She’s so right, paying attention to a behavior only makes it happen more. I have a rescue bird that bit me (a lot) when I first got him. It was REALLY hard to do, but I stopped reacting when he bit me, and now he steps up, isn’t scared of fingers, let’s me touch him when I have to, and his warning bites are now soft and gentle

I think it is fascinating that Z was able to apply her dog training skills to training her birds. I have learned more about animal training from your channel than any other, and have applied your techniques and philosophies (like permission-based training and reading body language) more consciously to my training of my new rescue dog, and they have been extremely helpful. Thank you! Someday I may be able to rescue a bird as well, which would be lovely.

I used the training to train my cats lol. It’s all really similar just slightly tweaked to each animal.

I'm a first time bird owner and I've had my duo for three months. They have both escaped once, and I got both of them home. It was interesting because they got out the exact same way, but the experiences couldn't be more opposites.
My first one, he he was hanging out in the neighbourhood. I saw him and heard him throughout the day and I knew that as long as I knew where he was, things were looking bright. I could see that he wanted to get back home but didn't really understand how. He was out overnight, for 19 hours, and I got him home by placing my big cage in the garage and opening it up 4 in the morning. I made my other bird call for him, and half an hour later, he was home. I felt calm and optimistic about his return and it felt so rewarding that despite my error, I did exactly what needed to be done.
The second one had me anxious and defeated from the very start. She (Who is also named Pixie) was nowhere and I couldn't hear or see her. I walked around, blasting lovebird sounds on my phone, but got absolutely no responses. This night was close to freezing degrees, and I really believed she wouldn't survuve the night. Randomly, I saw someone a little further away from my neighbourhood post about a lost "budgie" (She's a lovebird haha) that was perched on their house, and wondered if anybody was looking for it. Immedietely, I went to the adress and unlike my other bird, once she was close enough to me, she straight up flew to my hand for some snacks. I was so terribly proud of her for trusting me and recognizing that I was there to take her back home to food and warmth.
Spend time with your birds. Socialize with them. Both of mine are barely half-tamed yet it was enough for them to know that home is where they want to be.

Side note: It was a trip to see the Bloomsday Finisher shirt 😂 I always forget how close you guys are!

Awww. Poppy sounds a lot like my Kevin, the Jenday.
We have hawks where I live, and so it is dangerous for me to fly my Jenday outside. He got up into a tree once or twice as a baby (weaned, but under a year) and then I learned I can't do free flight with him in SC where I live. So he has not been outdoors flighted, ever since. He willingly flew down to me when it happened though, because I had taught him to fly/descend since he first learned to fledge . I handfed him since 2weeks of age with the purpose of flying him :-( before learning I couldnt really fly him for safety reasons. He is going on 6yrs old and just flys in the house now. Believe me I wish I could have flown him outside the last 6 years. :(
I have dog training experience too.
We just got leatherforfeathers harness in the mail, so my daughter will be getting him slowly used to that, so hopefully he can go outside on a harness&leash.

Love this lady. Its so true isn't it. Animals aren't malicious, they don't pretend, they're innocent and that's what makes them so perfect. It's why I'm a veterinary nurse. I've saved a few 'Aggressive' dogs from euthanasia. Many people don't understand that this comes from fear and frustration.
An bird training is so similar to dog training. Reading their behaviour is crucial. I'm working with my rescue cockatiel. Sometimes I feel we've come so far and other days I feel like we've achieved nothing. But it's all coming on slowly. Most of the time it's me being inpatient or not reading the signs but we'll get there. 🤪 Very much at the beginning haha.
    Thank you for the video.

"aggressive" dogs are usually simply emotionally damaged, traumatized by something in their past.

Love this video. I think what Dave said is so true, as someone with an anxiety/ depression disorder, I know my black and white thinking will be one of many hurdles with free flying Cheeky. I either think she will get eaten by a hawk, or lost forever. But I know deep down I'm holding her back, and that I need to have trust in freeflight mentors that they know what they're doing.

Ooh, does this mean you know how her name is spelled? She said it's the spelling that throws people off, so in my head I'm like "well, now I need to see the spelling to know whether it would throw me off!" I grew up with people always mispronouncing some part of my name (people from one of my countries can't pronounce my first name, and people from the other one can't pronounce my surname), so I feel the pain.

OMG! When she was taking the collar off of the mastiff I thought that was a bird on her shoulder. I was paying attention to the dog so I didn't really look at the "bird". When she dropped it and he grabbed it I had a mini heart attack. LOL!

I did loads of flight training with my cockatiels. And when mine got out. The next morning came down to a stranger a few blocks away and I got him back! It’s really difficult training my sun/jenday conures one had clipped wings and the other is impatient and gives up easily lol

I have a flock of 8 conures ( 6 young green cheeks + 2 2yrs old crimson bellied) and it's kinda hard to train them. I can't train them separately because they would fly to the cage where the other are. One of the red bellied would make the alarm scream when she's out and all the other would follow. I know how to train one, but with multiple birds it's hard. I don't know where to start. They are tame but still a flock.

My house sparrow just passed away just shy of her 7th birthday, she fell from a tree in my front yard as a baby and I researched what to do to in these situations. I’m ready to look for another bird (specifically a sun conure) but have no idea where to start. I went to a few box stores but they were little to no help as far as age, gender, proper diets, etc. What I’m specifically looking for is to hand feed another baby so we establish a bond, also I don’t want my birds wings clipped at all, taking that away seems so counter to having a bird friend. I’m in Central Texas, is there a reputable place anyone can point me to? Thank you.

Question: I've been taming my budgie for over a month, finally making progress, but her biting has become aggressive, she'll climb on my finger and bite me over and over quite hard (I do nothing, I heard you're supposed to not react, but it hurts... T-T). I don't chase her or try to grab her, I give her plenty of time, I spend at least an hour every day interacting with her, and I give her millet as incentive, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or if she's just aggressive? Maybe I was too impatient trying to get her on my finger... Idk T-T please advise me 🙏🏻 thanks.

    • @doctoroclock7732
      @doctoroclock7732 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Spend way more than an hour a day interacting with her. Poor girl only getting one hour of interaction. No wonder she’s angry and biting. And don’t leave food in the cage. Hand feed her. And don’t feed her store bought junk food. Feed her good, healthy, quality food. And spend all day with her out of the cage. The people in these videos aren’t just spending 1 hour a day with their birds and then expecting their birds to be tame
If you can’t interact with your poor bird, please get her a companion. No bird should be alone. They’re flock animals and are never meant to be alone. That’s just animal cruelty
