    I completely agree! 👍 And just try your best to make it the best work. All the comments and reviews we read online are not perfect but some have great information to share & was worth reading.

    Great advice. He cuts out the bullshit which I see others not doing. Writing is a hard and solitary business. I agree. No one out there is going to help you, as he says (that much) to craft a better story, or one that doesn't flatline. If you have a literary degree or background, especially, you shouldn't need more than a few inexpensive tools like Grammarly or an audio automated function such as Natural Reader which will help you spot any structual errors. Besides, reading different texts, notably fiction, is a good way to determine how best to edit and approach story writing.

    Thanks for being honest about this, it seems like most people just say a professional editor is required and leave it at that- it sounds like gate keeping to me.

    Hello! I like your videos. I'm quite sad because last december I lost a pendrive with important content of my life, photos, works and manuscripts since almost a decade so I have to start again but still looking for it in the house! Now I have to write a new book. Sorry for being so personal in the first time I write you but you gave me hope. It's really moving your honesty and your good intentions to help others. Thank you so much for sharing this.

    Yeah. I haven't got any beta readers but have had an editor / proofreader go through it. I'm just gonna upload it asap and hope for the best 😁😅 🤪
    Cover design is done and all this cost about 500 dollars. I only have an hour a day to write so it's now or never tbh. There be more Time in the future but want to get it out now dam it. Fingers crossed anyway but I'll be happy with average reviews.

    Another option is to use your beta readers as developmental editors, then hire a copyeditor to fix up the details afterwards. It's cheaper than paying for an editor throughout the whole process, but you'll also end up with a better quality product than using only beta readers or just doing it all yourself.

  • @ThePharaohsCat
    @ThePharaohsCat 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Your beta reader idea sounds like a win win. But how do you deal with copyright etc? If you're manuscript is floating out there, isn't there a danger of someone stealing your idea?

    • @ftrounds
      @ftrounds 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was wondering about that as well. I’m in the self-editing stage of my first book, and that free beta reader option sounds very good. However, it doesn’t seem like it offers much protection from theft. My story is actually non-fiction but the idea of some random person reading my story makes me a little nervous. I’ll probably just look for an editor.

      Nobody is ever half as impressed with your work as you are. Writers are narcissists. They believe in their own work.

      @@MrTrexMcgee I'm always baffled by writers who are narcissists. I always feel as though my writing isn't good enough, and so I'm constantly striving to improve. I believe that staying humble is the key to producing outstanding work.

      @@DeusExMachina50 Narcissists was the wrong word. Writers are self obsessed but usually racked with self doubt. That pushes us to improve. I think typoes might simply be the fault of the publisher sometimes as well. I read a 'large print' version of... what was it... Sharpe's Sword I think. There were SOOOOOO many typoes in that bugger! It was printed in 1988 as I recall. Normally I buy Cornwell's novels but that time I had to go the cheap way and get it from a library, and it was pretty ridiculous. Previous readers of that novel had already taken pencils to the book to point out/correct the errors, and even I did the same to some that I found which hadn't been pointed out. I refuse to believe that they were from Cornwell, I think when the novel was converted to that 'large print' version, then they screwed it up in the process somehow. It was so bad that one of the previous readers even though that Portuguese was spelt wrong, that it's supposed to have one 'u' rather than two, but eventually I noticed that the corrections stopped so he or she must have realized that they were wrong, and it wasn't spelt 'Portugese'. Whatever the case, the Sharpe series went WILD with popularity, even developing several TV movies in the UK, so if books are published with spelling errors, while it's quite disappointing and jarring, ESPECIALLY for a new reader (thank God I already knew that Bernard Cornwell's work is awesome), it might not necessarily be the end of the world. Still, best to try and keep it from being an issue, eh?

    I self-publish with Inkwater Press Inc. in the US. I'm in Canada and have had to remove editing from my contract because the person I was dealing with has left the Company so I am dealing with someone new. The owner phoned me and mentioned to me that the cost of editing has gone up considerably as well as Marketing. This will be my second book with them, and because of the positive experience I had with them, I did receive a good price to publish with them, however, now I'm stuck with editing the book on my own. I feel if I find someone who is willing to edit my book at a reasonable cost, that I am protected by my contract with the company. Any advice?
