    I would like to add .. in saltwater I would not recommend putting loctite on the impeller housing bolts .. use perfect seal or a light coat of anti-seize .. the factory uses loctite there I wouldn’t personally..

    Your a legend my friend! Thanks from Australia! I completed the 100h service from other video and it worked great. They charge $650 for that service here.
    I wasn't happy after my last service with local Mercury dealer here. They charged me for some parts and didn't even replace them. I service electronics and use a trick to see if they replaced the parts. I put a small mark with sharpie on the part then see if the mark is still there after I pick it up. Got charged for some filters and he swore it was replaced yet my sharpie mark was there where I put it. I was NOT happy. Thanks to your videos I now know the parts were replaced.

    Good, thorough demonstration! But after watching this vid, I'm glad I decided to let the boat shop replace the impeller on my Merc 115. Money well spent for someone that is not familiar with outboard maintenance and repairs. Replacing the impeller on our sailboat engine was way easier but that was years ago when I didn't mind doing mechanicin'. And had to do mechanicin' while underway.

    Good job. Best video by far on this topic. Like you, I have found that the question of doing this in gear or neutral meets with about equal success. The Mercury manual says In Gear. I've used a large properly fitting socket with breaker bar to slightly rotate the flywheel to get the drive shaft to align. Getting the weight of the propeller off of there is a must for this old man :-) Thanks much.

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks I appreciate it! Glad you like the video! Yeah I just seem to have better luck doing them in neutral most times .. but if I’m alone I don’t have a choice but to do it in gear like the manual will tell you.. tanks again for watching and commenting!

    I just took mine apart and it shows the impeller fins twisting the oposite direction of how you inserted the new. Actually mine looks identical to your replaced impeller and you have 4 fins that turn clockwise and two badly worn. If you think about what you mention in twisting the impeller clockwise to insert it into the housing and the housing is upside down in your hand then you'd most likely want to twist it counter-clockwise while inserting. Either way it should not hurt anything though, but it is possible.

    • @jimk4267
      @jimk4267 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      you are correct he installed with a backward twist

  • @j.l.daltoin2238
    @j.l.daltoin2238 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    when I put the impeller in I put it on the shaft and watch the keyway go in and rock impeller back and forth to be sure it's in position then slide the water pump top housing on slowly turning the drive shaft clockwise only as I put the pressure on the w/p top housing as it slowly goes down into position with a little pressure on it going down with my hand the reason I do it this way is if I put the w/p impeller in the housing first and push it down I've had the key fall out the way you do it even with the grease trick but if I put impeller on first and I can see the key go in and line up so I feel a lot better that I've got this part right but like you I have better luck doing the going back in the neutral position good video sir I guess different strokes for different folks lol

    Well, I'm personally glad you didn't get the lower part right the first time. Otherwise, I don't think I could have put it back together myself.
    After a few curse words, and a pair of pliers to turn the shaft just right, I was able to finish the project.
    That, however, did not fix my problem, which was that water does not come out the tell tale valve. I have the same engine you have. Great video, either way.

    Question… is it ok to put a little grease on the surface where the impeller meets the housing? I noticed when you were trying to line up the key way that it gave a little resistance, if the shaft moves the spines are going to fight you on reinstallation.

    i see all this video replacing water pumps... but do you ever need to replace water tube upper seal?

    Do you ever use a sealer between any of the impeller gaskets? Just wondering because on my friends Suzuki 300 he ended up needing to because of exhaust leaking into water pump housing.

    did you also have to connect the tube for water pressure / speed odometer?

    I followed your steps doing mine. Quick question. With the motor off, should the propeller spin when it is in forward or reverse in the appropriate direction or lock both ways? When it is in neutral, it spins freely in both directions

    Any chance you can post the cut out dimensions on your table for the lower to fit that cleanly?

    I have the same motor. It hasn’t ran since I had it winterized in the fall.. I put the muffs on it but I didn’t get any water out of the telltale.Maybe ran it for 3-4 minutes . talked to the shop that winterized the boat and they indicated that if there was an issue with the impeller, they would have let us know in the fall. Could I “push” water through the clean out by the motor up and down switch on the left hand side? Or maybe gently insert a short piece of weed eater line in the telltale? Never having put muffs on before, I’m not even sure I had them on correctly. I did have some water coming out of the prop. Thanks!

    Great video! That is the only maintenance item I have not done on my 150 FS (95 hours) I wish I could see a full install of the Pro Kicker on that Tracker, I want to add one to mine.

      @@ReelLifeFisherman 185 hours now, replaced the impeller today along with all of the other 3yr/300hr maintenance - referred to this video and it all went well. As a side note, had a 9.9 EFI Kicker installed and completed the maintenance on that today too. Dang that factory oil filter was a SOB to get off!

    A great video. Many thanks for taking the time to do it. 2 questions. Being from the lock up capital of the world. Melb Aust we run in salt water. Is it best to use the muffs on the bottom of the foot or use the water flush on the side of the motor. Also getting the water tube on again would putting a smear of rubber grease be ok??

    • @ReelLifeFisherman
      @ReelLifeFisherman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks I’m glad you liked the video! So I will always run the motor on the muffs after the salt unless I forgot them at home! lol the flush on the side works great for reverse flushing.. it is not supposed to run the motor on that.. it’s good to use if you ran through sand or mud.. or if you don’t have the muffs or can’t use them like if you keep it at a slip .. and absolutely a dab of grease is a good idea .. I do it every time on the water pick up tube coupler.. thanks for watching and commenting! Let me know if you have any questions..

    Thanks for the video. When I removed the housing 3 of the 4 bolts broke off. I am thinking a machine shop is going to be needed to remove and maybe re-tap the bolt or install an insert. Any suggestions?

      I took it to a machine shop. I will get it back together and see if it cools. More questions in the future I am sure. Thanks.
