Parrot Handling 101 | Proper Handling With Pet Birds

  • Today I am talking about the most common parrot handling mistakes I see among clients. Some of which include:
    1. Making the spot you don't want the bird to be, the most comfortable spot TO BE!
    2. Over compensating for your parrot (they can balance!)
    3. Inconsistent handling overall.

    I have been watching your videos for weeks now. Why, I am not sure. I have zero intentions of ever getting a bird.
    However, this video resolved something traumatic that happened in my childhood. I was pecked in the face by a relative's bird. Now, I realize the bird was crawling up my arm trying to find the highest and most comfortable spot on me!
    Thank you for such clear and informative videos!

    my parents always had parrots, and I was raised with a green cheek conure. He died when I was 19, and I had a traumatizing experience with a sun conure when I was looking into getting another one years ago. Another awesome 'how to' video with both the 'wrong' & 'right' behaviours on display to make it super-easy for us humans to recognise 😎👍 The 'hanging your bird on the cage' option is brilliant - it makes it easy for the bird to understand you want it to step off, without giving it any ways out of the move like it would have stepping onto a perch. And you can hang them on the door as you close it, so it's easier to keep your hand at the right angle & gives them no chance to sneak through before you close the door. Bird + human = happy!

    Thanks for a great educational post. I’m so glad I’m persisting with this training as on Christmas morning my corella ended up eating the centre out of his circular bird kebob toy (all natural) but he had the whole cylinder of it stuck around his neck (only for a few seconds... and only a corella right!) so I immediately assisted him to get it off but he was so spooked by the event and during the process he latched on to my fingers. It felt worse than it was. He then had that that cute ‘Thanks for saving me and sorry I bit you, time for a scratch perhaps?’ look 😍 I’m also happy I still have my fingers! This sort of training especially helps in these sort of emergency situations. Happy festive season :)

    I'd love some information on how you get your birds into the mindset that it's time for training. My bird may give me one minute of focus on what I'm requesting and then loose interest and fly off. He's not real food motivated so I make it fun because he likes to play. Unfortunately b4 I decided to do more than just tame, I've spent hours setting up play environments and letting him lead the play. It seems to me that he only wants to play when he's the leader. No problems with aggression.

    My cockatiel, Cashew, is stick trained. I've used it to try to get him off my shoulder with clicker and treat. He was ok a few times getting on my hand, but now he bites when i try. I don't react, but he bites very hard. He won't let me put my finger on his foot when he got on early in training. I've put toys out and once in awhile he'll jump to it. I reward it with the clicker and treat. I think he won't get on my hand from my shoulder because he associates it with touching his foot.😢

    Do you ever have issues where the Macaws go after the smaller birds? Do you only have them out at separate times or distancing? I hear Blueberry is in the area.

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Blueberry has a cage and playstand in Capri's room, and then we have foraging trees in all the other rooms (office, my bedroom, two in the main living space) so she tends to keep to her own spaces when the big birds are out or I might shut a door to encourage her to stay in her own space (though she can fit under if she REALLY wanted out) but for the most part, she is always around but not usually close to the medium to large birds. I try to heavily discourage any close contact like that with that size difference. I even do the same with my sun conures and medium/large birds.

  • @daiwuff
    @daiwuff 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a 25 y/o CAG, that I've had for just under 2 years now, and he's difficult to train (I'm starting to think he just doesn't care to). While I can get him to step up for a treat, he will NOT take any treat or food while I'm holding him! So there's not really any way to reinforce him, unless I set him down every time before I treat him. He will entirely reject the fact that I'm trying to give him the treat he just performed for (by turning his head away), and sometimes will even get mad/nippy at the hand holding the treat. And I'm pretty certain it's not due to him being uncomfortable.
    This is coupled with the fact that there doesn't seem to be any one thing he will want to eat all the time, at any time, to use as a treat... as much as he may like it. He is super abstinent about everything, unless it's something HE wants to do... I usually just refer to him as my grumpy old man!

      Train him on a T stand if possible, maybe he will take the treat in that case, as you won’t be holding him? Just a thought, and you may have already done this. But I just know from watching so many of their videos, they seem to start training on a stand anyway. Target training usually first before anything else.

    I wish I had seen this two years ago before I got my first hens..they are very foot sensitive as a species, I’m now wondering if I could have trained them from chicks to use their feet like parrots..

    We have a baby macaw . She is 13 weeks old, and I have two questions: 1) I want her to step up, but my hands are very small…like an 8 year old’s hands. Her feet are super crowded on my hand. Is there anything I can do? 2) my grey was stepping up well by 13 weeks. My macaw still hasn’t managed more than twice. Is that ok? Do I need to work more on it? If so, how can I make tiny hands work for big feet?

    I'm curious about why you discourage shoulder rides Jamieleigh. I've watched many of your videos and this is the first time I heard you mention anything. I think it's more comfortable for a cockatoo to be riding my shoulder. We don't get as many issues with uncontrolled dogs thinking he looks tasty this way and I have both hands free to do whatever I need to. Plus, a needle sharp talon occasionally misplaced right up underneath a fingernail is a legitimate form of torture. Silent agony and tears are the only correct response to this. Reacting loudly in pain will cue him to double down his grip.

    You mentioned things need to be done sometimes with two hands. I only have the use of my right hand and I’m finding it really hard to train my conure to step up onto my hand and then give him a treat. I’m finding everything hard to be honest...

      Try praising him instead, that works as well.

    I'm struggling with a conure who is scared of hands. Takes a treat from my fingers fine but freaks out with any other finger scenario lol

    When did you get the tattoo on your arm?? I'm so oblivious, just noticed it! Hahaha. Very beautiful ❤️ similar to something I want to get. I'm so glad you had the brothers in this video!! Love seeing them 😍 made me laugh when Comet was already on the counter and then you put Tusa down... Comet ducted his head down so Tusa could swing his tail around 🤣🤣 like he knew it was coming hahaha, was so cute!
