  • This is a movie reaction to my first time watching The Prestige, released in 2006 and directed by Christopher Nolan. Magic? Crime? Rivalry? Competition? This movie was 100% up my alley and I had so much fun watching this one! Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Scarlett Johansson, and Michael Caine were all so incredible in this film. Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching!

    This movie made me appreciate the simple mind of a child. The little boy knows the first bird is still dead. Cutter is a great mentor for the magicians, because he's smart enough not to overthink himself. He knows it's a double, and he doesn't need to think anything beyond that.

    "Are you watching closely?"
    Fun Fact: David Bowie initially declined the role of Nikola Tesla when it was offered to him. Christopher Nolan flew out to him personally to tell him that he was the only person he imagined for the role, and that his larger than life persona would make the idea of Tesla building a cloning device believable. Upon hearing this, David Bowie changed his mind and took the role.
    Time Traveling Fact: The editing includes one hundred forty-six time jump cuts, in which the next shot either flashes back or skips ahead to another time period of the storyline. This averages to almost one timeline jump per minute of movie.
    Historical Fact: Chung Ling Soo was indeed a real magician. In fact, it was the stage name of William Ellsworth Robinson, a white man who disguised himself as a Chinese man to cash in on audiences' enthusiasm for the exotic. Robinson lived as Chung, never breaking character while in public. He died in March 1918, when a bullet-catch trick went wrong. "My God, I've been shot" were both his last words and the first English he had spoken on stage in nineteen years.

    By the way, I think the Borden twins each had very different personalities. The "good" Borden I'll call Albert, and the "bad" Borden I'll call Freddie. I think it was Freddie, the bad twin, who tied the wrong knot. It was also Freddie who was obsessed with the rivalry and trying to learn Angier's secret. Freddie liked Olivia, and he was also much more of a showman. And because Freddie was the obsessive one, he was the one who was caught back stage when Angier drowned--so he was the one who went to prison and got hung. The other twin, Albert, was very different. He loved Sarah and was the family man. He was sad about Julia's death, but he didn't know which knot that Freddie used. He lost his fingers first. He was also the one who wanted to stop the rivalry. Luckily it was Albert, the good twin, that survived at the end. If you watch the movie closely I think you can tell, scene for scene, which twin is playing Borden.

    Something I didn’t catch till the 2nd watch through but when Borden says he doesn’t know what knot he tied that killed Angie’s wife he was telling the truth. It was his twin that tied the knot and that’s why he wasn’t sure. Amazing writing and movie.

    I feel like this movie is Nolans own commentary on how he views the making of art:
    "But if you could fool them (the audience), even for a second..... then you can make them wonder".

  • @loganessex699
    @loganessex699 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    So many parallels going on in this movie, too. Even as much as they tell you the ending at the very beginning, you just don't realize it until you do.
    Borden dies the exact same way Sarah killed herself, and Angier kills himself every night the same way Julia died.
    I think Sarah was just intuitive. She could tell when Borden was telling the truth or lying to her, but didn't know actual the reason why. Because as was explained in the beginning, they were living the trick.
    As for who is Jess's real father, I figure that just like which knot was tied on Julia, neither one of them knew who it actually was. So as far as they are concerned they both are.

    I love, love, LOVE how Nolan often foreshadows major plotpoints in his films in the very first title shot:
    -In the Prestige, the opening title shot shows the multiple hats, linking to the revelation of the Tesla's duplication machine
    -In Interstellar, the opening title shot shows the toy space shuttle resting on the bookshelf in Murphs bedroom where the dust is falling down, linking to how Cooper then communicates to his daughter through the tessract via the bookshelf.

  • @CarefulWithThatAx
    @CarefulWithThatAx ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Borden/Fallon were definitely twins. They've been living the double life since the very beginning, which is why he caught on to the method behind the fishbowl trick so quickly. They went to Tesla for the fancy electrical rigging on his updated Transported Man, after Olivia joins the act and convinced him to be showier.
    It's my reading (and I may be wrong) that Sarah figured out the double life, and that's what she was going to tell Olivia, had Olivia not skipped out on their meeting.

    • @Islanders83
      @Islanders83 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t Sarah would kill herself if she found out Albert and Fallon/Freddie were twins. She’d get Freddie to stop taking turns as Albert around her (for obvious reasons). Olivia told Angier that it was a double. He just refused to believe it.

      I too regularly recommend the novel in the comment section of Reactions to this film. One of the key changes made in the film adaptation that I wrestled with for a long time but finally came to peace with was Nolan's removal of the bookend and modern-day story that frames the main Victorian one. I do understand why they eliminated it, but its presence in the novel continues the story and the ramifications of the events into the present and leads it and us into a gothic, supernatural, lingering horror. Your thoughts? I've wondered about others' thoughts on this for a long time.

    the "secret" she wanted to tell olivia is that he is a married person with a daughter.. and the twin didn't want that to happen because he doesn't want olivia to leave him..

    The way I took it was that Borden was the man Tesla mentioned he had done this for before. The difference was that Borden was able to stop at making one close, Fallon. Angier was not able to stop at one clone, instead killing each of the clones and leaving them in the tanks filled with water, which they showed in the final scene of the movie. That's why to me it's Borden that's the good guy here and Angier is the bad guy. done by his obsession. I love this movie.

      If you take the origin novel as the source of the key facts of the story (albeit with some lesser detail alterations that the novel-to-film adaptation took, along with a major elimination of the bookend segments of the story which take place in the present), they are twins.

      also if tesla did make the machine for borden then borden would know how angier did his real transported man trick and would not need to go find out..

    I recommend not necessarily for the channel but sir Michael Caine movies. The ones that made him famous. His first movie zulu ( period war movie in colonial south Africa) or his spy movies ( the harry palmer series) it was made by a James bond producer. Think a super realistic bond, a spy with glasses. Mi5/ mi6 ( secret intelligence/ security service) cold war stuff .also the Italian job and get carter( which he produced himself) ( all masterpieces) or later dressed to kill . A Hitchcock esq brin de Palma movie. Early 80s ( trans issues im it ) or recently ( harry brown) he plays a retired soldier, widower in a crime infested niegborhood of London and becomes a vigilante. ( the grumpy caretaker from harry potter and game of thrones is in it with him ) seriously the queen didn't give him a knighthood for nothing. ( im am leaving out several other amazing movies) like him and sean Connery in ( the man who would be king ) oh i forgot ( Alfie) another masterpiece. .

      They in fact are both exceptional talents and are well cast and suited for their roles. Jackman's long experience in stage acting lent his character as the polished stage performer credence and gave him the honed tools to fulfill the role. Bale, an excellent naturistic actor, exuding a less polished charm and a more everyman demeanor, perfectly fits his role as Borden, who is dedicated to the craft of magic, but not necessarily to have the polished, erudite theater showman chops to present it as Angier does.
