      MTB yumyum - curious curious curious (too many cats are dying because of me.)
      Like you said in the video, it would be intriguing to compare the new Ripley to the Ripmo and see how they compare. My current frame is a 2018 Intense Carbine and I find myself wanting a different frame. I’m considering the Ripmo, Ripley, or a Devinci Spartan 29. I’m afraid however that the Ripley will not be sufficient because of its shorter travel in the rear, and to up stroke the fork to the 140mm in front is detrimental to me in changing the frames attitude when climbing.
      It’s a long short as I would plan on using an angleset regardless to slacken out the front end and make any frame I decide on into a beast.
      I ride these same trails a lot to nearly every day and I find myself in wanting something that climbs a bit better, but does not compromise when it’s time to descend. I don’t shy away from the climb to the top of Jacobs, even if the starting point is from my front door. The more time in the saddle, the better. Even if riding from my house up to the top.

      @@ArcticCanadian Yeah, I also would like to explore "which bike" some more. As in, if you were biking mostly Salt Lake/Park City + a few times a year in Moab and had to chose, I'm leaning toward the Ripmo. I have seen one reviewer mention that, due to the DPS rear, Vs. DPX2, the rear end doesn't "keep up" as well as it perhaps could. Any additional comments would be very welcome!
      This is a question for my adult son, actually. I have the Trance 29 Pro 1 with the DPX2. My son demo'd the Trance with the DPS and immediately hated it, after riding the DPX2, so if you feel the Trance with the DPS is good, you should (maybe you have and I missed it) try the up-shocked version!

    I demoed a Ripmo last year. With only a minute of quick suspension setup, it felt amazing. Was eager to get off the ground, but still felt efficient climbing techy switchbacks. I ended up getting a Pivot Mach 5.5 without demo-ing it (mistake, I know) thinking it would have a lot of the same feel. Nope. Even after messing with the suspension settings a ton, it still feels kind of sluggish. Granted, the 5.5 has an X2 on it and the Ripmo I demoed had a DPX2, but I've now got the X2 with the max amount of volume spacers and it still doesn't have the pep of the Ripmo when I want to goof around. I'm in Wisconsin, and don't genuninely have a need for all the travel the 5.5 has. Thinking about selling it and going a different route. Something tells me this new Ripley might be the absolute sweet spot for the riding I do, and since I loved the Ripmo I'm guessing the Ripley would also feel great.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, for sure give the Ripley a demo... feels a bit snappier than the Ripmo and not quite as stable at high speeds as the Ripmo... excited for you to give it a try! Good luck!

    I just did a demo ride in Sedona, AZ on a Ripley V4 last Saturday. I have nothing to compare it to besides an older Marin Bolinas Ridge 29 hard tail that is oversized. I have not ridden anything else (read complete beginner). This was my very first ride on a bike with full suspension. Talk about going to extremes. From a complete beginner's perspective I'm not really sure how to describe it. I rode it for several hours and only remembered I had a dropper post half way through the ride. Yah, that's where I'm starting from. Once I remembered that I could lower the seat, I really liked having a dropper post and see why they are so popular.
    Anyway, it was a nice ride. The shop set it up for my weight with gear. When riding, I couldn't really tell what the rear wheel was doing. It just floated along the trail. I guess that's what it's suppose to do. It also never felt like it was loosing any grip. The weirdest part of the ride was that the front wheel seemed like it was sticking out way too far in front of me. I kept thinking I was riding a chopper motorcycle. It felt good on the down hills but it seemed a little twitchy on the uphill. Maybe it was just that I am not use to this new geometry and all. Having been riding for only 6 months on a cheap hard tail I really don't have anything to compare it to. Having said that, I also don't think that it was worth over $6,000 (dream build, etc.) for the bike, brand new. I would buy a used one next year if the price got down to below $4,000. I'll have to do some more demo rides in the near future on some different bikes to see if the Ripley will be my next bike. I plan to test ride some Pivot, Devinci, Yeti, YT and Giant bikes this year and then decide which to buy, ... used of course.

    Jason, I stumbled across your channel a couple of months ago and have viewed hours of them. I think the combination of your analysis, delivery style, and riding clips form the best bike review channel I've seen. I live in SLC. Based on your reviews and know a couple of people with the new bike I'm considering, I may have narrowed the search to either the new Ripley or the Ripmo. Like most of us in Salt Lake Valley, I mostly ride Corner Canyon, Park City and Heber City trails, with a couple of Moab-St. George trips each spring and fall. I began riding in '86, and developed the skill required on hard tails to ride all the Moab trails until the newer wave of super-tech stuff (Ahab, etc.) became too much. I currently ride a 2014 Cannondale Scalpel and do just fine on it on most of the Moab stuff. I still do WRIAD annually. Road TWE last fall with the Scalpel and stayed pretty close behind friends with longer travel bikes. However, I know the new geometry bike with longer travel would blow me away. Based on my location and riding, I know the Ripley would be the choice, but I have a friend with a Ripmo and another with a HD4 who can stay with me on the uphills (very strong). I have yet to ride one of these modern bikes, and can't wait to do so when the snow clears. I visited Salt Cycles (and mentioned you) before the holidays and got stoked. They had the new Pivot Trail 429 Endro. I know you owned the standard version before your Ripley and prefer the Ripley. Any plans on test riding the Enduro? Any input/reply will be greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work. It's fun to see how much fun you have doing it!

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      John, Thanks for the support heading over to Salt Cycles. Excellent shop that will take great care of you! If you happy on the scalpel, the Ripley will feel like a revelation. Seriously. The geometry alone will give you so much more confidence and the extra travel will just be icing on the cake. I currently own an HD5 and a Ripley. I'd be happy on the Ripley just about everywhere in Utah with the exception of only a few trails where Id rather be on the HD5. 90% of my riding the ripley is plenty of bike. Give what you've said and the trails you riding (sounds like Ahab is the rowdiest trail you ride) I wouldn't go with the ripmo... Ripley is your bike dude! The Pivot T429 could be a lot of fun for you but its heavy and coming from a true xc bike it might be more change than you'd want. btw, Ahab is no problem for the ripley!

    Jason,
    Love your channel and hope to get out to Utah one day to ride your trails and the St. George area.
    I live in NY below West Point, in the Hudson Valley. Trails here are rocky, rooty, and technical, with some flowing sections depending on where you ride.( I ride at Sterling Forest in Tuxedo mostly).
    Looking at a few new bikes, the 2020 Yeti SB 130, 2020 Pivot Switchblade, 2020 Ibis Ripley, and the Santa Cruz Tallboy. Any thoughts? Rode the new Trail 429 and wasn’t crazy about it.( liked the geo of the old Mach 429 Trail better). Loved the new 2020 Mach 4 SL though, but just not enough travel.
    Looking more like the Ripley and SB 130 fit the bill best. Need a good technical climber. I’m 5’9 and 170lbs. Riding the new 19’ Stumpjumper Expert Carbon 29’er you tested now. Thx’

      Yeah, all of the bikes you listed are going to have much more modern geometry than what you've been used to. It might just be a matter of getting used to it. Of the bikes you listed I think the Ripley is the best offering. It does everything really well, climbs so incredibly well and still descends with lot of confidence.

    • @AOL0321
      @AOL0321 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      MTB yumyum Well I have the new Stumpjumper now, so I know the new geometries, but that FSR design is so inefficient, especially for out of saddle climbing. Lots of squat in that Horst 4-bar design,which they partially remedied by changing the shock valving. Fewer pivots, also make for less flex. The DW Link, VPP, and Switch Infinity links seem so much better engineered

    Hi Jason, love what you do with these vids. Gives guys like me who can't demo many bikes a good picture of the personality of a bunch of bikes. I'm trying to choose between a Ripley and Ripmo. I currently have a 2019 Trek Fuel EX9 and looking for something more capable to push harder on bigger terrain. Both bikes will definitely be more capable than my Trek, but I was wondering how the two bikes compare in this department? Which is easier to pop and bunny hop and by how much? Would the Ripmo be a good daily driver on your trails but then give you that extra confidence on bike park days? Appreciate any feedback.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the Ripmo will give you the bike you're looking for on the bike park days or even just the higher speed gnar. The Ripley is incredibly but I wouldn't say it feels any bigger of a bike than it is... meaning, it feels like a 120/130mm bike. The Ripmo built up lighter weight with lighter wheels could be my daily driver but it would be more bike than I need daily. That all said, I always have 2 bikes and I could justify owning both these bikes!

    2. What's the complete build on those light weight carbon wheels you have (rim brand/dimensions and spoke number) cause I think you laced them to 240's
    3. How do you like the carbon KS LEV? Durable, etc?

That said, I'm not riding super rough trails right now.... but the light weight feel of the Ripley is just so much more fun for me. So, I think I could make the Ripley the do everything one bike for me! I have two sets of carbon wheels laced to 240's one is 27mm internal diameter at 1,340 grams and the other 30mm at 1,560 grams These are both custom build by Salt Cycles in Sandy Utah and I highly recommend the "yumyum wheels" ks lev carbon dropper has been problem free for over 1,000 miles now and I've been in some mucky rain/mud with it and it just keeps working! Not sure I'd need a piggy back shock on the Ripley but if you planning on long sustained descents or lift service laps it couldn't hurt.... that said, If you feel like you need a piggy back shock just get the Ripmo.... ultimately it comes to terrain and speed. If your terrain is similar to what you see in my videos' then the Ripley would be my pick.... and I hit speeds of 30+ mph almost every day on these trails and still feel like the Ripley is the bike for me! Good luck! Also, I'm planning on making a Ripmo V2 vs Ripley video as soon as I get a little better weather... thanks!

    It would be great to get specific on the complete list of bikes in this category and narrow down on the strengths of what this bike can offer vs. the others. Also, what can this bike NOT do that something like a Yeti SB130 can (ie, compared to the closest comparable) vs. putting it up against a totally different category (ie, no one should be comparing this to the Ripmo/SB150/etc.) Im most interested in lining this bike up against an Evil following and the like. Hey Jason! I’m so excited to have found your channel! First off, thanks for positive attitude and for always keeping the stoke-o-meter set to all-time levels!
    This gen 4 Ripley looks absolutely bonkers! Basically, everything I’ve wanted in a bike. I know you’ve touched upon sizing, but wanted to ask nonetheless. I’m of similar build to you, at 5’9” 145, so with that said, I’m wondering if a size large frame would be too much bike? I may not have an opportunity to demo, which is a bummer. I know modern geometry, dropper posts, etc, have changed sizing to some degree or another. My local Ripley dealer won’t be receiving a medium frame with their upcoming shipment. Just size L and XL. I certainly don’t want to spend $ on a L and regret it later. Just wanted to know your thoughts on the medium frame vs large frame scenario.
    If Salt Cycles has the build I’m looking for in the size I need, I’d definitely make the 8 hour drive. It beats having to wait a month or two. Did I mention I love Crown Burger, lol? Wishing I were back in Davis County!

    You had some comments relative to the sb100 but how would you compare ripley gen4 vs sb130 and vs Ripmo? You mentioned ripley could be your “one bike” but wouldn’t ripmo handle wider range of terrain??? Or does ripley’s slow speed prowess edge ripmo’s longer travel chops?

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sb130 and Ripmo are different category all together... the Ripley is in line with the Trance 29, Following MB, Trail 429, and even the Rocky Mountain Instinct. Ripmo for me is to big of a bike to be my "one" bike... it's made to smash terrain to bits... the sb130 is the same to me. 100% honest here... this might offend some but most people are over biked by a long shot... in this video I hit speed of 36 mph in super chattery terrain on a 100mm yeti sb100. That's not to say the sb100 is the right bike for this trail and speed but my point is it's still fun and safe and way way way better on the climbs and all the lower trails than it's larger brother the sb130. I would take the Rocky MOuntain Instinct, Ibis Ripley or Pivot Trail 429 as my only bike over just about anything else out there... really liked the Giant Trance 29 too! Sorry, long winded lol

Asking because I have a Mach 4 SL on order. I'd expect at high speeds the wider (and thus likely heavier tires) would create a sense of stability and strait line control. Also the Live Valve bike probably feels more harsh overall but I'd hope it would give you better time on sections that require pedalling.

    What would you say is the main reason or two you chose to sell the SB100 and go with this bike and now that you have had it for a while do you have anything to add on your thoughts on the bike that you didn't feel/notice in the early days of this bike. Thanks for all the great videos and reviews.

    Did IBIS make a RipMO and RipLESS? lol On paper this looks like I bike I've been waiting for! smuggler-ish geo but with DW link and light weight!

    Dear Sir, thanks for the review! Do you have plans to review the new Yeti SB130 Lunch Ride? Are they available where you are? My LBS has one on backorder for me and it won't come in for a few weeks... What do you think about the Yeti SB130 Lunch Ride?

    Jason, hi. Demoed and loved the Ripley too. So light. But have a worry. Maybe you can help (not sure). I'm 6'2" and weigh 210 lbs. Concerned that I should be looking at a bigger shock bike (like the Ripmo). Demoed both (Ripley and Ripmo). Both great. Loved the Ripley climbing and over all light feel (coming from hardtail XC bikes). Riding the front range in Colorado (similar trails to you). Did not have any issues with Ripley. But again, concerned about my weight and the smaller fork and shock. I want a Ripley, but think I should get Ripmo due to my size. Any advice? Does body size matter?

    So would you consider this bike more stable and zippy in comparison to the new 5010? You didn’t have a lot of great things to say about this years changes on the Santa Cruz.

      yeah, this Ripley has a lot more pop and life in it than the new 5010... I still really like the 5010

    Sorry I was late in the chat and I think you were burned out a bit when my question came through. Ibis noted 120-140 forks. I have a 25 mile round trip on street to get to the dirt from my home and currently use a Scott Spark RC WC, but it gets sketchy at speed and was looking for a replacement. I have a Mojo 3 as well and love it, but figure a 29er will be more efficient to drag up to the dirt, hate driving in traffic on the way home as it ruins the zen of the MTB day. So just checking back as to what you think as I was set on the SB100 before this bike came out and now this throws a wrench into the plan with a possible 120 light oriented build. Might sell both bikes to just have one to ride at all times, probably running Ardent 2.35's front and rear. Live in SoCal and my riding is mostly fire road up and single track down once at the dirt. There are single track up days, but less common. Sorry for the long Q. Thanks for your great videos as same trails different bikes is the best way for sure of analyzing bike to bike.

      Like you I ride my bike to the trail head from my house... only mine is a little shorter... 10 minutes each way on pavement. I honestly think you'd be happy at the 120/130 and I do realize you're coming off a spark with race geo and fast tires... don't get the ardent tires... it has to be the ardent race 2.35... the ardent is garbage. Also, you might try the Rekon race on the back. We've been running a bike (sniper) with ardent race front rekon race rear and it's fast for sure! and if you end up with a sb100, that's a fine way to go as well. I'd prefer the Ripley myself :) good luck!

      @@mtbyumyum Thanks for the response. Only apprehension on 29er is that I have never crashed the Mojo and have had some tough crashes on all three 29ers i have owned. Rode 26 for 30 years and I am a little shorter than you. Maybe 29er will never work for me as my riding style may be too old school. I will demo and see how it goes.

    Have you ridden the new Cannondale Habit yet? Basically identical set up to this new Ibis. Would love to hear some reviews from you on new Cannondale mountain bikes. You said Salt Cycles is a Cannondale dealer, so why not? Go throw a leg over the new Jekyll 29er and throw up a video; ought to be comparable to the other 150mm 29ers you've demoed and reviewed. Same thing for the new Habit 29er. I've been riding the new Habit now for 2 months and am loving it. Handles nothing like a wagon wheel 29er; it's super poppy and nimble, boosts off everything, wants to party instead of just truck through everything. My only qualm with it is it is stupid heavy, even with the carbon build. 32 pounds. Blew my mind when you put on this video that this new Ibis is 25 pounds! I would love that! Seriously bothers me that a 130mm trail bike is 32 pounds.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I'll take one for a spin... I've ridden cannondale road bikes for years... for what ever reason I've never liked their mtb line up.... they used to use a bunch of proprietary crap on their bikes... triad whatever it was... looks like the new habit is a horst link... i'll check it out!

    • @MusicManMTB
      @MusicManMTB 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep the new habit has none of the proprietary oddities. Just a straight forward trail slayer :) It does still have the 6mm offset in the rear but that's one thing that they've been doing on their higher end bikes for awhile and it actually makes quite a difference in the handling and is part of why they can run shorter chain stays. I had the 2018 Jekyll 27.5 with the Ai offset and now this new habit. Both are super zippy in the handling. Love it. The Jekyll still has the proprietary volume reducer switch for the rear shock but it's not even close to the same thing that crappy diad was. Scott does the same thing on a few of their bikes. And word has it that cannondale is moving their whole mtb line up to be like this new habit, just straight forward killer bikes without any gimmicks.

    Ripley v.4 vs T429: which has a more active suspension? I’m currently demoing the 429 (from Salt Cycles because of your channel, I’m new to the area) and was hoping to side-by-side compare to Ripley but due to limited availability it is not possible at this time. I also have the Ripmo on demo, so maybe you can tell me where the Ripley fits in. FWIW, I am a strong all around rider who can out-climb the descenders and out-descend the climbers. Love a light bike to make climbing more enjoyable, but there is more to the equation which makes a mtb climb well, so I’m trying to suss that out. As an aside, in my experience, a Horst linkage bike climbs very well because the supple/active rear end end smooths the trail and improves traction, particularly over rocky/bumpy inclines. I’ve never owned a DW bike. I’m disliking my Tallboy3 and the VPP because the pedaling forces seem to cancel the suspension.🤷🏻‍♂️

    Both you and BKXC opted to run 2.3 inch tires for your test, instead of the 2.6 tires which comes standard. Could you address the difference in riding the Ripley with the tire change, and if it is your opinion this bike just runs better with the 2.3s. Thanks and love your videos.

    Finally they internally routed the cables. The old Ripley LS looked like crap with external cables. Even the rear triangle looked funky on the old Ripley. It was an ugly bike! This new Ripley looks sooo much better then the old Ripley and from your video it sounds like it rides even better. It think I found my next bike. Can't wait to demo it. By the way, great video.

    Why does Ibis not offer "fox performance elite" fork option? Only performance or factory...

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      honestly, most people would be better off with the performance fork anyway... the grip damper in that fork is incredible and I actually prefer it to the fit4 damper in the performance elite and factory forks...
