    As a Ireland man.
    I had a soft spot for this England team when I was a kid. Class players in Johnson, Greenwood, Robinson, Cohen and especially Jonny Wilkinson was awesome to watch I use to practice after school pretending I was Jonny Wilkinson’s

    how nice to see proper scrums. and high tackles not being penalised constantly.

      yeah very nice high tackles. the players getting concussions and problems later on in their lifes must also like it a lot.

    Great game to watch from an Aussie. England clearly dominated for vast lengths of time but set themselves back with Wilkinson slipping which let flatley score, a snatch and grab try to sailor and a flatley runaway from a rickety ruck. The oz team back then used to regularly stay in games by snatching and grabbing at tries like that!

    Wow. Great match. I love these 30-minute highlight shows - it's almost like seeing the whole game, but with some of the boring bits cut out. The only thing I felt was missing was the lead-up to Australia's first try.

    I miss these days. England went into every match believing they would win, and they almost always did. Our players weren't amazingly brilliant for the most part - just good, intelligent, committed and well coached. Everyone knew their role, played it well, and the team virtually picked itself. None of the constant chopping and changing that has blighted our squad since then.
    Classic match, could have gone either way. What an autumn this was!

    • @billbonnington7916
      @billbonnington7916 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know your comment is 5 years old, but here goes anyway. Our players weren't amazingly brilliant? Of this team, Robinson, Johnson, Wilkinson, Hill, Back, Dallaglio, Cohen, Greenwood, Vickery, Thompson, Dawson, were all world class players probably better than anyone in their positions at the time. Australia were no mean team and current world champions at the time. This was one of the top 3 sides the world has seen in my humble and most likely somewhat biased opinion.
      The week before we beat NZ in NZ, to a scoreline that flattered NZ (Howlett's offside try being the points in question).

    • @kabukiman1981
      @kabukiman1981 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say Dallaglio, Hill, Johnson, Vickery, Thompson, Robinson and obviously wilko were the best in the world in their positions. Five in the pack, lol.

    • @St_AngusYoung

      Tom Alexander during that era those players and that unit were the best. That team scalped the 3 SH powers in consecutive weeks and then a few months later would lift the Webb Ellis cup on Australian soil. They were a great side and deserved all the success they had.

    I remember how happy I was during this time, England finally had a team. Watching now, I am reminded how good Australia was. Half of the Aussie team are legendary giants of the game. Little sad, strangely more for AUS than ENG at how much they have come down.

    Blimey what a match - I'd forgotten how close it was and I can't remember if I was there - at home or in a pub. 16 years ago where did they all go to - I had only retired from rugby myself the year before after playing for 33 years since I was very young. Thanks for post.

      @@NuisanceMan Well yes and no. I have all my limbs but my back can be a bit of a nightmare some days.
      I played in a veterans match in November 2000 and the oppositions full back was a certain John Gallagher. At 36 he was past his best but I'll never forget the payback tackle he gave me after I tackled him.

    I was at that game. Top game and very entertaining. They'd be the 2003 Final teams the following year. 32-31 that game and extra time in the 03 RWC Final.....close close stuff albeit England a bit better.

    The last era before mass bodybuilding and mass substitutions for players that can't last 80 minutes because of their muscle mass. Bring back limited substitutions and we'll see less injuries and more matches like this!

    • @davidrowe6339
      @davidrowe6339 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Robinson's pace was about acceleration and changes of direction, not straight-line speed. Flatley was quick, Howlett was lightning.

  • @forsoup
    @forsoup 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Blimey, you only have to watch 2 minutes of this to realise the differences between this England team and the current RWC 2011 England team.
    For Cohen's try, they had an inside centre who could break the gain line, the forwards cleared the ruck quickly, the scrum half does not take a step- just passes the ball, and the runners come from depth and run straight direct lines.
    It is a simple game when played correctly.
    George Gregan and Matt Dawson- such a fantastic pair of fast passers.

  • @Raichu234
    @Raichu234 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why has the ref not blown after 80 mins. How can you have 6 mins over unless it is a full penalty and it was kicked out several times!

    • @NuclearCraftMod
      @NuclearCraftMod 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just in case you're still curious, back then, there was 'injury time' similar to that in football - the game ending on 80 mins was introduced the next year.
