- WRITE BOOKS READERS LOVE: Nobody owes you a living, and you shouldn't be begging for support: if you want to make a living as a writer, you MUST provide value in equal measure to the amount of income you desire. It's easier to do this on purpose, by appreciating and respecting your audience enough to care about giving them an excellent reading experience.
Writing great books is a learnable skill, but only if you choose to improve your craft. You can write books YOU love, or you can write books you love that readers ALSO love. The difference is in choosing to provide value to one person, or many people. Obviously, your income will be directly proportional to how much value you're producing.

Ha, did I say that? I meant you need to learn how to satisfy writers. I usually stay away from "best" or "good" because I'm talking about story, and most people are talking about writing.

Thanks for another helpful video. This one certainly coalesces all of your thoughts in previous videos to be more succinct. I've written a 205k word New Adult Fantasy Novel, that I believe is for the market. It has all the tropes of the genre, while adding my own witty ideas.
However, while I was busy writing this novel for a year, and then another year for editing and planning the release (August 10th), I could have been writing another novel that I believe was FAR MORE to market than this one.
Every person I've talked to about my Fantasy novel, after hearing the description, are somewhat interested. But when I tell them the idea for a Dystopian Thriller Sci-Fi novel, they literally (not literally) flip their lids.
My fantasy is about how a drunken wizard accidentally curses a kingdom's forest, and a group of misfit adventurers must learn to settle their differences and defeat an ancient evil monster the curse has awoken. Seems neat, right?
My dystopian novel is about how the government scoops out your eyeballs at birth and controls everything you see; that you live in a nice house, but really it's a shack (etc.). People I tell it to say, "Omg, sounds like what it is now!!!"
I, however, tried to write that novel, but I cannot for the life of me get past the first chapter. It's far too dark. My fantasy novel, and it's now WIP sequel, just flies off the pages, because it is light hearted, though dark at times, and has a bit of humor in it to get past the tough parts.
I feel that there is something to be said of novels that are totally for market, but cannot be written.
Thanks - that's my goal, I'm trying to get better at having one clear message. The dark dystopia sounds more my type of thing. :) I would do what feels comfortable, at least for now, until you have more experience. That said... it's easy to do what's fun and comfortable - but if readers don't love it, you're just writing for yourself. If you decide to write books to market, it won't be easy at first - that doesn't mean it's not quality or that you can't do it. It just means you need to learn and practice to develop the skillset (I don't think you should write anything you hate, but there's probably a way to tell your idea in a way that fits your style).

The reason the dystopian novel flip their lids is because it's super scary and within the realm of possibility. We're already being recorded, so taking that idea a step further with the eyeballs so we "see" what the government wants us to see is a dark possibility. I think stuff like that resonates with a lot of people.
Where can I go to be in peace and begin writing my second book?
Where do authors go to learn more about story craft? How do we know when we've found a reputable teacher? Is it a college degree in English and literature? What is the best way to learn how to piece together a readable story?

Creative ideas are not magic there is very hard work to do. Most writers lose money so do resarch such as value books from the reviews from the beginning. If there are ten years of papers for a book the content is there already. Organize these pages into an outline with a ear to fellow peers.
Here's a question: Should a self publishing author set up an LLC before publishing their debut novel?
I wouldn't worry about it for your first book, until you're actually making a profit. You can if you want to, and it's a good idea to stay on top of money issues. But it won't have an advantage until later (there is legal protection, but you shouldn't be worried about that if you aren't doing anything wrong).
