In this week's video we (Tim and Sam) cruise between Sonning and Goring on the River Thames. We are currently on a trip to the Llangollen Canal on a fantastic long journey. Watch as our tiller bar gets bent out of line with our rudder, a problem we have never come across before. Will we fix it? We also cruise in convoy for the first time with our friend Jeff.

I suspect that the tiller is just bolted onto the top of the rudder shaft and held in place under fraction. Loosen it up, re-straighten then re-tighten and it will be fine. It doesn't look like anything is actually bent. It might even be designed that way to slip on the shaft so it doesn't cause damage.

THAT was fun! Not sure why, as i am snuggled up warm in bed when I stop to watch videos, but I am really enjoying the spring cruising that I have been watching. I THINK that things have been tougher in England than we have fully understood and the mood this spring is lighter and more at ease. I hope it sticks around as you guys could all use a break.
It is awesome thinking you guys took steps to repair the rudder on your own. Is jumping in to do it yourself second nature to you? Or is this something new and empowering? And how did Jeff do with his boat and engine? It is good knowing that you stayed in touch as he seemed like a nice guy. Did he join you for a wander and a bit of cider? I met a friend for dinner last week and opted for a cider for a change in pace. They had a pineapple cider, which i was curious about and tried. It was neither overly sweet nor tart and i quite enjoyed it. Maybe spring is catching on over on this side of the pond?
    Great video!

Thank you as always for an interesting vlog. I hope your rudder problem is sorted. I guess from the previews of upcoming episodes that it is the tiller bar out of alignment with the rudder. Thank goodness it's not the rudder itself damaged by an underwater hazard.
To go a bit nerd on you, I am guessing you had limited steering to starboard. The wash from the prop passes over the rudder to give you steering. This is influenced by direction of travel too, in your case upstream. Increasing that flow gives you better steering. Boats always turn better against the flow. So in your case, a starboard turn would be easier if you are on the port side of the river, where the water would be flowing quicker. Having said that, you had plenty of room there so no panic. But good practice if you hit a narrower part. Keep chugging! These experiences are good for you.

The highlight "Jeff's Boat" brings to mind a now gone (I think) US company named Jeffboat which began in the 1800s building steamboats. And ...
A bit of Googling finds an article from Workboat magazine in March 2018, "Barge builder Jeffboat is closing its doors after over 180 years." ... "The Jeffersonville, Ind., yard was established in 1834." ... "Jeffboat is the nation's largest inland shipyard, according to its website. It's also billed as the longest continually operated shipyard in the U.S. In addition to the construction of inland barges, the yard has built towboats and oceangoing vessels and handled a wide range of drydock, repair, and machining services. Located on the banks of the Ohio River in Jeffersonville, the shipyard spans 80 acres with one mile of riverfront."

Oxford English Dictionary, who at the top of the web page bill themselves as "The definitive record of the English language", give the following, "Forms: Past tense swung /swʌŋ/, rarely swang /swæŋ/; past participle swung."
That "rarely" notes that that form is rare yet remains legitimate.
OED then goes on to give some word history, "Forms: Old English swingan, ( suinga), Middle English swingen, (Middle English suing(e, squynge), Middle English swynge, Middle English-1500s swinge, swyng, Middle English- swing. past tense strongOld English, Middle English- swang (Old English plural swungon, Middle English plural swonge(n), Middle English suang, squang(e, swange, swonge, Middle English-1600s swong, 1700s- swung; weakMiddle English swyngede, swynget, swinget, 1500s swynged, 1600s swinged. past participle and strongOld English swungen, (Old English-Middle English suungen), Middle English iswonge, yswonnge, yswongen, iswungen, suongen, swngen, squongin, swongen, swonge, (Middle English swongyn, swongon), 1700s- swung; weak1500s swynged, 1500s-1700s swinged."

Hi YTA, we've had a couple of comments about the word swang which has caused a discussion. It's a slang word and in a vlog, slang is acceptable. We agree it would've been better if we didn't say it. We are more likely to make mistakes when we're filming as we're thinking about a few things at once. Thanks for your comment and for watching our videos 😁👍👍🏾

@@chuggingalong Loving the videos. Just thinking that some of your students are probably watching them too, so you have to be on best behaviour language wise at all times. We find your vlog even though we are in Kuala Lumpur, 8 times zones away from UK, so your students can easily find you too.
