  • Getting more book reviews is critical for authors - without at least 10 reviews it's hard to even give your books away for free. Unless you already have a platform, you should shoot for around 20 before you invest in book marketing, promotion or advertising. But how do you find reviewers? What should you say when you contact them? What if nobody is reviewing?
This video introduces the 3 ways to find the right reviewers for your book - if it's useful please like and leave a comment!
Hey there - I'm Derek Murphy. I'm a fine artist who became a book cover designer, then started writing young adult scifi and fantasy. I've spent almost 20 years living abroad, have a PhD in comparative literature (revolutionary politics in Paradise Lost), and have been featured in CNN for renting castles to use as writing retreats. Although I'm not working with clients anymore, I've built a ton of resources to help indie authors write, design and publish bestselling books.
On this channel, I talk about writing, publishing and creating personal freedom with unconventional business strategies and providing value. My videos are unpolished and a little raw, because we travel full-time and I focus on content, not production quality.

I'm getting so sad seeing people I know publish books, and don't do any marketing or try to get book reviews.. It's better to try and fail, than to not try at all! :P

Thank you for this. I just kind of jumped into the book writing game with absolutely no idea what I'm doing other than I had a story I thought should be told. I'm in the position you speak of with less than ten reviews but so far they're all five star. No I don't personally know them. I just am not sure how to take the next step. This is helping.
My definitions of success is much smaller than even yours, I am just looking to get the story told, and maybe make enough to supplement some income.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Derek! Useful observations. I've decided to follow your slow organic let-them-discover-you strategy, rather than doing an active push promo on the very first launch. Keep up posting your videos..:)

I've had stylists like that, too. When I say, "Okay, it looks great," then they cut more off. Luckily, hair grows back. When you get it back to the length and style you want it, then take a photo to show your stylist next time!

Thank you for the useful video. Is it possible to ask when the right time is for advertising? Is it during the holidays or the weekend? I would be very grateful if you answered me.

I'm an author that is seriously heading towards self-pub, and am interested in Kindle unlimited. I find it very difficult to find time to do all of this while making my writing the best that it could be. I'm going to have to figure something out though.

Yes, it's hard to juggle everything - the easiest thing to do is outsource book design: You just need formatting and a book cover, then you can upload to Kindle and Amazon.
After that... your main page needs to convert the right readers (great cover, blurb, reviews).
Then, you can start getting more visibility with advertising or promotion.

Sorry Derek, please answer this: so if we do not have email list, 1st book we publish and not platform at all, would you use the 5 days KU from the second day of launch, OR you would wait til arrive the ARC reviews (that maybe will never arrive)? In the case we wait we would loose a good lauch and after we could not repair the chart position, isn't it?

Thank you Derek for all of your videos. I've been following you and trying to put your advice to work but I have a few questions if you don't mind. When you say permafree, you mean permanently free, right? I understand how to make your book free on Amazon by asking them to price match it to your free book on another platform, but how do you make it paid again? Or do you just not? Just use that free book to make a list and hopefully sell your next one?
And also, speaking of your list, when your next book comes out and you send out free copies to them before your launch, are you asking your list members to then pay for it when it launches and leave a review? They do that?

It seems Amazon is bringing everybody to his web site promotions and trying to avoid we use third parties services to promote the books....I guess their robot/algor. stuck your book only with third parties big promotions in case of a lot of dowloads, but I bet that when we apply for KU select 5 days for free, the robot is very happy and understand immedialty that everything is all right...the pain is that with KU we are stuck later for at least 3 months and at the launch is quite hard to resist and wait if the things came out bad when we launch....we still anyway can do the 0.99 promo for that time and some Bookbub advertisement.....I will do as you said ARC like waterfall...

I was thinking about advertising for this. What do you think? My email list so far includes me and my husband. I'm writing under a pen name and my family doesn't read the types of stories I write.

    • @DerekMurphycreativindie
      @DerekMurphycreativindie  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Advertising doesn't really help, because you'll spend to much and most people won't buy it without more reviews. I'd do a free campaign first with a big push (easiest) or build a list of potential reviewers and send them an ARC copy (best).
