    Hey Riders, thanks for the watch and like! As we are all here to support each other in the ADV community the question today is, what mistakes have you made or seen others make that should be mentioned here that will help give the rest of us a heads up?

      Nice T7. I have the same model and color and have opted to go with black-out styling; even to the extent of my riding suit. Not cool in the Georgia summer! Even with all the vents open, and liner(s) removed, stopping for more than 5 minutes in the hot sun gets a bit uncomfortable. Summer is the forth season I obviously did not place much thought to when purchasing my four season suit... where a lighter color would have been a better choice.
      So, my advice is choose the color of your gear carefully. Unless you can afford one for each season.

      Theirs several off clothing brands new to the market I found to be almost as good, yes you might need to modify the protection inserts but it will save a ton of money.

      I was beeing laughed at for wearing a working boots for trail rides (which is now worn out) cause I cant afford it here in the Philippines. But hopefully will be able to buy one soon before I decide to quit totally.

    Great insight as always!
    Minor tips I have learned.
    Keep a thin neck gater for the cold wind on your neck, get gloves that fit WELL, and protect your hands from cold wind, and wont give you pain on a long ride. Have a shell jacket of some sort to cut the wind, later in the ride when it gets colder. Have a ziplock sandwich bag for your cell phone for the rain storm. Bring extra ear plugs for your ears on that long ride.

    Hello from Sweden!
    I am a 50-years old lady who comes from 30 years of sportbikes!
    All new to grawel and offroad. Bought my first ad- bike this spring.
    Boy is it fun? Ben to an offroadcourse to learn the basics. Planing to ride TET Sweden and Norway next summer. Have been on 2-3 days of soloridingtrips this summer. Just love the life of riding away in the sunset with campinggear and just make my life an adventure!!

    Good stuff as always. Thoughtfully put together.
    Big issue is: using your gear on the bike for the first time on the big group ride. You should be doing smaller check rides either around town or with one or two buddies for a couple hours. Don't find out you don't like the way your gloves chafe four hours into a 4 day trip.

      Exactly. And imagine how genuinely excited I was a month ago to intentionally go on a day ride in the rain - to test out my new rain gear miles from home instead of on a trip hundreds of miles from home.

    I can totally attest to the pant leg. Being a short rider I got a size too large and snagged the pant on the footpeg. Thank goodness I was able to regain control, but it could have been worse.

    That last point is so very true.
    My vest failed the first day on a multi day roundtrip to Oregon this past October (sub freezing temps and snow). Luckily I view the heated gear as accessory and always pack my warm layers with me.

    Forums are a great source of used, quality riding gear. My Aerostich Darien jacket cost me just 250 bucks on ADV Rider, and when I got it it looked perfect. The same jacket new is close to $700. There are a lot of good items for sale, but you must be patient to find what you need at the right size and right price.

    Nailed it regarding quality gear - my pair of Tech 7s going strong after 12 years. They were in such good condition I had them re-soled. Same with my Klim gear.

      People will laugh at a person who buys the expensive gear and brag about how their's cost 1/10th, blah..., but if you have the misfortune to travel with them you will realize they are not comfortable, and it all their own fault. And no I will not lend you a pair of my water proof gloves because you bought split hide 10 to a pack work gloves for $12 and only have one pair left...

    You know I always see stuff about “staying warm” and dry etc. But would love to see more solutions for extremely hot weather. It seems like there’s few options out there. I’m rarely ever cold but hot weather roasts me in my gear and I have yet to find a solution.

    yes , cost per mile or cost per use is what I use on gear cost/use and find that gear cost nothing depending on how many times you use it, Great points in this video. Thanks!

    Good advice on electrically heated clothes. Here in Canada I see too many buying electrically heated gear and expecting it to work flawlessly. I have a jacket and gloves but have re-engineered the complete electrical system to allow me to use them IF required. It is not for the faint of heart.

    My First pair of Forma ADV boots lasted me around 8 years and about 100,000kms in all types of riding and terrain . Do good 👍 I brought another pair and 20.00 cheaper 8 years latter . 👍

    Another video with invaluable tips learnt from the real world. #2 was me to a T. Came from street riding to adv riding. Initially I was just going to use armour in adv jacket and pants so bought sizes to suit. Soon realised how pathetic standard adv gear armour to be so upgraded to an AS armour jacket and knee guards underneath. It all fits well but no air pocket so you start to feel the wind chill on the jacket pretty quick.

    The Neck Cover is a good idea (better than just a scarf). I must look into a waterproof Neck Tube or something that wont flap about.

    Great video as always. The one thing I would add is to not settle for gear that doesn't fit right, or doesn't suit your needs. Even the most expensive gear or THE BRAND that everyone says you have to have may not be right for you.

    Good timing - today I re-DWR’d (that’s a word!) my non-waterproof riding gear for my upcoming week long TET trip. Did you know non-waterproof gear could be very water resistant with a generous amount of DWR?

      Thanks for saying so. Some years ago, a rider asked what I thought about half-helmets, as he was parking his Harley for an adventure ride with us in Patagonia. I urged him to get a full-face helmet, and fortunately he complied….as 3 days into the trip, a surprise wind pushed him off the road. Watched him flop through the air like a rag doll in my side mirror, fortunately landing in mostly tall grasses and able to walk away. However, the front chin bar of his helmet was impacted such that, well….had it not been there, I doubt he would ever spoken or chewed food again. Bike was totaled. So glad he wasn’t. RIDE on!

    Thanks. Was actually wondering if my knee padding was too hard. Cause pain at end of each day on the Idaho BDR. You may have nailed my issue. Will have to make sure to watch next ride too see if thats why they hurt.

    Great tips, one suggestion I would make which goes a little against your suggestions is to make compromises if you are doing long distance touring and needing to carry your own gear. For example on my trip from Nepal to Scotland I wore military style boots rather than motorcycle boots simply as I planned to go trekking and site seeing and I did not have the space to carry both. The spare tires and tools took enough space already :)

      Definitely reasons why we may not go with the highest levels of protection .... although such has also attributed (possibly) to some riders' trips ending early. Glad if you didn't need such protection. Thanks for sharing.

      Thanks for saying so. Off the top of my head, no particular brands I’m aware of cater to such dimensions. However, I’m short-legged, and long-torso’d (torso of someone about 6’6”) and XXL Klim Badlands jacket is perfect for me. 38 Regular I think in the matching pants.

      @@RIDEAdventures Thank you Eric. I recently found a custom outfit in BC I'm going to reach out to. In the meantime I've bought some Carhartt stuff and waxed the crap out of it with about 4 coats of sno-seal.
      The cool kids won't let ya stand next to them at lunch break but I figure it's better that nothing until I can get something proper.

    Either carrying too much gear, or not enough. Gear=weight, and having too much extraneous equipment for a "what if", vs not having an essential item, can end a trip.
    Being overweight can also cause damage.
    Know the weather in your riding area, and dress accordingly. Also know what extremes have the possibility of happening(ie.altitude related temps, ice/snow).
    Having the right tires for the terrain and conditions, and having the riding skill to mitigate a tire's shortcomings, if possible/necessary.

    Great post. Hey Eric, I was wondering what your thoughts were on compromising some gear to reduce heat (for ADV riding) - For example, I just started wearing a CE padded Klim tactical jersey instead of my full riding jacket, and opt for slower roads (out to the fire roads) - I feel like being able to keep cool is almost as important being fully protected from a fall - thoughts?

      Good question, but I haven't worn their Tactical Jersey yet, so it's hard to say. Of course overheating is dangerous, but I'd choose skeletal protection over some heat discomfort any day. Good luck and stay upright : )

    For new bikers it's sometimes handy to buy something cheap or second hand or out of the bargain bucket so you can see what factors about it works or annoys. Then you can buy a quality version of it based on a little bit of cheap experience. If your first jacket is mega expensive and you hate it you won't want the cost of buying another.
    I have also found over the years to go big on gloves. If they feel a little bit tight in the shop then they'll be way to tight on the bike and they never stretch like you hope they will. Bigger gloves tend to bed in nicely.
    Also get AND WEAR earplugs. Get them with the chord attaching them together, makes it easy to just reach into a pocket and pull them both out together, saves hours of hunting around and constantly dropping one and going without. I've found that aftermarket gel insoles can work well in boots and have a damping effect if your bike's vibey.

    I've had it happen get my pant leg caught on the bike and fall over because balance of the bike was thrown off for just that

    Very informative and real experiences shared. I see you use adv type helmet but are they good for long rides where wind blow will push our head back and create stress around the neck. To me having off-road I need to travel 500km on highway. Your opinion will help

      Whether it works or not will depend on each rider's speed, motorcycle, windshield, their torso length, riding position, and the type of helmet. Impossible to say for sure what or if it'll work with your combination, but hopefully you can test it out before committing. Hope that helps.

    Good stuff. Timely for me. Planning a trip with my family in the family SUV, me on my 2021 CB500x. Ambitious National Parks trip starting in Arizona, across Death Valley, through the Sierras, up the coast through Oregon and Washington, across to Glacier, down through Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, Utah, and the North Rim.
    I will check out your gear and keep these tips in mind.
    I haven't picked new tires yet, what do you put on your CB500X's for mostly road based, maybe 80/20?
    Comms are also on my mind, a set of Packtalks for everyone will be pricey. What do you use? Do you have a solution for communicating with people in a car?

      Michael, great trip ahead! We're only using the Heidenau K60 Scouts or MotoZ Tractionator GPS's right now (more 50/50 type tires) and nothing right now in the 80/20 category, so pardon not being able to make a suggestion. --- For Comm's, we really don't mess with much other than our walkie-talkie / Sat Phone connection to the support truck. With SO many things going on during a tour, we just never found an huge advantage to using any particular helmet comm systems that may or may not work, given surroundings, etc. If you find a good system, let us know. Have a great trip!

    Have some rubber gloves along for both working on the bike and added warmth if your gloves get soaked!!!!

    Rain boots over top of riding boots. I swing the kickstand down, dismounted and then discovered that the edge of the rain boot was trapped under the kickstand. I ended up lying sideways across the road...

      Yikes, hopefully not too bad. Bikes are heavy to begin with, even worse when crushing a leg. Thanks for sharing.

    Wear some type of glasses or goggles under the face shield because inevitably you’ll flip the shield up while riding and get hit in the eye by a bug or other object

    if my helmet is one size bigger than the one i was supposed to fit properly should i hurry to change it for one my size or is one size up small enough of a difference for me to get away with wearing it for a season or two? so far i don't feel like it bounces out of place while im off roading, only on at highway speeds it lets in a little too much noise and when i look to the sides the push of the wind moves it just a little bit but it self corrects when i look forward again. i measured my head at 61.5 cm so i should fit spot on an XL (61-62cm) but i bought an XXL(63-64cm) before measuring my head because my previous helmet was also an XXL but i did not measured my head either when i got that one, and that time at the shop they only had an M and an XXL when i went to buy it and the medium was way too tight (although mi helmet before that one was also a medium but back when i bought it i was 17 and i got it based on looks alone without even trying it or thinking about the size) but this time maybe i should have considered as a sign of destiny that in the brand and model of helmet i wanted the XXL was harder to find and more expensive than the same helmet in XL, and it was only available in white while the rest of the color schemes were available in XL :v (i know i'm a fool but i'm still just 22 so i have plenty of time left to keep making mistakes and learning from them)

      Wish we could help with fitting, but of course not possible. Too large of a helmet definitely attributes to it being louder inside than a proper fit. Glad you have time on your hands : )

    But I like my leather jacket on an ADV......I know it's a blasphemy, but....
    I've done the unthinkable....Full goretex gear, forgot to close the vents, wondering why I am getting wet and cold :)).....

    How do you lock in your neck brace when wearing a jacket? Do you just wear it loose?

      Yep, just loose. Check at about 0:05 in that video, and you'll see how I'm wearing just before arriving in Ushuaia in the snow.

    Not testing out a new helmet thoroughly before a long trip...especially a brand not used before that may not suit the user's head shape.....
