Lomu, the greatest rugby player of all time bar none. And the most exciting. I say that as an England supporter who watched in stunned disbelief as Lomu scored 4 tries against England in the semi final of the World Cup in 1995. Never before or since Lomu retired have I seen a player with his power, pace, handling ability, who could side step beautifully off either foot and most impressively, his outstanding rugby intelligence. A man who always played for the team. He will always be remembered fondly as long as this game is played.
...no question Lomu was legendary and a great player, but far from the best player of all time. There have been some stunning all-round players that rate higher as overall best. That's not to take away from the big man but things need to be kept a bit real.
I remember watching this game with my Whanau, live on TV. What an awesome display of running rugby, this is how rugby is supposed to be played. Both teams made this one of the greatest games in rugby history. Jonah Lomu, Tana Umaga, Christian Cullen, George Gregan, Stephen Larkham, Stirling Mortlock...great names from a golden era.
That was a impressive Wallaby Team and that back line was quite spectacular and always gave the All Blacks problems. Stephen Larkham is a beast. I hated when he got the ball because he was so unpredictable. And when you have one of the strongest halfbacks in the game feeding you.
I was lucky to be there on the night. Amazing atmosphere. And even though we lost, there was almost disbelief by both Aussie and Kiwi supporters alike at what we had just witnessed. The train back to the city from the stadium was an experience in itself, hakas, anthems, smiles galore, rugby!

And a great wallabies side it was, led by captain Jon Eels along with the likes of Gregan. The key difference was leadership. Both teams had great players, the all blacks at the time had a leadership crisis and didn't know how to address it, hence they picked an inspirational leader in his own rights, Todd Blackadder, but a fairly mediocre player who wasn't considered good enough to be an all black. Wind the clock forward and you'd have Ritchie MacCaw and co of the all blacks, or wind it back you'd have Sean Fitzpatrick (and Zinzan) leading the field. SInce then it seems the wallabies just don't have either the players or the leaders.
I agree, I've watched these highlights about ten times over the years and reminisce also, from the North Island I lived in ChCh in the late 90s & early 2000s, the Super 12 era. I learnt pretty quickly not to say anything bad about Andrew Mehrtons at work or you would be straight-up lynched in the lunch room!
The Wallabies were a great team back then and whooped NZ's butts so many times for years. One of the very best teams in history. Nowadays they simply don't have the players that compare to the likes of Larkham, Gregan, Eales, Roff, Kefu, Latham, and Mortlock. Look at how they come back from 21 points down in the first five minutes - that shows the typical attitude of a group of Aussie fighters that didn't give up. Respect from a NZ fan.
Actually they didn't Whoop our butts many times. They would generally beat us once a year during the Tri nations, after they won the Bledisloe Cup they changed it to a 2 game format. Have to win both to win the cup. Sadly it was always 50/50 split. However, it has been 17 years since Australia has last held it, at the end of 2020 it will be 18. The All Blacks and Australia have met 165 times. During that time Australia has won 44. There have been 7 draws, And New Zealand have won 114 Times. Australia hasn't beaten the All Blacks at Eden park in 33 years. At world cups Australia have beaten the All Blacks twice in Semis. The All Blacks have beaten the Australians twice too. Semi and Final. So be careful about who is whooping who.

Back in the era when Australia versus New Zealand was magnificent Rugby. Australia lost that greatness when the players started spending more time at the hairdresser than on the training paddock.
I think that's down to a massive improvement in defence over the last decade, rather than a lack of skill in attack. Looking back now I'm genuinely shocked by some of the shambolic defending in this match, and these were the two best teams in the world at the time!
Lomu may God bless your resting soul. I thank God for the time you played rugby. I used to enjoyed watching you play. Especially when you used to perform haka then see you playing rugby was breathtaking. May your soul rest in peace. 🙏
Not just the greatest rugby match ever played.. but the whole Bledisloe 2000 series was the greatest ever!... starting with this game and ending with the match at Wellington where all blacks gave arguably the most beautiful set piece try ever from the line out and then the hearstopping penalty kick by John Eales... I cant believe it was 20 years ago.. time flies!!
Points result ok NZ. Real result: Heroic battle. As a kiwi - all good. But what is truly more important is the TITANIC STRUGGLE. Thank you so much to the players. Even after all these years (2021) the physical commitment remains awe inspiring.

Lomu never scored against the Springboks but was much loved and respected. Indeed no matter where in the world, who your team, he had the adoration of rugby fans worldwide.
That Larkham pass at 4:55 is one of the best passes you will ever see. Doesn’t seem like much but to break free and at full speed throw a dime like that on point with larkham hitting without slowing down is amazing. Larkham one of the most under rated players of all time. When Australia could compete and even beat the all blacks year after year rugby was at its best. Australian rugby has gone down big time past 12 years and rugby suffers for it
Larkham is a legend and he is in the hall of fame, i think because he played back then that many people wouldn't know him unless they were like "true rugby fans"
Was in NZ on construction project in Auckland used to see Jonah at the Papakura Rugby Club also when he was getting Dialysis done at the Auckland Hospital, a modest humble man, what a loss to the world of Rugby, he was greatly admired in England. RIP Big man not to be forgotten.
I remember watching this game live from Turkey. It was absolutely intense and the bar I was in was filled with Aussies and Kiwis. We all agreed afterwards that it was the best game of Rugby anyone had ever seen. And everyone there was a major Rugby fan. The fact the Blacks won is irrelevant to anyone who watched the game. Just Incredible.
I was there! But if everyone who says they were there, were actually there, then there would have been more than a million at the stadium. What a great game.
For years Lomu was sick even in this game he wasn't 100% felt sorry for the dude but then again he didn't speak out in his early career days about signs of his health this could have been treated and we would of still had a legend living. NZRU should had a statue of him outside Eden park 🥇. Will never see another rugby player in top level international, steam rolling 2 or more players then out pace the rest. Miss you Jonah!
Don't be fooled by the intense rivalry. Australia and New Zealand are closer than any other two nations on Earth. ANZAC brothers and sisters who will do anything for each other. On a population basis, New Zealand is by far the most successful sporting nation on Earth.
@@glamproperty ,the game itself wasn't that great, only the Stransky drop kick made it special. The significance was more important than the game which was played under dubious circumstances.

Dont agree repeat dont agree. The onset of his specific disease in 90 pct of cases is mild with few side effects if any. Few side effects if any. Later years maybe worse. Later years maybe worse. I repeat...
Lomu was at his peak
@@justincampbell6489 Lomu was ill in 95 let alone in 2000
From a south african supporter. Greegan was most probably the best no 9 of that era. Epic player
The BEST match ever was there and mind blown! Aussie supporter as well
Back in the era when Australia versus New Zealand was magnificent Rugby. Australia lost that greatness when the players started spending more time at the hairdresser than on the training paddock.
Bill Macnaught Doug howlett would like a word
charminjarmin1234 fair call. Big difference is that Doug could play quality rugby.
LOL
And group hugs in the showers haha
Dont forget Nonu wore eyeliner 🤣
As a South African, I truly admire the skills, rugby brain and talent of one George Gregan. His in field awareness/situational awareness in unmatched.
When Australia could actually play.
Yes this team were such a good Oz team
Releases by gregan from the breakdown so fast.... today delayed too long.
I saw it millons time , and today again... Best match ever
Same here. Bestest evah
'If you don't know Lomu, you don't know Rugby.' New Zealand Parable
So many tries scored in this game that would of been disallowed in todays game.
Also George Gregan is arguably the best scrum half of his error
nah, he just done what he was meant to do, never saw anything brilliant.
You don't see hands like that these days! The passing and interchange is unbelievable!
I think that's down to a massive improvement in defence over the last decade, rather than a lack of skill in attack. Looking back now I'm genuinely shocked by some of the shambolic defending in this match, and these were the two best teams in the world at the time!
watching it live was breathtaking - no time to take a pee. Watson blew his whistle 3 times and everyone played brilliantly
I was too stunned @@RickSanchez-dn6rd
I know nothing about rugby, I never watch rugby and apart from Lomu, I have no idea who any of the players are but I was transfixed watching this.
Watch england vs scotland 2019 mate
@@osmanperaltaguzman8337I Will do, cheers.
@@Hondadctrider ,if you want to watch real rugby watch the SH teams because NH teams are rubbish. The SH teams dominate rugby.
@@Trajan2401 lol
Lomu may God bless your resting soul. I thank God for the time you played rugby. I used to enjoyed watching you play. Especially when you used to perform haka then see you playing rugby was breathtaking. May your soul rest in peace. 🙏
When you have 109 000 people watching you live. You gotta play out of your skin. ❤️🏉
That scrumhalf from the Aussies was Intelligent. brilliant performance .
Points result ok NZ. Real result: Heroic battle. As a kiwi - all good. But what is truly more important is the TITANIC STRUGGLE. Thank you so much to the players. Even after all these years (2021) the physical commitment remains awe inspiring.
4:54 Can't stop watching that over and over again. What a beauty.
absolutely true!!... Bledisloe 2000 was just epic from this match to the third match where John Eales kicked the winning penalty
Larkham was a rugby genius.
I was 12 years old, I never forgot this match, time passes so fast....
RIP Johan Lomu tu restera une légende du rugby 🏉
Christian Cullen was the greatest AB of that era. One of the greatest of all time
Even if Australia had won, I think I would still agree that it might well be the greatest match. Certainly one of the greats.
Yes totally agree that no matter which side won it was a phenomenal game with both sides packed with so many great players. Would have been great to have watched it live.
the late 90`s were the pinnacle of world rugby ........... it hasnt been the same since
One of my all times favorite matches. France v NZL in the 1999 world cup is pretty special as well.
2015 W.C quarter final for me lol
@@MeanAzz_13 which one? I ask because I'm Englsh and I'd stopped watching by then!
So frikken bored w/ this coronavirus lockdown. Dang, no sport no rugby so watching the old games on TH-cam. Remember this game. Riveting stuff even now on the Tube. Great commentary.
Springbok supporter through and through but to my friends down south I'm still haunted by Cullen to this day :)) try machine when he touched the ball!!

Haha I can imagine the atmosphere there...the noise😁. That would have been some brilliant camaraderie at the end of the game.
@@IanMwathi shit defense.
Lomu made me take notice of rugby.he just had something soecial
I was there! But if everyone who says they were there, were actually there, then there would have been more than a million at the stadium. What a great game.
For years Lomu was sick even in this game he wasn't 100% felt sorry for the dude but then again he didn't speak out in his early career days about signs of his health this could have been treated and we would of still had a legend living. NZRU should had a statue of him outside Eden park 🥇. Will never see another rugby player in top level international, steam rolling 2 or more players then out pace the rest. Miss you Jonah!
It good to watch this game never seen this game.thank you.
Two of the greatest sides of all time, and the immortal Jonah Lomu being the difference between them.
Lomu a legend ,why ?
Because every Rugby fan around the world cried when he passed away :(
I cried reading that! 😢😢
George Gregan was a machine for Australia. Probably my favourite Aussie player of those times.
The write up NEEDS to include Christian Cullen in its 'greatest match ever' credentials
Don't be fooled by the intense rivalry. Australia and New Zealand are closer than any other two nations on Earth. ANZAC brothers and sisters who will do anything for each other. On a population basis, New Zealand is by far the most successful sporting nation on Earth.
Yes...best game of rugby played to date.
Disclosure: I was there:))
No way man.. 1995 final was even better. Springboks beat nz in 1195 final
109,000 wow...
@@glamproperty oh yes the 1195 final. Just before rugby was invented. I remember it like it was almost a thousand years ago lol
@@glamproperty ,the game itself wasn't that great, only the Stransky drop kick made it special. The significance was more important than the game which was played under dubious circumstances.
Big Jonah.
It happened I met him in 2011.
Great champ.
The days when Australia was a beast team
Had they kicked straight would have won. Both teams scored 5 tries poor kicking cost us.
France - New Zealand 1999 - for the scenario, the game... and Jonah Lomu!
Ah celui-là, c'est clair, on est pas près de l'oublier !
Non on l’oubliera jamais un match épique RIP Lomu le phénomène inégalé

2015 WC QF TOO 🍺👍🏽
Not sure if it's the greatest but the first half was ELECTRIC
I started watching Rugby 🏉 after watching this match. Before this match I didn't even watch one match.
NZ - France WRC 1999 demi-finale was also a wonderful match 😊
So was 2015 W.C QF
It was a different era for Australian sport back then. We were competitive and winning in Rugby, League, Cricket, Netball, Swimming, Cycling, Darts... Good times
And now Australia are only world champions at league in team sports NZ pretty much have the rest lol
If anyone wants to know just how good Larkham was as a Flyhalf, just was 4:52 and the pass that comes after it. He did this his whole career despite being a slight frame
No padding no helmet no freaking gloves, that's the real sport, that's the real game for real MEN!!
Rugby at Jonah Lomu era was different. Rugby was on another world with this extraterrestrial.
Bledisloe Cup Aug 1996 Athletic park. One of the best All Black games ever, had all the big names. Great watching live. Peter O
That was a hammering by NZ against Australia in the rain wasn't it?That team was better than this team.
