  • In this part of our Mallee trip, we camp at Wonga Campground at Wyperfeld. Nimal & Tom are determined to see an elusive little bird called a Redthroat. Nimal has been up & down the Discovery Track four times & has never seen one & Tom hasn't seen one in FIFTY YEARS!!.... will they finally see a Redthroat???
    For more information about the Redthroat, visit:

    Camping at Wonga Campground is pretty fabulous!! This was the second time we'd used our Dometic 4 person Hayman air tent.... Tom was pretty impressed!
    The birds and bugs around camp were fascinating! And the Striped Honeyeaters were such a highlight. They were nesting at the time and had made their hanging nest using soft plant material, feathers & spider webs in a tree nearby. Quite the show watching them flying back & forth!!

    So, please enjoy this last installment on our Mallee trip series to Wyperfeld. Thanks for joining us!

    This seems like it was a really awesome trip. You've seen so many beautiful creatures and even the most elusive ones have shown themselves. Fabulous! I particularly liked the close ups of the little creatures (insects etc).

      @@WonderfulWorld316 That's brilliant! 😀 I'm kind of the same! I love photographing tiny little things that you can't really see with the naked eye. I didn't really know much about birds at all before we started this channel but it's been amazing to find out how many different birds there are just in our state!! ~ Karen

    Fabulous. Wyperfeld is such a great place. So glad you got the Redthroat. I’ve had Wonga Campground all to myself in winter

      I would love to go back there in Winter! We did have a very peaceful time for pretty much all of our trip...... until unfortunately the very last night when a family with a couple of noisy kids turned up and squeezed their tent REALLY close between us & the next people (why I don't know?!!) Screaming kids, ball sports.... ugggh! (it was the start of the school holidays so I guess it could have been a lot worse 😜) ~ Karen

      The camp site was really great! So peaceful with loads of space (and the weather was perfect!). I'm so glad that Tom & Nimal finally saw the Redthroat!! Otherwise (weeks later) we'd still be there!! 🤣 Tom & Nimal were not going home without seeing this one! Thanks so much for watching!! 😀 ~ Karen

    Good Samaritans, lizard removalists. Nice tent set up. Great area to walk in. Beautiful. And right in that flock of Rose Breasted Cockatoos (Galahs) is two little Corellas. You managed to capture some great bird shots and footage. Congratulations on spotting your elusive little bird. Well done Nimal and Tom. Those Ants look very busy. Great shots Karen. Love your excitement Nimal. How long were you away for your little expedition? Have an awesome week guys. Cheers ~ Joseph

      We always seem to see loads of lizards on our trips 😀 They are amazing creatures to see them up close! We were away on the Mallee trip for one week (not very long but good amount of time to see what we wanted to see). Our new tent is fantastic!! Love it! So want to go camping again! Nimal & Tom were so thrilled to finally see that bird (tiny little thing but so elusive!!) ~ Karen

    Ah! The joy!! 🥳Also: the FLIES and other creepy-crawlies... thx so much for that, Karen ( - shivers - ). I'm a bit leery of how I will fare in the wild, tbh. I hate pests and fear things that bite and sting, since I get allergic reaction to them 😬(kinda, not the real serious kind, but I tend to swell up and get more pain and itch than most people). That new tent of yours seems like a winner! Easier to rise, very well thought out. I love it.😍
    Also also: no Apostlebirds?😢

    • @naturephotographychallenge
      @naturephotographychallenge  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You'll be right! 😀 All the little creepy crawlies in the photos were tiny and they prefer to hide away from people. The flies are the most annoying!! But the head nets are the best invention to avoid flies or mosquitoes (and they only really turn up in warm weather when there is no wind).
      Our new tent is amazing!! I love it so much.... so looking forward to going on another camping trip (hopefully the beach!!!). 🙂
      The Apostlebirds are more north and don't tend to visit Wyperfeld. They are pretty much guaranteed at Hattah and were such a great bonus at Murray Sunsest. I do miss them though!! ~ Karen

      @Hummingbirder1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@naturephotographychallenge Headnets for the win! I have them, and had great use for it. Like on our Alaska tour. And here in Sweden, ofc, for the mosquitoes.

      @@Hummingbirder1 Aren't they great!! Might not be the best fashion statement but they keep the bugs off the face!! The flies at Wyperfeld kept trying to fly into my ears! Weird.... and very annoying!! 😀 ~ Karen

    BTW .. what cameras/lens do you use, please?

    • @naturephotographychallenge
      @naturephotographychallenge  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nimal & Tom were so happy to finally see such a difficult bird to find. We use Micro 4/3. Nimal uses Olympus OM1 Mark iii with the Olympus 100-400mm lens. I use a Lumix G9 with a Leica/Panasonic 100-400mm lens). I think the Olympus takes better photos but the Lumix takes great video. We both have tripods but Nimal's tripod was playing up on this trip so that's why some of his video was handheld (which was unfortunate for the Redthroat footage) Thanks for watching! 😀 ~ Karen
