- If you want to make a living as a write, you need to EARN more than you SPEND. This means, learning how to get the best services for less, getting free visibility and promotion, and focusing on your core offer (getting your book to sell, with less marketing).
In this video I discuss how much publishing costs, the different methods to publish your book, and some things to watch out for - there are lots of scams and predatory author services who will charge you 10X the price for emotional handholding (which can be fine - after all, nothing happens unless you finish the book: so if buying into a coaching program gives you the motivation and confidence to finish, that's OK... BUT most programs will help you finish your current best idea; they won't help you write a book more readers are going to love on purpose, and that's the single greatest thing that will affect future income).

You're speaking the truth. It's so tempting! But I've seen so many indie writers get robbed after buying a package from sites who promise to promote their book but do nothing for them in the end.

I want to sell a novel in 3-book form - what is the best e-book software to use that is easy to use and good for all e- book platforms.
Thank you Derek for all the advice . I have a question what is the cheapest route to take to publish one's book. I have already looked for private publishing companies and we are looking at around $6700 for 200 copies on paperback and around $8000 for hard copy with dust jacket and it seems quite a bit of money. At those rates we are looking at a book that I would have to sell around the $70.00 range . What suggestions can you offer me in this case ?
So first off, please avoid *all* publishing companies or packages. None of them will ever be a good deal.
The only thing that matters is the cover and the audience/marketing - most publishing companies will ignore or screw this up. I wouldn't trust their design, marketing, editing or anything else.
But, there isn't a solution, there isn't a cheap/affordable publishing company because none of them work. Instead you need to hire designers, editors, etc yourself and upload the files yourself. That might cost a couple thousand $. You can buy 200 paperbacks yourself for around $1000. But you shouldn't... because you should only be focused on print on demand, selling ebooks, things that take less investment so you can spend on marketing.
