maintain your car..like you main your body..then you have no problem..otherwise yikes...problems all around.
@Terri, both SUVs are dealer kept . Scotty is right on point - specially with the latest 2018 rogue we are very diligent in keeping up with all service intervals - 16k and a failed air bag sensor was found . Not good !! Now take a look at the Undercarriage of your mom’s 2015 suv - you might find rust at the rear suspension. We never missed a service interval with my wife’s old 11 rogue my family used it as a daily driver so it has to be a reliable car . I will be looking at either Toyota or Hyundai for our next vehicles. Not a pleased customer.
@@thething72 I will agree with you that the 2019-2020 Nissan Rogue's are not the best! The best Nissan Rogues in my opinion and experience as a daily driver are the 2013 Nissan Rogues. It drives better, handles curves better, easy viewing everywhere. I just can get with the new Rogues.
I drive a 2012 Nissan Versa. A few things have gone out on it that are a pain to replace, namely the upstream oxygen sensor and the blower motor for the AC, but that’s about it. A little over 110k miles on it.
If Nissan CVTs are trash, explain the Honda CRV, Civic, Accord, etc. Honda’s known for reliability, are they still considered it? Especially since they’ve been adding turbos which is also known to reduce reliability.
@@a.randolph8112 If not into look and racing go for camry with lifetime warranty. Best of all worlds. Better engine, 10 speed auto, reliability, and lifetime powertrain warranty.
I bought a Honda Logo off my neighbour at 20,000Kms with a badly juddering CVT, drove it like that for a while then worked out that some numpty had put Dexron III in instead of the proper special (and pricey) Honda CVT fluid, I changed the fluid, juddering went away and now it's at 145,000 and has run flawlessly.
I worked for Nissan back in the late 80's and early 90's. They had a paradigm shift from making those sporty cars and having multiple racing divisions here in USA. Some idiots moved away from that claiming the public wanted family cars instead. When they cut the R&D for stodgy looking sedans and desire for profit, they took a slide toward making junkier cars. Just look at what followed over time. I don't know for sure that they were already sliding prior to that, but if you remember they dominated the IMSA GTP class for three years in a row during that time. They had some real talent on their payrolls here in USA. They had some awesome racing facilities here in USA, and winning championships sold cars through television advertising. When the recession hit, they cut back, and and they changed to poor leadership. Tom Miganelli was out at Nissan in Gardena, and replaced by a twit - they dumbed down Nissan and eventually moved out of Gardena. Same kind of stupidity at Infiniti. That may not be the only reason, but it sure seemed dumb to me at the time. Not to mention the jobs lost to people who had incredible talent, gone from the corporation for good. Many of us were proud to work for Nissan. As much as I loved it, when their cars started turning to crap, I never bought one. I bought Isuzu's and Toyota's instead, and had great success with them. Remember the Toyota Loving Care? They fixed broken stuff for me even when the car was out of warranty (when they knew and cheerfully admitted they had a problem area). That was the time when the Japs saw it as an embarrassment for the car to breakdown.
I feel blessed, or super lucky, one of the two. I'm on my 3rd Nissan, first one was a 1996 200SX SER, decent car, went 340k, still ran good. Bought my first Altima in 2007, was 2005 model slightly used, no issues whatsoever, had 5 speed manual, pretty strong car for a heavy mid size four cylinder. Traded it for 2012 Altima SR V6 because the wife doesn't like manual anymore, coming up on 200k, no issues with CVT transmission or anything else so far. In fact, only consistent problem I've had with any Nissan is the one that Renault had nothing to do with, that being the 1996 200SX, went through an alternator every 100K, and had to do half shafts 2 times, had to replace 5th gear shift fork at 215K. Funny, I thought they were the good years? Bottom line, ALL manufacturers make garbage from time to time, can't be avoided. Toyota, Honda, Subaru have their own set of disasters, Hondas ain't great with automatic transmissions either. At the end of the day, I'd still buy Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subura. Have had all of them at one time or another, and with nothing more than basic upkeep, we've done just fine with all of them. BTW, Nissans have had timing chains for some time now, they went with timing chains on their four bangers and V6 engines long before Honda finally did. Had a chain on the 200SX back in 1996. I'm sure our experience is not the same as everybody, but I feel confident that it is universes away from unique. Finally, other than cosmetic design, Renault has practically 0 to do with the mechanical side. And just because a company is in bed with another says nothing about how the two entities actually do stuff. Not sure if Scotty has ever mentioned this, but Toyota and Subaru been in bed together for a long time. Does that mean he's going to sell his Celica since he ain't crazy about Subies? I think not. I've heard some very helpful advice from Scotty, but as with everything, take the rants with a grain of salt, cuz nothing trumps your own personal experience. Heck, no way I'm trading in my 2012 Altima at 189K anytime soon, it runs like a friggin dream! Still has gutts too.
My 2012 Murrano has 225k miles on it and it hasn't had a single problem. Maybe 2012 was a good year for Nissan in terms of engines and CVT transmissions. My only issue is rust is starting to form around the wheel wells but living in the Northeast winter and salt are tough on any car
Just depends on what newer Nissan product you're looking at. The Infiniti G coupes & sedans are some of the most reliable luxury/sports cars made today. And the Attesa AWD system they use is underrated. One of the best in my opinion and it's a rear wheel drive system until traction is needed then it transfers power to the front. I much prefer it over front wheel based AWD vehicles.
victor070 I'm on the fence about that statement. Infiniti is still kind of a niche market and production numbers are considerably lower compared to Lexus. Just one example but I believe in 2013 Infiniti made fewer than 270,000 G Sedans & fewer than 6,300 coupes. That's not many cars lol. Also, people buying these are typically looking for a more aggressive driving vehicle, bigger brakes, stiffer suspension etc. so that may also explain why they "generally" don't last last as long. Now I don't like any of the new Infiniti line up. The interior is meh at best and they don't give the driver a real feel of the road driving experience as the previous models. They're losing their core base and becoming another "me too" car company in my opinion.

My sister bought a used Nissan Altima fairly recently, and I think it may have been a victim of Big Altima Energy... The air conditioning and powe steering don't work
I had a 1997 Nissan hardbody and that truck was AWESOME! I bought it new when I was 17 and had it for years! I sold it a few years ago and regret doing it now! The truck is still running today, a kid ended up with it and takes care of it like I did!
I actually did an oil change to a 1996 Nissan Frontier with 350k miles and it looked like it can run a million easy he’s right Nissan back then we’re bullet proof but now not so much heck my pastor’s 2014 Nissan Altima’s compressor went out in 48k miles and here in Texas that’s almost a death sentence in the summer
Scotty! You should've mention that the reason Nissan changed their name to Datsun was their participation in World War II. Sailors were digging out unexploded bombs with Nissan stamped on it. They played a huge part in the Japanese Military Industrial Complex! Same thing with Mitsubishi. It's all cool now. We're all friends.
I own Altima since 2013 it was brand-new, its served me 85000k till now and i do regular maintenance sevice, but never faced any of the mentioned issues, while live in Kuwait and i drive fast harsh on gear and the engine. For me i would go with Nissan again and again! But maybe what you're saying is happening only certain models or old ones! Thank you
Great video, Scotty! I think the short answer to why most cars are so bad today is the they are almost all front-wheel-drive. Some are OK. But when car manufacturers put cost above everything else (a big reason they moved over to front-drive-vehicles) we lost the balance and driving dynamics of rear-wheel-drive vehicles. Cramming everything under the hood into tiny spaces for efficiency made them hard to work on and often costly to repair. A big reason people love pickup trucks is that they are all rear-drive (with added 4wheel drive), with tough frames and heavy-duty parts all around and they still last forever. That Datsun 240Z was a great little car. And it was rear-wheel-drive, of course.
Like your channel! Your channel is the only one that I have the ‘bell’ turned on. That being said... I live in Japan and drive a Toyota Porte. Hate that thing. Boxy, every aspect of the passenger seat is cumbersome/weird, he back seat doesn’t fold down flat, it looks cheap. Only about 55K kilometers on it but want something different. Thinking about the Corolla, they call it Axio here. Thinking of the sports model the WxB. But it has that CVT transmission. ALTHOUGH dealers treat the customers ENTIRELY differently here. I just went in for a brochure, was greeted at my car as I parked, escorted in, invited to sit down, offered @ free drink menu, given a box of tissues and some laundry detergent as I left and the salesman went out into the road and directed traffic as I left the office. So maybe they are upgrading the level of attention given to those older CVT models. Regardless...is the CVT in the newest models still problematic. What I read is that the part number for whatever they currently designate as the culprit is supposedly included in the newest models. I may hate that Porte design but it is currently problem free.
Suppose I lucked out. I own a 2011 Nissan Altima with an automatic CVT transmission that I bought new, and I've put 228K miles on it with no issues. I've not had to dump any money into it.. other than regular maintenance.
How often do you change your CVT fluid if you don't mind me asking? I have a 2014 Sentra with the CVT currently at 42,500 looking to get that many miles out of my ole girl too
@@FlexRogers 228k miles is pretty good for any modern car. Not far behind from Scotty's Celica. Even if it died flat out, I'd still consider that to be reliable. Anything over 200k without major work, IMO, is very good.

Nailed it again. I owned a '71 240Z, one of the best little cars I ever owned (tho the AC was a little weak for Southeast Texas). I also own a 2011 Nissan Versa with 63K miles, and the transmission is already burnt and failing. The high-mounted brake light failed at 4 years, and cost $150 for the part. The body is falling apart on the inside. Just not the quality that I expected.

I use to own a 95 Nissan primera, was the best car I ever owned , 3 years ago I bought a 2010 Nissan Micra n-tec to teach my kids to drive in .... I do all my own servicing , and change my oil every 4 k miles , so far it hasn’t missed a beat ...... I liked the Nissan engines due to they have a timing chain instead of a belt ... so far everything is ok , will keep you posted as to and when it picks up faults, cheers scotty for another informative video..... Well Scott hate to disappoint you but I have a 2017 Nissan Altima Sr bought new twenty thousand miles on it still working good so maybe it's just the people that's not taken care of their car but I do hate the cvt transmission and I also have an extended warranty on it just in case so we'll see

This is such a shame. When I was in high school, I bought a 1985 Nissan manual 2wd pickup. I bought it for $1,000, changed the oil regularly and replaced the starter once. I drove it for 7 years then sold it for $1,000. That machine made a huge difference in a young person's life.
I owned a '97 maxima in 2000. Awesome car. Drove like a dream, never had an issue. Sold it to buy a Dodge ram... Yeah, stupid mistake. Bought a '96 maxima in about 2010. Awesome car, never had any serious issues. Took it to 245k and then gave it to a neighbor. They drove it till 300k before dumping it because of accidents. Sad. They were a great car company.

Very true. I have a Nissan Sentra 3 years old and 68000 miles. The transmission broke just barely out of warranty. Nissan is not paying for it. It’s cost me $4500 to put in a new transmission. I swear won’t ever purchase Nissan ever. I advised to anyone I know and my family members. Never buy Nissan and infinity cars.

I have a,infiniti , it has bad wiring , had to install better engine grounds , the widow wires short out or bad ground idk , the horn and Crouse control shorted out as well . This is thier top dollor car ?

I have a 2012 Nissan Rogue and I am having issues with each of those right now.
I have a 2016 pathfinder. Runs like a champ so far. Had a 96 maxima for 15 years. 0 issues. I have 100k mile warranty on the pathfinder. I will say this. Regular services are key. They dont make em like they used to thats for sure. But damn i love my pathfinder.

As an Altima owner, I completely agree. Renault has ruined Nissan (at the very least transmission wise) the 2.5 in my Altima seems to be pretty underpowered but bulletproof. The transmission is just way too weak in my experience even with religiously followed transmission services, I have videos on my channel about the transmission failing at only 72k miles.
decembrist you should be ok with the manual as CVT’s are the real troublemakers for Nissan.
The manuals are good. Their CVT and A/T are garbage though. Another issue is they have a tendency to blow head gaskets as they age so don't let it run low on coolant or overheat.

That would be a used Honda/Toyota/Acura/Lexus haha. Even if you buy a 10yo one, as long the previous owner took good care of it you're set.
You'll even get more reliability out of an old 5-speed auto/manual Honda than a new CVT one.

Haris T mines an 2003 and has 210,000 miles and runs seriously like new! Not one thing wrong. Knock on wood! But I took it 3 hour trips everyday!
Same here 2007 and its has 269,312 miles on it and still running like a champ........ oh yeah... I bought it when it had 18,000......

That VQ was an awesome engine. I still have my 2002 with 130k. No major problems. Unfortunately, Nissan is phasing it out in favor of turbo 4s, like most other manufacturers
My family has owned several models that are widely considered “worst ever“. With all but one we had no trouble at all. What makes a car “worst“ is there are more lemons compared to other cars, often the result of poor design.but Even so most people who own them have a few or no problems. It’s just a matter of the odds. The worst car I ever owned was a Honda.
I currently own the notorious 2016 Nissan Altima.. I also worked for Nissan and after I heard all the cvt problems and recalls they had I thought for sure I had made a horrible mistake.. 4 years later still have not had a single problem with this car.. it even demolished a deer and just kept on truckin... ALL new cars are just not built to last like they used to be..

Over 300 videos I've watched in 3 years.
I now have 105K miles, NEVER a problem, because I'm very pro-active about the maintenance. Regular this often that, etc. I do the maintenance and I've had not had an issue. I purchased the car with exactly 78K in 2018. 3/17/22.
New struts, joints bearings, studs, tires, battery, spark plugs, etc. you know normal stuff.

I've seen some last 200k as long as you do your transmission flush early and do it regularly like every 30k or less.
I’ve had an ‘84 Sentra, ‘84 Maxima, ‘85 Maxima, ‘90 Stanza, ‘94 Infiniti Q45t, ‘97 Infiniti Q45t, 2001 Infiniti Q45t and now a 2017 Infiniti Q50 3.0t. Although I’ve never had a one with a CVT, all of my Nissans and Infiniti’s have been great cars that I’ve driven 125-175 thousand miles with very little issues. That’s why I keep buying them.
Russell, I too had a 85 nissan 300zx, 97 nissan sentra, 99 altima, and bought a 2018 manual transmission sentra as a commuting car. I have always been leery of the "one speed" CVT transmission hence why I got the manual transmission sentra. Every single one of the nissans I have ever owned have been manual transmissions and all were good cars.

Thats great , but as a guy who has owned high milage cars and self repaired them ,i know that car had had plenty of things replaced on it . Which is normal , its when engines and transmissions go bad and more than once , and early its junk .
Im the same way with my 98 maxima :D got 367k miles rn but i made it all beautiful so now its my long long distance road trip car. Never gave me a problem other than a battery cable going bad from corrosion!

Because he's wrong. Renault never told Nissan to use CVTs, that was not a byproduct of Renault taking part-ownership of the company. Nissan stayed independent, and Renault has smartly never used the CVT except for in the Koleos. You Americans wouldn't know about that SUV.

Ultimately they want people to lease electric cars, they pay 500 bucks per month for a washing machine on wheels and after 5 years the manufacturer takes it back, scraps it and the consumer gets a new model and the payments continue. The motor industry wants to adopt the Apple business model.

Pedro Sueta it’s been 5 years since Apple changed the charge to lightning. They recently changed to usb type c because that is a very powerful port especially for the MacBooks the fact about type C is that it can charge your computer power a display give you a mouse and keyboard and a lot more. It’s pushing for innovation. You want to see charging cables changing a lot? Look at Dell they have like 10 different chargers for their computers

Sure, it saves space but you end up carrying other accessories just to interface "legacy" devices. By the way, Dell has been consistent with their power cords, it is HP that has different power plug and wattage requirement for their desktop and laptops.

I own a 2015 370z Nismo and it’s an amazing car. I can agree nissan’s quality went down, but the Z and GTR line are amazing and the VQ engine lasts a lifetime if maintained well.

VQs, VRs and the old VGs are all amazing motors that pack a lot of power and still be pretty reliable. I personally love the VQ56 in the Nissan/Infiniti SUVs because they are bullet proof and sound more like an AMG V8 but are easier to work on like an LS series motor.

Very harsh. For the last 20 years, Renault has, on average, produced more reliable cars than all the VAG manufacturers, except maybe Skoda. Here in Ireland, VW or anything German is considered to be reliable, even though all available data shows they produce less than averagely reliable cars, while Renaults are perceived to be a disaster, despite the data showing they are slightly above average in terms of reliability, and reasonably cheap to maintain (here in Europe, with their huge dealer network, and fairly cheap and readily available parts).
These reputations were earned back in the 70s, and those perceptions have persisted.
After saying all that, what do I drive?

It's not Renault fault, it's Nissan fault. Renault just selling diesel engines to Nissan, and they work compared to japanese ones, petrol and diesel. I have had Primera P12 with japanese engine.. 58 000 miles, and engine was absolutely dead, burn oil like hell, high petrol consumption, and just sold it out, and switched to old BMW E46 1998 Petrol. Which runs all the time, and not seen any problems like the Nissan's one. I have and 2 french cars, Citroen and Renault, and they're much reliable than Nissan.

Vw may have many reliability issues with certain weak points/common faults etc and could cause lower scores on whatever surveys you use. But over a longer period of time and high mileages, Vws are superior in build quality and materials to Renault. They are considered reliable, because they are. It’s why you see so many old Vws around on the roads still.
Renault is the only useful french car brand, their cars are reliable, they have a good price for what you get and the 2019 generations look sick. The new Megane, the Koleos, the Talisman Grandtour - all nice cars for an easy price.

Part of the problem is that a highly competitive market puts so much cost pressure on the car companies that they can only go with the cheapest manufacturer and materials (this is partly due to customers who buy based on price and styling, rather than reliability and partly stockholder short-sightedness among lots of other reasons). This has resulted in an industry-wide stampede towards Chinese parts. The Chinese car parts market is flooded with fly-by-night trading companies all willing to find fly-by-night manufacturers willing to rip off designs, substitute materials, and cut quality corners to do business. They cherry-pick the parts that are first sent to their customers for design and production validation, then ship the marginal crap in quantities.
If you are unlucky enough to receive fewer parts that meet your quality criteria than you need for your build schedule, you won't get replacement parts until the next boat, and good luck with the quality of those.
If we TRULY want reliable cars, we have to, EN MASSE, stop buying the crappy brands until they offer really good warranties without squirrelling out of claims, and they then start paying more attention to reliability. This will probably result in higher costs, but we want that over being stranded by the side of the road.
Nissan for me. Best. Best. It's all in its maintenance. I've never been troubled.

Yep Scotty hit the nail on the head. Nissans USED TO BE good cars back in the 90's and earlier. Once Renault got ahold of the company, reliability and overall quality have plummeted. I won't touch another Nissan until they stop injecting them with inferior Renault quality.

get a standart transmission. however we had mazda 2,3,5 and all the automatics survived easily 150k miles in israeli hot weather without any service (transmission is not serviced at all here. i guess the dealers want it to die quicker and are too lazy. they claim it is lifetime oil and filter). and the engines about 200k miles while oil is changed every 9k miles. with the hot israeli weather and city stop and go traffic it is pretty decent. toyotas and hondas are pretty similar however their transmissions last a bit longer because oil is changed every 40k miles.

Nissan cars will last as long as other cars if you do maintenance. I bought a 2007 Altima 2.5S with 213000 kms and still going strong. No CVT issues, because maintenance is done.

Nissan cvt is what ruined Nissan. They are cheap to build (good for Nissan) and expensive to service (even better for Nissan but crap for owners)
I am one Nissan owner who completely disagrees with this. I actually prefer the way a CVT drives over a standard transmission. You don't get shift shock when the car shifts at high speed. As a matter of fact you never FEEL the car shift it is very smooth and faster off the line than a gear based transmission. Plus they are very good on gas. This is my second Maxima and my first one did 350,000 miles.
Not faster off the line against a car with a Dsg transmission.
CVT is boring and drab I had a Nissan CVT in the late 80's new Altima worst transmission ever.
CVT has improved but it is still lackluster.

This is NOT a sports car it is a fast commuter car designed to have good gas mileage but also be fun to drive and reasonable prices. It is all of those things.

Post merger, Altimas, Sentras and Versas are all god awful crap. My friend has a 2016 Sentra and at 45,000 miles, the transmission is starting to have problems. He did the transmission fluid changes frequently. I had a 2015 Versa that I got rid of at 92,000 that was having major issues. Yes I drove it a lot, but it shouldn't have had any transmission issues and I even changed the fluid ahead of schedule. Lucky to get any money out of that junk. Garbage vehicles. And the CVT drives like crud. I have a Mazda 3 2018 now and it is way better than any Altima, Sentra or Versa I have driven. I have driven all three.

I had a ‘84 Maxima, a 93 Maxima, a 96 Maxima and a 98 Frontier. All were excellent! The CVT horrors took me away from buying another Nissan.

Mercedes 722.3 is worth a mention, at least in reliability, although its 4-speed. It has 2 oil pumps even, second one works even when towing so no need to remove drive shaft.

Drive Car the general motors 4t80e used in cadillacs. Never had issues because the fluid didnt have to get change unlike their attached Northstar engine that was neglected, and thus failed. The 4t80e was used on many platforms, and was rarely the cause of failure
I had an Infinity for 10 years and then jumped into a 2014 Altima and never had a problem with the engine. I put 100,000 on the Infiniti and 50,000 on the Altima, all I do is drive. In my experience, they hold up pretty well.
By Scotty's definition a car is not reliable unless it can go 200,000 miles without any major problems.
Because if your car only makes it to 100,000 its junk. Period. That's only 5 years of driving for something that cost 30,000-40,000 dollars.
If the engine and transmission don't last atleast 250,000 miles the car is junk. You shouldn't have to buy a new car or shell out thousands to rebuild an engine or transmission every 5 years or 150,000 miles. That defeats the purpose of buying a vehicle new.
I am at the 107K mark in my Nissan Maxima and having some issues... especially with the gear shift -_- Lets not talk about their dim lights, which I need to replace the whole headlight assembly.

The CVT killed Nissan's cars. My Ex's Altima had trans problems from 40,000 miles. After about a dozen trips to the dealer, a call to Nissan Corporate, and a ton of BS, we finally got the CVT replaced under warranty, all for it to fail again.
Shouldn't the CVT oil be changed like every 20k miles in the first place?

I have an Infiniti G37.. made by Nissan.. they have excellent reliability and it has had pretty much no issues all I do is change oil and do basic maintenance myself

I have a 2015 altima with 170,000 miles on it with no issues. I haven't even changed the transmission fluid on it since i got it.
My mom has a Nissan Murano with just under 29,000 miles. Nissan just replaced the CVT in it under warranty after it's 3rd trip back to the dealer. Once you put the gear selector in drive it would take 7-8 seconds to actually go INTO drive. I used to be a huge Nissan fan. My first vehicle was a 1997 Nissan Hardbody pickup. I sold it about 10 years ago, it had 140,000 miles and the guy I sold it to is still driving it to this day.
TennesseeMatt all these weird transmissions these companies are using are junk. CVTs are junk. Fords Powershift Dual Clutch automatic transmissions are junk. I have a Ford Fiesta. But they put them in the Focus too and maybe the Fusions if I’m not mistaken. The ONLY good thing about the crappy Ford transmissions are normally just the clutch goes out. (It’s two manual transmissions acting as one attempting to simulate an automatic transmission.) The clutches aren’t ridiculously expensive (couple hundred bucks.) However over time replacing lots of clutches could add up. Luckily, mines still under warranty. There’s a class action lawsuit going on right now against Ford in regards to it.
I had considered buying a Kia Soul turbo a few months back. But once I found out they were ONLY offered with a DCT I quickly scratched that one off the list.

Jerm Inator The Fusion got lucky and they used a normal 6 speed, but it still had problems. The Fusion Sport used a ASIAN transmission and was a good unit. The Powershit is worthless. My ex drives a Fuckus with that turd of a transaxle and he’s had to replace the clutch pack twice since he got it a year ago, and it only has 80k. It’s a joke!

I had a Nissan Juke for 3 years. It was brand new when I bought it. Every year I had to get a new battery because it would leave me stranded yearly. The last straw was when it left me stranded three times in one week and I had run out of roadside assistance. I had it towed to the Nissan dealer which was about $125. They did not offer to reimburse me for that tow. As soon as they replaced the battery, for the third time during the ownership of the vehicle, I drove it across the street to Toyota and traded it in for a Highlander. Never again Nissan! 😝

I love Nissan, never had any issues and I’be had 3. ‘13 Sentra, ‘15 Altima, ‘18 Rogue. My grandma’s 1996 Maxima would still be running I guarantee it if she hadn’t bought a new car back in 2013. That car was fun to drive!

We own an Xtrail with the CVT and a decade later, never had problems other than a new battery.
I dont think Nissans make bad engines but are very sensitive and prone to failure if you dont maintain them properly.

Its not a truck. Its a compact SUV and in terms of strength and reliability, a normal Auto and Manual are stronger for sure which is ideal if modifications and upgrades are your thing but its just a family barge for us at this point.
In terms of off road, we drive it for holidays to places on the East coast of Australia. We take it on the occasional off road track to get to a lookout or camping spot. Im not sure how you would classify Medium grade tracks but it get get through some smallish ruts just fine and we've even taken it on the beach a couple times.
There are plenty modified XTrails on the road and the internet and they all love the fuel economy of a small car with the space and capability of a wagon. 10/10 would recommend if you need something to take your family on road trips.
I purchased a 2009 Altima used back in 2010. I currently am still driving it with over 360km. My engine is running fine. Never had an issue more than regular maintenance

I totally agree with you! I've own several Nissans over the years but when I added my 2011 Nissan Maxima SV it's been an headache! Just has 90,000 miles on it and my trans has been replaced twice at the dealership, I would never buy another Nissan. I would love to file a class action lawsuit against Nissan because everyone I know that owns the Altima or Maxima has had Transmission problems and replaced by the dealer.

@@KyLesCaster my 2014 Versa manual says replace the CVT fluid at 60k miles. I mentioned it to the dealership and they said they would test the fluid and I might not need it replaced for another 10k miles. I said nope, at 60k miles, you're replacing that fluid regardless what that test says.

The old Grand Marquis no longer had reverse (gear or the lights!) or tail light lenses. So my dad won in court and spent the money on something else. Then he taped up the lights and drove it without reverse.

After multiple trips to the dealer and about 7 months into ownership, my 43k mile Sentra had its CVT replaced under warranty. Hell, a customer just walked into the shop with a Nissan and the CVT is acting up. Biggest piece of crap ever made.
Tri State Rideshare mine went out at 44K. I’ve also had to replace the strut mounts and the rear shocks already!!
My audi has cvt and 90k miles. No issues at all. Smooth as silk. I think Nissan cvt, s are not as well made?

@@jamieburton8219 2007 Murano SL AWD, purchased new. By 2009 rusted everywhere, tried to add a tow hitch and metal frame would peel off like a cracked eggshell. Eventually got it on, but was not easy. A lot of the standard bolts were so rusted that when I needed to remove them, they just snapped off from the welded threaded nut part. I've never seen a welded piece just snap off before that day.

Since this is Thursday, I'm going to give away a broken down Nissan with rusted exhaust, bad blower motor, worn out CVT, and engine that leaks oil.
I’ve owned 3 Nissans, a 1978 510 hatchback 5 speed with a 2.0 liter I4, a 1986 Sentra 5 speed with a 1.6 liter I4 and a 2013 Pathfinder 3.5 liter V6 with a CVT. All performed well with no significant issues. I had transmission shuttering issues on the CVT but it was fixed with a PCM re-program. Nissan was very responsive with the recall on the CVT and extended the warranty to 8 years. Nissan even recalled the pathfinder a second time to see if there was excessive wear on the CVT metal drive belt and they found no excessive wear. The way some people drive their cars, they should only be allowed to ride bicycles. My pathfinder performs well and I intend to drive it for many years. Scotty gives great advice, but sometimes he’s full of beans.
James Nasto idk bro, my mom has a 2013 (2014?) pathfinder and baby's it. Interior panels started falling off the A pillars in 2 months. Replaced rear bearings twice. And had dadshboard electrical issue, I can't recall what. Frankly I feel they are crap.
I'm on my 2nd Nissan. 2008 Altima was the best car I ever had. So last year I purchased new Murano. It had a quite few assembly errors. I took care of them myself, except for one. Unfortunately, this particular problem is out of warranty after one year only, so I have open complaint case with Nissan. I hope they will take care of the problem. But if not, I will do, and my Murano will be the last Nissan ever for me and my family...
You have never owned a late model 4cyl altima. Nuff said.
*Nissan LEAF's are a good exception to this rule.* There is no CVT transmissio to break, no muffler to leak and fall off, no fuel system or emmissions parts. The battery is rock solid reliable and so is the motor which is connected to the road without a transmission. It's so simple it couldn't break if it wanted too. You only really need to buy super-cheap electricity, new tires every once in a while, windshield wiper fluid, wipers, and the occasional light bulb. I've been driving LEAFs for six years now and I couldn't be happier with them. They are very quick, handle pretty good, and are a lot of fun to drive around town with all that electric torque and very low center of mass. (You should see these things on roundabouts - I can go 3x the speed of any suburban safely while turning in those) I picked up my current one after a three year lease for $9600. It's the best car I've ever owned, even better than my '96 Trans-Am which was a lot of fun but equally painful at the repair shop and financing. The LEAF is just plain fun, a bit bug-eyed, but fun. It's sort of Nissan's red-headed stepchild, included but not honored in its product line up, which is sad because it's their best product.
Actually the Nissan Leaf is now developing battery drain problems. U can thank Renault for that.

I had a 2008 Nissan Titan with 265,000 miles no issues EVER, sold it and I still see it around running strong, got me a Toyota Tundra, that was my biggest mistake had trade it for a new Titan again, never going to buy another brand other than Nissan
I have to disagree with you on several points. I had a 2008 Nissan Rogue SL AWD. It had over 300,000 miles on it when I traded it for a 2017 Rogue Sport SL. The 08 NEVER had any CVT issues. I think that the key was either the fact that I kept the trans fluid changed, or, the fact that this model was actually built in Japan, not the US. In either case, the CVT can last. It is just maintenance that makes it last, as with any other Auto type trans. 2. I have a 2003 Nissan Frontier that I have been driving for 17 years now. Great little truck with the 2.4L four cyl, and a manual 5 speed. While it only has 113,000 miles on it, it is very reliable, and gets 26mpg. It is probably good for at least another 200,000 miles. Again, key to reliability for any car or truck is maintenance. People seem to skip that part, and then blame the manufacturer for the issues that they have. I will stick with my Nissan's. They have been very good for us. Thanks,

I agree. My Altima and my Rogue have not given me any problems. I've driven mid 70s and 80s model Fords and Chevys that were a pain to keep repaired and driveable. With regular maintenance my rice-burners have been a dream in comparison.

I am and always will be a Nissan fan. I have 3 of them. A ‘94 Sentra with over 400,000 miles, a 350Z that was single turbo on a stock block for 10 years and is now twin turbo on a built motor and a 2003 Infiniti M45. All of them have been amazingly reliable and fun to drive.
First car at 17 was 93 b13 sentra se-r ... crashed it bought another 91 blew motor after few months used parts to fix crashed one then totalled it weekend I got back LOL...Damn sr20 motors...then got a 200sx se-r then traded for another 93 se-r put a sr20de-t avenir swap in it ..just sold it 2 years ago so from 17-32 loved nissan..still have a 06 g35 sedan 6m/t fun car ...trying to find se-r around somewhere so nissan b in my blood 4ever..hard to find classic 90's nissan se-r anymore in good shape

I've owned a Renault Megane R.S 265 Trophy for the past 4 years and the only thing gone wrong is a broken engine mount rubber which cost me ~$250 to replace including labor.

I don't like that Scotty Scares me in virtually every single time Scotty talks about the Altima, it really bothers me because he constantly bad mouths my Altima, but I still listen to Scotty, I'd be stupid not to. Over 300 videos I've watched in 3 years.
I now have 105K miles, NEVER a problem, because I'm very pro-active about the maintenance. Regular this often that, etc. I do the maintenance and I've had not had an issue. I purchased the car with exactly 78K in 2018. 3/17/22.
New struts, joints bearings, studs, tires, battery, spark plugs, etc. you know normal stuff.
So TRUE...I had a 1984 Datsun/Nissan Sentra (had both badges) that I drove for over 24 years and hardly anything ever went wrong! So reliable, and replacement parts were so cheap!

I used to have a '71, 510 station wagon with a 1600cc engine and it had over 230k miles when I sold it to some friends in the late '90s and rust finally took it's toll around the bottoms of the engine compartment and they had to scrap it.

Those engines scare me we have 40 of them where I work with the 3.5L and at around 96k thing's start breaking.. I don't know much about the 2.7L but it seems to me these engines have a lot more stress on them to produce the power as opposed to a V8.. But I'm not Engineer so..

My girlfriend has a 2010 Nissan Altima. 380000 km still going strong, zero issues with CVT. Never even changed the transmission fluid. 2016 and up they added a factory cooler to the transmission.
Same owned a Nissan for almost 10 years
Have a 2008 Altima 288.000 miles no problems with the transmission ever! No electronics went out just regular maintenance everyone has a Nissan now days
@@imlamar2011 It seems like CVTs are a hit or miss proposition. I've heard horror stories about Nissan CVTs going out with 60k and also stories like yours about good longevity, including my brother's. My Subaru has a Jatco CVT in it, so I'm at 100k with my fingers crossed.

Nissan is good until around early 2004. The deal happened in 1999 but it took them a few years to get structured. Nissan CVT's are total garbage. They are getting better, but still not good as Honda and Toyota. Nissan is giving 7 year 100k mile warranty cause they basically have to sell one. Their cars don't hold as much value as Honda or Toyota ether. If you get a new Nissan, find one in a manual.

I remember my families 4 door Navy Blue Datsun. It was a great vehicle...with multiple costly repairs😒😒 and was laid to rest 10 years into owning the vehicle.
My parents had a Datsun Bluebird that they sold to our neighbor and I STILL see it today. It looks beatup as hell, but it STILL RUNS. Lol Nissan in my country had the B13s that was ubiquitous. You could get parts easily and it was the “everymans” car. Now the Frontier has become the Nissan car choice.

Datsun made the European cars have more of what is now the standard equipment in. But the cars were only made to last 2 years. They would rust to nothing after that. The cars were cheaper, more fuel efficient, and more reliable than the other cars available, but not made to last. The engines are still very good.

Great timing... Daughter bought a versa note new in 2014 against my reccomendations... Now today its in the garage and it looks like the cvt is dying. Speedometer drops and the dreaded cvt noise... And to make it better the wheel bearings are totally shot as in rotor rubbing the spindle... And at 61000 miles. Just past the trans warranty. I used to be an ase master and dreaded cars like this. I miss the days of the good Nissan's like the ones mentioned and the B trucks were pretty durable as well.

She got it anyways cause her parents said it's a good car. She didn't do any maintenance on the car, never checked fluids or anything unless I did. And anything I said she needed to do she never listened and her dad said that I'm wrong basically. I dumped her 3 months ago. And last week I see on her Facebook bout her car being broke down and that her transmission went out at 64K and that Nissan doesn't wanna touch it because she voided the warranty by never changing the fuckin oil since she got it and is acting like it ain't her fault. I definitely made a comment on her post I couldn't resist it

I had an Infiniti G35 coupe and G37 coupe. The first thing I noticed was the paint quality wasn't that good and I started getting rust spots in the strangest places, like on the roof. In my G37 coupe, the dashboard started to melt...and I mean really bad. Nissan would not replace it. I traded that sucker in on a German made Mercedes roadster. I've been happy ever since. I'm done with Nissan.

Just get a Nissan Truck. Keep the fluids changed. If you have a 2005-2010 Frontier, replace the radiator or bypass the trans cooler--the radiators were bad and would leak coolant into the trans cooler. Keeping your coolant changed would prevent this, but a 2011 radiator was the best solution. My 2010 has 325,000+ miles and is still going strong. My 2002 SC is being retired at 460,000 and runs well, but has a leaking rear engine seal and a couple of other issues, according to my son.

Nissan settled a class action lawsuit because of this issue. The xterra, pathfinder and Frontier were all part of it. Yes the trans cooler would leak. It was in the radiator. You would get a pink milkshake in the radiator when coolant and trans fluid leaked. We live in Illinois. Our 2007 Pathfinder had this happen in WV while on vacation. FOrtunately, the bill was paid by Nissan because of the lawsuit which extended the drivetrain warranty. As Matt said, put the trans cooler outside the radiator to avoid this issue altogether. Avoid a ruined vacation or worse.
@@tomdickharryjane yes but I'm pretty sure the extended warranty has expired for almost all the affected models. Plus I think it was limited to a hundred thousand miles. So if you have one of these you better put a bypass or new radiator for sure. New transmission and radiators going to run you about 5,000. At this point that would be just a salvage value vehicle. The extended warranty would probably only cover half the cost at Best. and probably a 2010 model would be the only one still covered.
@@HiPlains1 Yes the extended warranty was good for 8 years 80,000 miles. Ours went bad at about 7 years 72,000 miles (whew). It covered the full cost, thankfully. At this point yes all affected will be out of warranty. And yes, bypass the transmission cooler and put an external one on at this point. One other issue is the timing chain. Apparently another Achilles heel on these models.
@@tomdickharryjane plus the fuel sending sensor would go out like clockwork. that probably require a new fuel pump as well. I actually had Nissan Goodwill my entire amount as the warranty didn't cover the whole amount but it happened with only 50,000 miles so I guess they felt bad and paid for the whole job. I just bought a brand new frontier 2019. It's considered the most reliable midsize at this point. But man It took Nissan way too long to fix that transmission ordeal.

The 80's and 90's Nissan trucks were super dependable. I own an 94 pathfinder with 600,000km on it, original motor, second trans. And a 2002 Xterra Supercharged. I feel like 2004 was the end of the Nissan glory days.
I have a Nissan Rogue 2012 and this is the 3rd time in 6-1/2 years that I’ve had to replace the gear-shifting assembly.
You are so right - my wife had 2011 rogue and under carriage was rusting out and one of rear stabilizer bar rusted thru . Removed it and traded in for another 2018 rogue - sorry bad choice again . The suv doesn’t have 16 k miles and already had an air bag sensor replaced . Unreal!! You hit right on the nail - won’t buy a Nissan product ever again .
Damn...Mom owns a 2013 Nissan Rogue and it's never had any major issues..Just scheduled maintenance and she's fine...No rust or sensor issues here.
It also depends on which state you purchased the vehicle, who assembled the vehicle and how often its maintained...If you maintain your car..like you main your body..then you have no problem..otherwise yikes...problems all around.
@Terri, both SUVs are dealer kept . Scotty is right on point - specially with the latest 2018 rogue we are very diligent in keeping up with all service intervals - 16k and a failed air bag sensor was found . Not good !!
Now take a look at the Undercarriage of your mom’s 2015 suv - you might find rust at the rear suspension. We never missed a service interval with my wife’s old 11 rogue my family used it as a daily driver so it has to be a reliable car .
I will be looking at either Toyota or Hyundai for our next vehicles. Not a pleased customer.

@@thething72 I will agree with you that the 2019-2020 Nissan Rogue's are not the best! The best Nissan Rogues in my opinion and experience as a daily driver are the 2013 Nissan Rogues. It drives better, handles curves better, easy viewing everywhere. I just can get with the new Rogues.
I drive a 2012 Nissan Versa. A few things have gone out on it that are a pain to replace, namely the upstream oxygen sensor and the blower motor for the AC, but that’s about it. A little over 110k miles on it.
If Nissan CVTs are trash, explain the Honda CRV, Civic, Accord, etc. Honda’s known for reliability, are they still considered it? Especially since they’ve been adding turbos which is also known to reduce reliability.

I bought a Honda Logo off my neighbour at 20,000Kms with a badly juddering CVT, drove it like that for a while then worked out that some numpty had put Dexron III in instead of the proper special (and pricey) Honda CVT fluid, I changed the fluid, juddering went away and now it's at 145,000 and has run flawlessly.

I worked for Nissan back in the late 80's and early 90's. They had a paradigm shift from making those sporty cars and having multiple racing divisions here in USA. Some idiots moved away from that claiming the public wanted family cars instead. When they cut the R&D for stodgy looking sedans and desire for profit, they took a slide toward making junkier cars. Just look at what followed over time. I don't know for sure that they were already sliding prior to that, but if you remember they dominated the IMSA GTP class for three years in a row during that time. They had some real talent on their payrolls here in USA. They had some awesome racing facilities here in USA, and winning championships sold cars through television advertising. When the recession hit, they cut back, and and they changed to poor leadership. Tom Miganelli was out at Nissan in Gardena, and replaced by a twit - they dumbed down Nissan and eventually moved out of Gardena. Same kind of stupidity at Infiniti. That may not be the only reason, but it sure seemed dumb to me at the time. Not to mention the jobs lost to people who had incredible talent, gone from the corporation for good. Many of us were proud to work for Nissan. As much as I loved it, when their cars started turning to crap, I never bought one. I bought Isuzu's and Toyota's instead, and had great success with them. Remember the Toyota Loving Care? They fixed broken stuff for me even when the car was out of warranty (when they knew and cheerfully admitted they had a problem area). That was the time when the Japs saw it as an embarrassment for the car to breakdown.
I feel blessed, or super lucky, one of the two. I'm on my 3rd Nissan, first one was a 1996 200SX SER, decent car, went 340k, still ran good. Bought my first Altima in 2007, was 2005 model slightly used, no issues whatsoever, had 5 speed manual, pretty strong car for a heavy mid size four cylinder. Traded it for 2012 Altima SR V6 because the wife doesn't like manual anymore, coming up on 200k, no issues with CVT transmission or anything else so far. In fact, only consistent problem I've had with any Nissan is the one that Renault had nothing to do with, that being the 1996 200SX, went through an alternator every 100K, and had to do half shafts 2 times, had to replace 5th gear shift fork at 215K. Funny, I thought they were the good years? Bottom line, ALL manufacturers make garbage from time to time, can't be avoided. Toyota, Honda, Subaru have their own set of disasters, Hondas ain't great with automatic transmissions either. At the end of the day, I'd still buy Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subura. Have had all of them at one time or another, and with nothing more than basic upkeep, we've done just fine with all of them. BTW, Nissans have had timing chains for some time now, they went with timing chains on their four bangers and V6 engines long before Honda finally did. Had a chain on the 200SX back in 1996. I'm sure our experience is not the same as everybody, but I feel confident that it is universes away from unique. Finally, other than cosmetic design, Renault has practically 0 to do with the mechanical side. And just because a company is in bed with another says nothing about how the two entities actually do stuff. Not sure if Scotty has ever mentioned this, but Toyota and Subaru been in bed together for a long time. Does that mean he's going to sell his Celica since he ain't crazy about Subies? I think not. I've heard some very helpful advice from Scotty, but as with everything, take the rants with a grain of salt, cuz nothing trumps your own personal experience. Heck, no way I'm trading in my 2012 Altima at 189K anytime soon, it runs like a friggin dream! Still has gutts too.
My 2012 Murrano has 225k miles on it and it hasn't had a single problem. Maybe 2012 was a good year for Nissan in terms of engines and CVT transmissions. My only issue is rust is starting to form around the wheel wells but living in the Northeast winter and salt are tough on any car
Do yourself a favor and spray a quart of oil on the entire bottom of the frame before winder season.
Just depends on what newer Nissan product you're looking at. The Infiniti G coupes & sedans are some of the most reliable luxury/sports cars made today. And the Attesa AWD system they use is underrated. One of the best in my opinion and it's a rear wheel drive system until traction is needed then it transfers power to the front. I much prefer it over front wheel based AWD vehicles.

victor070 I'm on the fence about that statement. Infiniti is still kind of a niche market and production numbers are considerably lower compared to Lexus. Just one example but I believe in 2013 Infiniti made fewer than 270,000 G Sedans & fewer than 6,300 coupes. That's not many cars lol. Also, people buying these are typically looking for a more aggressive driving vehicle, bigger brakes, stiffer suspension etc. so that may also explain why they "generally" don't last last as long. Now I don't like any of the new Infiniti line up. The interior is meh at best and they don't give the driver a real feel of the road driving experience as the previous models. They're losing their core base and becoming another "me too" car company in my opinion.

My sister bought a used Nissan Altima fairly recently, and I think it may have been a victim of Big Altima Energy... The air conditioning and powe steering don't work

I had a 1997 Nissan hardbody and that truck was AWESOME! I bought it new when I was 17 and had it for years! I sold it a few years ago and regret doing it now! The truck is still running today, a kid ended up with it and takes care of it like I did!
I actually did an oil change to a 1996 Nissan Frontier with 350k miles and it looked like it can run a million easy he’s right Nissan back then we’re bullet proof but now not so much heck my pastor’s 2014 Nissan Altima’s compressor went out in 48k miles and here in Texas that’s almost a death sentence in the summer

Scotty! You should've mention that the reason Nissan changed their name to Datsun was their participation in World War II. Sailors were digging out unexploded bombs with Nissan stamped on it. They played a huge part in the Japanese Military Industrial Complex! Same thing with Mitsubishi. It's all cool now. We're all friends.

I own Altima since 2013 it was brand-new, its served me 85000k till now and i do regular maintenance sevice, but never faced any of the mentioned issues, while live in Kuwait and i drive fast harsh on gear and the engine. For me i would go with Nissan again and again! But maybe what you're saying is happening only certain models or old ones! Thank you
I had a 2012 Nissan Sentra for 3 years and never gave me problems. It had 90k miles when I got rid of it and passed it on to my dad he still has it.
I have a 175k mile 2015 Altima with a CVT and I’ve only changed the tranny fluid once along with regular maintenance
Great video, Scotty! I think the short answer to why most cars are so bad today is the they are almost all front-wheel-drive. Some are OK. But when car manufacturers put cost above everything else (a big reason they moved over to front-drive-vehicles) we lost the balance and driving dynamics of rear-wheel-drive vehicles. Cramming everything under the hood into tiny spaces for efficiency made them hard to work on and often costly to repair. A big reason people love pickup trucks is that they are all rear-drive (with added 4wheel drive), with tough frames and heavy-duty parts all around and they still last forever. That Datsun 240Z was a great little car. And it was rear-wheel-drive, of course.

I live in Japan and drive a Toyota Porte. Hate that thing. Boxy, every aspect of the passenger seat is cumbersome/weird, he back seat doesn’t fold down flat, it looks cheap. Only about 55K kilometers on it but want something different. Thinking about the Corolla, they call it Axio here. Thinking of the sports model the WxB. But it has that CVT transmission. ALTHOUGH dealers treat the customers ENTIRELY differently here. I just went in for a brochure, was greeted at my car as I parked, escorted in, invited to sit down, offered @ free drink menu, given a box of tissues and some laundry detergent as I left and the salesman went out into the road and directed traffic as I left the office. So maybe they are upgrading the level of attention given to those older CVT models.
Regardless...is the CVT in the newest models still problematic. What I read is that the part number for whatever they currently designate as the culprit is supposedly included in the newest models. I may hate that Porte design but it is currently problem free.
Suppose I lucked out. I own a 2011 Nissan Altima with an automatic CVT transmission that I bought new, and I've put 228K miles on it with no issues. I've not had to dump any money into it.. other than regular maintenance.
How often do you change your CVT fluid if you don't mind me asking? I have a 2014 Sentra with the CVT currently at 42,500 looking to get that many miles out of my ole girl too
I have the same car and year. All I do is the maintenance as well. However I do it myself 123k miles

@@FlexRogers 228k miles is pretty good for any modern car. Not far behind from Scotty's Celica. Even if it died flat out, I'd still consider that to be reliable. Anything over 200k without major work, IMO, is very good.
