    If people would associate the word “trick” with communication they would not be so negative on tricks. It’s just communicating to the bird what we want.

    I think I may know what spooked her. My parents rescued a blue and gold years ago. The owner wanted to euthanize him his name was Max the owner went out of town and left his girlfriend in charge Max had a small wound on his face from scratching due to an allergy his foot needed to be Loosely wrapped to keep him from scratching the girlfriend wrapped his foot too tight and he lost all of his toes on his left foot he would spook and flutter like that when you were holding him if you moved a little too quickly or if he went to adjust his feet and you were moving he would slip I have found with working with Max that if you position the bad foot near your thumb you can actually place your thumb over the foot to help give the bird a little more stability I thought that this advice might help

    +BirdTricks Could it be possible she doesn't like stepping down because hands are most comfortable on her bad foot. Just a thought. Hard surfaces on the ankle seems like it would be uncomfortable for any animal. Anyway,

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think given her condition ANY surface is uncomfortable at this point, which is why she's gotta figure out how to best use them all. I have wrapped her t-stand in vet wrap so it's softer for her though. But outdoors, things are not going to be the most comfortable (the ground, or trees, if she lands on any of these) I want her to be able to take off FROM them and to me. So she's gotta figure all this out :) but yeah, probably part of her hesitancy.

  • @mygirlcheech85

    I was wondering how long Patty has had Morgan. Is she mad/scared bc of the medical care stuff Patty had to do? Was that the start of their relationship? These videos are awesome!!! So helpful!

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      In the beginning they had a great relationship for the most part - Patty said Morgan would even snuggle against her. Then she had the toe amputated and had to give meds via toweling so that really diminished what they had created. When she came to me, she immediately took to me that first day and has shunned Patty in the mean time (actually biting me when Patty came around and avoiding interaction with Patty.) but just the day before yesterday, I asked Patty to trim Morgan's nails and Morgan let her no problem and has been stepping up for her great! So we are finding that when we interact with Morgan individually she's great, but when we are together, it could go either way and usually goes a way none of us like.

  • @kleanthisxanthopoulos9670
    @kleanthisxanthopoulos9670 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I have two questions;
    1) OK, everything is a trick for the bird, including behavior that I want it to have, but won't the bird associate the behavior I want it to have (e.g. come to me when I call it) with treats? Will the bird keep that behavior after training? For example I train the bird for 2-3 months, I get it to have the behavior I want it to have, will the bird keep that behavior afterwards, without "treating" it and just by praising it?
    2) As someone who likes both cats and parrots I'd like to own both but I always assumed that they are mutual exclusive despite the fact that I have seen people with parrots owning cats as well. Basically I thought that these people are irresponsible and are asking for trouble, seeing you (Jamie Leigh) though I am reconsidering. How do you train either or both at not having the cat attack the bird and go against its (the cat's) instincts, especially since it is known that even a well fed cat is a natural born killer and will kill for sport.

    • @seiliaa
      @seiliaa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kleanthis Xanthopoulos I know that I am probably not the person you are looking to have respond but, 1) it depends on the bird. The bird should learn the trick and perform with or without the treat. Birds are very intelligent and remember things very easily. Even without repetition. 2) I would never keep a cat and a parrot together. Just my opinion but I would never even attempt it. Even if they get along well, it’s not safe because a cat can very easily and quickly change its mind. Also, I felt the need to add that 1 single drop of a cats saliva will kill a bird. The same goes for dogs. I hope this helps!

    • @kleanthisxanthopoulos9670
      @kleanthisxanthopoulos9670 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does, thanks

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1.) In short, yes. But it will be more on your bird's terms. For example, if you train it to fly on cue with treats for 3 months it's going to be dialed into that. You can use what I call "random rewarding" more on that here; www.birdtricksstore.com/blogs/birdtricks-blog/an-introduction-to-random-rewarding-in-parrot-training. However, if you just stop giving treats every time you ask the bird to do that, and reward it with praise or quality time instead, it will only do the behavior when it wants THOSE rewards. Which may not be as reliable as the treats.
      If I am hanging out, my birds want to be with me and come to me. But that does not mean they would come when I call, they would come when they want to be with me. Big difference. You can reward with petting or a toy, whatever the birds interprets as a reinforcement for doing that. Make sense?
      2.) So my cat situation is a little different than most. My cat is around 13 years old, and I adopted her but she doesn't have any front claws. So that takes away a lot of the usual issues most people have. I've honestly thought about whether or not I'd get another cat when Ninja has passed and I'm not sure because the situation works for having birds around and I doubt I'd find another similar situation again! I am sure there is a way to work with both but since the saliva and cat nail punctures could be fatal to a bird, it is incredibly risky. Here are some blogs on this topic; www.birdtricksstore.com/search?q=cats

    • @kleanthisxanthopoulos9670
      @kleanthisxanthopoulos9670 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, so if I understood random rewarding correctly, then I will start with 1 trick = 1 treat and then I will gradually move to 2 tricks =1 treat, all the way to 5 tricks = 1 (big) treat. After that time, and assuming that the bird shows consistency will it be possible to ask from the bird the said behavior without any treats most of the time (but just praising it) and using trick/treating more rarely?

    • @BirdTricks

      I started training only once day, but I have since changed that to twice a day. (Morning and evening). I was originally training after her veggie breakfast, and now I train then PLUS an evening training before her pellets. As for the 2-5 minutes... nooooo... it took 8 minutes of WAITING for her to take her first flight I think. Maybe longer! What's a good bird for a first time owner? I'm new to your channel so I'm sorry if you've made a video about it, but I'd love your thoughts on the topic. I know no bird is easy and everyone is different, but what types do you recommend for a first time owner looking for a companion that's good for handing but not too difficult to train without loads of experience?

    • @seiliaa
      @seiliaa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Guinea Winnie as long as your doing tons of research on it, any bird can be! I always recommend conures, budgies or cockatiels to first time bird owners. The only thing I would recommend is starting out smaller. People way too often get larger birds like cockatoos or African Greys and then realize they are in WAY over their heads. Green cheek conures are incredibly intelligent and they have HUGE personalities. Just make sure you are doing/have done as much research as possible. If you would like to speak to me further I would love to give you some advice! My instagram is: ParakeetCorner I would prefer not putting my email on here or I would.

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like Seilia's advice and also recommend starting small - caique's, Senegals, cockatiels, parrotlets, etc. Budgies are fantastic! I think they're less intimidating to start with because of the beak size but they're still capable of all the stuff the larger ones are. They can talk and learn fun behaviors, etc.

    • @seiliaa
      @seiliaa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      BirdTricks I completely agree! Budgies have huge personalities! I currently have two as well as quite I few others including larger birds and let me tell you, my budgies have just as much sass and personality as the larger birds! They might be small but they make amazing companions and an they are especially great for someone that is new to owning birds!

      Yay! Thanks! Yes, we agreed and that's why we only use UNTRAINED birds. I watched a harness training video once on a baby bird and thought... ughhhhh so unrealistic! Hahaha. A L shape might help, I am unsure if she would be so comfortable she wouldn't know how to take off or if she could push off better - but the plan is to teach her to fly off all sorts of surfaces because I want her to be able to come back from anywhere once I get her outdoors.
