I’m seriously in love with Morgan. Something very special about her. I had a wild jackdaw with a very similar leg issue. I fed it in the wild film it and monitored, sent pics of it to a good knowledgeable friend. Had it coming for a month. Day before it disappeared, I knew it was beyond struggling sadly. It was tired all the time. It couldn’t balance to roost. I was sad and I missed I it.

I cannot explain how much your videos have helped me with my own parrots. I’ve just recently lost my lovebird and adopted a crimson bellied conure with special needs. Both his back toes are missing. Not sure if he chewed them off or it was from a severe case of bumble foot but he lacks confidence. I’ve only had him for a week and thanks to your videos with target training and introducing routines and NO SHOULDER unless they have earned it by stepping up when you ask literally has been a god sent. A lot of other videos of yours has been so helpful but I think you get the point lol! Thank you 🙏🏼 I don’t have any parrot behaviour specialist around me so I gotta do my own research and apply and your videos have been breakthroughs for me. Again, thank you, and stay safe with all this Covid-19 stuff. ❤️

I got so lucky with my Rocco. He practically lives on my shoulder, if I try to leave a room he lands there before I get through the door, but he also comes off easy (unless he thinks I am gonna try and put him somewhere he doesn't like, like go to the vet, then he hides behind my neck). I should think about training him to come better, but he is pretty good.

Great video, Jamieleigh! Watching Morgan, I was wondering how her eyesight is? Because she initially refused to fly to you when all the bright light was behind you, then again in front of the Patty door w/ lots of light coming through it. She also didn't want to fly when you moved in front of the kitchen window, but finally did. I noticed she doesn't hesitate when the kitchen cupboards are behind you or the solid tan painted living room wall. Just my observations...I really enjoyed the different camera angles. It allowed us to really see how Morgan's disability affects her. I'm really interested to see how she does taking off on a flat, rough table/board compared to the slick countertop. Did you notice she always goes to the counter edge, so she can grip it for more oomph?
I got a new 2 1/2 month baby sun conure 2 days ago. I started target training w/ her yesterday then again today. She started stepping up this afternoon. I'm so happy! The only issue has been finding a training treat, because she prefers her pellets to anything, so that's what I've been using. Thank you for the videos! They are the most informative & relatable. You explain things very well & use camera angles, so we can see what you're explaining & it de-mystifies training.
Morgan is a beautiful bird! I'm glad she got some tough therapy today, since she obviously needed it.
Good observation! The lighting in my house is tricky, it doesn't really light the whole room so I depend on open blinds and such. It could be a thing but as far as I know, her eyesight has checked out great. And since theirs is better than ours, I think it's all good. I think it just comes with training new things. :)

He eats them… but would eat seeds all day if he could. And his taste buds are weird, he prefers the plain zupreme pellets. Won’t eat anything super sweet or fruity.

Once he finds a favorite treat/ seed tho I’m sure he will prefer that. Millet is also a miracle treat! And you can get it in different flavors :)

What I noticed right away is there was comfort flying into a perceived solid backdrop (cabinet or wall). And uncomfort to fly toward a window or reflective background. Thanks for the video

Thanks m'dear. V useful. I suspect the reason I have a shoulder hugger is 'cos I actually quite like my boyo being on there as it frees my hands to get on with jobs and hang out with him at same time. As always, it's about being disciplined myself to not give in to that 'cos it's the easy thing to do! Back to basics of step up training for us, I think. xC

The tip was avoid letting them up there. Lol work on step up training, and target train them down
I either have a bowl of treats to get mine to choose to come down, or lowermy shoulder to the cage. Like with her macaw it has to feel like for the bird that she is choosing to get down. So you're rewarding her for getting down. You want a pet thar happily gets down, so positively reinforce getting down

It's amazing how the target stick can make a difference! I'm having problems with my bird going to my head, alot! He will fly to my hand when I call him, but how in the world can I target him off my head? Morgan is super adorable!

Hi, i love your videos. I have a question for you. I had a cockatiel, and now i would ike to move forward and i'd love to have a bigger parrot. I live in an apartment so, If i read about any parrot they say they are super noisy and not easy to keep in an apartment except for lovebirds or cockatiel or budgies. What do you recommend for an apartment as large bird and what do you think is the minimum time to spent with them to don't drive the parrots crazy if alone? thanks
I can't believe how quickly she's learning! How often do you do training sessions with your birds?
I know, I feel the same! There's no average amount, I work with my birds very randomly. With Morgan I was only working with her once a day and now I am working with her twice a day, and some days I take off of training her at all.
I think Dave said in a video that its to be few minutes per session, but I'm not sure because it was a conure or cockatiel video.
My one umbrella too that I have for twenty years now goes on and off my shoulders without any issues. She can just sit there for hours and it's her favorite means of transportation. The other too, that hasn't been that long with me, always bites my ear when on my shoulder. I sadly don't have enough ears to train this, so I tend to avoid him getting on my shoulder. But that's really not how I'd like it to be. Work in progress. Greetings from The Netherlands.
you use a clicker a lot, it's an easy way, would recommend using sound commands with different voice tension?
My Quaker parrot loves being on my shoulder ( the left one, specifically for some reason) when I first got him I remembered being told and reading constantly to not let them on your shoulder.
But the thing is, every-time I go to get him to step up off my shoulder, he comes right off with no trouble. Every single time. He comes off super easy.
Never had an issue with it, even since I got him. 🤷♀️
I am impressed! My bird is so clingy. I mean he is my world I love him so so so much. Issue is that he never let go off me. He doesnt stay still usually he kisses or bites. Never let me do any other stuff while he is present so I am having trouble leting him outside of his cage while I am doing work. Do you know what should I do to make him more stabile or comfortable with me ?

Despite these immediate con-realities it doesn't ruin the experience, you just have to love them.

I got an idea why Morgan wouldn't fly a certain route.
I am very sunlight sensitive, my nightvision is very good:)
I reacted to fly toward the sunlight, wasn't a pleasing thought at all. I kind if took one step back mentally, my senses told me "DANGER, don't do it". If I add a clump foot and being frightened to "get dropped" or get hurt when landing, bright light could certainly be a trigger to NOT fly towards it.
I would very much fly away from the sunlight though, sun at my back. No alarm going off there.
Very interesting videos. I know little about bird pets and I really want one. I am wise though and keep watching videos about them, NOT buying one.

To me it looks like the Tarsus or the Ankle are deformed.
I have a suggestion about flight training that I have observed from my conures! They prefer to fly from a solid surface that they can grip easily more than they prefer say, a smooth and slippery table. If you gave some covering that she wouldn’t slip on during take off, she may need to use her foot less often to propel her and may fly to you more quickly and confidently than off of a table where she can’t grip well during takeoff.
Additionally, I think her feet may be uncomfortable on a surface with her large and sharp nails! It would put too much pressure on her toes, affecting her confidence during flight and making her not want to step off of you. Basically a table is a really bad bird perch because of the way they stand and how their feet are !

amazing how morgan adjusted to bad foot. i just added another baby tiel with 1 shorter wing then the other and only 1 neil on 1 foor and 2 on other.have no idea if it can fly or not breeeder clipped his wings

So when training your birds its 2-5 minutes. Is this once a day or a few times?
I have a question...How do you teach your birds to come off your shoulder easily besides avoidance? My African Grey does not ever want to come down unless I either lure or target him off. I was thinking about teaching it like a trick...but I don't want to give her a treat for it every single time for the rest of her life, but if I stop then she stops and its back to square one.

Treats are seeds and nuts and are available at your local grocery store (unroasted, unsalted, just raw). As for the main diet here is what I feed and recommend; www.birdtricksstore.com/collections/health-and-diet. If you have aggression on the shoulder then stop allowing it, that's the only way to "stop it". Morgan's foot was a defect she was born with.

Again a brilliant gold vein, thank you! I’ve even gotten inspiration for my recall training. My ekkie gets inconsistent responses - stubborn species this one - but I’m always training him off his play top cage. I will be trying off other , less familiar surfaces for him.
I notice in your video you aren’t incorporating the return flight training, returning back where they came from, which your other birds know. Where does THIS fit into your flight training processes and plans with Morgan? And how does that contrast with how you would approach with a new bird to your flock who ISNT disabled?
Lastly, in your prior videos you talk about using the reset as a powerful tool to increase response time. Yet I don’t see you doing that here. Is that because it’s too early and you’re simply trying to establish the common language first?
I do also note intriguingly an seeming lack of formal command/cue???

Return flight training - It's too early. She is partially flying to me because she likes me, so getting her to fly away from me is unlikely at this point in time. She needs more skills to land on my slippery flat surfaces, and she has no experience with t-stands or perches. It's not even in the plan as of yet. But if she presents an interest, I'd go with it. It has little to do with her birth defect as it does with where we are at in our communication, relationship and flight skills.
Reset - That is used when the bird already understands the behavior and is just showing hesitancy from lack of interest, or lack of understanding that fast response = treat while taking forever = lost opportunity to earn the treat. That doesn't apply here because I want to ENCOURAGE her to fly as much as possible, because she has never done it. So the fact that she does it at all, is what I want. Once it's more consistent then I could get there but it's way too early. It would only discourage her at this point.
Lack of command/cue - That also comes later during a "begging" phase. Her skills are not high enough yet for her to be begging (she would have to be flying to me as I walk away, ready to go before I am, etc.) But yeah, a cue is implemented during the begging phase and not before. As of now it's pure ENCOURAGEMENT only :)
BirdTricks thanks jamieleigh, that makes complete sense. Sounds like essentially your simply trying to illicit a behavior to shape. You can’t put a word on cue until the bird actually talks.
Is this your normal approach, get flight first then cue it? I only ask because with my training of my ekkie - admittedly not for free flight cause that’s just not for me - it was always verbal cue from the very beginning, incorporating return flight as best we can. Doing it all at once, essentially. It worked reasonably well for me but would love to hear testimony on the flip side of ways to do things.
Yes, I always encourage the flight first until the bird is doing it all the time, and using it as a means of transportation, then I shape it as I want it to be used. So for example, I only want the bird to fly to me when I ask it to, so I trained each of my birds to come on a different cue (their name) and would call them when they looked like they were coming anyway, and then once they did that 100%, I would not call, let them fly but give no reward. Then call, they fly, give reward and switch back and forth (not ever discouraging the bird in the pattern) but allowing it to learn the lesson of cue=reward, no cue=no reward.

This was interesting, what exactly is the point of the clicker? ive seen them being used when training other animals as well.
awakened4gore Working with a clicker is a form of classical conditioning. What basically happens is, that you first pair the sound of it with a treat for the animal. That makes the bird like the sound. It actually causes a new connection in the brain that causes the release of nice "feel-good hormones" whenever the sound is heard. When that connection is formed it is enough to occasionally acompany the sound with a treat to make sure the connection isn't deleted, but it is also possible to still give treats every time.
An advantage is, that if you do a lot of training during the day the animal doesn't get fat from all the treats. But even if you give treats with it all the time it makes it more clear that what the pet did was the right thing. If there always is the same sound immediately after the command was obeyed it is easier to understand what the human wants from the animal. I hope this was helpful and if I forgot anything or made any mistakes please correct me!
You can also use the word "good" but it takes longer to say good then it does to use a clicker, and also I find it easier and more effective to use the clicker. People so commonly tell their bird good job for this and that, and a clicker is more precise and clear for communicating with the animal. It's used to mark the exact moment the animal did what you wanted to earn a reward.

What do you mean by petting in "other places"?
Beak and head are social places for touching, patting on the back or under wings is something for mating-only; in human terms it's like shaking hands (generally accepted as nonsexual amongst humans/ not counting some religious fanatics) or patting someones buttcheecks. Most people caress birds like they will do dogs/cats and will stroke from beak to butt -> bad move!
My parrot is also a shoulder rusher. And I cannot stop him by putting fingers on his leg, because he starts to pull his leg desperately. Also when I bend to take him off he simply moves to my head or my back (the highest point available). If I'm lucky enough to lure him off the shoulder with a treat, he simply jumps on the shoulder immediately after eating the treat, sometimes even with a treat in his beak.
What’s wrong with the left foot is it just not her dominent foot?? Or is it injured or deformed? Just wondering do all birds take off on one foot? Also do you free flight your birds let them go outside or to a park and fly away and come back? Just wondering thanks?

What type of food you use for feed our parrot
Do these tricks and training work with small birds? say a Lovebird or a Ring neck? I'm not a bird owner yet, however once i get established into my new home i would like to get a smaller bird. I used to live with an African grey, however i have never owned a bird myself and i am researching and preparing myself for the day i do get one. Is there variations of these types of training that i could do with a smaller bird if these tactics aren't suitable for small birds? thanks!
Absolutely these techniques work with smaller parrots. I work with untamed cockatiel rescues and they are able to pick these concepts just as quick. My current bird of my heart V just took awhile since he was picky with his food and how he ate his food because he'd only ever been exposed to one type of seed :( Once a parrot has a reward they like and way to receive it they're ready to train.
Parrot Whisperer and Flock Talks do a lot of training work with smaller parrots. My channel will eventually as well, I actually have a target training video with V I still need to upload. *derp* I do however have videos up on considerations as to whether or not to get a parrot and how to readjust how we view them. Parrots are extremely intelligent and thus very sensitive and complex. Even a small parrot is a HUGE commitment, honestly the amount of time they need is the same as a larger bird. Since their intelligence level is nearly as high. Having a parrot as a companion is committing to having a flying small child with a sharp beak for life. The relationship is only rewarding for the human and the bird if ALL the time, energy, research, and LOVE is put in. It's all or nothing.

Questions with treats, I've seen alot of people say don't use sunflower seeds for some reason,
And why only pet on the head and around the neck?
Sunflower seeds are very high in fat, and don't have a lot of nutrition for a bird. They're basically junk food - fine for a treat or two, but not good for meals. And petting a bird anywhere other than the head triggers undesirable hormonal behaviors.
I absolutely adore parrots and your training is lovely and wholesome to watch :) is she (Morgan) okay to have that many nuts? I thought the fat in nuts were bad for birds and that they should only have them as a once in a while treat (not a dig, I’m just genuinely curious as I heard this once :])
The birds only get nuts during training sessions - and even then they only get tiny pieces of nuts, not the whole thing.
I should probably start employing that shoulder thing with my conure, he's a very bitey baby (nothing malicious, he just wants to eat me!) on my shoulder he's usually just been preening me and cuddling up against my beard, but the last couple of days he's started trying to chew my ears (HARD!), which is where I've been removing him, but it's not always voluntary!
