Axial Ryft RBX10 Issues! Watch before you Buy!

- The Axial RBX10 RYFT was fun for the first couple of batteries but now I really can't Recommend it. I am disappointed that Axial/Horizonhobby released this with so much power and 4s capabilities but it can barely handle 2s running stock. Many people are going to spend a lot of money on this and are going to need to spend the cost of the truck on upgrades to make it do what it was advertised to do. This is a overpowered mess. Rock Bouncers that people build from bombers and other rigs take more to break than this. Truly fun to rip when it doesnt break itself but very disappointed in my first 10th scale Axial. I should have just purchased a Bomber RR.
So take this as a warning. If you like it and plan to mod it anyways then its a blast. If you planned to keep it as a stock basher because you expect it to stay reliable that way then look somewhere else because this will just disappoint. Hopefully they figure the issues out and help out all the people that already purchased the unrefined rig.

I've ran mine 3s for a couple months jumping , through Creek and everything . No problems at all .
nice! I wish I had that luck. Horizon has taken care of it though so it's just a trail truck now.
I THINK....it depends on how an owner "drives" their AXIAL RYFT !!!!
What do you guys expect. Seriously, if you use them as rock bouncers they’re going to break like a rock bouncer. Ask any owner of a full size one about how many hours of use they get before something breaks. I’ve been using mine with the limitations of the materials in mind. Like not running into a pile of brick size rocks head on at full throttle as he did in the video. Heard guys complain that they break after a few 15 feet high jumps. Really! And that surprises you? I do jumps on grass and sand. Run it flat out on on bitumen, grass, dirt and gravel tracks without issues. Admittedly I built mine from the kit form and know they’re a bit stronger and more controllable with the sway bars but it is still a plastic toy. Could it be better? Sure. But to tell people not to buy one, like in the comments, isn’t justified. I have heaps of fun with mine.
I get your point and agree that it's a great rig when ran more scale and not basher style. You have to admit Axials promotional video didn't help. People assumed that's what its gonna do all day long without issues. I know real bouncers break all day but real desert trucks like scts and desert buggys even rock crawlers need a lot of maintenance and break in real life often but their Rc counterparts seem to handle abuse well.
So in my opinion it's fair to say that they over advertised its capabilities and also labeled it as 4s (this truck is insane on 4s and dosen't need it imo) just because the esc can handle it. The diffs, axle housing and weak endlinks can't handle it. I run 2 and 3s mostly on mine on low gear with the 2 speed and usually 50 to 75 percent dual rates on the stock tx switch.
I still enjoy mine but its not for all. I'm not one to throw tons of bling and cash at my rigs though. I just enjoy running Rcs!
@@RunThatRC I do the exact same thing when it comes to gearing and battery. I think the majority of advertising exaggerates the ability of their products and this is definitely the case here. However, apart from replacing the ridiculously flimsy links and a beefing up the front axle, there is nothing you could do to make any stronger. Making components out of metal would make it far too heavy and the result would be the same. Exotic materials would make it way too expensive. I've seen a revised front axle and it seems to have addressed the cracking issues. No matter what, there will always be people able to destroy them. Been building a nice little collection of WPLs by the way. Are you still really into them?
Put a bit of silicone fuel line on both sides of those ball links to keep them centered. 👍🏻

I wonder if it's a luck of the draw type of thing on those axles. Maybe it was just a batch of bad plastic or something...?
I've been running mine on 4s, only broke a rod end and the servo saver in a ~25mph collision with a fence. Last weekend I was running it up a 50 foot gravel hill and it took 4 or 5 massive cartwheel tumbles down the hill without issue on the axles. The servo died though, I replaced the saver with a solid horn. May have had something to do with it.
they claim the manufacturer made the plastic composition different in production and they are looking into it. Also the clicking diff is a known issue according to the guy I spoke with at Horizonhobby. I've had almost all reported issues happen too me. Just yesterday while out on a trail about 3 miles out my pinion gear on the motor came loose because there was no loctite on it. I still do enjoy the truck but just a little disappointed that my years old Vaterra Twin hammers converted to brushless can take more abuse than this hahaha.
I bought a set of spools for both axles. I lost some steering radius due to posi both front and rear. Now the Trans has gone out. Both axles and the transmission share the same identical differential units. The locker spool is only $12 U.S. so I'm wanting to put one in place of the trans unit. I'll let you know how that turns out. Also, I've blown threw both front and rear axles housings a couple times.
I have installed the two speed gears, rear spool and sway bar and that made it better at whipping the tail end around. Locking the front will definitely lessen steering radius but it should climb like a beasts. Broke rear axle housing, front diff gear, servo saver and rod ends.

My computer tells me that the word "rift" means "a crack or fissure", so perhaps Axial were referring to the axle housings when they named this rig?

@@RunThatRC Let´s hope they either use a different plastic or design an axle housing which has more reinforcing webs.
As for the other problems, they sound more like a quality control issue than a fundamental design issue. They can attend to the shimming issues quite easily, i hope.
One thing´s for certain - Horizon Hobbies are going to want to curtail the rumours about this truck as soon as possible, and they´ve already demonstrated their good faith by replacing broken parts without quibbling.

Must be an old axial tradition. I haven't heard about any axial kits that doesn't break axle housing easily in stock form. All of them need at least beef tubes or metal housing upgrade. Axle housing on my gmade gs02f if far stronger than the usual axial stock plastic axles.
What are your thoughts lowering the pinion teeth 2-3, locking the rear diff and only using 2s? Want it to be able to crawl But have the speed on hand.
I've seen some run the smallest tooth pinion possible in the preset gear mesh positions. It still doesn't slow crawl like a dedicated crawler does but it wasn't made for that. I now have the 2 speed installed locked rear diff and swaybar out back running 2s and its slower but still not a crawler. I do like it but I need a new servo now hahaha.

You beat the piss out of it man.. I never had an issue with mine. My axle housing never broke.. my links never broke, my axles hexes never broke.. like what did you do?
I'm being 100% serious mine didn't cut it on 4s stock not even 3s really. I mean I spent retail on this so I would never go out to destroy it on purpose. Just thought this is what this is for. I shimmed the front and center diff and added the rear locker and the new housings horizon set me and its been good since. Even have the 2 speed in there now. It's still one of my favorites but in my opinion the way they advertised it and showed that ad video of it ripping I was sold! But it can't take that consistent abuse and thats all I wanted to do with it lol.
I have one ryft the only issue i have is spyder gear strip... quick cheap fix epoxy inside the 3 diff and now i bash in 4s and no problème
that's one way to solve the issue for sure.
Have you heard anything about them fixing problems like a v2 I want one but I'm not easy on my rc so yea idk
They are releasing a kit probably has the new axles housings. As for the diffs I'm not sure if they are reshiming those.
Put one together and put the upper diff gear in on top by itself. Mine was way way loose. I left the gasket off and added small shims to tighten the mesh on mine. Try for yourself and see how far that top outer gear sets into that diff case. Think i added 3 or 4 shims to get it tightened up. Only thing theyd have to do is make make the flat area on the back side of the outer grears thicker and it would mesh together like they should. Its no wonder these diffs are chewing themsleves up.
mines been shimmed since I figured out what was going on. snapped rear axle housing Horizon sent me a new one and diff gears and I shimmed them and so far no more issues (I rarely run 4s anymore though).
Thanks man! You just saved me a decent amount of money. I was ready to pull the trigger and order one. Then I saw one used on eBay that was repaired, but the seller never got through a full battery without breakage. This led me to search for reviews and I found yours.
such a nice looking rig and a promising promotional video that definitely made it look like it could take a 4s beating. You can run 4s but have to drive it super scale and no bashing around. I still enjoy mine but want a Bomber or Wraith.
Was getting ready to buy one and now I’m not spending 600 bucks on a piece of junk.
I’ve had terrible luck 2nd day of running and it’s making a terrible clicking/ grinding noise and a shock shaft gets stuck when bottoms out, and came with a wrong tire, very very disappointed

My rear end stripped. 5 runs in yard 3s. Yes I kinda new what I was getting into. Kinda.
fun rig when it doesn't break. I keep to 2 and 3s lipos usually.
My buddy's both bought one went out and both of them snapped a axle one truck front axle other truck rear axle crazy
I believe you. This thing is made of glass hahaha. I just ran it today and broke a tie rod end again and destroyed the steering servo saver.
I'd usually say that RC's always have some quirks right out of the box. But this is just ridiculous. I'll always love and stand by Axial, but they should have definitely done more field testing. I'll also give them the benefit of the doubt, seeing how with all this covid crap. Seems like they just slapped a truck together, just to have a new release come out. A good idea was there, but the planning was not
It's a disappointment from horizon hobby for me. I actually have a lot of there stuff and this one is just horrible stock and for the $.
One or two things ok, but when it seems to be everything. Then that's completely unacceptable. Especially for that kind of money. It's great because customer service won't hesitate to help, but I'd still be pissed

And i have a feeling that this rig is just the benchmark for rock bouncers there will be more brands that will make them to.
hopefully more companies do. Competition is always good because we the consumers will benefit from it.

yeah I think it's not ok to have to spend over 500 for something that will only work right with atleast 500 more in upgrades. I still have mine and like driving it but I mainly stay as scale as possible and 2 to 3s only. Disappointed for my first Axial purchase. Been a Losi, HPI and AE guy for ground stuff.
Every single time I drive mine it breaks 10 minutes in. I have about 1 hour run time on it since I bought it 4 months ago and I’ve taken it apart 7 times for repair. I stripped all 3 differentials, broke 10 rod/link ends as they’re not heavy duty, transmission got loose, steering servo burned up, receiver burned up, u-joint screws fall out allot, trailing arms break. I’m gonna replace everything on that car with aluminum parts besides the cage. It’s an awesome car, but it’s material quality is the equivalent of using newspaper for a bulletproof vest. I only drive it on the low power setting because it’s fragile, and it was an RTR model so I didn’t originally put it together.
These definitely didn't work as advertised. Make it a slow crawler or a 2s bouncer and it handles that better than 4s craziness that this thing can supposedly handle. I still like mine now that I sorted it out and don't bash it anymore than scale style bouncing now.
Get the RTR, break it down and rebuild. Otherwise it's a ticking time bomb like any other RTR on the market. It's like my E-Revo. Servo saver over tightened out of the box and if I didn't go through it, it would have burned both out! It seems to be an unspoken part of the hobby.

Ive got 2. 1 bone stock and its been beat on by a 8 and 10yr old with nothing broke. Same with my other. Not a single complaint. Drive better folks
mine had issues and was done on my first 3s run and 4s just ruined it faster. I was just running back and forth through snow and not really doing any obstacles and the diffs started acting up staight away. They have addressed a lot of the issues with updated parts and sent out diffs, axle housings to people who managed to strip them. They didn't shim the gears right for the amount of power this truck can put out. I reshimmed the new diffs and the truck is holding up so far. If there wasn't an issue Horizonhobby wouldn't have acknowledge it and replaced parts with updated parts.
I'm sure they don't make updated parts just because. They did it to rectify known issues. What's sad is I have cheaper no name RCs that are more durable than this was out the Box. My Ryft is good now but still a disappointment of a purchase for me.

It would be nice if anywhere in the world had diffs for this. This truck has been a headache since day one!!!!
a lot of people have had issues with these. They should have never advertised 4s for this rig.

I think the diffs are shimmed wrong from the factory. They didn't take into consideration the thicker diff oil would need a tighter mesh to not skip teeth under load. I'm no professional but thats my theory atleast. I re shimmed mine and its been working on worn diff gears for now till I get my replacement stuff and I'll shim those right away.
@@RunThatRC yup opened mine up yesterday and the shim was bent inwards pushing the gear out making my right wheel not turn

the differential gears aren't that bad. The problem is the power and the gear mesh inside the differential isn't shimmed correctly to handle what this thing is capable of. I have added shims to diff
output gears to tighten the gear mesh a little and have had no more issues with stripped diffs. I also do not bash my ryft and just try to trail it and be a scale bouncer. Hope you can translate this. Have a good day brother.
Mine just broke today. The gear turned to powder.
yeah unfortunately I don't think the gears inside the diffs are properly meshed for 4s running and maybe a metal diff housing may have helped the gears from stripping as well.
It's like they have us buying prototype rigs not cool for 500

Cool but its meant to be upgraded with vitavon try vitavon axle housings brother.
I am keeping mine as factory Axial as possible. I don't think another 500 in parts is necessary for what I'm using it for now. I have the 2 speed, rear spool and swaybars.

tell your friend not to bash it and drive it more scale like. It should be fine that way. I reshimmed my diffs and it seems to be holding up better now.

You’re wrong about the Axios not being replaced with upgraded axles I have confirmed this with Jeff at Horizon the new axles they are shipping to us are different plastic if you notice one is shinier one is a dull Color. Also if your front steering servo goes out on you they will replace it with the upgraded one. Make sure your information is correct before posting it. You are getting upgraded axles guys and they are stronger. I’ve been bashing the shit out of my rift and she’s great.
That's good to know. I got this info from a cs rep when I called about the issue and I asked if they updated them. I was told by the rep that he believes its the same and hasn't been updated to his knowledge. I always try and make sure my info is correct but unfortunately I guess you can't even trust a cs rep from the company of that product.
I just did a search and someone posted the revised version. Unfortunately it looks like some people including me still received none updated versions from horizon as replacement. There is a noticeable difference in the new one with reinforcement added. Why horizon is giving people the unrevised version is beyond me. I will see if they will send me the revised axle housing and make a video about it if they are willing to send it out.

hope they resolved the issue with the kit release. I have been provided with some replacement parts which I reshimmed the diffs straight away and have not been having anymore issue lately. It's a fun truck now but a headache when I got it.
It's made by Horizon Hobby It will keep breaking. Subpar parts!
I have had pretty good luck with Horizonhobby. I am a fan of some of there stuff. Let's see how they deal with this issue because it's a bad new release.

Marketed a a Basher/Bouncer.. really? They should have added :" Do not use in temps below 15ºC... or speeds above 5km/h or with more than 2s" I truly wonder if they ever tested it properly, or even drove it other than for the sales-pitch vids. I also have the vague suspicion that they chose the cheapest, nastiest factory in China with the worst QC and cheapest, nastiest materials for everything, just so the Horizon/Axial CEO's could pocket more. My word. $500.- for this?? "overpriced China-junk" hardly covers it..
After all the problems I still like the rig but I agree that this wasn't tested or advertised properly. My first Axial and It would have soured me from the brand if I didnt have friends that owned scx3s, wraiths and bombers that came nicely equipped for the price.

Ugh all rcs break. In my 50 yrs of rc ive brkoke tons of stuff. 99 times of 200 its driver error.
I agree. Im 40 and have owned a lot of different RCs since I was 10 and they all break for sure and driver error is a big factor. This one though did have issues from its first run on 3s. Horizon even acknowledged the issue. I have cheap wltoys and hbx rcs that handle more abuse than this did. I got new diffs and reshimmed them and have since had no issues with my Ryft. I don't abuse my RCs but this one is definitely not a durable rock bouncer if you keep running like they do in there ad video which is unfortunately how most are going to run it because of that ad.
Still a disappointing purchase for my first 10th scale Axial. Almost turned me off on the brand if it wasnt for my other friends lettimg me use there Axails that seem to be more durable than this model. I should have just got a bomber or wraith.

I have one I purchased and wished I didn’t. Junk for the money.
I still own mine and like it as a slower bouncer on 2s and 3s. I was also disappointed at this rig. Specially because I review and test cheaper rcs that have handled more abuse that this can sometimes.
@@RunThatRC I have trouble with rear differential. Replaced it 2 times and haven’t ran it hard at all. I’m going to order more shims and give it another try.
@@jasonwebb3214 The rear diff definitely needs to have a closer gear mesh than factory to last. I just run a locked rear on mine.

I've had mine for two weeks and with less than 5 hours of drive time and many many things breaking, My best advice is DO NOT BUY A RYFT. I can not say it any clearer, the RYFT is a $500 buy in for a $1200 RC car if you want to drive it for what is to simulate. There are so many other things wrong with this RC the Breakage is only the START.
Very sad purchase indeed. My first dabble into Axial and this is how they do me! hahaha. I also can't recommend this truck unless like you said you really like this and plan to make it a 1200 dollar truck then good on ya!
I wanted this as a stock basher when I have that urge for powering up a hill after a good days slow crawling. Not with this rig unfortunately! I still do really like it for some weird reason. Just broke it again today Rod end and steering servo saver. This time I will take the blame because I was trying to land a backflip in slow mo but failed and broke hahaha. Video on that will probably be on my clips channel.

first run on 4s stripped front and rear diff and it was only 2nd run i broke my front axle on first day with 3s because i hit a bucket my arrma typhon can do 40 mile cartwheels off a jump on concrete and drive away rbx10 is trash 500 dollar trash u could make a mold buy the electronics and make ur own for half the money axial is worse then traxxis lololol spend ur money on arrma ryft sucks
they definitely didn't make sure this rig can handle power hahaha. That promo video got a lot of people excited but if you run in that fashion you will destroy this rig every run. I enjoy it now with the low gear 2speed and locked rear woth swaybar. Nothing but scale driving now.

If you seen my first run of this rig. I ran it in snow on just a flat area on 3s not even 4s like its advertised to run and the diffs started clicking after the first run with no rock bouncing.
Also I have submitted my video to horizon hobby and they didn't deem my running unacceptable. They warranty it because it has a known issue with the diffs that haven't been shimmed properly. As for the other broken parts Axial acknowledged they had to make updated parts to fix the breakage issue. If they didn't have issues why are they updating parts and informing customers to call support if they experience issues with the Ryft?
I agree some abuse there rigs to an extent they shouldn't expect to be covered but in this case with the RYFT its a legit issue they know about and are helping people out. I got new axle housing and diffs. I reshimmed the new diffs and still running this rig just like you see in this video without issues ever since.
I have been a happy customer of horizon hobby for more than 2 decades and would never abuse there customer service. In my opinion the Ryft was a flop at first for them because they tried to make a fast rig with diffs that are shimmed to far apart, which works for a crawler to be more efficient but a fast rig will strip gears with a loose gear mesh.
And they call WPL junk.....
