There are four things you need to get right...
    1. A book people want to read
    2. A book people enjoy reading
    3. A book that’s attractive to those people
    4. Get it in front of those people for less than you spend.
I ramble a bit at the end, let me know which of these steps is the most challenging and what specifically you’d like to understand better.

Hey there - I'm Derek Murphy. I'm a fine artist who became a book cover designer, then started writing young adult scifi and fantasy. I've spent almost 20 years living abroad, have a PhD in comparative literature (revolutionary politics in Paradise Lost), and have been featured in CNN for renting castles to use as writing retreats. Although I'm not working with clients anymore, I've built a ton of resources to help indie authors write, design and publish bestselling books.
On this channel, I talk about writing, publishing and creating personal freedom with unconventional business strategies and providing value. My videos are unpolished and a little raw, because we travel full-time and I focus on content, not production quality.

Speaking of authors who don't want to go with trends, I had an author that I had to convince for about 3 weeks that it's OK that his covers will look similar to the Urban Fantasy cover. Young brunette with magic on her hands, all that. He wanted something totally different when he first emailed me. He finally listened and he realized that I was right. I recommended your videos since he's doing a relaunch soon. Better for him and better business for me. =D

It's so hard to negotiate with new authors and try to armwrestle them into a good cover.

    Well Derek,
What you are sharing is very important to me to get to know and understand, I have written about 600,000 words about some stuff I am very passionate about have a gal that is willing to be my editor and publisher.
Now I am going to spend a week reviewing you information and how to look at some marketing keys for what brings interest from readers. I may re-write all of it after seeing what you have to say?
I liked your comments on content that builds the art of commiunication as a writer to draw in your audience and get them to learn to trust you, you have been learning that well, young man!
Thanks for your help, your writing is far from my interest as mine might be as much from yours.
From listening it sounds that your interest are somewhat mystical or magic arts my are of the Creator as King and from the understanding the written prophetic forward history not yet realized in Biblical text for today as perfect instruction!
Am I correct in my understanding of your work?
Maybe I will be fortunate to meet you in person, until then!
Best regards sir, I very much value your help!
    Dave

600K is a lot, for a series maybe? for nonfiction, that's probably too much, but you could post it all as a blog series, then turn the most popular parts into an actual book (or series of books). I'd probably start there - editing it all and trying to decide what to keep will be hard, even if someone does a great job, it may not fit with audience expectations. I'd be cautious about someone who is both an editor and publisher, to make sure they aren't just a vanity press. Even at my lowest editing rates of 2cents/word, 600K would be about $12K so it can be expensive for editing; but you could get someone for much less to skim it and find the real heart/purpose of al that material that needs to be its own book.

@@DerekMurphycreativindie Hi Derek, thanks for taking the time to reply so much.
Yes it is a lot of work and it is not by any means all one direction, as one work.
I take it "vanity press" types are what exacty what it says. a business dealing for the solicitation of the writers ego? And..not likely truely a literary work but they get paid just the same?
She is legitimate being an author have 18 different books of her own...have not read any of her work.
Thanks for your time, Derek...you're a pretty great person, best of personal direction to find the niche you love sir!
I will keep in mind what you shared once she gets back with me?!
      Best regards,
      Dave

This is all good information, but how do you know if your book cover isn't working? The readers I sell to in-person love my book cover but my book isn't selling online. Feel like I need someone to work with me one-on-one to increase visibility online because I'm confused quite honestly!
