Excellent ,thank you. I have an affinity with Henry coming from the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield where he used to stay and hunt not far from our old house.
I actually own a close helmet from this time period 1550’s and it’s got a lot of hits and dents in it. The helmet had so much use in jousting the visor was replaced back in the period. This armor here was never used in a tournament.
You may be mistaken. Every part was renewed and repaired after a battle. Whether it was armor or a sword. That's why some of them still look so good even though they were in use.
@ contact marks can be fixed and some parts replaced that get damaged but the armorer will still show use. I suppose most marks could be pounded out and buffed but small areas of metal would be gouged out so marks would show up if it was heavily used. It probably depends on how fancy the armor was, my helmet was a working helmet no engraving or decoration.
@@craigthescott5074 Yes, you are right. In any case, congratulations if you have a real helmet, that's really something special. I collect things like that too ! Hmmmm almost like this armor was kept in a collection for hundreds of years. Cars are used very frequently and get exposed to outside weather. Of course a car isn’t going to stand up like a solid metal suit.
Got me when he said he would have been riding a horse fully armored. I bet that horse was fuming about that, he probably looked more like a camel after that tourney 😂
His waistline would put him in size 56 jeans. I am slightly over 5'9 and 170lbs and I wear 34 and use a belt for snug fit. I mean sure he was 6" but that's literally putting him a forehead above me. So waist/height size to weight isn't a perfect science but it would have surely put Henry just shy of 400lbs. That armor on and everything considered, any fall from a horse would be such a brutal crash.
Back then it took serious guts to fight in a war. No machine gun shooting bullets from a protected area. And if you were pinned-down or injured, they'd just dispatch you with a sword-thrust to the gut. Not many prisoners of war back then.
Prisoners meant ransom if the prisoner was noble enough. Rank and file might have been dispatched when wounded but nobles were taken captive as a matter of course.

Henry VIII was such a snob..Stole from the wonderful treasures at the shrine of St. Thomas Becket in Canterbury probably to fund such things as this suit of armor.
It’s neither of those things, it’d be made to fit the wearer and the weight is distributed across the whole body. Henry VIII’s weight gain over his life is why we have so many surviving suits of armour, his body changed size so quickly that the old suits were obsolete just as quickly as
@@1aikane Oh absolutely, but it's better to be less mobile & agile than be vulnerable to arrows and swords etc. But I would say armor isn't quite as restrictive as people often think, they are made to fit a certain body so they are more comfortable than they may look. The inner legs look surprisingly exposed. And what a colossal beast of a horse it must have taken to put and armored Henry in the saddle!
If the purpose was for jousting, I reckon they didn't get too much in the leg area
The open inner leg is because if it were closed the main arteries in the groin would be stressed also for the horse, closed would have been awful.

Fascinating! Thank you. Well presented. cheers
Missing the armor codpiece.
Wouldn't have worn one for the joust and this is jousting armor.
Any guesstimates as to how much he might've weighed?
🤔 A lot?
Over 200 pounds in his later years
With a 54 inch waist and over 6 ft he had to have been over 300 lbs

Why is the groin so exposed on later armours ? Like 14th and 15th century plate armour the groin was covered by mail and a shirt
Although Henry VIII left the Roman Church to found the Church of England, his armour remained a steadfast Roman Catholic. True story.

I’ve always thought of Henry VIII as a Renaissance king.
@jeannerogers7085 but in his mind he was the last of a medieval old dinasty..renaissance was an exaltation of the whole european classic traditions..
Debatable, but many agree the medieval era ended with the death of Richard III
Did he ever wear it?
How do you explain keeping a 16th century suit of armour from rusting but we can't prevent a 10.year car turning into a rust bucket..
