  • This is a movie reaction to my first time watching Rain Man, released in 1988 and directed by Barry Levinson. Can Charlie stop being a bully for literally five minutes? Ray does not deserve that treatment and behaviour from him! We need to protect this man. Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman were fantastic in this film and I had a great time watching this, especially knowing how impactful this film was towards people's understanding of autism. Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching!

You ever hear the phrase "euphemism treadmill"? It's used to describe society's constant changing "approved and acceptable" words.
When we were in middle school, we were told not to use the R word anymore. Being little sht kids, we started calling each other Downys which is way way worse imo. Funnily enough, the faculty was totally fine with us using Downy.

To me, the Susanna & Ray elevator scene is wholesome because she wants him to experience his "date". The kiss being just an experience she thought he may never get a chance to experience ever again, so she kissed him. In my opinion it was a tender moment showing just how large of a range Raymond had to his autism.
Also, I was a late teen when this came out, and it was my first exposure to autism. I had never heard the word autism or autistic prior. Autism, before this movie, was really kept pretty well away from common public knowledge, and this movie really shed a huge light on it, even if that light at first wasn't an accurate light. I'm not sure we would be as aware of autism today had this movie not come out nearly 35 years ago.
    Just my opinion.

So if a man did that to a woman with the same mental issues that Raymond had that would be wholesome to you? I don’t buy it, the elevator scene is a twisted scene whether it’s done by a man or woman.

    • @johnallen6665
      @johnallen6665 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm more or less of the same mind about the elevator scene. She thinks she's doing a good thing by stepping in as the "date" so that he wouldn't be disappointed. As for Charlie and the blackjack winnings I remember raising that objection about using Ray when I first saw this movie years ago with my mother and she offered that he wouldn't have needed the $75k if the trip hadn't been so long. I don't entirely agree there but I can see that rationale on the part of the viewer.

@@thereisnopandemic there is an actual difference if it was a man kissing a woman or a woman kissing a man though. with men a kiss is almost always sexual, with a woman a kiss can be meaning many different things. the only time you'd be almost certain it wasn't sexual for a man to kiss a woman would be if the guy is a homosexual. that scene in the elevator is very sweet, I can't see it as her taking advantage of him because she didn't kiss him because she wanted it. If there had even been a hint of she kissed him b/c she was attracted to him or b/c she wanted to hurt Charlie that would be a case where i'd say it's sick and abusive.

I know Hoffman won the Academy Award for this one, deservedly so. But in all honestly Tom Cruise acted his ass off and held his own against a much more experienced older actor. As he did in A Few Good Men (vs Jack) and The Color of Money (vs Newman). With him doing all these action movies lately people forget that he has been one of the best actors in Hollywood for almost 40 years.

I think you have to look at Susanna's intent above anything else. I believe in her mind she was trying to safely help Raymond learn about what he could expect from someone like Iris. She behaved exactly as someone would with that intent. She didn't pursue Raymond for anything beyond that moment because she never intended for it to be anything beyond that moment. This is why I can't find offense in the elevator scene. Whatever other reasoning we apply to the scene has to compete with that.

Being mainstreamed was vital to my son's development. He was extremely imitative and needed to hear kids with normal speech to help develop his own. All the educational community, who spent any time with him agreed. If they didn't know him I simply brought him with me to meet them. Never have I seen adults melt into butter so quickly. He was adorable.
Suddenly, when they were worried about his tantrums, they thought they could find a minder for him and set up a quiet room to mellow him down. So, speech, life skills and mainstream classes. I learned he was his own best advocate.

I have yet, to see a reactor mention Charlie's use of the word in exactly the same manner and with exactly the same inflection, at the beginning of the film. The script writer connected the brothers through a phrase that was likely used frequently by their father.

About your elevator scene feelings. We live in a very tough time, where viewpoints are more narrow about certain situations than in the past that no one had a problem with. In my own opinion, (which I admit is more narrow that most people I know), I don't believe what she did in the elevator was to take advantage of him. She'd seen how Ray had seemed disappointed by missing his "date." She'd heard how Charlie had taught Ray to dance. I truly believe what she wanted was to allow him to experience a very innocent date. A dance, and a chaste kiss goodnight. She didn't press in, she didn't force. Never once did she attempt to make more of it than Ray would allow. I can see the view of consent, and much is made of it in our day, rightly so, because many have been made victims by a lack of consent in a situation. I feel that she felt sorry for Ray. She gave him elements of a date, without the dangers or risks he would have had with that prostitute.

"What you have to understand is, four days ago he was only my brother in name. And this morning we had pancakes."
This is a great family movie about brothers, a rare subject matter for Hollywood.
As much as I detest how they treat General Custer, I think Dustin Hoffman's performance in Little Big Man (1970) is his absolute best. If I wasn't a student of history, I'd buy that movie's revisionist agitprop. I still recommend that movie thoroughly.
Fun Fact: The elderly man in the waiting room who talks on and on about the Pony Express is Byron P. Cavnar, an 89-year-old local who was in the waiting room when the crew arrived to film there. He got to talking on his favorite subject, the Pony Express, and director Barry Levinson got such a kick out of it that he let Cavnar keep on talking as the cameras rolled. All his dialogue was spontaneous and not scripted.
Best Ending Fact: Dustin Hoffman fought for the ending where Raymond goes back to Wallbrook, even though the screenwriters both wanted him to end up with Charlie. Hoffman thought it wouldn't be true to Raymond's character if they had him stay.
Historical Fact: What Raymond Babbitt says about Qantas was, and still is true. From 1921 to now, Qantas has never lost any jet airliners. They even promoted one of the movie's writers to first class once when he travelled on their airline.

Hi Gator! Thanks for all the facts about this. I really like that Dustin fought for that ending, because I think it is the best outcome too. I don't think Ray could have really thrived with Charlie fully, or it would take years to, and Charlie would really have to adjust his entire life in order to care for him and I did not get the impression he was truly up for that, or knew what kind of sacrifice that would end up being.

I’m also ASD, and I have spent most of my life not knowing why I was different from most everyone else.
I was in special education classes and pretty much everyone roasted us for being different.
We were called the fruit bowl class, and rode the “short bus.”
The only thing they really knew about me was that I had ADD and had difficulty staying on task.
ADD/ADHD, as it’s called now, OCD Anxiety and Depression all usually go hand in hand with ASD.
I didn’t speak much in public for most of my childhood, (There are probably additional reasons for that that likely stem from abuse)
But mostly, I think that I was struggling with reality, as to me it always felt so surreal. I was struggling to understand the way my brain functioned, or didn’t at times.
As I’ve gotten older I’ve come to realize and identify with my disorder through meeting someone else who was so much like me as a kid, it unbelievable.
My ex girlfriend and best friend of nearly 15 years has a son who is a high functioning Autistic.
I see so much of myself in him now, and we really get along quite well.
I’m not 100% about the science of Autism. But I have learned some things over the years that are not always common knowledge.
So, in saying that we have come a long way since the 1980’s in our understanding of Autism, you were right. That’s very true.
I also feel like the different degrees of functionality and understanding are greatly influenced by socialization and therapy.
Especially for those who have severe cases. I think in the past if we didn’t understand why people were different we just locked them away. In someone like Raymond’s case, I think that may be why he was so affected by it.
If you lock anyone away and don’t expose them to society and every day life, they are going to regress.
So just imagine how that would affect someone who is already struggling to relate and needs a strict routine and a guided life in general.
I think technology helps a lot in this age as well. Autistics LOVE them some video games and computer networking. 😊
I think it helps with cognitive function, somewhat learning about the world in a way that feels like less of a personal immersion, and also helps to get people socialized and learn about people all over the world that they are introduced to through online gaming.
I’ve learned through repetition and exposure, and sometimes even being shamed by my peers and friends, what NOT to do in mixed company, but I’ll always be 5-10 years behind in maturity. But there is hope for development for some of us as we age.
When I was in elementary school, how they dealt with us misbehaving, was to either restrain us (something they actually taught teachers then) or to lock us in what they called a “time-out box” This was basically like an 8 foot wooden box lined with very thin short carpet and had chicken wire on top of it. Yes, I’d say we’ve come a long way.
I admire your gigantic heart, and really enjoy your reactions. Thank you. (SORRY THIS WAS SO LONG!)

This was a wonderful comment to read, thank you so much for sharing. It really is terrible how we used to treat people who weren't "normal" and obedient like everyone else. To your point about technology helping, I agree. I have streamed on Twitch for over 3 years and autistic folks really love using Twitch. It allows them to practice being social with others in a text-based format where they can get better at things like reading the energy of a room, without having some of the cues to help them, like body language, tone of voice, etc. I have had a few viewers with autism over the years (they are very vocal about letting us streamers know they are autistic). Thank you again for your comment and glad you enjoyed the reaction! ☺️

I'm autistic myself and while a lot of things didn't age well like the oversaturation of savantism in media and it's implication that ability/utility=value, overall this movie still holds up pretty well, especially for something released in the 1980s.
I also wanted to address you constantly saying Raymond doesn't understand. Autism is not a cognitive disorder nor is it a (direct) learning disability. It's mostly a sensory processessing/nervous system disorder. It can feel like you're on fire and drowning all the time. Imagine going through that while trying to carry on a mundane conversation. That's why some people can be non verbal or seem like they're "not all there". It has nothing to do with cognitive ability or intelligence. Also certain ideas or phrases can comfort that extreme stress and some can make it worse. Hence why autistic people cling and repeat certain thoughts and words and altogether ignore and block out others.

Hans Zimmer's score is wonderful in this film, in fact it is Hans Zimmer's Hollywood debut with this film, it´s his first work in Hollywood, music with a unique sound, a mix of flute with synthesizer sounds, more drums Africans, it was something rare and unique at the time. This music was liked so much that it caught the attention of other directors and Hans was quickly summoned by several directors, including Ridley Scott for Black Rain and Thelma and Louise, his brother Tony Scott, summons Hans for Days of Thunder (another movie with Tom Cruise ), for Crimson Tide, True Romance, etc and several other directors also hire him. and Hans' career takes off quickly, because since Rain Man, Hans hasn't stopped working. And regarding the sound of Hans in those years it was like that, in the 80s and 90s, he used a lot of synthesizer and not so much orchestra, that came later from the movies like: Backdraft, The Lion King and Gladiator, where he began to incorporate more orchestra , combined with his synth sounds.

But he was an excellent bowler. 5 pin with a 208 average. Not bad at all. One day the 4 of us and Gib played. About half way through the game I asked what my score was. Without hesitation he knew my score and everybody else’s straight away. Wow!! The other thing was when we would come to town in the summer I would sit at the kitchen table with my grandfather and my Uncle Gib listening to the Tigers baseball game. He may not have been Autistic I don’t know but he amazed me and I loved him so very much and remains one of the most beautiful memories of my life. He had no politics or hidden agenda. He wasn’t petty or biased . He couldn’t articulate or understand. He just was Gib. He died of an aneurysm instantly a few months before he turned 50. Grand Malle seizures almost every single day of his life. And he never complained about any of it. He was my Rain Man.

Good reaction/review, I'll give you a quick autism story about a little girl. I think she was 4, who took a liking to me and when her mother came in to work to visit with her they would always stop by to see me. She rarely talked but she made her feelings known. Her mom said she liked me because I let her do what SHE wants rather than try to explain things to her or talk to her. An example was one day she had a toy where you put different shapes in different holes. She picked an octagon shape and tried to put it into a round hole. Of course she didn't fit properly so she started banging it with another piece. Rather than showing her the proper piece I handed her something heavier and banged it a little and handed it to her. She felt that it was heavier so she used that to bang the piece in. When it was in she took the toy and turned it upside down to show me that now the piece wouldn't fall out because it was tightly in there. The mother was watching and told me "I was wondering where this was going, this is why she likes you". She's now older I think 8 and still looks forward to her visits, her mom told me stopping in to see me is what she has to do first. I honestly don't do anything special, I just let her do what she wants and I help her, if she wants, sometimes she just wants me to watch. Its such a great feeling.

Definitely a more harsh and often more nerve-wracked reaction to this film than I'm used to seeing. Despite the inaccuracies, the film does deserve a ton of credit for being the first piece of mainstream media to spotlight the autism spectrum. For a certain generation this was the very first time their consciousness was raised at all, and in an era where mental health in general received very little exposure too.

Great reaction! I really enjoyed how detailed your review was. I saw this in theaters when I was in my 20's with a woman, I was dating at the time that had just started to work with autistic children. She would have agreed with you about the elevator scene, especially locking them both in the elevator and kissing him. Asking to dance with him while Charlie was there would have been a better decision. Still a great film flaws and all, and an important one that brought attention to autism.
One of the best non-action Tom Cruise performances along with A Few Good Men and Jerry Mcguire. Worth checking out if you haven't seen them.
Dustin Hoffman was in lots of really good films from the 60-90's. All very different types of roles as well, pretty versatile actor. The Graduate, All the Presidents Men, Tootsie, Midnight Cowboy, Kramer vs Kramer and Hook are probably the most famous ones. Not many have been reacted to for some reason but all probably worth a watch at some point.

Well I didn't expect to have an emotional rollercoaster this evening. Wow. I saw this movie once when I was little and remembered so little: Guy with disabilities, money is tied to him, they're brothers, they grow close, KMart sucks. Mostly KMart sucks I thought that was hilarious.
This was just damn. Its frustrating having majored in Psych in the 2010s and as you said people took this to mean: This Is What Autism Is and its just no. And I was so stressed out for Ray and pissed at Charlie for causing him so much distress (some wittingly and some unwittingly).
Who's On First is great Ray has great taste.
So objectively I think you're totally right about Susanna in the elevator for all the reasons you said. It might be interesting to think about this in the context of the 80s such as it is. How much was the concept of consent in public consciousness back then? I would think not at all unless you're in court and that's relevant. I would bet in the 80s this was written and received by the audience that Susanna was doing Ray a solid in letting him experience kissing a girl because despite the clear portrayal of Ray's character, I think everyone would've assumed that because he's a dude then OF COURSE he wants some action. That's just a baseline that EVERY dude wants right? Even though in reality thats not necessarily true, either for people like Ray or just some people aren't interested in such things and that's fine too. I'm curious if people who saw this when it came out could confirm or deny my suppositions about how this scene was received.
Wasn't Dustin Hoffman the father/scientist in Beyond Two Souls?
"So me being a good catcher I try get out the guy on first base so I throw it to who?"

    Kaiielle,
Good job reviewing Rain Man. As for the elevator, I think Charlie's GF had nothing but good intentions for Raymond in the elevator scene. During her limited screen time in the movie, she constantly had Raymond's back & argued with Charlie over how he was treating Raymond in her presence. She never showed any desire over any part of the $3M Charlie was obsessed in obtaining from Raymond. I think her actions in the elevator was her way of making up for Raymond being stood up by the lady he met at the bar. It was her way of showing Raymond some love & attention he missed all the years he lived in the institution & during his trip with Charlie to L.A. She showed no signs of being a "gold digger" in the movie. I wish I could have married her instead of my own ex-wife. Speaking of gold diggers.... 🤣

Retarded was and still is a medical term and there's NOTHING wrong with its use in that capacity. It's also an adjective (to retard) meaning to slow down something. It fell out of favor only because it's use spread to slang language of people using "retard" as an insult. I only bring this up because I find it unfair to think that 30 years ago we were somehow "backwardass" for using a perfectly legit term. Just like the word "cripple" is no longer used because handicapped replaced it. It's nothing to cringe about.

    • @kaiielle
      @kaiielle  ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yeah, language constantly evolves and even though it is still a medical term, it is more commonly used as a slur today so I do find it uncomfortable to hear and that is just me. I know other folks also find it uncomfortable too which is why I elected to remove the audio of it being said. To be clear, I am not wishing the movie had been made differently without the use of it. I understand that back in the 80s and even the 90s it was a common word to describe mentally disabled folks.

The thing most of the reactors do that I think is an overreaction is assigning every single thing that happens to Ray as mean or evil in some way. I get the wanting to protect him from any agenda Charlie may have. But Suzanne at no time did anything inappropriate to Ray. In the elevator you really think she was perving out on Ray? Lots of reactors did. She was simply letting Ray experience going on a date with a girl. It was very touching. He let certain people get a little closer to him. It looks like Charlie and his father and his brother had the same problem. Communicating and showing love to others. We are seeings things unfold in a very up close and personal way but step back and see things in a more general context and I think you may see the similarities. Nobody changes completely in 6 days. I think Charlie came a long ways . He made up with Suzanne in a genuine way and in the end he knew the right path. The thing I take from this? Dustin Hoffman is one badass character actor who won an academy award. Tom did a great job too. Good movie

Kim died 13 years ago, but a lot of his interviews are available on TH-cam, and you can witness how smart he really is, he could read two pages of a book at the same time. just wanna say I enjoyed your reaction but I also think you shouldn't be bothered over the use of a clinical term like "retarded". yes, it can be used as an insult, but when it's used in reference to someone with actual mental disabilities it's not an insult it's just a medical term. my uncle had a lot of physical and mental disabilities; it was a lot easier to just say to my friends that he was retarded than it was to list the several physical and then the mental problems he had, and then try to explain what each one was.

I agree with you 100% on the inappropriateness of the elevator kiss. I think the intent of the script was that it would be “cute” with Raymond’s “wet” response, but… no. I think the creepiness of it would have been more obvious with a gender reversal. If the autistic character was a woman, a lot more people would be outraged with a man giving her a non-consensual kiss. Great reaction, Kaiielle. I’d love to see more reactions to serious films. 👍
