He lead the South American team (14 Argies, 1 Uruguayan) who played against SA, and won, when they were banned from playing international rugby. So I don't understand the "top tier" mention either...
How on earth do you choose Jonathan Davies over Phil Bennett? I'm not Welsh but Davies isn't even in the top three Welsh flyhalves and definitely not in the top 10 of all time.
Love Jiffy to bits but Bennett was a more complete flyhalf and tough competitor 2 grand slams and 1974 lions tour I would have placed in 4th and given honourable mention to Jiffy tough choices! like the list overall!
And from an older generation---Cliff Morgan, who excelled in the days when an open-side's primary mission was to destroy or at least intimidate outside halves. And the rules at the time favoured us. Break when the opposition ball was hooked, advance in-line with the ball while the scrum was still bound until you could find yourself standing opposite their outside-half, looking him in the eye! Happy days, especially in wet weather. Cliff Morgan excelled on the dry pitches of South Africa during the 1955 Lions tour. To Van Wyk's discomfort.
Youngsters today, what do they know of real rugby, played in the old days, when you were lucky to get off the pitch with all your teeth. and your studs weren't just for grip. When JPR, captaining Bridgend, nearly lost his face to an All Black boot at the bottom of a ruck in 1978 - NZ prop John Ashworth deliberately stamped on him, twice, an act which today would undoubtedly receive a red card and a long ban - requiring 30 stitches before returning to the field after 15 minutes of treatment, and Haydn Mainwaring saved two tries against the Boks in a rare Welsh win in 1961 by bulldozing the South African captain Avril Malan and then the wing Michael Antelme into touch in tackles described respectively as “like a comet burying itself into earth” and “he felled him like an ox”, tackles that today would have earned him at least a yellow card. Aye, them were the days. But you try an tell the young people of today that, and they won't believe you... More seriously though, it is extremely difficult to compare the amateur era to the professional one, especially as the game is played today. While it is essentially the same game - look at how Bristol Bears are playing it at the moment - and I have no desire to see a return to the legalised thuggery of the past (and no, the players weren't all mates in the bar afterwards, look up what happened after the Bridgend v NZ game), I do think many of the great players from the past are under-rated these days, as in the list in this video.
I think the Mainwaring-Malan game was against the Ba-Baas, the only game South Africa lost. I was at that game and close to the hit on Malan by Mainwaring in front of the South Stand. Mainwaring actually shoulder-hit Malan in the kidneys, a red card offense today. Mainwaring was a very good player at full back or centre, but not quite the best available. He was picked by the Ba Baas for that game because Terry Davies was unavailable. Unfortunately his career coincided with Davies. And I remember Ashworth stamping on JPR very well, a stud pierced JPR's cheek. When Ashworth was picked by NZ for the Ba Baas game he was booed by the crowd as he ran onto the pitch. That was something previously unthinkable for a Ba Baas fixture.@@PeerAdder

it's a personal list in a well produced video, but really not objective when wilkinson @2, of all time! - an english great, sure, but when players such as fynn russell are in the mentions, the criteria as 'greatest players' just goes out the window. thanks for sharing
All these rankings are subjective and not to take too seriously. I'm open to suggestions regarding the 2 spot but much as I like Fimn Russell I'm not sure I could rank him over Jonny Wilkinson . They played in different eras but I think back Wilkinson changed how flyhalfs played.
Ultimately it doesn't matter
