yea, i really love their "style". there's a lot of good serious info here for anyone who will just listen... but they also have fun with it, to remind us that we should be having fun too; (almost) nobody enjoys going to work, so if it's become a chore, or a 2nd job to you, maybe you need to step back and find a different way to approach it. though, i feel like Dave and Jamieleigh probably DO enjoy going to work. unfortunately not all of us can be parrot trainers and stage illusionsts!
I have to say a big THANK YOU!!! I watched this video out of curiosity and saw somethings mentioned and realized that I did some of those. I have 3 birds and it wasn't very much fun to train as I am realizing now that i was frustrating my birds. I decided to give it a go this morning to see if it made a difference. Wow how exciting and so much more fun. My birds responded so much better than before and it was a lot of fun! I do have a question though, how do I know what is a good amount of time to train? I find my quaker is so excited to train that he is quite upset when I stop. he comes running if he sees i am touching the training stand. My other 2 birds are slowly also getting excited about training. Thank you so much for changing our lives for the better. I have invested so much money into trying to train them for the last year and it hasn't worked plus frustrated everyone. These small tips have changed so much in our lives.
I loved this video! The intro was hilarious 😅 and I have much respect for people who properly commit to a joke, a dare, or in this case a demonstration, such as Dave's leap to find the treat! 🙌 The birdie bubble is a new concept to me, and makes heaps of sense, thank you! Regarding the jackpot rewards, the accumulated knowledge I have on these between these videos, and working with Mel here in Melbourne, is: - good for breakthrough moments; - good for occasional surprises when the bird does a trick they already know, so they stay motivated to keep working on them all; - useful for when a bird is clearly trying really hard to get somewhere with a trick, but the end of the training session is nearing (but not there yet), and the jackpot can keep them motivated to keep trying; - sometimes just at a random point in a session to encourage a bird that's been struggling, or sick, or scared, to get excited about training again. Ideally, the jackpot should *not* be given at the end of the session (at least not consistently), because that's reinforcing the behaviour of becoming unfocused or unresponsive so that you end the session early (and thus give them the jackpot). Regarding the bad touching, obviously stroking their back/wings is no good, but does that mean that an enthusiastic "mwah!" kiss on their back when they're on your finger is also out? Budgies are just so smoochable! 🙊 Thanks again for another fun and insightful video 😃

Thanks so much for all your explanations of animal training! I am actually using this for our cat - Knowing about treat value and when to use a clicker has made a huge difference. He is engaged and it's a great energy burn! (And if you'd like to know, Gyver's three non-food incentives are attention, attention, and more attention!)
Hi i also clicker trained my cat, my old dog and also my old horse. I love clicker training as it really helps the animals to understand what you want from them. I love your video's and I have learned a lot from them I don't have a bird at the moment but I use too and i wish I would have found you when I did have my bird's as I think that it would have really helped me to understand more about birds. But I am learning a lot from you now so if I ever did get another one I know alot more. But even when I had my bird's and I was only 10 years old I always had them out and they was only in the cage at night and when I was not there. Thank you so much for doing these videos I have learned a lot from them so thank you for all your time you put in to doing these videos.
You jackpot when you see that the bird has made a choice that shows you that "Oh! I got that!" response, and has done it really well. To me, it is a great improvement that you especially want to reward!

First of all good catch from dave... Coming back to jack pot reward.. You said in earlier video that to shape the behaviour, which then bird gets reward and we need to random rewarding to keep animal motivated to work harder. Jackpot reward also to make unpredictable so the bird thinks everytime the task it complete,it will this be jackpot reward ? So jackpot reward was given to shape the behaviour and make birds unpredictable.. I think i was correct.. If im wrong please teach me... That video was uploaded one year ago... The information given for larger parrots is essentially the exact same thing for smaller breeds such as cockatiels, conures, budgies, etc. Birds as a whole may not be able to communicate to you as a child would however their body language speaks volumes about how they may be feeling/wanting. Every bird is a bit different however the body language is fairly universal with some differences from species to species some being much more apparent. It's very important to understand the bird's body language to utilize that in your training sessions so that you can more easily understand it's mood at the time of training and judge better how to go about the training session in itself.
I appreciate you guys so much and what you do for birds :) I really feel that you are drastically improving the life of many bird owners out there in the world, helping them bond on a deeper level through training and it's a beautiful thing to see! In a lot of ways you remind me of "My Cat From Hell" in how you're pretty much mostly retraining the human lol!
A lot of these tips are the same in dog training. A lot of these terms and tips I learned in dog training school. The main point is learning how to communicate with a creature that cannot speak. I even used some of what I learned for my son when he was a toddler. Yes I know a toddler is not a dog or bird, but it IS a person that cannot communicate with you. It gave me so much more understanding.

you should give a jackpot reward when you are working on something new and they do it really well or if they just do something really well obviously there are more times you should give a jackpot but this is one of them !!!
I give jackpot treats (2-3) at the end of our training session. Thank you so much for this! I use your TH-cam videos and got your video package for Christmas and it has helped build a better bonding relationship with our 26 y.o. Amazon whom we have allowed to have a Diva/Boss attitude. With your techniques she picked up target training very fast and gets excited when we get out the stick and clicker for training it also seems like she is respecting us better too! Right now we are working on letting her figure out how to do things on her own instead of us being at her beck and call. She’s an awesome bird who thinks her job is to take care of us, her hairless monkeys 🤗 One thing about her training, which she takes seriously, is if we get distracted she’ll say, “HEY!” to get us back on track. She’s the boss of us but we are working on it.

I genuinely could be trained to comment in exchange for a heart haha. But I think the only time you give a jackpot reward is when the bird does something really well. Does the best version of a trick that it's learning or improves at something it was struggling with for example.

This video was great! Recently got a lovebird and have been watching as many first-time bird owner vids as possible to make sure I was training correctly ... because I want a good bird. Started target training right away and to be honest it wasn't going great. He was being overly aggressive with the stick which I thought was just a bird thing (and that he was playing with it) but now realise it is a big no no! Also, the birdy bubble thing! Makes so much sense why we struggle when my friend is in the room. I end up in a conversation and then I end up losing the attention of my bird and everything deteriorates. I will be sure to take that step back (or banish my friend during training). Lastly, the target stick ... I was one of those terrible people holding the stick while also holding the treat. Must have been very confusing for Salvador! Learned so much from this one video ... can't wait to get home and do some focused training.

I use jackpot rewards when the animal accidentally or on purpose nails the exact behaviour I'm asking for, creating a positive association that will teach them to get excited about striving, very useful for shaping and fun for me too :).
Jackpot rewards are given when your bird does something you ask that was difficult for the bird. It could be the first huge moment when they fly to you facing them. Or the first time they say their name when asked. I'd also say when you feel that feeling like OMG we just had a huge breakthrough then jackpot. I'm clearly new lol but when I get so elated by our clear communication I jackpot but if there is hesitancy or unsureness I give a smaller reward if he at least tries. I'm working with a 3 month old sun conure who even clipped is already flying to me upon calling his name.

Jackpot reward used for breakthoughts and when the bird does the exact behavior you want. There are a huge reinforsment for the behavior as the bird gets so many treats and when it offers the behavior again and doesn't get as many he is like hmm that time I got a ton of treats why not now, what can I do to get another jackpot
So jackpotting works for birds!!! Jackpots are great for when a bird has had a hard time learning but gets it, even by accident. Jackpotting anchors and makes memorable a defined behaviour.

He is having a bit of trouble getting this rescue he adopted named Pheonix to be friendly towards him. He also pets his "Fire Chicken" Taruke (sorry about the spelling) from head to tail. Both are macaws. Love yall
19:05 Offered my bird a treat today and instead of going for the treat, started to perch on that same hand still holding the treat instead. I thought it was the cutest thing and was so unexpected.

I should have waited to comment until the end of the video. Still working on Coco. He's super tame and eating out of my hand. Still not stepping up tho. He seems to outsmart everything I try with him. The thing that is hard with him is that ALL he wants for a treat is millet. I was using a little nugget. He would touch the target, take it out of my hand, take a bite, it falls back into my hand, and I use it again and again. Then he got smart and started running off with it. When I use tiny individual grains of millet he gets frustrated. I've tried all sorts of other nuts, seeds, veggies, even fruit (even tho lovebirds aren't really fruit eaters) and has just not interested. He's such a smart little bugger. I got him in May and I really thought by now I'd be able to hold him. Annndd he just started bird puberty so that adds so many new obstacles!
I Love watching your videos!! Could you do a video for care of a baby parrot? When to start training, what steps to take from day one, to set up for success. This will be my first bird but my fiancé has had several different birds...... still trying to talk him out of a cockatoo.
I just want to use this opportunity to mention that i have been following you both for about 6-7 years now nan wanted birds at a shop that was closing down i was eyeing up 3 cockatiels that were really cheap my nan said no coz i had 6 gerbils lol... so i used this time frame to pet sit her birds and studies and research. Near the end of my gerbils lives i finally got a pair of budgies the cockatiel i wanted was screamin the shop down which made my nan negative about me having one i was happy with 2 budgies from you guys i taught them the spin and the wave... a few years past my nan forgot about the screaming cockatiel from the shop and allowed me to get 2 more my birthday i now have 2 budgies 3 cockatiels and one of nans linnies. With the other 2 to come eventually. Im glad shes got me to wait for having birds coz it made me find you guys and i have learnt so much thank you for everything you have taught me
You give jackpot rewards when the bird does better than normal at the thing you wanted it to do. So like if it responded faster, or for example if it was a spin that the bird did a full circle without stops for the first time, then youd give it a jackpot reward. That way the bird understands that "oh if i do more of that, then ill get more treats." Give the bird jackpots to keep it motivated but not too often cause it would get full and cut the session short and probs on bad terms (since the bird wouldnt want to train anymore would end the session themsleves). There's also random jackpot rewarding to keep the bird on its toes. So whenever it does a trick, it thinks "is this the time that i get the jackpot? What about now? Now? OH YYYYAYY!" This also helps keep the bird highly motivated
My bird loves to be praised to the roof, but also just getting my attention in general. And when I'm singing or dancing obnoxiously. You really don't need food to get him to do stuff..
Jackpot rewards are used when the bird does exactly what you want without hesitation to reinforce the behaviour to continue. 😇😇 wish you guys could come to Australia and host a master class (Sydney)
Jackpot rewards are mostly for break through events during training. Generally, that also ends the training session. Rarely the break through event happens early enough to continue the training session.
I’m thinking about Volunteering at my local Bird Rescue. Do you guys think it’s a good idea? Meaning, would I get good experience with taking care of birds? Or would it be 50/50? Because in the future I DO want to be a parrot owner, and I have Very little experience. you should give a jackpot reward when you are working on something new and they do it really well or if they just do something really well obviously there are more times you should give a jackpot but this is one of them !!!

Thank you so much for this! I use your TH-cam videos and got your video package for Christmas and it has helped build a better bonding relationship with our 26 y.o. Amazon whom we have allowed to have a Diva/Boss attitude. With your techniques she picked up target training very fast and gets excited when we get out the stick and clicker for training it also seems like she is respecting us better too! Right now we are working on letting her figure out how to do things on her own instead of us being at her beck and call. She’s an awesome bird who thinks her job is to take care of us, her hairless monkeys 🤗
One thing about her training, which she takes seriously, is if we get distracted she’ll say, “HEY!” to get us back on track. She’s the boss of us but we are working on it.
Jackpot rewards are for huge improvements and or bird did what you asked FIRST TIME. JACKPOT.

But I think the only time you give a jackpot reward is when the bird does something really well. Does the best version of a trick that it's learning or improves at something it was struggling with for example.

This video was great! Recently got a lovebird and have been watching as many first-time bird owner vids as possible to make sure I was training correctly ... because I want a good bird. Started target training right away and to be honest it wasn't going great. He was being overly aggressive with the stick which I thought was just a bird thing (and that he was playing with it) but now realise it is a big no no! Also, the birdy bubble thing! Makes so much sense why we struggle when my friend is in the room. I end up in a conversation and then I end up losing the attention of my bird and everything deteriorates. I will be sure to take that step back (or banish my friend during training). Lastly, the target stick ... I was one of those terrible people holding the stick while also holding the treat. Must have been very confusing for Salvador! Learned so much from this one video ... can't wait to get home and do some focused training.

I use jackpot rewards when the animal accidentally or on purpose nails the exact behaviour I'm asking for, creating a positive association that will teach them to get excited about striving, very useful for shaping and fun for me too :).

Jackpot rewards are given when your bird does something you ask that was difficult for the bird. It could be the first huge moment when they fly to you facing them. Or the first time they say their name when asked. I'd also say when you feel that feeling like OMG we just had a huge breakthrough then jackpot. I'm clearly new lol but when I get so elated by our clear communication I jackpot but if there is hesitancy or unsureness I give a smaller reward if he at least tries. I'm working with a 3 month old sun conure who even clipped is already flying to me upon calling his name.

Jackpot reward used for breakthoughts and when the bird does the exact behavior you want. There are a huge reinforsment for the behavior as the bird gets so many treats and when it offers the behavior again and doesn't get as many he is like hmm that time I got a ton of treats why not now, what can I do to get another jackpot

He is having a bit of trouble getting this rescue he adopted named Pheonix to be friendly towards him. He also pets his "Fire Chicken" Taruke (sorry about the spelling) from head to tail. Both are macaws. Love yall

19:05 Offered my bird a treat today and instead of going for the treat, started to perch on that same hand still holding the treat instead. I thought it was the cutest thing and was so unexpected.

I should have waited to comment until the end of the video. Still working on Coco. He's super tame and eating out of my hand. Still not stepping up tho. He seems to outsmart everything I try with him. The thing that is hard with him is that ALL he wants for a treat is millet. I was using a little nugget. He would touch the target, take it out of my hand, take a bite, it falls back into my hand, and I use it again and again. Then he got smart and started running off with it. When I use tiny individual grains of millet he gets frustrated. I've tried all sorts of other nuts, seeds, veggies, even fruit (even tho lovebirds aren't really fruit eaters) and has just not interested. He's such a smart little bugger. I got him in May and I really thought by now I'd be able to hold him. Annndd he just started bird puberty so that adds so many new obstacles!
I Love watching your videos!! Could you do a video for care of a baby parrot? When to start training, what steps to take from day one, to set up for success. This will be my first bird but my fiancé has had several different birds...... still trying to talk him out of a cockatoo.

I just want to use this opportunity to mention that i have been following you both for about 6-7 years now nan wanted birds at a shop that was closing down i was eyeing up 3 cockatiels that were really cheap my nan said no coz i had 6 gerbils lol... so i used this time frame to pet sit her birds and studies and research. Near the end of my gerbils lives i finally got a pair of budgies the cockatiel i wanted was screamin the shop down which made my nan negative about me having one i was happy with 2 budgies from you guys i taught them the spin and the wave... a few years past my nan forgot about the screaming cockatiel from the shop and allowed me to get 2 more my birthday i now have 2 budgies 3 cockatiels and one of nans linnies. With the other 2 to come eventually. Im glad shes got me to wait for having birds coz it made me find you guys and i have learnt so much thank you for everything you have taught me

You give jackpot rewards when the bird does better than normal at the thing you wanted it to do. So like if it responded faster, or for example if it was a spin that the bird did a full circle without stops for the first time, then youd give it a jackpot reward. That way the bird understands that "oh if i do more of that, then ill get more treats." Give the bird jackpots to keep it motivated but not too often cause it would get full and cut the session short and probs on bad terms (since the bird wouldnt want to train anymore would end the session themsleves). There's also random jackpot rewarding to keep the bird on its toes. So whenever it does a trick, it thinks "is this the time that i get the jackpot? What about now? Now? OH YYYYAYY!" This also helps keep the bird highly motivated

Jackpot rewards are mostly for break through events during training. Generally, that also ends the training session. Rarely the break through event happens early enough to continue the training session.
