In my opinion one of the most iconic All Blacks sides, and the most iconic All Blacks jersey.
This style of shirt far better than the modern ones for bodies like mine. Skinny with a beer belly.
Anton Nzl Yep! I got one of them. Still got it
Yep, probably my favourite AB team
I'm a Bok supporter and in 2001 I bought Zinzan's AB Jersey at a fund raiser in Johannesburg. John Eales, Francois Pienaar and Zinzan Brooke were there as hosts. His jersey is proudly displayed next to a few Springbok jerseys in my house - it is an honour to be the custodian of one of the all time great All Blacks player's jersey.
Yeah, the players were smaller back then-Frank Bunce, for example-but super tough and committed.
I love that the players sort things out on the pitch rather than the TMO. I wish rugby would bring back these rules. Great match, great players absolutely wonderful to watch. 100% entertainment!
My NZ parents went on this tour in 1996, they still rave about it..especially the hospitality of the rugby mad hosts. I hope the proper tours come back and I can do the same one day
Thankfully they came at the right time. Not much fun these days.
Do you remember at what time begun the match ?
Zinzan was an absolute Legend - loved watching him play as a diehard Bok fan
Alec Castro same, I remember him getting a drop kick from the half way line against us.
One of the best rugby players ever. Zinzan. Legend. Have u ever seen an 8th man put over a drop kick from near half way, on the angle, too?? Nah. Zinnie greatest.
A Legend Packed match, some of the greatest names in NZ rugby. I don’t think we’ve had loosies like it since. The pace was incredible. Scrums took about 10 seconds to set, real rucking, hardest tackling… awesome stuff!
..and nobody had ever heard of the hideous Jacinda. Talking of all thing,s lockdown I watched Lions SA tests last year and it was truly awful. Not sure if it's the rules, the cult of sefetyism,or the lack of ambition on behalf of the players/management but the game has definitely regressed.
@@harryf1ashmancan't stand that bitch Jacinda.
Richie McCaw.
What a glorious era for the All Blacks and the Springboks. My respect goes to both teams for delivering wonderful matches in what was only the beginning of professionalism. Here we are in 2019, and these games are timeless.
😂😂
Yeah, not many blacks in the SA side, or didn't you care>?
This one game paved the way for the professional domination of rugby! No other sports team has ever done so
bring back the old tours! I reckon that if the rugby public of NZ and SA were asked if they would prefer the rugby championship or 3 or 4 test match tours with midweek games, the vote would be overwhelmingly in favour of the tours...I think the rugby championship is getting stale and repetitive....Who's with me?....As far as the profitability of this goes, i'm not sure how it would work out but I would be glued to both the tests and the mid week games and I think everyone else would be too.
Not only South Africa & New Zealand but Australia as well
I hear ya!!
Me brother miss the tours brings back the rivalry the rugby championship does not
Yep I agree bring them back.
This series was the end of a era as this was the last of the old school tours
Iconic rivalries, epitome of the greatest game
This was the greatest moment in NZ rugby history. Beating the mighty Boks at home, what an accomplishment for us and what a rivalry between two awesome teams. May the great games continue forever between these two rugby playing nations.
As a Big Springbok supporter we love and support the All Blacks just as much.If we cannot be the very best then the AB must be the best...
@@francogallo1043 That's very generous Franco. As a New Zealander I would like to reply by saying that I've found All Blacks v Springboks encounters to be truly special, ever since I watched Dawie de Villiers' Bok team win the series 3-1 back in 1970, and I have the very greatest respect for South African rugby. Danie Gerber is the greatest player I have ever seen. Please take care and stay safe my friend.
@david10101961 Danie Gerber, definitely. Agreed. Saw him play often here. Roy b, CapeTown south africa 🇿🇦
@david101019but Danie Gerber didnt play enough tests to be considered great only like 20 odd tests.
RIP Joost
RIP RUBEN first then JOOST
Such as tragedy. A truly great world rugby player. RIP from NZ.
Including the 95 RWC, the 1996 test series have to be amongst some of the most brutal tests in international test history. Outstanding rivalry and competitiveness.
Agreed - 1970 series was right up there as one of the roughest as well. Fergie McCormick's punch up with Syd Nomis
No SA v NZ in 1976 was worse and the Cavaliers tour of SA in 1986 was the worst ever especially against Natal
@@Sportsfan1042 The level of skill and physicality on display here is on a different level I think. But players were physically better trained and bigger and stronger by this stage.
@@JimChap but I think they were tougher back in the days which makes up for it players these days never worked a day in their life unlike players in the past who were farmers, coal miners etc remember rugby was pro at this stage
@@JimChap players like Grant Batty,Keith Murdoch,Kevin Skinner,Bernie Fraser,Buck Shelford etc etc etc i would back them to beat any rugby players these days if it came to fighting and players like Keith Murdoch were the biggest thugs in rugby history he's what you call brutal makes Etzabeth look like a choirboy
God I love the test matches against these two great sides.
This is the greatest moment in All Black history. World cups come second. I still get tears watching the final minute.
a classic series and a great advertisement for classic old tours
Do you remember what Time was it in Newzealand during the match ?
@@julesbml4603 Yes approximately 1:00am sunday morning
nope, World Cups still trump a tour match
Sorry bud World cups come first
I watched all four matches as the last tri nations match butted up against the tour , I was 19 at the time. I was fortunate my folks had Sky and it was the days when I used to set the alarm and get up at 3am to watch the matches because recording it om VHS wasn't that great and I was worried something would go wrong LOL , Now a days I have Foxtel HD I just watch it the next day. Still the greatest forward pack I have ever watched since 1992 (when I started watching Rugby) , even better than now because Dowd , Brown and Fitzpatrick were the greatest front row in the world in 1996 and I cannot say that for the current AB front now.
TheForge10
awesome story bro
There were 5 test matches between the ABs and Boks in 1996. The first 2 were tri-nations matches and last 3 a test series. The ABs won 4 of the 5 matches and were clearly the best team throughout. It took nearly 70 years for the ABs to win a series in SA but it was well deserved with Jeff Wilson and Zinzan Brooke playing big roles.
That's only because of SA refs this was the first series in SA that had a neutral ref and NZ won.
Any game 'tween these two is always a classic, thanks for the memories guys
Bring back tours & playing test matches in the afternoon.
3 Test Tours and the respective Hemisphere championship once every four years would be something I would like to see.
Our politics ,economy in S.Africa is in a complete mess and the only thing that gives us hope in South Africa is the rugby that is reasonably well managed at the moment..We are very proud of our guys who do try there best to keep our spirits lifted...
It’s time for you to make your move. You can’t pin your hopes on the temporary euphoria that a rugby win provides.
Watched this in the Castle pub ( saffa pub) in Shepard’s bush ,London with loads of Saffas and Kiwis. Legendary day.
Michael Jones was incredible on defence. Olo Brown was immense. Preston incredible kicking. Bunces’ all round game immense. Goldie out wide.
Boks also great play.
This was a great series between two great rival teams that love to play the game hard, and respect each other for playing that way.
Classic French ref: "Shut up please". Got to love him....
Thought was the only one who heard that....hehe
I have watched this many and many a times as I never ever get sick of watching it. To me I get emotional and excited as though it's happening now and not in the past. The sweat, blood, tears, riots, racism, division, losses, victories, good, bad and great rugby heroes from 1905 up till then and now 2022 all go into this most Significant and Crucial moment in history. This team did something that no other All Black team had ever done. This was easily one of the most brutal, brilliant and fast paced games ever. The Significance of this game takes presidence over all victories and titles or world cup glories.
- The ghost of not having won a series in South Africa was finally put to rest once and for all.
- It marked the end of the tours and the beginning of the Professional Era.
- It was the first time we went ahead in the win/loss count to make it 22 wins -21 losses -3 draws.
- we got 3 consecutive wins on South African soil with this Victory
Lots of words to digest there. Here's 3 of mine - NZ in decline.
Remember this game very well both sides had legends I remember where I watched it at the sin bin in takapuna everybody had tears at the end of the game 🖒🖒🖒
I remember this because i watched it in prison 😁.
Thank God I was able to listen to SA comentary when I watched this live. These Kiwis aren't biased at all! Insufferable.
Great game. So happy there are on youtube many glorious Test games. Just one thing - whoever will one day upload 2003 Tri nations Test game SA v NZ at Loftus will be declared a saint and all his sins will be forgiven - I can't believe there ain't even highlights ... anywhere., nevermind full game. That was one of the greatest demonstration of skill and pace I have ever seen.
Please, someone, do the right thing. :)
who cares I know the game. Where is it !!!
Great rivalry these two teams have. Great names on both sides.
awesome! I've looked for this match in the past so happy to see it up, thanks!
This game was far better than the 2023 World Cup final. Nevermind the result, just an incredible game.
And 1995 world cup final.
The best 2 teams in Rugby Union.
What a game - two great teams going at it. How the game has changed.
I doubt there’ll ever be a fullback as good as Christian Cullen.
Absolute vintage stuff. Some great players here.
Did you count the SA blacks, matey?
Jeff Wilson was magic back then..The skills that man had...
Anyone notice how the charming Jaapies just buggered off at the final whistle. Not a single AB hand shaken. Lovely boys.
Probably something to do with the blatant cheating at 1.33.56. Where Joost was tackled by a player who was about 2 metres from the spot where the penalty was given.
Fitzpartrick recounted that bit of poor sportsmanship with such fondness in an interview I have seen. Cuts both ways.
lol a sth africunt supporter whining about poor sportsmanship. The springrolls are one of the dirtiest cheating sides of all time so go cry somewhere else loser
Check out Mark Andrews behaviour after the final whistle. What a sore loser, Arrogant Prick!
Mark Andrews.... hmmmm hmmmm...
@Incomplete6230 Now try saying it without crying
RIP 💜 Joost... brilliant scrum half.. also fantastic to see Mark Andrews. Haka beautiful as always 🖤🖤🖤
The final frontier for Fitzpatrick ..first series win in SA .I remember watching this Epic .
I'm no All Black fan by any means but I must admit they have always been a force to be reckoned with and I love the national anthem as well.
We South Africans have a very nice anthem too.
I don't like our anthem SA is better
Big players Big men something we dont see in this world nowwadays tough both physically and mentally
Classic. That little French referee yelling at everyone amusing too: "listen to me!Straight!Up!Up!"
and shoving both sides' props into place!
Jon Preston you fu#k'en beauty. I had almost forgotten how awesome wellington was when you played.
The Cleaner!
I saw him in one of the few video stores still operating in NZ, in Dunedin in 2015, he was high performance coach with the Highlanders then.
The kid at the counter asked him for his name and I.D because he didn't have his membership card.
When he'd finished the transaction I stopped him with my hand out to shake his, I said I had watched that game in 96 at Loftus where they clinched and won the series on SA soil for the first time.
He shook my hand and smiled at the memory I guess, and walked off.
The best game of rugby I've ever seen, the desperation of both sides was just incredible.
Great team and memorable occasion still.
As a kiwi, I love and admire the Springboks, but they never had a Jeff Wilson or a Christian Cullen....
This is so much better than what is being played these days. Huge knock on at 18:36 but who cares.
Thank you so much for this.
That NZ commentator; he's still doing it today. What a great service to the NZ rugby public.
Phew what a match - two great teams.
Still have that AB shirt when they came to the UK. A Classic & best. Good old fashioned Black Mizuno boots
What strikes me here is what outstanding looking athletes both teams are. This was prior to players turning themselves into giants in the gym and the kitchen. These players were naturally big men.
Yup. Kirwan was a huge winger back in those days.
Now he would be smaller than I am and I'm not even big for a gym bunny.
Guys have got so big and slow
@@willliam1343 That all look great. Genuinely big athletic players of their time. Reflecting back, rugby had a lot going for it in the amateur/early pro era. Games just evolve and we just have to accept that rugby has become (and will remain) a game for big powerful athletes who get individualised strength and conditioning programmes.
All blacks play offside for dedecades
All blacks offside
Bokke are tops
Sean Fitzpatrick is for me the greatest AB ever. Tough, resilient, uncompromising, and a true gentleman
He’s no Keith Wood though👍
Though I loved Sean too, only until Richie! The greatest player ever, from any nation.
@@ciaranmac646 Your right, Keith Wood's doesn't have a WC
@@toiletsmithy3630 I was in his house last year.... he's got four WCs
@@damianmorris5170 Oh yeah. Dead right Richie was the greatest.
Rugby is always brutal, but it was much more brutal in the 1990s than it is now.
More brutal in the 80s.
When I hear what was happening behind the scenes (huge amount of fighting between them and SA Rugby Union and Louis Luyt etc., and constant distractions from match preparations etc.) with the Springbok teams of that era, I am saddened by the fact that we never really saw them play to their potential. Would have made the Springbok/All Blacks contest alot more enticing and exciting.
Difference in AB Teams over 20 years - less pushed passes in favour of retaining possession and resetting plays, improved clean outs, better ball players & skills across all positions.
Yuyyyhhhnnnnn
The massive change in rules had a lot to with that, the game in way more cleaner now
Always amazed me how heavy the shoulder pads the Boks wore, like NFL gear! Must have been a generous doctors note they go!
This was one of the greatest All Black sides...Bunce, Little, Zinzan, Michael Jones, Cullen, Osborne.. Boks were a shadow of the 95 side but were better in 97 and invincible in 98
love the baggy jerseys and collars. A time when the player cut his sleeves off, look at some of the players the sleeves are cut uneven.
Proper rugby jerseys
The props used to cut their outside sleeves short so their opposite number could not pull them.
Got a couple of old school ab and springbok jumpers myself they still in good nick😃😃
South Africa; the All Blacks arch nemesis!
Superni Ue They used to be, and when they came to NZ on tours, it was a world-stopping event and no one was confident of winning against them - it took until 1956 to win a Test series against them.
Now, in the modern saturation-rugby era, the Springboks are just another team the All Blacks play year after year.
MarsFKA you're right. And SA are not what they used to be, too.
Paula Wells - now its the reverse. But I dont hear u complaining.
Hey thank you for posting up this classic test match. Do you have the 1997 test matches of the All blacks and the Springboks?
The All Blacks greatest victory.
World Cup wins are great.
But beating the Springboks in a series in South Africa is our greatest victory.
What great team.
“ just over 20 degrees- maybe 25 degrees “ - Ha Ha - makes the BBC look like professionals
That was a fantastic all blacks side. Cheers from cape town. And no TMO lovely
By jingos, the fringing offside play by the yarpies at the rucks! Should have been whistled out of it for the whole game.
"Yarpies" hahaha!
They always bend and break the rules... every game.
Has there ever been a better All Black front row than Brown, Dowd and Fitzpatrick? Nobody pushed that scrum around!
Yep They were pretty good alright but the front row before was Arguably even scarier Richard Loe, Fitzpatrick,Steve McDowell. Loe was the strongman intimidator, McDowall was the silent assassin and maybe the best running prop the All Blacks have ever had, and then you have Fitzpatrick who was the young bull and learnt the Dark arts off Loe and McDowell and in turn taught brown and Dowd.
@@sonnyblack6121 Great front row.....well both of those front rows. Yes Loe, Fitzy and McDowell would be ever so marginally ahead of this games front row due to the intimidation factor. Brown could possibly be the technically best tighthead scrummager ever but Loey, by no means a poor technical tighthead scrummager, could often best his opposite through sheer power! I recall the AB's playing him at loosehead for a few tests, his technique was terrible but his strength was evident.
Knight, Ashworth and Dalton were another great front row. Knight was huge and a terribly strong scrummager though not an enforcer; Ashworth was underrated and filthy without being a noted stand over guy; Dalton was another underrated player and captain. Cowboy Shaw and Frank Oliver did the tough guy stuff back then.
@@sonnyblack6121 ,McDowell is still my favourite prop
How the whole crowd got into it when the anthem got to Die Stem... definitely different times indeed. The players were like "Finally, I know the words!" lol. Great AB side.
If SA was blessed as NZ is with a stable political and economic environment that nurtures talent the bokke would be the best by far...
Dont know so much,,,how about if aussie nz and Britain didnt play league, think if all the talent available,,,,,go check out Shaun Johnson playin for the kiwis and imaging him playing 1st or 2nd 5 8ths in the all blacks
Another pathetic SA excuse, you cant blame quotas for this game so u gotta blame something else.
@@floydkingi4364 if you lived in SA you wouldn’t say that
@@MrLute101 SA were beaten in a series twice in two years by New Zealand 94 and 96, no quotas, no excuses, best by far, I dont think so!
@@floydkingi4364 yes but they were inexperienced not playing internationals for years.
Boks are in the pressure cooker , trying to passing the ball like hot potatoes! Broke my heart to watch !😢😢😢
1:02:28 This is how refs should do it!
This was WAR not a rugby match. I think TMO messed up the beautiful game. Neck tackles flying left right and center awesome
Anyone know who did commentary alongside Keith Quinn?
Grant Nisbett
@@EllliotJackRussel1 I'm not sure it's Nisbo. Wrong kinda voice. I thought first Matt Cooper, but he was still playing then. I think an ex-ab, from a couple of years prior, a young Grant Fox??

@@EllliotJackRussel1 I bow to your superior knowledge, thank you for the reply 😁👍
Grant Nisbett and Bernie Mccahill (ex AB)
A test series against South Africa for any All Black is the ultimate. Lions series comes second, World Cup comes 3rd.
Lion's Series comes 1st
@@toiletsmithy3630 absolutely not.You obviously don't understand the History involved between the 2 heavyweights of World rugby.
17:20...."Joel Stransky was something of a villain last week".... Excuse Me Grant Nisbett, you referring to Our National Hero World Cup Winner there, mate. Could never be more wrong.
Quality upload thanks:classic game
Simon Calhane was the smartest All Black 1st five since Grant Fox.
Bokks beat all blacks 1970 and 1976 again great boks
Forward pass in this test by AB
1:15:50 I remember Jon Preston coming out to kick this goal CooL as ice 👉
Bok rugby has never been sophisticated. They have had just one tactic over the years; physical domination and intimidation. If you stand up to them and maintain physical parity, you win. If not, they win. Simple as that. That's what the Lions did in '74 and it's what has happened increasingly frequently in the professional era. Neutral referees and video replays have also played a part.
This has sucked a lot of the air out of SA rugby. There are now superb physical specimens all over the rugby world and SA are no longer bigger, stronger and more violent than their opponents. It's a different world, now.
Who are the current World Champions again?
Did something right in the latest World Cup?
True but you have to wonder why England screwed up the final then, both of them 😀
That is the style of rugby that we have been taught from school level in S.Africa and it works for us..Catch up the rest of the rugby playing world we are very patient guys and we are prepared to teach you guys how to play rugby properly..
Are you dreaming..The Boks can match the best teams in the world..The Covid cut us off our rugby and we still came back to teach you guys how to play. rugby..
Stransky so reliable in the World Cup the year before....
Yeah, great... Sean Fitzpatrick. Fiery atmosphere 🖤🖤🖤
tremendous level of professionalism barely 8 months into the professional era. Teams like NZ and SA adapted so much more quickly to pro rugby.
geansai333 yeah but dont forget the NH nations had been professional for decades before SA , NZ and Aus.
TheForge10
where on earth did you get that idea.
Have a look at any match programme pre 95. You won't see any kiwi's with standard jobs, but all 'sports related' jobs. With the exception of france maybe, european teams all had to go back to their day jobs on mondays.
geansai333 mate rugby wasn't professional pre 1996 ,it was all amateur . What world do you live on ??????.
TheForge10
officially yes
+TheForge10 New Zealand were professional way before any other country, it was well known. All they did was hide it.
What a win. Especially since we were humiliated 4-0 in 1949. Ho ho great moment for the All Blacks.
look at the end of the game how most of the Boks walked off not even shaking hands. Bad losers lol
Oh, I dunno. The All Blacks did fuck around at the end there.
Good! let em take their molded behinds back to the sheds.
Two things as a 11 year old South African at the time I remember was how insane South African rugby politics were in 1996 (a real low point for our rugby) and how taken aback South Africa was with the dirty nature of the New Zealanders. Lots of dark arts. But it worked for them.
RIP Joost and Ruben - taken far too early
Growing up in NZ and playing as a number 7, I always tried to play like Kruger, ( and Jones, Kronfeld!). Kruger was so good at the breakdown. Both, such a loss for the game of rugby.
Didn't realize Ruben Kruger had passed on......awesome player, hard man.
Mehrtens was scared of Kruger.
@FOMO FUD I remembee growing up in nz and all the NZ rugby would say it. If you have a look at mehrtens record when kruger was playing it was bad so it was good having Simon culhane play those test because culhane was a tough five eight.
@FOMO FUD yes Carlos Spencer was the man. My favourite springbok ever was the great Bobby Skinstead.
Andrew Merhtens..what an All Blacks side 💥💥
For that team to win series in South Africa for the first time. It really meant alot after the loss on the final in '95. Fantastic series... I believe it ended up 3-1 to the all blacks... we just run out of puff.
actually 2 - 1. Yes we played 4 tests but the first test was still part of the Tri Nations so it didn't count as part of the series which followed immediately after the Tri Nations match
@@darrenormsby3034 yeah mate, I meant that year 3-1 all blacks. I guess these days not many teams could or ever do that again to a world champ side holding the cup.... and do it on home soil.
@ Sweet Azz 1997 yeah bro. What a team that was
wheres Jonah?
One tour each. Bring back the tours but will never happen. NZ have been so dominant this record wouldn't have lasted much longer anyway.
I'm a bit confused to see the old South African flag used, this was after 1995 world cup.
Where in Australia are New Zealand from ?
NZ is a country
Love the biased comments
Flirting with the offside line is an AB speciality
Fitzpatrick will be remembered for his constant winging to the ref
Talk about jaapies not shaking AB hands
The lack of good grace by the AB after 1995 World Cup after being fairly beaten by a team who wanted it just a little more than the AB will be rembered for along time
Really? Both teams played hard that day.. however the result was a win for the All Blacks. Some of my favorite all time players would still be in a top all black team. They were too good for the green machine. Remember AB's were hurting the year before so it all kind of balanced out.
seriously. the Boks were offside at every ruck. Head high tackles and ungracious losers. Good grace after the 95 World Cup you say!!! They were food poisoned by god knows who. Was it the bookies or Saffas wanting it to be a great occasion for Mandella. Players were vomiting on the sidelines during that final. What a fuckwit thing to say. Fuck you yarpies are sore losers. You only have to look at all the oranges that were thrown at All Blacks players in the corner after the final whistle. Thats low!!!
@John Ritchie waaah waaah waaah waaah......
John Ritchie the 95 world cup should of been france and nz if you want to talk about flirting with offside and collapse srums
@@darrenormsby3034 Better get your handbag out then
world rugby needs the boks on top form again
The All Blacks need to be with us Boks right at the top again...
As Bill Lawrie famously said "The greatest day in history on the planet ever" LoL
Who won the world cup held in South Africa in the 1990s?
Roh P, Boks. This a joke ? Surely you know.
Yeah. Thanks Uploader.
Never forget it!! ALL BLACK!!
Wow lThe old foe.. legends on both Teams
2 forward passes in All Blacks 1st try . The one that Ian Jones received was nearly behind the posts it was forward lol
Jeremy Merrifield yes it was just like the SA try in the third test that year
Keep crying hahahahaha
Fun fact... This was also the first test series in SA to have neutral referees... That is Non South African....
Hence why their record isn't so great since neutral referees says something about their refs before doesn't it
Wilson is still better than most wingers today
No Lomu or Merthens for the ABs in this match.
Weren't they both injured? I don't think Jonah played any of the tests in South Africa.....I could be wrong.
is it me or the players back then look smaller than the ones now or is it just the quality of the TV?
asking cause for some reason those players back then, where on the field to play and have fun.
What dumb question is that? You know the answer.
