Superb video, I wish I saw it before I geared up, I love the idea of having the armoured top - it makes so much sense by giving you very full support while adding versatility to what you wear with it and thus saving some (maybe 😉)

Brad, glad if the info helps, thanks for commenting. One bit I forgot to mention, but is perhaps obvious.....would be that this is of course one of the most expensive ways to get set up. Folks will figure, but then again, the entire get-up costs less than the bod. Probably less than any trip to a hospital. RIDE on!

Great video. For hydration I am running the Scorpion EXO Tactical vest. I distributes the weight and has great pockets and moly system to allow me to chose my load out. Also a rather large backpack, though i don’t use it. Might be a good spot to put an extra layer or rain gear, but surely dont want anything in there that could break or stab me in the back if I ever went down.

Thanks so much, Eric! I've been riding cruisers for three years now, and I just purchased my first adventure bike. It's crazy how the two riding styles require completely different gear! One of the items I was lamenting giving up for off-roading is my Alpinestars Tech-Air 5 System (airbag). Prior to watching your video, body armor jackets and separate knee protection were not on my radar. Well they are now, and I should be receiving both items within 48 hours! Thanks for the compliment. Especially in parts of the world where....finding a suitable glove in one's size is next to impossible....that 2nd or 3rd pair is nice to have.
Very good video. You have me considering removing the padding from my regular jacket and pants and going with the skeleton type. Using that on the top is particularly appealing as you can remove the outer shell and still have some degree of protection with the skeleton shirt when it gets blistering hot. Thanks for the post.
Glad if the info or thoughts help. Give it a try, and let us know how it goes. Failed to mention (but perhaps obvious) in the video that the extra/separate padding adds 5-10 minutes of dress-up/down time each day, but hardly an issue, once a routine is established.
Ever since I got into off-road riding, I've used a skeleton suit with a jersey or jacket over it. Once on, you never really notice it.

Great video, guys. Super informative and easy-to-understand information for a newbie rider such as myself. (Passed my test in October last year, bought my first bike a couple of weeks later). I ride a Royal Enfield Himalayan and want to start doing some adventure riding this year if I can. I know I have lots to learn but now I've found this page I think you guys will help to make that learning process a whole lot easier. Thanks for sharing your knowledge :-)

When people ask me about my brace, I just tell them I like to bring my own toilet seat along on trips.
Upside-down it looks just like a little kids toilet seat...

All these years......SO many times I've been asked "what is that?" and I never thought to give such a straight-faced response: "The truth is, ma'am, when we travel in certain parts of the world, Toilet Seats are never installed in some bathrooms because of theft reasons. Spot on! Totally agree re: protection, esp. knees. I want to add a 'hot only' kit where I have a much more vented pant and jacket, with a lighter waterproof over later, for areas like central cal desert where I don't want it as hot, wet is a rare chance, and if I do get wet it won't hurt that much
Adam, thanks for the note. Yea, there are some great hot-weather-only jackets and pants out there that make the insulation feel about the equivalent of just riding with an armor jacket and/or jersey. But as mentioned, on Patagonia trips and some others, we can see Freezing/0C temps, up to hot and sunny, so "one set up, to rule them all" sometimes is important. So, I guess it's up to the individual what they need : )

You just confirmed my recent purchases, the Badlands pants and jacket, as well as a collar brace and good riding boots. You get what you pay for, and health and safety are priceless.
Well put, and yea.....this is one of the most expensive get-ups possible, but still far less expensive than even the shortest hospital trips. Not that it makes us invincible, but it sure takes care of some of the smaller mistakes. Stay comfortable, and RIDE on!

Great stuff...Only comment - being paid to tour allows for purchase of the MOST expensive gear on the market....lots of us can only dream of Klim top of the line, expensive coats and pants. But you prove that they actually work. I would be interested in finding out what the full setup costs. And a follow up on gear that works, but more budget oriented.
Mike, yep, the pricing wasn't mentioned but can easily be checked using the links below in the description. Definitely a "higher-end" gear set-up, but one that still costs less than just about any injury. (And not that this guarantees injury-avoidance, but ..... ) Thanks for commenting, and yes, we'll be addressing more riding gear subjects in upcoming videos.
Mike: I can't say I have the money to buy the best of everything either. But....I have learned that if you buy quality stuff that may cost more up front, it is worth it just by how it will last. That is evident by how long he has had some of his gear. Treat yourself you're worth it. Fewer things of better quality are the way to go in life.
@@stanm2.0 I work in audio/video/staging....I learned a LONG time ago that you get what you pay for, and in critical applications, saving money costs. But there also has to be a balance....$2500 for a jacket...there are great jackets that cost less....and that money say a savings of $1000 pays for a lot of gas and a lot of miles. I am embarking on an RTW trip in 2022 and I have to outfit myself from naked to full riding gear. One thing I do to save $$ is search used gear....I've found Klim Badlands Pro selling used for $950 - a HUGE savings....but I'll tell you, it gets confusing listening to, reading, and researching the number of options out there. I'll do my best, but there is a learning curve. And I do plan on getting quality....cause I get it. But new/used as much as possible. And trying the find gear for ALL conditions is daunting. I want to be warm when needed and cool when needed....I'm getting there with the layers and what materials are available and their qualities. So achieving a balance, being informed, knowledgeable to the best extent possible still does not mean that my decisions will work out there on the road. And the key is to get out there and ride....I have a year and a half left to get ready....The bike will be here in 2 weeks....I'm selling my business, and all possessions, and will get the best gear I can, that makes sense. And I'll make some mistakes. But I'll be out there. I appreciate the comments.
@@mikekay6789 ....Good points. There is always room for compromise. I'll be touring around myself in 2021,22,23,24,25.....you get the idea. I'll have to trade itineraries/routes, maybe they will match up and we'll meet up/cross paths.

Great video, you may want to try out the Mosko Moto tank bag for a camel pack as opposed to the loose backpack. Respect that you always ride with a neck brace and do your own thing instead of what everyone else does.

Excellent video and topic. Very interesting to see your setup. As I need to buy a complete setup for my world trip, this is a topic I am closely following online. It seems US & Aussie are mainly Klim territories and EU is more Revit. I mostly see Klim Badlands or Revit Dominator on people that can afford them. Your boots held 8 years, wow. Never had Knee & Pelvic Protection, do you wear them on all types of trails or just serious off-road? Great advice on sweat cap :) and lowering the hydration backpack, up until now I was against having anything on my back. I will test it. Do you use heated grips? Some ATW Riders say it’s a must have. I was recently told that they reverse the effect of gore-tex gloves, so you need to wear normal gloves. What is your experience with gloves in cold or rainy weather? After Fortnine, this channel is becoming a favorite. Keep up the good work!
Restless Soul, congrats on having round the world trip plans : ) ----- Because pretty much all the riding we do is dual sport, yea, this 1 setup is what I use for every trip. I believe with the hard plastic shells, I've got superior impact protection (over original included padding) and I subscribe to "the more, the better" philosophy with regards to staying protected. ---- I failed to mention in the video: I've actually felt the kneepads taking some of the bike's weight off of my knee when the bike is on my leg. I've also felt the back of the Neck Brace push on my helmet when a rider hit me from behind. In no such case can I say for sure I would have been "worse off" without these protection pieces, but it sure felt good knowing they were there. -------- Yep, most bikes have heated grips, and once the cuff is around the glove, these Gore-Tex options do the trick to stay dry. Thank you for sharing your experience and insight with us. I geared up like you do for my motorcycle training course last weekend. I crashed on day 2 and walked away with only a little forearm scrape because I spent money on quality protective gear. Thanks helping me stay safe as I learn how to ride!!

@@kee7678 Total was around $1,000-1,200. That's helmet, boots, 2 pair of gloves, jacket, pants, motocross armor top, knee pads, socks, and a couple jerseys. I might have been able to save money by ordering all of it online but I was glad I shopped in person at a store because the salesman gave me helpful advice and made sure the gear fit properly. If you can’t buy the expensive gear for all weather you can get regular rain gear to go over top.
For your hands you can get XL dishwashing gloves to go over top of your riding gloves. However if your on the larger side this probably won’t work but works for me.

Great video... very informative. I am taking a similar approach to protective gear. One part of your system that did not work for me is the Klim Badlands Pro jacket. That jacket never worked for me in either standard use with it's armor in place, or with our armor out and worn over a protection as you demonstrate.... the two problems I had with that jacket were the ridiculously tight sleeves especially in the firearm area...no room for any layering underneath....an no I do not have Popeye arms and do not work out !!....2nd problem is that it's much too heavy and restrictive....so for now I just use a light goretex rain shell if it rains, but plan to get one of Mosko Moto's shell jackets next year.
Carl, interesting about the sleeves. Wonder if Klim has gotten such feedback over the years. --- I didn't mention in the video so much, but I actually appreciate how thick/heavy/durable the Badlands feels. It's like confidence-boosting, and feels super protective. Like wearing an over-cooked steak on my chest. -- But yea, the other method we'll cover in another video is to just use whatever basic/comfortable gear a rider has, and make the waterproofing some extra layer/shell to put on. Putting it on the outside, sure does beat taking everything off to add that inner-layer. --- Thanks for sharing and the compliment. - Eric
Thank you! I thought I was the only one who hated the internal knee protector pockets in pants. They always push my D3O pads to the inside of my knee while in the seated position. But the top and the outside of my knees are most likely to get injured in an accident. I'm definitely going to invest in some dedicated knee armor.
As for the body armor, it seems like you are giving up some abrasion resistance when wearing the body armor with just a jersey instead of a jacket. How about something like the Knox Urbane Pro MK2 Shirt? It costs about the same, functions in much the same way except for chest armor, and has AA rated abrasion resistance built in.
Never saw the Knox before, but yea, perhaps a solid 'option in the middle.' Definitely taking on some skin abrasion risks by riding with only armor and no jacket, but as I think was mentioned, at least the skeleton and some of the main contact skin points are protected. Only for extremely hot situations. Thanks for commenting.
I know many of the guys/gals I ride with either purchase superseded Klim gear or purchase second hand. It is sometimes half the cost and is then affordable. Have never personally used a neck brace as I have a solid neck and it is hard for me to turn my head. Keep up the great production.

Great vid, but just a safety note on your tip about low slung backpacks.
I used to do that (looser straps so bag sits on bike seat) but then I had a moment when my backpack tie down straps (on back of bag) hooked around the bikes tie down hooks.(on tenere700)
This happened while moving around dealing with some slippy mud. And suddenly I was being pulled back down and right away from my left handlebar. So I couldn’t straighten bars or get weight forward.
Luckily I was going slow at the time so no real accident/injury. But if that happened halfway up/down a climb I would have been screwed.
So now I still wear a backpack but I keep it tight to my body.
Yes, EXCELLENT point that should/will be addressed in other videos. One of my original riding setups involved some hooks that caught me a couple of times, too. Never in a hot moment like your mud situation, but just a couple of times was enough to make sure that no such hooks/catches would ever be an issue again. Nothing can catch on my straps now the way I pack. Thanks for reminding us.

Chain.Driven, thanks for saying so. There isn't really a 'secret,' instead just a bunch of hope that I get each section right the first time. If not, falling-back on Garrett's ability to re-take, edit-out, and just make it work. Definitely some scripting work going on, but mostly just as an outline of bulletpoints. Easy stuff to talk about, when in this case, I've suited-up this many times. --- Thanks for watching and the great feedback. Considering your philosophy regarding pants that have goretex built in I will suggest taking a look at the Alpinestars Tech 7 DRY, Aand also maybe replace the good but heavy Klim Badlands jacket with the more light but durable and hooded Adventure Spec Singletrack Jacket, that way you may not need the neck gaiter anymore.

Great tutorial! Looks like I was right when I thought that my brain cap and leather jacket which I ride at my heavy cruiser would not work at 890 KTM)

I do have a question though that I am struggling to figure out... I am a size small motorcycle jacket usually. Do you think a size medium jacket will be big enough to accommodate the armour? Thanks for saying so, and glad if the info helps. --- Yes, probably sizing-up by 1 size will be necessary to fit a protection jacket like the one in the video. Sorta depends on the padding though.....so don't let this decision to get the right size wait until you're headed out on your next adventure ride : )
Thanks for this video - very informative and helps reinforce an approach my wife and I have just taken with respect to body armor despite that we don't currently off-road. Although not perfect for added abrasion resistance the concept of wearing a body armor jacket especially here in Texas with the heat we get thru 75% of the year and NOT wearing a heavy over jacket is very appealing and of course there's the added benefit that the armor is held in-place for most effective protection in the event of a tumble. My Q to you is more related to the heated jacket and the cooling water evap vest, I presume for max effect either would have to go under the armor jacket but this does tend to add bulk since the armor jacket to be effective has to be 'a good fit'. Do you have any comments you'd like to make regarding this?

Good question, one I should have explained better: Yes, ultimately, the heating/cooling vests work best the closer they are to our skin, and especially the cooling vest.....which needs airflow in order to function and evaporate/cool. So, they don't really work well beneath the armor jackets, and particularly a full cooling vest, is annoyingly bulky when wedged beneath an otherwise snug-fitting armor jacket. ---- I remember that Texas heat, and understand the desire for a cooling vest (lived in Austin years ago : ) Tough to ride without armor, but in a brutal heat situation, that Macna Evo Cooling Vest is incredibly effective, if the air is flowing around it at least some. RIDE on!
This is a really good video, opened my mind up for a new way of dealing with protection/weather. I was wondering about choice of color black for road gear ever gets to hot to wear? and also about the bionic tech shirt if you could say if you had any bigger slides while wearing this shirt and if it held up?
Nice setup, I’ve picked a few helpful tips. The flexibility is impressive but requires a support vehicle to carry all the extra stuff. The clips show you don’t use panniers or have any gear strapped to the bike. Most of us travel unsupported and must dress accordingly.
Actually, I'm wearing almost all of this stuff while riding, but the extra gloves/layers, etc. fit easily into any combination of panniers or soft luggage, along with the regular clothes. Thanks for the note, glad if the info helps.

Thanks for the kind comment. I've never used any of these airbags yet, and actually don't know anyone who rides with one. Are they a viable option? One of those things that, like a neck brace, I sure hope I never have to find out if they work :)
I like that helmet Been using the standard moto x helmet with goggles but want to switch to a more adventure helmet
Especially for long distance rides that involve higher average speeds....yea, the noise reduction alone is worth it.
I still got hair, and never put on a helmet without a beanie. Helps keeping the helmet clean. Buy the way i Love the MACNA Dry Evo is amazing. Here in Portugal during summer we have up to 40 celsius and that vest helps refreshing me, guys it really works!.
What I forgot to mention in the video (although perhaps the name implies it) is that yea, that Macna Dry Evo is so great, because it doesn't require us to feel "soaked" and sopping wet all day. Some other "cooling vests" on the market are just a matter of drenching the vest in water. Dry AND cool, glad you know about it! Thanks for sharing (and congrats on having hair : ) ---- Eric
@@RIDEAdventures Yep. One of the major diferences to all other vests out there, they have to be wet, so you also get wet.

The head sweat cap is the one I need. But I’ve been using paper towels. The helmet liner can get pretty nasty without it.

Excellent video, thanks for passing on all your gear experience. Are Klim pants and Klim jackets really worth the $$? Pretty expensive in Australia. I carry a thin Goretex jacket and thin Goretex over-pants instead. This is a much cheaper option, but as you say, not quite as convenient as wearing one bit of gear for all weather conditions. Cheers
Gloss Black, of course it's hard for someone else to say "if they're worth the $$$," as that means different things to different people. But yea, your strategy of carrying an over-layer is the next-best strategy that we'll address in upcoming videos. The inner-layer waterproofing......ugh, can be so cumbersome, but slipping on an outer shell is much less of a project, and yes, can be considerably less-expensive. Thanks for commenting.
RIDE Adventures, thanks for the feedback. The Goretex Over layer works ok for me, as I’m only riding 2 or 3 days a month, mainly fine weather, but you ride a lot more in extreme conditions so need the best gear you can get. Cheers
Just to add on to the boot aspect, there's excellent silk screen socks (many designed for knee braces and knee cups too, which are slim and light but worth their weight in gold) a trials boot like the forma, sidi, and alpinestar "boulder/oiled/trial/trail" boots offer good protection with optimal comfort.
Nothing will come close to a Fox Comp R/Instincts or A-stars Tech 7/8/10 but they're great upper-middle option without the weight.

I've been trying to use a hydration pack while riding, but I'm unable to get the mouthpiece inside the helmet on the move. I've got a Nexx XD1 helmet which looks similar to your Shoei. Got any tips?
Luc, good questions. The Hydration: Probably because I treat that backpack like a man purse, so it's always by my side, which means I always have water with me then, too. I don't always have a want or need to have my jacket with me (like at the end of the riding day) so having it in my backpack just works better for me. ----- The Mouthpiece: Hmm, do you have chin/wind deflectors or something blocking the mouthpiece from being reachable? If not, guessing it's just a matter of how spacious Nexx made that helmet vs. the Shoei and others, around the chin area. All helmets do tend to be different, and so maybe try on a Shoei sometime and see if it gives you more room. Letting us know on this thread would be appreciated.
