    Those trails looked perfect for this bike, tho I can’t relate at all on how it feels compared to a Stump-Jumper with 20mm less reach & not toooo similar geo numbers with a full degree slacker HTA than the Stump-Jumper.. but i like how you made the edit and video! Loved this bike when I reviewed it also but wasn’t blown away on the chunky stuff kuz it was sooo light! I’d probably overfork it a little and have a Rocketship of a 80-90% do anything Trail Slayer!!!! Cheers man! Love the Content

    My favorite bike! I'm lucky to have one and a Ripmo. The Ripley is what I choose to ride on most rides. Super capable on tech too. I swapped out Schwalbes for smaller (and lighter) Maxxis and the difference was immediate. Great review!

    Trail 429 = stable & planted trail bike / SB100 = fast & precise trail bike / Ripley v4 = Balanced trail bike... I've ridden all of these extensively and you cant go wrong with any of them. It really comes down to the fine details and what you like in a bike.. My pick is the SB100, you feel like a serial killer slaying the G.D. trails with that machine.. Love it!!!!

    JC,
    I have a 19’ Stumpjumper Expert Carbon(NOT the short travel)and want to upgrade(Just don’t care for the pedal bob out of saddle with the FSR) to one of the following choices:
    1. Ibis Ripley
    2. Santa Cruz Hightower
    3. Yeti SB 130
    I ride the same type of rocky, rooty technical trails that you do, here in NY( just south of West Point in the Hudson Valley)
    Which do you recommend, based on our trail types? I’m about the same height and weight as you. Love the channel!

    • @jctrails
      @jctrails  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! If the trails your riding are like mine for sure the Ripley. It’s the best pedaling bike out of the group. If you plan on getting a little rowdier with it just put a 140 airspring and some more aggressive tires on it and it’s ready to party.

    Note for anyone else who wants one, if you can find the frame in stock, Ibis will let you order the build kit afterwards.
    Regardless, off to try the available now new Hightower. :) (lots of rumours a new ripley-esk travle tall boy or blur coming out soon too for anyone else stuck with no bike)

    Thank JC for nice reviews, you are right person to do it this job ;-) I am between Ripley V4 and more XC bike like Epic Evo or Orbea OIZ TR - especialy because weight. Can you compare Epic Evo vs Ripley? Is it possible? Climbing, acceleration, descending, stability, GEO. I think everything is not about weight. And i see, you changed forks to Pike and rear shock, is it much more better? The main reason is better for jumps i think? I am 205 pounds rider it will be definitely better with pike for my weight? Thank you!

    • @jctrails
      @jctrails  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mikkke! With your body size I think the Ripley is going to feel super light to you. The Epic Evo is a great bike but it’s not as versatile as the Ripley. You could put a light weight wheel set and drop the travel in the fork to 120mm to have that race bike feel. Then if you decide to get a little rowdy put a 140mm travel airspring in the fork to handle some chunk. I changed the shock to Rockshox because it provides better small bump sensitivity.

    Nice video, and great review! Have you ridden the Ripmo? Almost everything you're using to describe the Ripley, I used to describe the Ripmo when I demo'd it. I ended up buying one, and couldn't be happier. Since then, I have ridden the Ripley, and it's literally like I got on a mini Ripmo that feels almost the same minus a little high speed stability, tech capability, and obviously you don't want to slam it into rock gardens at the same speed. But....it pedals RIDICULOUSLY well, is even more poppy than the RIpmo, and is a very fun bike to ride. For MOST riders who stick to green and blue level trails, it would be the better choice over the Ripmo, because it would make those trails come to life more on the Ripley.
    Ibis has REALLY NAILED it with the 2019 - 2020 lineup. I had never really given them much attention until I got on one the Ripmo at Outerbike 2018 in Bentonville last October, but I was blown away, and I rode just about everything there that weekend. The Ripmo haunted me, until I pulled the trigger. I would love to have a Ripley too...but I want to stay married. :-)

    • @jctrails
      @jctrails  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Willbros I still need to try a size large Ripmo, when I rode the medium I was all squished up and couldn’t get comfortable. The Ripley is the best ST travel bike I have ever ridden. It is perfect for mellow trails.

      Kinda funny...I’m 5’10” and 175 too. I started on the L Ripmo, and never tried the M. No need. Like you on the Ripley L, I felt like that bike had been custom fit for me. Good stuff!

      @@A.D.D.O.C.D.T .... I feel bad about turning this channel into a conversation, but I guess that's what reviews typically bring. Both bikes are phenomenal. The Ripmo pedals so well and is nimble enough that the versatility of having the extra travel makes it a no brainer. But...in fairness, I land FAR closer to the adrenaline side, and hit bigger gap jumps, big drops, and I use the travel on almost every ride. There are a few trails around that at times I do wish I had a really light bike just to carry more speed and climb better, but it's not worth that to me for everything else I would give up. But...if you tried to compare the Orbea Oiz to EITHER the Ripley or the Ripmo on pure pedaling and climbing...there's no comparison. I took an Oiz out one day and smashed three of my PR's on pedally XC sections without even trying. So...it's all relative!

    • @willbros1499
      @willbros1499 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're going to be doing mostly XC style riding with small jumps and drops, and you know you aren't going to venture into more gnar...then Ripley. It really ALL comes down to the style of riding you intend to do.

    Hey JC - thanks for your vids. Used to ride all your trails years ago but now Denver boy. So with your personal Ripley have you tried the 140mm Pike or just stuck to the 130mm. And is the Deluxe shock that much better than the DPS and worth the switch? Thanks for your input/thoughts.

    • @jctrails
      @jctrails  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tom Chanin I have tried the 140 air shaft. It makes the bike feel a touch more capable, it stills pedals extremely well. I like the 130 better for my local XC trails thought it feels a little bit snappier. If I lived in Denver though I would definitely put the 140 shaft in. As for the deluxe shock if your looking for better small bump sensitivity the deluxe is a touch better. Not really worth buying a new shock though.

    Did you find that your weight ever wanted to overwhelm the DPS shock or fox 34? I am 185 + with pads and pack. I am strongly considering switching to the Ripley from my Ripmo, but I worry that A, heavier riders will not get the same "pop" from the DPS that lighter riders rave about, and that B, the fork will be noticibly more flexy than the 36.
    Also, great review!

      Thanks! It seem that the fork and shock handled my weight fine. I’m sure if you start doing some double black trails at speed you will overwhelm the suspension but the bike is not really designed for that kind of trail.

      JC TRAILS thanks so much man I’m 5’9.5 no shoes and a 33 inch inseam and a 6 foot wing span and I’m trying to decided between a large or a medium 2019 5010. 27.5 + I’m in New England it would be my do everything trail bike. Any opinions or suggestions, I would really appreciate! Appreciate your time and your content!
