If I'd have been coach I'd have got both into the team somehow. Today, of course, the substitution rules would allow both to figure in every Irish test match. If only those rules had applied then.
Yes absolutely ridiculous. Pollard has 2 RWC's to his name and was instrumental to SA winning the 2023 RWC, if he missed a single of his 14 kicks SA would have lost. Morne is statistically the best kicker in rugby history, holding the record for the most consecutive successful kicks in international rugby at 48, and he kicked the winning penalties in the 2009 and 2021 British and Irish Lions series as well as many other accolades. Can't help but think this is really "the top 10 greatest northern hemisphere fly half plus a couple of others we've heard of, and Johnny Sexton" list. Recently the Irish team have had a forward pack that either dominates or competes with the best of the others, talented back line, and yet they can't even make semi finals of a World Cup. That should take Seton out, and I expect if this list was repeated in a couple of years time, he won't even make the honorably mentioned list. And Jonathan Davies, never beat the All Blacks in a Welsh shirt being at number 4? And being called a "legendary commentator" when he spouts biased nonsense that doesn't match what is actually happening on the field? It's a shame you haven't seen Mark Ella, or the Ella brothers together. They could be poetry in motion. I'm not sure how much of them is on TH-cam, but they do live in my memory, even though I'm a NZer. Fully support any South African who thinks this is a poor excuse for a top 10, particularly since SA have won more World Cups than any other team despite not featuring in the first.
As a South African, Beauden should be far higher up on the list, and Naas Botha shouldn't be there. The Welsh players should not be there either, and Sexton should be at the back end, behind Farrell and Pollard, Pollard should at least be top 5 and as much as I sometimes dislike him, Farrell outplayed Pollard in the 2023 Semi-Final and is an excellent player
Sometimes I wonder what they put in the water in SA, ya’ll say such outlandish things sometimes. Both Pollard and Faf were probably not even top 5 in the world in their positions during both WCs, but they slotted into the SA game plan perfectly. And world cups don’t mean as much as you seem to think they do. They are bragging rights, but still a ko competition where anyone can win on their day, SA have managed to do it 4 times, which is impressive, but thankfully it really isn’t the be all and end all of rugby.
Love Jiffy to bits but Bennett was a more complete flyhalf and tough competitor 2 grand slams and 1974 lions tour I would have placed in 4th and given honourable mention to Jiffy tough choices! like the list overall!
Glad to have Andrew Merhtens mentioned. Shouldve included Carlos Spencer, despite that he didnt have the tactical awareness of Fox and Merhts, he was the most mecurial fly half in international footy.
I've seen many of the fly halves on this list. The main criterion for me is the impact they were able to make on a game and no one was better than Naas Botha.
He’s above Wilkinson imho. Hes the best kicker of a rugby ball (across all disciplines) the game has seen. It’s only kicking that gets JW high on these lists, and Naas was better - I swear I’ve seen footage of him hit a dropkick over his own head backwards
Glad to see Grant Fox there - a totally underrated player who scored a very high points to match ratio - and this was in the days where goal kicking was much harder due to the leather ball sometimes getting wet in rain and other challenges that came with playing back then!
@@bernettmurray Wilkinson could tackle and he could kick. He couldn't score tries or get his team scoring them. Sport is supposed to be entertaining.... watching Wilkinson play was about as entertaining as polishing your cutlery.

Sorry guys, but Barry John will be always in the conversation for the GOAT on the same level with DC and Wilkinson AND WILL NEVER BE BEHIND jonathan Davis… Also I believe that the other King, King Carlos Spencer, should at least deserve a nomination
For me its Dan the Man and then Wilko. That was once hard to say. As a Kiwi i wasnt really allowed to like anything English except their football team. But that Wilkinson could play. We heard all the bluster and awaited the reality check when we played England on the end of year tour. One nil Johnny. Then they bulit a team around him. Yes, all the pieces were in place but he still HAD TO deliver or they lose. He delivered. Towards the end of his career we started hearing from ex ABs who went North to play. All of them talking about him as a teammate. As a professional. As a winner, period. Then at the 2011 WC... While everyone was getting stuck into the English side.. all i saw was a legend of the game throwing everything he had into every minute he got. We could say he wouldve been the best ever had he been from NZ. Thats not me being arrogant. Thats reality. At 9, 12 and 13 we just had far better options. Throw in our fullbacks to compliment anything Wilko wanted to try.... Wouldve been unreal imo. But thats hypothetical. Reality tells us it was Carter who had that career. Its there on film, so hes the GOAT. But ssk him whos his fav 10. When the cameras arent rolling. I have. And its Wilko by a mile.
In all these kinds of top something the French are just underrepresented. Even get double spite with argentinians or italians getting credits ! So be it.
I totally agree. And you may have noticed, whenever they have to aknowledge some French preeminence (like, say, Dupont, or Sella, or Blanco …), it hurts those guys so much that behind the smile of their appreciation, they seem to have a stick thrust in their ass. By the way how come Lamaison does not appear in this list ? he simply pulled the best game ever for a fly half at the very highest level. Ask the All Blacks.
Beuden needs to be higher. his only weakness is goal kicking BUT he is by far the best defender and by far the best offensive weapon and much better at creating space and opportunities for teammates, his kicking game offensively is better too. he's maxed out every stat but goal kicking. his other kicking game is elite too.
Great list up until 2018 You obviously didn’t get to analyse the only fly half in history of the game to play in 2 RWC finals and win them both. His name is Handré Pollard. Dan Carter didn’t play in 2011 knockouts he only played in 2015. What an opportunity for you to update your list now that we are in 2024.
This definitely shows the contrast of Rugby. What constitutes a good flyhalf? In the NH and South Africa all #10's are known as just tactical kickers, whereas in Aus and NZ there's a massive emphasis placed on ball playing. Nobody on this list can put their outside men through holes with their passing game like Larkham and Carter.
I feel honoured to have been born in the right era to be able to follow the entire careers of almost all 10 of these wonderful players. Only Barry John, where I caught the latter half of his career, was I not able to watch in it's entirety.
Carlos Spencer was number 2 behind Carter, then Boden Barrett. Then Morunga I dont know about fox, he never scored a try in test rugby, you might think im one eyed but this selection is worse..😅😊😂
Generally good list but this is a bit harsh on Mark Ella. In terms of how much he has shaped the role of the fly-half, he is a Top 3 player. Yes, we only saw him for a handful of years (the reason given for him not being in the Top 10 in the video) but he had 25 caps. Botha only had 28 and John 30 (25 Wales and 5 Lions).
Typically English centric putting Wilkinson in at 2. Even Matt Dawson isn't that complimentary! For his kicking game & defence probably 7 or 8. Barry John, given the title 'King' by the Kiwis, below Davies? .... give me strength

I was frustrated to see Ward left out of the Irish side so often, though. It felt criminal that such genius was denied. At the time I felt he was the best all-round fly-half in the world. If I'd have been coach I'd have got both into the team somehow. Today, of course, the substitution rules would allow both to figure in every Irish test match. If only those rules had applied then.
Pollard, Steyn and Mehrtens ...... seriously ....but you do have some dude who played a whopping 25 test matches for Wales ....takin' the piss
Beauden should also be far higher up the list with a RWC and 2 player of the year awards. In my opinion no flyhalf should be above one who has a RWC to his name. Those Welsh players should be nowhere near this list and Sexton should be at the end.
@@damianlangman5381 this video list is a farce, created by someone who hasn’t quite figured out what a world class flyhalf is!
You clearly know nothing about rugby. You do know it was played before you were born, before it became professional?
@@Anonymous-xl9pq You are trying to either claim that the fly half won RWCs single handed, or that they should benefit in this list from playing in a very successful team. Neither makes any sense.
😂 indeed I am aware that rugby was played before it was professional, I'm just not foolish enough to think that the amateur era compares in any way to the professional era @@PeerAdder
Just fast forwarded to the end to check if Carter was at #1. We good
😂😂😂
HUGO PORTA
Finn Russell should be on that list
South Africa number 10. The dude that made sure SA wins RWC 2 in a row. I will put him in any number from 1-3.
Anywhere but 1. He's no where near Carter
Dam right D.C the best .. proof says it all ..
Salt 🧂
Sometimes I wonder what they put in the water in SA, ya’ll say such outlandish things sometimes. Both Pollard and Faf were probably not even top 5 in the world in their positions during both WCs, but they slotted into the SA game plan perfectly. And world cups don’t mean as much as you seem to think they do. They are bragging rights, but still a ko competition where anyone can win on their day, SA have managed to do it 4 times, which is impressive, but thankfully it really isn’t the be all and end all of rugby.
You seem fun
British hemisphere you mean
Love Jiffy to bits but Bennett was a more complete flyhalf and tough competitor 2 grand slams and 1974 lions tour I would have placed in 4th and given honourable mention to Jiffy tough choices! like the list overall!
How is Davies so high on the list
Great player.
I agree. He was deadly.
He’s above Wilkinson imho. Hes the best kicker of a rugby ball (across all disciplines) the game has seen. It’s only kicking that gets JW high on these lists, and Naas was better - I swear I’ve seen footage of him hit a dropkick over his own head backwards
Mark Ella revolutionised the position and the game. Criminal he isn’t in the top 5
In about 5years, there’ll only be ☝️. A new GOAT. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu
Glad to see Grant Fox there - a totally underrated player who scored a very high points to match ratio - and this was in the days where goal kicking was much harder due to the leather ball sometimes getting wet in rain and other challenges that came with playing back then!
Agreed the times he pulled the Abs outta certain defeat is underestimated
Beauden Barret done dirty 😂😂
You lost me at Sexton.
Enjoyed That
Rankink Beauden Bareth at 10 is an absolute bullshit. Should be nr. 2-3. Wilkinson is nowhere near.
Wilkinson my no 1
@@bernettmurray number one in the line to polish Carter’s boots 😂
@@bernettmurray Wilkinson could tackle and he could kick. He couldn't score tries or get his team scoring them. Sport is supposed to be entertaining.... watching Wilkinson play was about as entertaining as polishing your cutlery.
True man has 2 world player of the year
I agree, barrett is a tactical magician and pretty much invented the cross kick that's so prevalent in today's game.
Wilkinson should be about five or six. He was good, not that good
Bro your video are amazing you deserve a lot of more subscribers
What about Diego Dominguez? At least as a substitute ( from position 11 to 15)
A mistifying list. Larkham at number 8? That man was a genius and should be no. 2. There are some pretty wooden and stolid players above him in your list. Mehrtens is better than many on your list. Handre Pollard too.
In terms of a running playmaking fly half. Carlos Spencer crapped all over Wilkinson.
Briljante video
Baie dankie
Yeah, Good Choices!
Never mind the players, but I do miss the commentaries of Bill McLaren & Eddie Butler.🎤
You're having a laugh with Wilkinson at no 2.
😊
Wilkinson 😂😂😂that's a good joke there.
Sorry guys, but Barry John will be always in the conversation for the GOAT on the same level with DC and Wilkinson AND WILL NEVER BE BEHIND jonathan Davis… Also I believe that the other King, King Carlos Spencer, should at least deserve a nomination
I think this is a very accurate list - your summaries of their respective careers, and the unique skill sets that they brought was first rate
Give me Phil bennet over grant fox anytime ...he was pretty ordinary. Any mediocre flyhalf would look good behind that 8os all black pack .
Spencer and Hugo Porta in place of Davies and Lynagh.
Great list up until 2018
You obviously didn’t get to analyse the only fly half in history of the game to play in 2 RWC finals and win them both.
Farrel should be 4 or 5. Achieved way more than Sexpants.
I feel honoured to have been born in the right era to be able to follow the entire careers of almost all 10 of these wonderful players. Only Barry John, where I caught the latter half of his career, was I not able to watch in it's entirety.
Any fly half can look great behind a good pack of forwards
absolutely true
I enjoyed ur recap of Welsh legends, as well as the best Pumas flyhalf Hugo Porta 🏉
It's very hard to argue against 1,2, and 3 !!
Porta is top 7 at least
You must watch a lot of Welsh rugby!
The moment you put Barrett at 10 just a red flag. Beauden deserves at least in the Top 5.
Carlos Spencer was the most exciting player to watch.....
He was exciting
Neil Jenkins should be included here. He was very underrated and scored so many points in some of worst welsh sides in living memory
I hope, one day, georgian fly half also joins these guys in greatness..
Carlos Spencer!!!
Handre Pollard GOAT
No where near
No Phil Bennett in a top 10 is sacrilege.
You've forgotten Ronan O'Gara.
Can’t argue much with that. As always, many great players miss out but this selection stands alone.
Typically English centric putting Wilkinson in at 2. Even Matt Dawson isn't that complimentary! For his kicking game & defence probably 7 or 8. Barry John, given the title 'King' by the Kiwis, below Davies? .... give me strength
You have to be crazy not mentioning morne stern 2008 2009 2011
