    Thats funny because with his previous owner, my conure learned that screaming doesnt get him anything, but waving his little paw gets him tons of attention. So everytime he wants attention or treats, his puts his paw in the air. So cute and funny! I love him!

    I might be in the minority here, don't have any parrots I just love your videos for the training methods you use. You are both so calm with your animals and I'd love to be able to get that same energy when I work with my dogs on clicker training, They are both rescues with behavioural issues, and strangely enough taking advice from your parrot videos, teaching them to touch when they are doing inappropriate behaviors has worked as a great method to distract them. I much prefer being able to reward them for doing something right. I have 2 terriers and can totally relate to whole what's in it for them mentality. Watching Dave work with the doves was fascinating & I'd love to see how they come along in later videos. I am loving these Tuesday videos.

      wwaxwork That is a really cool perspective. The cool thing with dogs is that you can train them so much more often, and do so many more reps than with parrots. I got this book on amazon for our dog, it was 101 puppy tricks and it was really fun to teach our shepherd! I highly recommend it. I think the more training you do, the more positive interaction you are having and the more fun your pups are having and the more they want to learn other things. What you are talking about with the touching sounds like a form of targeting or even stationing. Good job!

    I have to disagree with the service animals comment, one of my friends has a service macaw who is a spectacular companion and essentially a 'heart monitor'. They aren't likely to fetch your slippers, but can be surprisingly good at helping you with anxiety, picking up on impending epileptic fits etc.

      Oh, please. Your friend is one of the many selfish people out there who are abusing the rules, regulations and laws regarding service animals. A "support animal" is not a service animal unless it performs actual work and task for an individual with a disability. Your friend is simply a narcissist who tries to take her parrot inside places it doesn't belong.

    I know this is an old video, but just thought i'd chime in here concerning dogs: dogs see you as their equal too, just like birds, but it's us humans that traditionally try to belittle them and see them as worth less than us. For anybody owning a dog: getting into the mindset that your dog is a person, just like you, with their own worries, wishes and deep thoughts, and really learning to respect your dog, will help you very much in having a fulfilling and meaningful relationship with them over the course of their lives.

    I train dogs. I've trained all methods, including schutzhund which focuses on pray drive manipulation. My friends are retired police K9 unit cops and we discuss techniques together.
    For a dog, pray drive is instinct and hard to control. It activates at anything appearing to run or trying to escape - fast movement. So you're bird flying from one chair to another can or down to the floor anywhere near the dog can take a bite from that dog who will then crouch into a ball of shame seconds after having done it. Meanwhile your bird can suffer very serious injuries from even a light bite. I have a fully trained German Shepherd who has already been conditioned not to react to the birds movements and even today i catch him opening his mouth as our bird flies by his face. Never leave your bird alone with a dog. Pray drive isn't a choice for a dog and your bird could pay the price.

    I wouldn't describe a "neutral" space as an "uncomfortable" one for the birds/animals. Just a space (or room) where they usually don't spend time in or where they have never been in. Actually an uncomfortable space would be detrimental for what you want to accomplish. I'm just saying. I really like you, your family, your pets and your channel is very informative. I mostly like how you are inside....very caring and always looking for what's best for your animals with the tools you are provided. This may sound so odd! But I apply a lot of "parronting" tricks to "parenting" tricks! Of course there's a divide there but some of the same goals apply. As a mother, I'm sure that you understand what I mean. Reward vs discipline and that sort of thing. Probably because they're on the level of a three to five year old child. But I do notice that most of the methods are very similar.

    The Power of Positive Parenting by Dr Glen Latham is an excellent book on reinforcing good behavior and ignoring negative behavior.
    One trick from the book is to put something in the environment or move something (tip a picture slightly askew, etc) to remind you to watch for good behavior. We often don't notice things unless they're bothering us!
    My son's parrot is an emotional support bird :)
    A highly treat motivated bird could be trained to do some things for a person.
    My daughter read about a study (we've had trouble relocating it) where parrots were trained to deliver a paper scroll message to a person they recognized from a photo! They were better at it than corvids, raptors and pigeons.

    Hi Bird Tricks, I recently acquired a ten year old military macaw with a huge personality. He is super friendly and social. He will go to anyone and lets anyone pet him. I've only had him a month and mostly just been working on establishing the rules of the house. He is amazing and responds really well to plain speak. He has free run of the house under supervision. I took him to the vet for a general well visit. He wouldn't let me near him for two days afterwards. I feel terrible but I have to trim his nails at some point. I've always trimmed nails on my African Grey but he is very forgiving and never needed restraint for trimming but my African Grey was a baby when I got him. Is there a safe way to trim a mature macaw's nails without ruining his trust? I've never had a bird hold a grudge against me and now I'm apprehensive about trimming his nails. Thank you for any advice you have.

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No formal education. I just observe a lot - kind of a watch first, action as I go and constantly adjusting to the animal's response. I would talk with other trainers of other kinds of animals (like large animals... dolphin and killer whale trainers, for example, because I knew the techniques they'd use to train behaviors would HAVE to be without force (how do you force such a powerful and intelligent animal like that?! you don't!) I love picking the brains of show-trainers at different types of animal sanctuaries and places... and a lot is also just experience working with different types of birds (aggressive, fearful, playful, etc...) to see how different animals respond under different pressures or backgrounds and adapting to that response accordingly.

    • @candradevidasi9795
      @candradevidasi9795 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BirdTricks, really cool and interesting! I’d love to see a video of how you got into this. Do you have one? From watching a few of your videos it seems like it’s all under the category of classical conditioning.... and I can’t help but wonder about the similarities and differences between training animals in a loving way and effective child discipline. I imagine there have to be SOME similarities because young children are learning what behaviors get them their desired reward/response and what behaviors are most effective for escaping undesired responses/activities. Would love to hear your thoughts about this as a mother!

    I know 2 people with service birds, one is a chicken it alerts it’s owner to seizures the other is a conure and it picks up small items the owner drops that they can’t pick up because of pretty bad RA in their hands and a bad back so when they drop light things the bird can be instructed to pick them up or drag them to an area the person can use the couch or a chair to get the item off the floor. So it IS possible it’s just super super rare and in some cases (the chicken) it just happens by chance (the chicken does the predator alert call right before a seizure happens)

    If someone is throwing their birds to “discipline”, they should not have a bird 🤦‍♀️
    Definitely agree on distractions. Foraging toys are amazing. Although I have to admit that if the screaming or bad behavior is persistent I will give my bird a 10-15 min time out in the dark. Not too long, but just enough to calm her down.
    Parrots are big babies. Sometimes when my Gray is screaming randomly and no toys will help, I simply put her on my lap while I’m working or watching TV and she starts grooming or resting her eyes- as if all she wanted was to be close to me.
    Ultimately, it’s all about patience!

    Lately I'm struggling with training my family on how to behave around my bird. I don't know how many times I need to tell them not to yell at the bird every time she's screeching because it causes her to want to screech more. They also don't listen or forget when I tell them they need to make sure the bird can't see the vacuum when they are using it if they don't want her getting spooked and screeching because it moved. (She's afraid of moving vacuums, but not the noise.) When she screams, I'll ask what might have triggered her when all her needs seem to be being met and instead of evaluating anything leading up to it they say, "Nothing. She's being a butthead." They keep forgetting not to get upset with the bird for screaming at the dogs for behaviors we don't typically like out of them and to just focus on getting them to stop the unwanted behavior to get get her to stop the unwanted behavior she's preforming. They keep treating a single one and done screetch as if it were consistent screaming. They don't listen to me when I say that she may be basing some of their behaviors towards them on the way she observes them treating certain family members (Ex: Bird is less nice to whoever appears to be making other people upset.). I can't introduce the spray bottle cleaning method to my bird because Mom decided to use that as a way to try get her to her to be quiet.

      Not going to fly when it's your mother and it's your parents' roof and you currently can't afford to move out or your little sister who's under the age of 18 while you're a legal adult. It's enough to get them to threaten to call the cops for your behavior.
      The family member that gives my bird the least problems is Dad. He almost never complains about her. She absolutely loves him (though every animal in the house is in love with Daddy.). He will intentionally seek out quality time and the only problem I get with him concerning the bird is him forgetting about the vacuum thing. The most bird related complaint I get from him is his reminder of when I need to clean the cage (despite me being pretty decent with caring for her and attending to her needs) because he doesn't want her living in filth. He even claims he's going to set up an outdoor cage for her to play in when the weather gets nice. I wish the rest of the family would follow his example.

    Also, when training a galah, what treats do you give? Everyone says seeds are what they love best but when you're training you give multiple treats in a sessions and seeds aren't good to give to them so it's like what are you suppose to use?

In training, I do have a question . . .we adopted a Myers Parrot in June of last year & we are settling in nicely. A big thing that we can't figure out how to get him to stop doing is flying up to a shelf above the living room window. There are items on this shelf that he could knock off and wouldn't be good. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Great info! I clicker train my blue and gold macaw, but have been having a hard time training her to accept her aviator harness. She will put her head through the loop, but then quickly pulls her head back out. I've been reinforcing her for placing her head into the loop, but am stuck on how I should proceed to the next step. It's been about a week, and each training session I try to leave the harness on a little longer..but she freaks out when I manipulate the harness on her and really seems to dislike it. Any input would be great, many thanks!

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      blizzkillz I would focus on just getting her to accept it around her head area for longer periods of time. So at first, just putting it through the loop she gets a treat (and give the treat in a way that she is going for it by reaching forward and keeping the harness on instead of pulling her head out to get it, if that makes sense). You could even use luring a bit for this, by holding the hole in the harness up, she puts her head through to reach for the treat and you click. You can also give random jackpot rewards for her being more calm and collected than normal and let her eat a few treats from your hand with it hanging on her head. This will help her accept it there longer.

When I try the clicker and give him banana (his favorite treat) he doesnt do anything except wanting to bite me or freak out. My other conure sunny bear, she was so easy to tame and stepping up. With berry, instead of perching on my finger, he just want to just bite me. Oh now he just got out of his cage! :D What to do now. Getting tiered of getting bit.

I was just starting to make some headway with her so she was a little bit hand tame. Should I have taken her with me back home, or was leaving her with someone else an okay thing to do? Hi
    I've been watching your videos for a while now. I work with children with special needs. You and I use applied behavior analysis. Such as positive reinforcement ( you give a treat for the Behavior you want the bird to do. )
    Google definition :In operant conditioning, positive reinforcement involves the addition of a reinforcing stimulus following a behavior that makes it more likely that the behavior will occur again in the future.
    Coming from a individual who uses this on a daily basis. I recommend people to watch your videos. You know about behavior and behavior modification

    What about when the bird doesn't care too much about treats? My 21-year old umbrella cockatoo has a handful of foods he really likes, but when he is in a mood, nervous, etc, he completely ignores any kind of treat. I have a clicker I'm going to start introducing. I may have to find times he's in a trainable mood to do that and hope it carries over to times he isnt? I'm just worried that when I attempt to redirect him during a time he's being less than willing, he will ignore the treat.

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      reiningrules Cockatoos are by far the hardest birds to train and they often don't want treats, they usually work better for praise, attention and petting. I call bird training "opportunistic" a lot because sometimes you can just tell when it's going to work and when it isn't, and you have to jump in and try is when the opportunity is there. That is when you use "capturing" to capture certain moods of behaviors you want repeated (basically it means sitting around and waiting for that, click and reward and back to waiting again!). But it works! You may also need to adjust the training diet a bit, weigh your bird and see where he is at food-motivation wise.

      Reward raising a foot?
      He's bound to eventually wave and you reward that heavily. Then you can get him to do it in response to a cue.
      Basic positive reinforcement.
      All animals (humans included) learn similarly.

    I got a good question for you. I have had Loki, a B&G macaw for a little over a year now, i have known him for about 3(ish) years total. Since i brought him home i have noticed that he is raciest...like hardcore. The neighbor on the side of me that has the window that Loki is close to, is from south Sudan and every time he saw them he would freak out. I ended up covering up that window and we can no longer use it. He also knows the 'N' word, and sadly knows who its meant for. It took months, but he is now ok with them, the kids can play and he finally says "hello" to them when they run past the window, he no longer calls them names. try explaining that to your neighbor. (i assumed some of his freak out was because of the fast movement) The issue i am having now is when he happens to see a dark skinned person on TV, he looses his shit! I am Canadian, and i live in a mostly brown/black community so...it can be interesting when windows are open and he can see outside. How do i stop this?

    How do I ignore biting and attacking me? 🙁I have a rescued female ringneck she is extremely aggressive she means to hurt when she bites, she hisses at me and lunges at me to attack my hand, but! She will take food from my hand ? I don’t understand her. I’ve had her 5 weeks, she wouldn’t move from the cage corner now she will step up on a stick and let me take her out the cage on a stick. But the minute I offer my hand without food in it she attacks me. 🙁

      Just Need A Narrowboat
      Wear thick gloves and let her bite. She will learn that biting you is not a way to get you to go away. Also, try covering your hand with your sleeve or towel at first. Birds don't tend to like feeling skin under their feet, and hands are soft and hard to balance on, so most birds are really reluctant to step onto hands at first. Try wearing gloves and taking her out on the perch, then just offering your hand for her to step down or up onto. If she lunges, don't pull your hand away. It's a strong reflex, but keep it steady. She will learn that you being in her space does not hurt her.
      I had a cockatiel with the same issue.

    Dave, It's been a while.....I spoke with you maybe 5 yrs ago about my blue and gold Macaw named Rico. I had just got him as a baby and had no clue what to do. Well...with your advise (they live for food, period) were rock'n. I don't think he's really happy though. Heck, who would be happy stuck in a cage every day of they're life. The time has come that I'd like to take him out and let him fly. I just don't know where to start. He's already bailed on me a couple of times causing me to grab my 42' extension ladder to save his ass out of a few tree's. But he's a good bird, if I call him he's like Dad come get me!!! Luckely, I have. Please send me some info on "How to fly your bird", I really would like to let him go, and come back of course. I live in Austin Texas, heck, make a trip of it. Austin's got a lot to give and I'm really stuck on how to let Rico freak'n fly. Give me a call, I'm not worried about throwing my number out so here it is:

      I owned a sun conure that loved doing tricks and playing with toys. Maybe try toys or affection as a treat instead. Also, it may be that they don't like the treats you're giving them, so make sure to find out what they gravitate towards. I don't know what type of conure you have, so they might not be the same way.

    How can I get a Patagonian Conure with UNPREDICTABLE behavior to consistently act like it trusts me???
    I've had him/her and an Alexandrine Parakeet each for the past 30+ years.
    Over those 30+ years, when I got them, the Alexandrine got the name "Gator" because of how he would aggressively bite, hold onto and twist/shake his head until a chunk of skin was removed from previous owner's hand or offered body part...
    ONLY time Gator has EVER bit me was when the Patagonian Conure was on me and Gator used miss-placed aggression trying to attack Pat but bit me since he couldn't reach Pat...
    The Patagonian, when I got him/her had name of "Pat" and I was told he/she was a baby and had never bitten anybody but never seemed to seek attention either...
    If near the cage, the Patagonian will aggressively attack any body part coming close to the cage, but as long as away from cage usually seemed willing to step onto my hand without biting...
    But lately, if Pat is on the floor and I walk past, no matter how far from the cage we are, if offered a hand/finger to climb onto, Pat will aggressively attack the offered body part... And if I walk past without trying to get Pat to climb onto my hand, he/she will aggressively attack my feet enough that he/she has literally removed chunks of skin from my feet even when I had shoes on and Pat bit THROUGH the shoe!!! And I've had numerous times where Pat has bit my shoe or slipper and refused to let go until I swing my foot forward and end up with Pat flying 2 - 4 feet through the air before landing and approaching for another attack or "fun ride..."
    How can I get Pat to STOP randomly attacking me and consistently being kind to me???
    When Pat's nice to me, he/she will sometimes even let me scratch his/her neck, back and other body parts... But most of the time lately, if I just lower my hand/finger to try getting Pat to step up, instead of stepping up consistently... Almost 1/2 the time, Pat will nicely raise a foot and climb on without biting or showing any aggression, but the remaining OVER 1/2 the time, Pat will aggressively ATTACK if I even TRY offering a body part for him/her to climb on!!!
