Is WINTER a good time to see MIGRATORY shorebirds? (Victoria Australia)

- High tide is a great time to watch shorebirds & Westernport is the perfect location.
On this day, the high tide was at 3pm so we lugged all our gear along the beach to set up and wait to see what shorebirds would arrive & roost. The conditions were spectacular. Still and peaceful. Slightly warm, even though it was nearly winter.
As the high tide was expected to hit mid afternoon, our plan was to wait & watch. Then, after the tide started to recede, we could walk back the same way along the beach (at high tide, the beach access disappears under water). This plan turned out to be the best as the sunset that evening was amazing!!
The birds we saw this evening were:
Bar-tailed Godwit
Red-capped Plover
White-fronted Chat
Australian Pelican
Australian Pied Oystercatcher
Great Egret
Pacific Gull
Crested Tern
Double-banded Plover
(there's so many more... and I will fill in this list as Nimal tells me what they were!!)

Thank you so much 😊 It turned out to be a pretty quiet afternoon for birds. The Godwits were great so they were the stars! The tide was supposed to be really high but it didn't seem to move all that much (we think the sand bank must have shifted). We've been there when there's been way more migratory birds but, of course, it was late May. It was a fabulous sunset though!! And the conditions couldn't have been more enjoyable 😀 ~ Karen

This must've been a perfect weather day for hanging out on an isolated place for hours, watching restful birds. Good light, no wind to speak of and good company... doing some 70's disco moves (at least after some inspired edit-work)😀😃😄😁😆😂🤣

Did you get a reading on the banded birds? (I saw a few godwits and a pelican with a band)
Yes we noticed quite a number of birds were banded but we were way too far away to read the numbers. 🙂
Is it safe for a solo birder. I have only been once? When do the migratory birds return?
Many men do go there alone but I wouldn't go without someone else. When the tide is high, the area is cut off until the tides starts to go out. It's not only bird watchers that go out there too, it's more known as a fishing spot & at low tide people take their dogs for walks along the beach as well. The carpark is also a bit dark & dodgy so being with others would be far more safe.😊 ~ Karen

As for the best time to see migratory shorebirds there, I think it's more the warmer months. Nimal knows everything so I'll ask him to reply when he gets home. 😀
