Hey Big D - Have you worn the Klim Krios and the Scorpion 950/960?? If so, how do noise levels compare between them? My Bell MX9 is a nice entry level helmet but its very noisy. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
One of the hardest things to get people to understand is that features don't matter as much as fit. It doesn't matter how many vents, or a drop down visor, or MIPS, or anything else if the helmet doesn't fit you.
Yes to this. I so wanted a Klim to be in the cool club. It just didn’t fit my head. Or vice versa. Went with an Arai. Much heavier. No transition lenses, but it fit. For your first helmet I recommend shopping local. Don’t try local and buy online. Support your local shops. At least until you figure out what brand fits your head.
Totally agree there. So many helmet reviewers don’t emphasise how important the fit is. One thing recently learnt when buying a new helmet is to have a choice “A” and a choice “B” from two separate manufacturers. I really wanted the Scorpion helmet, as mentioned here, but my head shape didn’t agree with their sizing and shape... felt “pressure points” on the medium, and the large was just a little too big. I seemed to be in between sizes. My second choice was a Nolan N70-2 X, which fitted like a glove. So, when choosing a new helmet, it is important to recognise any pressure points on your head. Don’t let the sales person con you into thinking they’ll ease in time - they won’t.
I actually got my AT-950 three years ago as a snowmobile helmet, which it works pretty good as with the heated visor. When summer came I started wearing it on the road, and it works good at that too. I have zero complaints with the helmet other than the color, it's what the shop had in January in my size! The modular capability is pretty nice. I'm looking forward to seeing some reviews the new AT-960
Hey guys great video. On the note of modular helmets. I suggest to check the release mechanism for the chin bar in terms of safety. A mechanism right in the lowest center of the chin bar etc is easy to catch and open in the event of a fall.
All great recommendations. My only thing to add is get the helmet that fits you the best. Don’t just order a helmet based on reviews. Everyone’s head is different, so at least going to try on helmets and get fitted is the best option. You may find the one you really want based on looks fits horribly, which will ruin your ride. As always, top notch content from Dork!
Just a few months ago, you put out a video about your dropping TH-cam numbers and your need to go back to your basics. I can tell you that, you've been hitting it out of the park since then. Every. Single. Video. Is. A. Home. Run. You're killing it and thank you!!
Bought an MX-9ADVMIPs solely based upon advice I remebered from your old videos. Got it three weeks after a NASTY lowside on my 125cc Chonda dirtbike that knocked me df out and shattered my shoulderblade. I have a Shoei GTAir for my streetbikes, but my dumbass cheapskate brain thought "it's a cheap slow bike, I don't wanna invest much in dirt gear and can't get hurt too badly!" BOY did I learn a hard lesson. Very happy to see the MX9 is still on the list, bought mine like 3 weeks after the crash because i didn't realize how long recovery would be. Can't wait to get back to riding, it'll be 6 months on the 18th. Ride safe y'all, buy good gear✌️🏍
I have the Scorpion AT950 helmet and use it every day. If you ride year round I recommend the winter model (I think it's called Ellwood) with the amber lense. It comes with a chin cover and removable nose cover that prevent fogging on colder days. I believe it's also pin lock ready. Same price as the regular one too. Works down to a whindchill of -2°F and has stood up to some low sides already. Scorpion customer support is also outstanding. They sent a release mechanism for no charge after it wouldn't open after I crashed with it on.
Love the channel dude. Your review’s have helped me make sure I’m not blowing money on gear I don’t need. And when to be cheap and when not to be cheap. I’m picking up my first dual sport this weekend. DR-Z400S. And looking forward to my first summer of riding/moto camping. Because we live in the same area I know your reviewing gear that will work for my conditions. Thanks for helping a noob get out and adventuring.
O’Neal Sierra 2 is what I ride with. ECE certified with awesome features and insanely cheap. It’s also pretty darn comfortable even with my Cardo system in it 👍
One thing to keep in mind on the MX-9 is a lot of folks - including me - find it super uncomfortable when wearing glasses. That is why I went with the 950.
950 is a nightmare with glasses for me. It hurts like hell after a while. Luckily I can ride without wearing them so that's what I do now. No glasses problemn solved lol
Got the exact BELL mx9 adv helmet , Been using the bell mx9 helmets for a few years now, and they good helmets, only Downside is the peaks rattle with wind blast over certain speeds and it could do with a little more front ventilation as in the winter it does steam up a little bit and it's not the quietest helmet, apart from them little issues it's good and I have crash tested one about 2 years ago and it took a big hit and saved my head from a big rock
I went with the HJC DS-X1 for $200 and have no regrets. It’s not my first motorcycle helmet, I’ve owned ECE rated helmets in the past, and this helmet does not lack in quality in any way compared to those other helmets. The only thing I had to do to the HJC is purchase different size cheek pads separately in order to get the helmet to fit properly, but HJC has excellent customer service and getting parts such as internals, and pin lock shields is not a problem. I tried that AFX-FX41 on at the shop when I purchased the HJC, and that helmet seemed really big on my head. Not loose fitting, but just proportionally over sized, like an astronaut helmet. HJC is the only brand that I’m familiar with that’s not ECE rated that I would trust, because the quality is there. Not to say there aren’t others out there, I’m just not familiar with any.
A big plus for a modular like a scorpion or Shuberth is access for ems to your airway without removing the helmet and possibly causing or exasperating a neck injury.
I have the Shark Evo One 2. It’s a modular that flips the chin bar to lock behind the head. It’s a pretty good helmet because it’s normally shaped and you can open the chin bar if you really need the air. I can’t add goggles or use a peak, but if you’re not dealing with roost or branches it can be a good adv option.
Another great, informative video. I picked up an AT950 because I like the modular and that's what Amanda was using at the time. Great helmet, but a little heavy. I also scooped up a MX-9, but not the adventure. Works great on smoking hot days to flow the most air possible. Not sure I need anything new this year for helmets, but I can always be persuaded. 🤷🤓
I realized you are talking about beginner helmets, but I think you may have missed an important fact, making sure it fits you perfectly, especially if you are going to be wearing for hours and days on end. Unfortunately I can only fit into an Arai XD4, and yes I have tried them all as I wanted a KLIM or a modular Scorpion.
One small thing of note on street helmets but suspect it applies to your Scorpion ADV helmet as well. In some cases, the same helmet will hold an ECE rating in Europe and not in the US (Schuberth and Scorpion have both done this in my personal experience). Part of it is the optical quality test for ECE but I also suspect there is a per helmet "tax" for the ECE sticker as well. Regardless, if the same helmet is rated ECE in Europe, I would not stress about it merely carrying a DOT rating in the US.
Followed your link to Rocky Mountain ATV (where I already had an account) and ordered the Bell MX-9 Dalton Adventure version for an amazing closeout price of $190! Can't wait to upgrade from my generic Amazon garbage helmet, which has nearly ruined adventure riding for me due to fogging and lack of comfort.
I just went from a 5 year old Scorpion AT-950 to a Klim Krios Pro. I have a neck injury so I'm hoping the featherweight helmet will take some stress off my noggin.
I've owned 3 AT950s. One I replaced due to the age and the other because I was in an accident. Really great helmet other than being a little loud. My last 2 were true snow mobile type because I wanted the dual pane visor and yellow drop down sun shade. The color way wasn't bad either.
Thank you for such awesome videos with so much information and considerate to beginners. I am just getting into dual sport and love your channel so far. From the clips of you riding it looked to me that you are in the PNW area. Im from the area and it is beautiful.
Thank you Ben another well thought out complete review for us regular folks. I've got a fly trekker and a sedici viaggio parlare witch both have been good to me.
The Scorpion EXO AT960 has been out in the US since early January. It is very similar to the 950, but I feel that it's made of slightly better material. If your head is longer than round, you MAY have an issue with forehead pressure. I had this same issue with the 950. My 960 might not be fully broken in yet but the only part that is slightly uncomfortable initially is the forehead area, so you MIGHT want to get a size larger. I was disappointed that I don't have must space around my chin. I removed the chin flap to get more air. A pinlock shield and pinlock are not available now, but two venders are pretty sure that they will come in "the spring." The Scorpion ADX-2 is the European version of the 960, so a pinlock MAY fit and be available. Check to see if that's right. S
@@Jrekt I'm right between 62 and 63cm. Most of my helmets are XL. This 960 I bought is an XXL. Everything feels right except that I still haven't worn it for a whole day. I might still have an issue with the forehead, but if I do it's a very slight extra pressure that should or could work itself out. Again, it your head is slightly more than _intermediate oval,_ you might go XL. The more I think of it I'd hazard to say go with the XL at 59cm. Best of luck. S
Great overview. I have the “anti-Adv” helmet despite being off-road 50%…noise is my enemy so Schuberth C3 Pro. Doesn’t match my KTM but it’s super quiet and the internal sun visor is great
Don't feel like your doing anything wrong for using flipup or full face. Adv helmets are mostly overpriced gimmick sold to older rich dudes who have to have everything "adv" without even understanding why. Most of them don't vent better than good road helmets and often are even heavier which is insane! I'm getting rpha 90 or neotec2 and I'll be offroading the snot of out them. Also fighting with noise by helmet is stupid, always use earplugs if u ride longer than half hour. I also was obsessed with noise in the past, it's nonsense quietest helmet won't given you even 10% of what plugs do, it's game changer and makes riding 10x more fun and less fatiguing
This involves a criticism, but it helps the algorithm so whatever. GREAT video, the kind that's actually useful and not just a wish list. I only wish you'd talked about glasses compatibility. Some helmets are bad for that. It's why I didn't buy the Bell when I started out. Ryan mentioned the trick of putting rubber bands on the cheek pads to make a groove for the temple, but I saw that late. Overall, of course, great and useful video.
I'm questioning the need for an ADV helmet altogether. Is it really so bad to wear a street helmet when off-roading? I consciously picked a street helmet with good peripheral vision and a built-in sun visor, so that's covered. I think I will stick with my HJC C70 helmet for now and see how that goes...
As he stated in the vid the peak visor helps deflect limbs and it helps a ton with glare when your visor is coated with dust. The chin bars are longer which gives space in front of your mouth to accommodate heavier breathing. The chin bar length along with the larger visor openings accommodate goggles. They flow more air at low speeds. There’s alot of benefit to an adventure helmet but it really comes down to how much off pavement riding you do
Great video!!! I own a Scorpion 950, (I love the modular feature). I want a second helmet, and I was wondering If there's any carbon fiber modular ADV helmet? I wasn't able to find one. I would love a modular Scorpion 9000. That would be Awesome! Any tip?, any brand or model?
I've got the scorpion at-950, my only complaint is the size of the shell. It makes me look like a bobble head riding down the road. I usually wear a large shell but I had to go up to the XL from Scorpion and it looks GIGANTIC. Otherwise its been a great helmet. The peak unfortunately is not easy to remove. It requires a lot of fumbling about and you have to have a tool.
Just to note, the AT960 is 100 grams heavier than the AT950 according to Scorpions website. (1780g vs 1858g, size medium) Not that you could probably feel the difference, but when it is already on the heavier end of adv helmets, being a modular, more weight isn't welcome.
This will be a great video series! Very helpful for newcombers and seasoned adv riders alike. I can attest to the Fly Adventure, it was my first Helmet and it was great for it’s price point. I presently wear the arai XD4 and I’ll likely never go to anything else. For me, it’s that darn comfortable! It is spendy tho. I really liked this video, cuz I was in it 😂😂
One note about the AT950: it's ECE rated in the EU, but only DOT in the US. While I highly doubt that they make the US helmets in a different factory, and therefore it's likely the same helmet (and hence actually ECE rated), it technically isn't. I love my AT950, and given the fact that it's ECE in Europe (where ECE is required), I'm happy with it.
Most ADV helmets I have tried on the peak is so high it does NOTHING. The only exception so far is the Arai, you can actually tilt your head low enough to block sun, branches etc.
I've been rocking the AT-950 for 4 or 5 seasons. Love it. They do have a heated visor as well as a double-walled one so pinlock isn't necessary. Didn't stop me from getting a pinlock and then forgetting to take it out when I was on a dusty tail. Scratched. To. Pieces. This series is a fantastic idea! There's no shortage of product videos out there but sharing your experience is something that would have benefited me when I started riding. Will you talk about body protection (insert bedroom scene from Naked Gun)? I've got full D30 in my riding jacket and pants but on those warmer and drier days in southwest BC it's too much. But I still want the slide protection in case I go down on the way to the trail. What's your solution for protection and comfort in a dual sport ride?
You have to compromise somewhere. On super hot days I've been wearing my Klim Tactical Pro jersey over armor. it's got SOME slide protection but isn't as good a jacket, so I try to only wear it on days where the highway riding is minimal or it's just too damn hot to wear anything else.
Coulda sworn I posted a comment 🤔 anyway, great series! Wdyt about the LS2 adv line? Blaze Sprint and others, they have some good price point with pin lock / ece / dot. Blaze Sprint was my first and honestly really liked it before getting the moolah for an arai.
My wife just purchased the Shoei Hornet X2, she wears an XS. Some (or most) brands have few shell sizes so when you get down to the XS the shell is huge, something to consider when looking at helmets is the shell size relative to your head size, and how different brands you are considering compare. Dork love your videos!
I'm on the opposite end and wear an XL Arai, biggest size they do in the biggest shell - there's barely 1mm of padding in the liner, my head isn't far off being encased in the EPS! Best fit I've had in a helmet tbh, but I am envious of the smaller end of the market where you get great clearance discounts and loads of padding.
The fit of a helmet is much more important than the features they have. I’d recommend trying a few different manufacturers helmets, rather than going for one particular brand. They all fit differently, and everyone’s head shape is different - fact.
Finally chose and bought a bike for my old bod. So now I finally have a bike again and it's being delivered soon (2023 CRF300L). Wanted something easy so I, hopefully don't crash and burn. Now I need a helmet! So what do you feel is best and what are you currently wearing? I am an old, 68, returning rider after many years.
If you're just getting back into it and don't want to break the bank the Bell MX-9 Adventure is what I'd go with. Currently wearing a Shoei Hornet but haven't decided how much I like it yet. Not enough seat time.
@@DorkintheRoad I know there is dust and possible rain and stuff to deal with. But what I hear you saying is you would probably go with an ADV helmet over the Motocross/dirt style helmets? This is a key deciding point for me. On the Shoei, read a review that says it's a bit warmer than the Arai XD4, ventilation not as good. Did you try the XD4(Itchy Boots wears)? I tried on some Shoei(Evo) and, not the Hornet as they didn't have it, and the Shoei are very comfortable so I will say that.
Timely topic for me. Getting ready to pull the trigger on a helmet to replace my 17 year old HJC. Yeah, I've waited waaay to long to update my noggin' protection. Somebody told me once after 5 years the foam protection loses its integrity. Didn't think I'd need a peak until I saw you take a branch to the head on the peak in the last video. Rethinking that now.
I just don’t get these adventure helmets… That beak is super annoying on the road and usually unnecessary to deflect roost off road due to our tall wind deflector missing on true dirt bikes. A good modular (flip up) helmet is the best of both worlds IMHO. Cheers 🍻🍻
SORRY to BOTHER You with this petty question Ben. As a Viewer of LiveStreams, I do not fully understand how a Host asking your side chat members if they want to type there Username works to find their Channel. Their Username is already listed, right.? While there TH-cam Handle is unsearchable, correct.? I often cannot find channels to side chat members if their Username is too common. Wouldn't asking them to type a TITLE of one of their video be more effective.? I need to watch one of your LiveStreams to see your method.
You’re missing the best one though. Tried all of these and they pale in comparison to the XD4 when it comes to noise levels, aerodynamics and build quality.
damn right, i went from a at950 to my xd4 and was astounded by the lightness, less wind noise, and hell of a ton more airflow, and way more peak for blocking that annoying sunrise sunset and comfort level is out of this world nice
@@spongeaus even thought the Krios Pro is a lighter helmet it’s aerodynamics are so bad and shell is so large it feels heavier than the XD4 while riding.
I didn't think one of the most expensive helmets on the market made sense for a beginner helmet video (aside from a passing mention of the Krios Pro), but I agree the XD4 and the Shoei Hornet are top notch options.
Hey Ben, just circling back to this video as I am now in the market for a new helmet. Did you end up getting the XT-9000 and if so, what are your thoughts on it? Is it as good as what the reviews say it is?
May I ask what size you wear with the Klim helmet (and if that’s not too indescrete to ask your head circumference)? I habe no Klim dealers near where I live and I know its not a good idea to buy a helmet without wearing it first but id like to try a krios. Now my head size is right in the middle of where Klims sizing chart decides to go with the smaller or bigger shell size. What should I do?
I personally hate my AT960, love my 950 after 30 or 40k miles. The 960 carries it's weight weird, the sun visor doesn't work as well, etc. The 960 is not an upgrade.
Thanks so much for this video and all the others, I've been looking at a second lid for some time now for more adv riding and I think I'm getting the 9000 carbon as well. I already have a modular helmet so it'll be nice to have something light to go with it.
I purchased a helmet for school prior to knowing what bike I'd get lol.. So now I'm on a T-7 with a street bike, HJC helmet and it bothers me a bit.. I know.. I know.. it shouldn't and "it's just a helmet style"... I have no intentions of getting out deep in the rough anytime soon but, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to buy an ADV helmet...😅 I've held off the urge for now because well.... I have a helmet already but soon....Soon...
Hi, If you’d be choosing now, would it be the bell or scorpion - I found them at very similar pricing :) would be using it more offroad, but also have the helmet if I would go on longer trips on the highway :)
@@DorkintheRoad the thing I want to have is the ability to wear goggles off road with the least hastle :D but I am am also affraid that the scorpion might get quite hot in the woods :D
I don't recommend the AFX have been using it over a year and very cheap! Poor idea's the tint visor broke right away, the clear visor can't see through the rim seal edge, very loud!!
Anyone know of a premium adv helmet with a snow kit? I use the mx9 mips adv in the winter for riding but it's getting a little old. Wish the hornet/XD4/krios came with an electric shield but I suppose I'll keep dreaming.
It’s a general rule of thumb, but there are other factors involved. Mostly it depends on how it was treated…dropped alot…taken impacts….stored out in a garage in hot climates or inside a conditioned space…. How many actual miles worn…etc. most just replace it to keep things simple
Mine is 5 yrs but got hit by a rock just above my ear, it came from a roadside mower. It penetrate half of the thickness of the helmet so I will have to replace it.

You're my best internet friend. Thanks for the great video (as always)
I have the 41 and it's great
The 101 is good. Keep them coming.
I just bought a Scorpion AT950 "snow" on sale for sledding and am looking for a pair of googles that fit for the DR in summer.
Thanks Dork! Great content. I'm looking for an upgrade to my MX9 - mainly because of the noise factor.

Did you buy the true size or size up? My heads like 59cm but some comments say the at950 runs small. Is the 960 in the same boat? Should I go XL?
@@Jrekt I'm right between 62 and 63cm. Most of my helmets are XL. This 960 I bought is an XXL. Everything feels right except that I still haven't worn it for a whole day. I might still have an issue with the forehead, but if I do it's a very slight extra pressure that should or could work itself out. Again, it your head is slightly more than _intermediate oval,_ you might go XL. The more I think of it I'd hazard to say go with the XL at 59cm.
Best of luck.

Love your videos and channel. Good straight forward content and smooth delivery. Please turn down the music it’s a little much. Keep up the good work!
Same here
As he stated in the vid the peak visor helps deflect limbs and it helps a ton with glare when your visor is coated with dust.
I really liked this video, cuz I was in it 😂😂
Thanks for the recommendations!
Love my Shoei Hornet x2, wish it was modular though !
What is the best dual sport helmet for someone who must wear glasses ? Any price range.
Excellent review! Packed with great information and concise too! 👊
Wondering what system people are using for helmet speakers to listen to music? Cardo, Sena, Rockr?
Well, just purchased my first adv helmet about an hour before I saw this…lol…got the Arai XD4
I like your videos, you’re very real world, but he still cover everything
Good one Dork 👍 thanks 🙏
First of all, what is the name of the klim helmet on the left? What color is it? please tell me. thank you
Which are best with glasses?
I’ve been using the Klim Krios Pro for a while, and I really like it. Super light weight and fits my Sputnik sized cranium really well.
I’m a BELL helmet guy been wearing them since 1969
Timely topic for me.
My pain is your gain!
I just don’t get these adventure helmets…
That beak is super annoying on the road and usually unnecessary to deflect roost off road due to our tall wind deflector missing on true dirt bikes.
A good modular (flip up) helmet is the best of both worlds IMHO.
Cheers
🍻🍻
I've never heard a helmet's visor called a "peak"(pique?) before today 😅
SORRY to BOTHER You with this petty question Ben. As a Viewer of LiveStreams, I do not fully understand how a Host asking your side chat members if they want to type there Username works to find their Channel. Their Username is already listed, right.? While there TH-cam Handle is unsearchable, correct.? I often cannot find channels to side chat members if their Username is too common. Wouldn't asking them to type a TITLE of one of their video be more effective.? I need to watch one of your LiveStreams to see your method.
👍 Great stuff Ben. Thx for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Do you know what updates they are making to 960 from the 950?
You’re missing the best one though. Tried all of these and they pale in comparison to the XD4 when it comes to noise levels, aerodynamics and build quality.
damn right, i went from a at950 to my xd4 and was astounded by the lightness, less wind noise, and hell of a ton more airflow, and way more peak for blocking that annoying sunrise sunset and comfort level is out of this world nice
@@spongeaus even thought the Krios Pro is a lighter helmet it’s aerodynamics are so bad and shell is so large it feels heavier than the XD4 while riding.
I think that is the difference between a $300 helmet and a $800 helmet. But Yeah...
I didn't think one of the most expensive helmets on the market made sense for a beginner helmet video (aside from a passing mention of the Krios Pro), but I agree the XD4 and the Shoei Hornet are top notch options.
@apiazza63 the Krios is only 2 shells, so unless you're a medium or a xxxl you're in the wrong shell size for your head.
Hey Ben, just circling back to this video as I am now in the market for a new helmet. Did you end up getting the XT-9000 and if so, what are your thoughts on it? Is it as good as what the reviews say it is?
Sadly scorpion never ended up sending one.
@@DorkintheRoad That's a bugger!
Rocks that are spit out from bus and truck tires are very fast. Are all goggles impact rated?
Thank you.
I have no intentions of getting out deep in the rough anytime soon but, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to buy an ADV helmet...😅
I've held off the urge for now because well.... I have a helmet already but soon....Soon...
I started with 2 HJC CL-17s. Good helmets but they didn't fit my head very well.
Hi, If you’d be choosing now, would it be the bell or scorpion - I found them at very similar pricing :) would be using it more offroad, but also have the helmet if I would go on longer trips on the highway :)
That depends entirely on whether or not you want a modular helmet
@@DorkintheRoad the thing I want to have is the ability to wear goggles off road with the least hastle :D but I am am also affraid that the scorpion might get quite hot in the woods :D
Tks Ben, I have the AT950 and I’m very happy with it. Is it compatible with googles?
Yes
Yup works great with goggles.
@@DorkintheRoad tks boss. TH-cam views are in progress ?
But with googles, no more sun shade I imagine.
Scorpion AT950 is also a snowmobile helmet so they have a ton of snow accessories up to and including a headed visor.
Rad!
👍🍻
A helmet only lasts five years?
How come? I had no idea.
The EPS foam dries out and becomes brittle, therefore not compressing as well in an accident.
@@DorkintheRoad Aha, that goes for all helmets?
It’s a general rule of thumb, but there are other factors involved. Mostly it depends on how it was treated…dropped alot…taken impacts….stored out in a garage in hot climates or inside a conditioned space…. How many actual miles worn…etc. most just replace it to keep things simple
SNELL sucks too
So y’all only keep your helmets 5 years.? 🤔🤭🤫
Wondering about that myself.
Mine is 5 yrs but got hit by a rock just above my ear, it came from a roadside mower. It penetrate half of the thickness of the helmet so I will have to replace it.
Then Scorpion is a total piece of junk. Better wear hearing protection.
The lens lens distorts everything
I love my scorpion AT950… I wear glasses sometimes and it’s the best for that.
Love the comfort of my Arai and the MX9 Adventure is a bargain but heavier. Fit is everything so try before you buy. @jrdepew
