  • This is a movie reaction to my first time watching Signs, released in 2002, and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. What a fun thriller starring Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix, both with performances that I really enjoyed! I really appreciated the take on extraterrestrial life in this film and that it focused more on faith, miracles, coincidences, and more! The length of the film and overall pacing were great too. Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching! Let me know YOUR thoughts in the comments below!

👽🛸🌽🐕‍🦺🥛⚾🏏okay! 1) EXCEPTIONAL editing on this one! 2) I spy with my little eye... A great insulated cup 😊 3) this one of M. Night Shaymalan (sp?) 's movies is pretty great. A fantastic ensemble cast, great script, well paced, good humor & character development. Thrilling, suspenseful, a little creepy, and a lot of fun IMHO. 4) Joaquin in the closet watching the birthday party video is one of my fav gifs of all time 😂

I first saw Signs in the theatre. You could hear a pin drop. The whole audience went in expecting a fun little thriller and in the environment of the big screen it was one of the most tense and terrifying movies I've ever seen - the jump scare of the kids party home video got everyone good, but things like the pure quiet during the early dog growl just kept everyone on edge. This film I feel is still underrated, but to me is a master class in tension and sound design, and I actually appreciate the lampshading of the themes of coincidence and faith. I went in to this film expecting nothing and got one of the most atmospheric experiences I've had. I love this movie.

This was the only film I seen at the cinema twice! You can always hear a pin drop in UK cinemas as we tend to sit in silence more for the respect of everyone else watching. We don’t do all the shouting and cheering like in the states but each to their own. Another thing that made this so terrifying is that it was the first alien thriller/horror of its kind. We have a few more now like The Fourth Kind and Dark Skies but before Signs all we had was alien invasion films like Independence Day, War of the Worlds etc. which aren’t scary

I'm so glad you enjoyed this! M Night's movies are usually more philosophical than terrifying, which I personally love about them, but I think a lot of people go into Signs expecting an alien invasion movie and are disappointed that it's more about a man regaining his faith. So it's probably a good thing you didn't know what to expect! It's such a gem of a movie and only gets better on every rewatch.
The Sixth Sense is another must-see M Night Shyamalan movie. 💧

I remember watching this film in 2004 or so, me being 11 years old, and becoming completely obsessed with it! Even pausing it in the scene where the alien is on the roof to see it properly. What a movie!

Loved this reaction! M. Night doesn’t get enough credit for building these insightful emotional scenes, has also gotten some great work from his actors. Others have mentioned, if you’ve able to avoid spoilers for all these years you need to experience Six Sense and Unbreakable.

One of the taglines for the movie was “Don’t see it alone”. And when I saw it in the theater for the first time, it was in a little 30-40 seat theater in my town and I was the only person at this particular screening one night. It was both fun and scary at the same time, especially the night time scene in the cornfield. The surround sound really made for quite the immersive experience.

This movie had a serious psychological impact on my beother and I when dad showed it to us at the time lol. We grew up in a very rural area surrounded by cornfields and deep thick forests. So naturally you didn’t go out at night unless you absolutely had to. Still to this day I don’t go out unless I am armed 🤣. Everyone I have seen react to this comments on the size of the cornfield. Its actually not huge. At least not by midwest comparisons lol. Anyway yeah I love this movie

To answer some of your questions: Yes, Shyamalan does usually play a role in his movies (it varies from just a few seconds to being a major supporting character), I'm more in the second group, and my meal would probably be burritos.
Also, recommendations for more of M. Night's movies-- Unbreakable, the Village, and Lady in the Water are underrated in my opinion.

There are several M. Night movies you need to watch: The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Split and maybe The Village and Knock at the Cabin. If you want to see a Joaquin Phoenix movie, "Her" is okay but if you really want to see him at his peak, watch "Joker".

There's one big flaw in this movie: to the aliens, water is very dangerous. So why then come to a planet which has oceans, which has much moisture in the air, where it regularly rains and where the dominant lifeforms consist of mainly water??

I've always loved this movie. Yes, it has aliens, but they're just a device to move the story along, which I've always thought was the journey of Gibson's character from a religious man whose had his faith shattered, but through the series of events finds it again. And the young actors (now grown) are really fun to watch. You really believe they're siblings.

So, this is your first M. Night movie? Cool. I will not spoil any of the others. I will simply say that if you enjoy Joaquin Phoenix, The Village is a fun M. Night movie. Of course, there's the Sixth Sense. I think Unbreakable is my favorite of M. Night's movies.
He does a good job of building suspense. His later movies haven't been quite as epic as his first.

In all honesty the lack of a full form terrified me more than when it was actually revealed. One of my favorite scenes is in the beginning when the only thing you saw was the leg in the crop field. Also all the sounds and knocks and seeing the hand/ fingers under the pantry. The actual design of the creature didn’t impress me much but of course that’s not really the point of this film.

No spoilers from me, as always. I originally binge watched M. Night Shyamalan's first four movies from my dad's DVD collection all in one day for my first viewings. "The Sixth Sense" was the first, and then "Unbreakable," "Signs," and "The Village." I, personally, was very impressed with all of them. Then there were several that I wasn't as impressed with, and I stopped watching his movies. I haven't seen "Split" or "Glass," but I have heard they are both worth watching.
It's just been me and my dad for most of my life, and he forced me into loving his favorite foods. They're my favorite too. My last meal would be medium rare steak with onions and mushrooms and a baked potato stuffed with cheese on the side. I could die happy after that.
I am the non-miracle type, since you asked. I was kept as sheltered as possible from religion until I was 10... my parents wanted me to learn about all the religions with no preconceptions, at an age where I could think critically. I learned about all of the major religions, and I had issues with believing or agreeing with all of them. I've been a steadfast Atheist ever since. To me, what happened with those ships would come down to pure luck. But not 50/50. Let's be real, given that the US has been a dumpster fire since I was 13, I just assume all our luck will be bad luck. That's my life experience, so that's what I expect.
In this movie, when it gets to the scene when Merril knocks over the alien and the glass of water spills on its arm, the movie pans around to all the glasses of water sitting around and the humans, and I feel like we're supposed to feel the family's sense of wonder at their good fortune. But for some reason, my brain always jumps to the alien's point of view as it wets itself: "Oh, f**k me... I walked into a death trap!" ✌🤓

I do like that Shyamalan likes putting interesting twists in his movies, but after Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, the twist in this movie (that circumstances were all a setup for them to survive an alien invasion) was a miss for me. It doesn't take much to move me in a way that's meaningful, but I think this movie was too literal with it.

I'm not really a religious person, but I'm not completely athiest either, so I can definitely relate to thinking that sometimes things happen for a reason. This is has always felt like one the more unique M. Night movies to me, Unbreakable is pretty interesting too. I'm not a fan or most of his other movies (except Sixth Sense, which remains to be a great watch). This is probably Mel Gibson's best movie (that I've seen, anyway), and I think the first film I saw Joaquin Phoenix in, very memorable film.

    Hi Kaielle ;)
I love this movie... Very much underrated. I always thought of it as "War of the Worlds" in reverse... in that movie almost everything was big and flashy and world-scale. This one is very much one location, very personal, we don't know what's happening anywhere else except through the tv news reports. Making it personal shows that it might happen to us.
One small nit: if the aliens don't know how doors work, how did they survive the trip to Earth?

  • @beannathrach2417
    @beannathrach2417 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

The movie makes sense as a religion movie. Morgan tells his father he hates him and later Graham echoes saying he hates god.
Aliens are demons. Demons are confused by mazes, door locks etc. When Bo's water baptizes the alien it defeats the alien just like baptism drives away demons.
Are there coincidences? Or was it all arranged to save Graham and his family from the apocalypse if only he would trust his god?

Other movie directors who liked putting themselves in cameo appearances in their own movies include Stephen King and Alfred Hitchcock. Another great Mel Gibson movie to watch is The Patriot.

The movie is a great tense movie about an alien invasion, but from the perspective of a small family living on a farm in small town America, and captures the confusion, fear, and uncertainty of such a world-changing event from their isolated point of view. There is a bit of a plot hole though, as it doesn't make a lot of sense for an alien race whose weakness is water to invade a planet where the majority of the surface is covered with water and where water falls from the atmoshere as rain. It seems incredibly foolish of beings who are advanced enough to have achieved interstellar travel to go to a planet with a surface that is so deadly to them.

🚰 I'm more "meh" on the movie but it's growing on me a little. You were very predictive at times (the fate of the dog, the last jump-scare) but the final reveal didn't really seem to knock your socks off. I was waiting to see a light bulb go off, but you did come through in your final analysis, demonstrating that you grokked the the subsurface level but possibly not giving it its due primacy. The more you watch this flick the more you see it's not really about aliens at all... In fact the alien plot line doesn't even really make sense. It's just there for visual appeal and to service the themes surrounding the other kinds of signs. 🤔

Hahaha! Yeah, there were NEVER any “blank tapes” waiting around at ur house. Like honesty-we used to tape tv shows bc there was no streaming/on demand anything. If u wanted to watch like…Friends on Thursday nights & couldn’t watch live…if u didn’t tape it, u couldn’t see it until the summer, when they’d rerun only a few episodes before the new season. It was like that with EVERY show…so no. We had no blank tapes. Ever. U had to tape over other stuff & u never knew how much space u had on the tapes. So most of the time…u grabbed whatever u could & fought with family members over “quick! What tape can I use?!” And “u ahole - u taped over MY show for the new Britney Spears video on MTV?!” Lol. Constant.

I definitely don't see the universe behaving in a way that foreshadows what is about to come, like with the bat and the "swing away". That being said I don't think the universe is totally and completely random, that is, that the proceeding event has no correlation to that which preceded it. I think the universe is half random and half deterministic. To boil it down, the universe is in a superposition of all possible paths. Objects seem to follow deterministic evolutions only because we are not privy to every random event that inexorably caused a deterministic course. When it comes to us, it is no difference. I can walk to work, I can take the bus, I can drive, I can ride a bike. We can't do all of these things simultaneously, despite the fact that the universe really exists in a state where all these are happening. We are not allowed to see all that is happening, the full state of things, simply because the laws of the universe prohibit such observation. Thus emerged free will, or choice, so that the universe could uphold its prohibitive nature now that beings that have multiple avenues of interaction with the universe exist.
So as far as I see it, nothing exists as some divine sign. We make choices, and one of those is choosing to attach meaning to some things, and not to others. As Dr Manhattan says in Watchmen, "Only what can happen does happen." Sometimes the universe evolves in such a way as to give you a heads up on what's to come, but not as far into the past as it occurs in the film. I wholeheartedly believe the past is still as real as the present, as all of spacetime exists simultaneously. Not just all of space, but all of time, coexisting in an ever evolving mesh of possibilities. Only in a completely deterministic world, one where free choice does not exist, would such an unrelated event in the past be a sign for something unrelated in the future. There could only be such a connection if the future event was inevitable, which would mean no action between the two could have caused it to change. Obviously we on earth cant really do anything to change aliens deciding to come here, but therein lies the acknowledgement that the aliens did indeed *decide* to come here. So to us, the aliens showing up seems inevitable even in a random, non-deterministic universe, but only because we are not privy to the observation of their existence, and all the both deterministic and random happenings that occurred for them to embark to earth. So seeing something as a sign is a choice, regardless of whether or not the happenstance which lead to the event that proceeds that "sign" was more random than deterministic or vice versa.
I dont think it means we should look for signs all the time, because that just leads to conspiracy brain rot and seeing stuff that actually isnt there. However, i do think it's meaningful to look at some events in our lives that were, or are impactful, and looking at them through the lens that they were supposed to happen, or at least, supposed to happen the way they did, so that you could then benefit from the other choices given to you in this future that is different than what would have been. Like for example, meeting someone you used to love 20 years later. It might have been the result of primarily the choices of you and them, and other people around that made choices of their own that caused the circumstances that lead you two to make the choices you did. It could also primarily be the result of determinsitic events that neither of you or anyone around you could have changed. Either way i dont think it means that for instance, "life brought you together again for a reason," or that, "them being here with you now means you were meant to be together." All that it really means is that you now have new choices, that can make your future different than what it would have been without those choices.
As the universe is eternally churning in superposition of all possible paths, our choices create new paths to manifest, and cause others to become impossible and disappear.
I know all that was probably super convoluted. I have trouble getting my thoughts out in a cohesive, non-repetitive way, but nevertheless, it is always fun to talk about.

As a sci-fi fan, I cringed at the moment when the aliens hate water. Really? It rains on this "rock" and let alone this "rock" is 80% water. Not very bright aliens. Will never watch this again. That's my opinion and I respect everyone elses. Just.....really?

To be fair, it's not clear if the aliens knew before arriving that water affected them in that way - maybe they don't have water wherever they have come from! But even if they did know... sometimes beings make dumb decisions. Like the handful of people on our planet that want to go live on Mars. 😅

i am not a fan of m. night and this movie was the tipping point. 6th sense was great and unbreakable was decent (and that was better than most superhero movies at that time). this one has great tension build up, but the foundations are shaky. the scenes in the moment are suspenseful. but if you think twice about the scenes, they fall apart real fast. especially the climax reeked of mediocre writing. the plot feels stuck together with tape just enough so the suspense scenes had a chance.
