- This is a movie reaction to my first time watching Passengers, released in 2016 and directed by Morten Tyldum. Another sci-fi ticked off my list! Who would you prefer to be alone on a spaceship with, Chris Pratt or Jennifer Lawrence? I think 99% of humans would do what Jim did. Cos we can’t cope mentally alone. He was so broken I think it makes complete sense what happened personally.
And if he would have just succumbed to depression and offed himself everyone on the ship would have been dead because there would have been no one able to repair the asteroid impact damage. The chief who got woken up absolutely would not have been able to save the ship in the state he was in.

@@zeno4538Most people definitely would do it. Those who wouldn't would kill themselves. We humans are deeply social animals. It is a known fact that prolonged isolation can literally kill us even if all our other needs are met, and even if it doesn't, it will at best mentally destroy us. We in modern times are for many reasons (almost none of them immovable, inevitable, or unable to be fixed) in such circumstances where we are very alienated from each other, more than we have ever been in human history. Loneliness is literally an epidemic and it is taking a toll on us. The fact we are experiencing all this may be a factor as to why many of us think we could handle it, since many of us feel like we are not far off from living that reality. But even that little bit of social interaction even the loneliest among us get makes a huge difference. I know it is weird to hear this from a random youtube comment, but if you remember anything from this comment, let it be that. Try to keep it in the back of your mind when interacting with any human being.
@@zeno4538 I think you are too optimistic have you seen the world? 99.99% + 0.01% would wake up at least someone even if it was just a repair person
@pizzafire6666 repair workers aside, i think 70 to 80% of people wouldn't wake another person just for company. I think most people follow basic morals.
There was an analysis I read some time back that states that Passengers should have been edited so it shows the experience from Aurora's POV, starting with her awakening. Jim's actions would have been revealed to the audience at the same time as Aurora, turning the movie into more of a horror / suspense film. When Lawrence entered the ship, we would have gotten a flashback of Jim's first year awake, and would have made him more of a redeemable character.
I liked the movie overall, but Stockholm Syndrome precludes the possibility of real love. Maybe the movie should have taken a Twilight Zone-ish twist at the end where Jim is killed by exhaust release into space. Then Aurora lives alone on the ship for a few months before she goes crazy from isolation. Then she makes the same exact choice that Jim made with her. She chooses a man among the passengers to wake up in order to keep her company. Then she will realize the position that Jim was in, and she would finally forgive him in the end.
That would have been a cool way of going about it!
I do not know whther they had "real love" or not, compared to some people today probably they did also I can't fault the guy too much. Alone for so long? People go cocoo from that and I do not think me or you would be that different. We would probably wake someone up as well.
Just because you understand why he did something doesn't make it any less heinous or manipulative.

Not sure if it's Stockholm Syndrome. It's more likely the fear of being alone.
Watched this movie yesterday at a family gathering. I just came to the realization that when Gus told them to take care of each other before he died, He practically married them.
Seeings how he is the ranking officer on the ship. He is technically Captain until the rest of the command crew awakes. And I believe Captains can marry a couple.
Your problem about being "selective" about who he woke up is kinds wrong imo. Dude was awake for a year without anyone and it's kinda implied he's gone through most if not all the other passengers files like he did with aurora. He was fully alone for a year and you have no clue how many people would even last that long, people legitimately go insane without other human contact shown from studies.
Imo this movie is kinda like a modern version of castaway. In Jim's lowest moment needing anything to latch onto, he randomly happened upon aurora, which became his version of "wilson". Only issue is that he could make "Wilson" be able to talk back only if he fucked their life over.

Ok, so I watched your review, and can completely understand and empathize with your viewpoint.
Having said that, I think the point of this movie is "What would I do in that person's shoes?" It's a moral dilemma that's incomprehensible to any of us, because in order to walk in any one's shoes, we have to WALK IN THEM. When Jim woke Aurora, I thought "You ASSHOLE!" But I hadn't just spent 1 year and 3 months alone, with no company but a bartender android, and facing the rest of my life, doing the same. I hadn't actually walked in his shoes, so it's easier for me to empathize with Aurora, who was cheated out of her entire future she had planned... yet I hadn't walked in her shoes, either.
All of us have a destination planned for our lives, but how many actually achieve that? How many of our dreams are derailed by the simple fact of existence? How many have worked their whole lives toward a goal such as professional athlete or Olympiad, to see it permanently flushed away by a car accident? Life isn't fair, and very few (if any) of us end up where we planned to be.
How many of us flushed our own dream, by choosing marriage or family, or "settling" for a safe career?
Conversely, how many of us could have walked in Jim's shoes for that whole period, looked at Aurora, and then tip-toed out the side-door, sans space-suit, to float away, rather than wake her? Am I capable of being such a selfless god-being? Are you?
As human beings, we are all a mess. We will look at our life-partner and say "if not for you, my dreams would have come true", never once comprehending that if we'd thrown away our dreams for one person, we probably would have done so, for another. How many of us hate the person we think we wasted our lives on?
I like how Gus put it, a drowning person will always drag someone down with them... it's not right, but they're drowning, they have no other option available to them.
What I see with Aurora's final choice is this: How important is that dream I wanted? I can spend the rest of my life with this person who loves me, and whom I love, or I can go back to sleep, wake up to find them dead, and hop on another ship to sleep for 120 years to see what the world would be like, then. She just watched him sacrifice his life to save her's, and everyone else, on board. He died for her. The fact that she was able to bring him back changes nothing. If she hadn't brought him back, he still died so that she could live.
What else compares to that, in this universe? What are each of us desperately searching for, in our lives? To see what the earth looks like in 250 years? Or to find someone whose life is so wrapped up in us that they begin and end with us? I don't know what your answer to that question is, but I know mine. I would have made the same choice as she...
See, I would have preferred that the movie dove into the exact things you bring up in your comment here, rather than play out as a cutesy romance with a problematic ending. 😊
@dannyRayMilligan66 loved your take on this. There are only few who would see it this way and consider actual human nature before judging the charecter decisions.
@@kaiielle Yeah I think a lot more detail into the mental aspect of what the characters in the movie did (in the end part) would’ve been nice to see (like you said) but at the end of the day, Its how your imagination perceives it, like I loved the aspect of “wow, so this is how life is now” because I know I would’ve been nervous and sick as crap being in his shoes as his character or her character in the beginning, I love movies that play with your mind like that which is why this movie is in my top 5
This is honestly one of my favorite movies. It has so many cool sci fi elements to it but also has some romance too. I can totally see why it's not for everyone. I think it's so interesting to think about what each of these characters must have been going through and what they were thinking as time went on. I like that thought provoking part of the movie. Like what would you do or think in either of these character's situation? Would you open up somebody's pod just to avoid being alone? It's such a tough moral dilemma.

definite no. As I see it, he was just the wrong guy in the wrong place for this. Others (not talking about me here) would probably enjoy being alone on a massive spaceship with all the leisure opportunities imaginable and not turn into a crazy stalker for a frozen Jennifer Lawrence. I mean, that bartender robot was a pretty cool dude to hang out with, wasn't he?
This movie is terrible only because they totally wrote it in the wrong order. Have you seen the video ‘Passengers Rearranged’ by the channel Nerdwriter1? It would have been so much better done this way

I think the first half of this movie is some of the best cinema of all time. But the instant the captain wakes up, the movie goes way downhill and loses itself. If they stuck with the original plot line of him trying to win her back, I think this movie could be one of the greatest ever
This movie is an interesting exercise in exploring people's different moral foundations. If I were in Aurora's position and someone woke me up because they were lonely, I would be pretty pissed. Perhaps forever. However, knowing that the selfish act inadvertently saved my life as well as the lives of 5000 people would smooth things over for me. Obviously for others it wouldn't, which means some are more focused on the intention rather than the outcome.
Underrated movie.
I would have liked it better if her pod had actually failed too... but that they made it a decision adds some layers that I didn't really think about until later that night after watching the movie. We saw Jim's descent into despair. We saw him almost off himself but his survival instinct took over and forced him to flee from that option. Human beings are social beings and he gave into that need for human interaction. It wasn't the ethical thing to do, but then that wasn't the point of it being part of the movie. The reason it was a plot point was to make us question if we would have been able to do things differently. But there are still more layers to the story.
She didn't just up and forgive him. She spent time before learning the truth getting to know him and developing feelings for him. That's why his betrayal hurt so much more. Because she cared and then discovered the betrayal. During that time, she was also basically blogging about fate and just being along for the journey of life rather than being in control of life and other such philosophical ideas. I don't think she simply forgave him or felt sorry for the idea of him being alone again if she took the auto doc. I think that the time they spent separated gave her time to think about what she would have done in his position. And then she thought back onto her philosophical musings and realized that if his pod hadn't malfunctioned and if she hadn't been there to help him, they would have ALL been dead. I don't think she forgave him easily, but I think she WANTED to forgive him partly from getting to know him but also partly because she would want forgiveness herself if she had been in his position and made the same choice, and lastly because she saw an opportunity for them to have a very unique life together, and she obviously wrote about it. Maybe I'm just rationalizing tho because I majored in writing and minored in psych lol. Maybe she was rationalizing. Whatever the reason, I think it added some deep layers to the story that it otherwise wouldn't have.

The goal for every movie is to hopefully get 90% of the audience approval. Of course, that's not always the case. Yes there are some issues with this movie that would've made more sense if they went in a different direction but the same could be said with every movie ever made. What if [insert movie title] didn't have [insert actor name] playing the role of [insert character name]? Would it be better or worse? In the end, how a movie's storyline is presented to us will ultimately be reviewed by people with different views in love, morality, ethics... It all comes down to personal preference. I enjoy it enough to watch it again, others not so much. It is what it is.
Passengers has the framework of an intelligent movie, and they ignored the framework to put all the focus on a ham-fisted romance. It's all just a bit contrived, and they don't earn the choice at the end.
As far as Jennifer Lawrence movies go, my favorite role of hers remains the one that put her on the map. "Winters Bone" is a great movie to check out if you have not yet seen it.

I think the romance wasn't a bad choice; I think thats the main point of the movie, it deals with themes of loneliness and makes us question selfishness in reaction to unbearable loneliness. If this was the major theme, then the whole ship malfunctioning storyline wasn't really necessary. Also, I think that putting a male and a female lead together in this situation (stuck together for a lifetime) it would be pretty strange if a romance did not develop.. human beings have fundamental needs for intimacy and sex, so I don't think they'd want to be just friends and live a sexless life.. So that part seems pretty realistic to me.
I loved how it started, the original idea is just brilliant. I wasn't as hyped up when he finally cracked and woke her up. Ethically it's all so messed up. Of course the story makes it so had he not woken someone up they all would have died. Typical Hollywood ending: and they lived happily ever after... So much potential wasted not being any more original. I enjoyed the movie but it's not one I am likely to sit down and watch from start to finish ever again. ...And I know I'm late to this party, I only watched it last night. I came out of it looking for what anyone else thought about it as I wasn't as pleased as I had hoped I would be from the beginning all the way up until he saw her for the first time and that's how I ended up here. 🤷♂
I like the movie very much. Watched 5 times or so and still haven't get tired of it. Why? That shows how insignificant we are comparing to the universe, and still we can be happy "living a little". Thanks for the review. Was enjoyable 🙂

I suspect if the movie had been made like the trailer set it up to be, we all would have hated Chris Pratt’s guts, and that’s no fun. The way they did it made us more sympathetic to Pratt’s character’s motivations
If Jim hadn't of woken up Aurora every person on the ship would have died. If Gus and Aurora hadn't of woken up they wouldn't have been able to fix the ship - as Jim couldn't do it on his own. So the moral dilemma is who Jim chose to wake up - he had to wake someone, otherwise everyone is dead, otherwise Jim lives the rest of his life on his own and 8,000 people die. Imagine when the public found out - the question would be why didn't he wake anyone up? Flip this round - what if it was Aurora who woke up on her own, she chooses Jim because he has engineering skills but also happens to be hot - the same outcome at the end? I'm sure we wouldn't have a scene of Jim punching her when he finds out, rightly so. There is not a human alive who wouldn't do the same thing, for example in cave diving there are many examples when divers diving with their best friend or family member have run out of air and fought the other diver for their air ending up killing them. The moment of death, survival instincts take over everything in the panic. Those people have ended up charged with murder and live with the shame and guilt forever - they can't believe what they did, some ending in suicide.
I get the feeling that your empathy for Aurora is quite pronounced and your empathy for Jim is almost non-existent. One wonders how you would react if suddenly sentenced to the absolute certainty of being completely alone for the rest of your life.
You're correct, I definitely feel much more strongly about Aurora having her life basically chosen for her on her behalf over Jim's isolation, especially with the way Jim went about it. If it were me, I would have done what Jim did and tried to get into the crew area. Obviously that failed, so then I would wait to see if someone else's pod eventually failed like mine did and if time went on and on and that didn't happen, then I would end my own life once the isolation got bad enough. I would not decide the future of another person's life without their consent.
@@kaiielle So, your claim is that you would think only about other peoples' welfare and commit suicide. I think I'll take that claim with a grain of salt. I cannot know, but my best guess would be that I would have woken up a member of the staff, since it was their equipment that put me in the position and they might even have a solution. I can tell you that under no circumstances would I kill myself.
@@brandonflorida1092 Oh I'm sorry, I thought we were treating this situation the same. Jim couldn't get into the crew section, so I was approaching this like the same would happen to me. Obviously if I could wake up a member of the crew, I would do that and not kill myself. I think anyone would. And to your grain of salt, why is that not believable to you? People choose to end their own lives every day for a variety of reasons.
@@kaiielle I didn't get that the crew were sleeping in a separate area. That's actually poor planning by the designers.
@@kaiielle Of course in that case then Aurora - and every other person on board - would have ended up dying when the ship fell apart. But I guess that's a small price to pay for feeling all virtuous and self-righteous.

I can't tell you how many times I've searched specifically for a reaction to this movie...go ahead and try it; you won't find one. So I'm looking forward. The design team on this movie was brilliant. Wait till you see the production design. :)
The channel Storm Akina put out a reaction to this at the end of August of 2021, so well over a year ago at this point. So I'm the second reaction. There are many trailer reactions otherwise!
The movie is about fate putting 2 people (3 if you include Fishburne's character) into place to save everyone else, then fate giving her the option of going back to sleep or staying awake and writing their story.
I completely agree with you in this one. It's a good movie but the love story was not a good choice. Such a shame because the story had a great potential. I'd love this to be rather a psychological horror just from Aurora's perspective. The movie would start with her waking up and later figuring out that Jim did it. Possibilities would be endless from there. It'd also make sense, someone spending years alone would lead to insanity.
That would have been such a great perspective and probably would have resulted in me liking the movie a lot more, to be honest.
You do realise you're watching a movie about two people locked in a spaceship together right? All these possibilities you talk about are practically non existent. Aurora either accepts and forgives Jim for what he did and they live together happily, or she kills him which means she lives out the rest of her life completely alone in space. There's literally no other places for the story to go other than those two options.
Jim earned her forgiveness after she saw him lay down his life so she and 5000 other innocent people could continue to live. She is a decent person, would she leave him alone on the ship after that ? She knew she will find no better man on any planet ever and Jim is lucky not to have fallen on a woke feminist.
Passengers is yet another sci fi warning about the dangers (or at least the overreliance) of AI. As we're finding out today AI is not perfect and makes mistakes and/or is capable of breaking down.
So, as many others, I will state my opinions to counter yours. Not that yours are wrong. This is a movie about an ethical dilemma and the results of it, and that does not have a concrete answer. Yes, Jim was completely in the wrong to wake Aurora. But once that choice was made, there was no undoing it. I see Aurora's actions at the end as an example of forgiveness, and how you cannot entirely judge people on their worst action. That should always be taken into account, but it is not the whole story. Aurora had seen Jim's worst actions, but also the rest of his actions. She had seen him working to fix things. She had heard from the android how hard it had been for him to make that choice. And she had a small taste of the loneliness that he had experienced. She understood, and forgave him for his one BIG mistake. I do think it was a bit awkward to have the one way to put her back into stasis, but I also get why they felt that was needed for the movie. Forgiveness can be asked for, but ultimately it can only be granted by the one who was harmed. It does not mean that the action is forgotten, but it does mean you can move past it.
There also is the aspect that she did not want him to be alone again. Maybe she did forgive him, but she might not have been able to trust him being alone again. It is kind of like if you had a friend who was addicted to cocaine, but then broke free. You can forgive them for their actions during that time, but that also does not mean you would let them stay in a house that had a room full of cocaine. Even if they thought they were better, you should not leave them with that temptation. Part of her staying was for romantic love, but another part was supportive love.
As for the murder question, that is a very interesting debate. He robbed her of her future, but did it in an interesting way, that did not directly kill her. He actively took an action that he knew would alter her life, and prevent her from living the life that she expected. By many definitions, that would count as murder, but he also did not cut her life short, in the sense that she still lived until she died of natural causes. I actually lean towards calling it murder, but the fact that she still got to live a life, albeit not the one she had planned, keeps me from whole heartedly saying it.
Anyway, I really enjoyed your reaction, and the best thing about the movie is that it does start these interesting discussions.

I think the movie would have been better if Jim died 3/4 of the way through. Then it follows Aurora on her own journey into extreme solitude. Ending on her trying to decide whether or not to open a stranger's pod to alleviate her own suffering. They don't need to show her doing it and frankly I think it would be best left ambiguous.
I can't say I love this movie, but I did like it. I thought it was a great story. Sorry but I disagree with pretty much everything you said at the end there. I can totally see why he would do what he did, and I also think the romance was a good addition and very believable. Oh, and Star Wars is the best space movie! 🤣🤣
I consider Star Wars more space fantasy and not science-fiction. ☺️

Anyone who says they wouldn't wake someone up has never been alone. Your mind changes and you can't escape it when alone. Y'all are liars saying you wouldn't.
Aurora had no choice but to forgive and kindly offer herself to Jim as a gift and as gratitude for doing the right thing for the sake of everyone on board.
How does Aurora go back to sleep at the end ?? When Jim could easily wreck the ship right before he dies in say 50 years out of spite and depression.
It’s crazy to think Jim could even keep his sanity for 50 years alone on the ship without suffering deep depression after also losing Aurora and be expected to keep an eye out for the safety of everyone ?? Hahaha, Aurora better understand her role quick and remain by Jim’s side nice and quiet. She’d be mad to go to sleep and let this man loose on that ship
I did not see you bored at all during the movie. If a movie entertains me, it’s a win.
So Passengers is not about falling in love. It’s about forgiveness. She had to forgive him for her love to be real. If they both were victims of malfunctioning science there would have been no compelling drama. Boring!! In the end, each of their dreams were fulfilled. He lived out his life with the woman he loved fixing things and she found her soulmate and had a story no one else could write. This movie masterfully sets the expectation that the journey to Homestead II is the goal and then flips it over to show us that a fulfilling life is the real goal.
I can understand this a little, but it still bothers me a lot.
Jim didn't decide to wake up. He would have airlocked himself and they would have all died. That is if he didn't go mad and actively trying to destroy the ship himself.

I had two major gripes with this movie:
1. A single year is a really short time to resort to what Jim did. I would have made it 10 (or even 20), although I understand that it would've made it tough to fit with the age of the cast.
Still, at least make it 5 years or something ffs.
And I think it has to be said: the post pandemic point of view really puts "OMG 1 year alone!" in the "hold my beer" category for a lot of people.
A LONG time passing would've made the "act of desperation from an otherwise good person in a weakened state of mind" plot point more-believable.
Makes you question what would you do in the same situation.
As it is, It's really hard to shake the feeling that Jim is just a major creep.
2. The ending.
I agree with you, she should've gone back into the autodoc, but even going with the actual plot's decisions:
Why not use the autodoc in turns to save up 45 years each, then spend a happy elderly marriage together while also bathing in the glory of their "saviours of the ship" status (not to mention the huge amount of money they would get from suing the traveling company)?
There are other minor issues, but it's a movie and in the end it's still fun and I like it. Also the cast has good chemistry (Laurence Fishburne almost steals the movie :P).
With that said: if you really want to watch a great "alternative" space movie, I thoroughly recommend the movie: "Moon" (2009).

Your gripes with the movie are interesting.
To point 1, You make a good argument about 1 year being on the short side for Jim's actions. But I also take note that the ship was not going to last even 3 years. Also, the reason Jim woke up is because of the initial hull breach and computer damage, which began the cascade of failures. There is the thought also that Aurora and many other passengers may have eventually woken up prematurely as well, as the ship's computers continued to fail. Jim got off lucky as he woke up at the beginning in good health. But by the time Gus woke, also because of system failures, the systems were at a point where anyone else who woke up might have also suffered a painful slow death due to the systems failures in the pods. This is all before the ship would have eventually exploded. Of course Jim could not have foreseen this. Not really trying to justify his actions. But his waking, as well as the subsequent waking of Aurora Gus, almost seemed like they were destined to save the ship. Even if it meant sacrificing their lives. At least that is how I see it.
To point 2, Also a good point. Perhaps they could have time-shared the AutoDoc in intervals. Like 10 or 20 years at a time. However, and I think this likely, using the AutoDoc might have been a one shot deal.
I'd like to think the writers would have considered that. Otherwise Jim and Aurora would have thought of that as an option. Since they didn't, I am guessing it is a one shot deal. It uses resources that can't be replenished. It also seems like that is the only AutoDoc on the ship. So while it is occupied, there would be no medical services available for the one left awake for many years.
Additionally It may not have been designed to be used like that multiple times. It's sleep pod function might only have been intended for short term medical use to suspend a critical patient until additional medical resources could be obtained. Then the AutoDoc resources reset and resupplied after the patient has been removed. Likely all of this taking place in the final 4 months of travel. This is just pure speculation of course.
I also agree that there are other minor issues, but they were over shadowed by a very engaging and entertaining story that was much more character driven than SciFi driven.
I'm still stuck on 1 year being a short amount of time alone. He tried to pass the time, but how long can you dance, play basketball, drink, or punch a bag for? I'm sure there were other things he could've done as well, but for a YEAR!?!?! Not interacting with anything but an android. Everyone has different tolerance levels. I'm not even sure what I would've done in the situation. Too scared to off myself, and my morals wouldn't have allowed me to wake anyone. I would've just been an insane old man talking to the voices in my head
I think it's not that kinda story, but this kinda story; a story about What if you're stranded and you can or not to drag a person with you and that moral ethical value base on what a realistic person would or wouldn't do in that scenario rather than what a typing HERO or JUSTICE or HONOR boy scout like fantasy character and not gonna lie, if I'm stuck like that and I'm good with hack and mechanical engineering i might be tempted. Or i could just use autodoc to put me into stasis.

I might be wrong but maybe this movie is more appealing to men than women. The science fiction side of it is possibly the aspect that gives this notion further credence. I think it somehow strikes an emotional cord that really resonates with a lot of people, but not all. I thought the relationship they developed and her choice to stay with him was enough to overcome all of the prior objections to the situation and relationship. It was a tough situation and you've got to put yourself in the guy's shoes. I know from psychological studies, men and women are triggered differently by by events and certain behaviours in a relationship, which is largely governed by evolutionary development, particularly when there is upset due to infidelity that can lead to serious consequences. I think the loyalty aspect of Jenifer Lawrence's character's choice at the end really resonates with a lot of men, and I don't mean that in a selfish way or whichever other way some people might try to twist this statement, like translating it to a current domestic situation (e.g. where a dominant partner forces the other to give up their friends, family and ambitions to monopolise them). This circumstance made it a clear cut decision that was of her own. What I am saying is that she loved him so much that faced with the choice and no pressure whatsoever, she willingly decided that he was the most important thing in her life. In a world where people have become so selfish and the divorce rate is 50%, I really appreciated the message this movie was putting out, even if other people see it very differently or think it is corny. Its like when people make their wedding vows they state "for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health", which basically means you don't abandon each other when the chips are down but instead provide support and make it through to the other side. At the end of the day I wanted what was best for them, whatever they chose, but I was happy that they chose to make it work and that they seemingly still had as good a life together as was possible.
Nope. As woman, I happen to like the Sci-fi side of it. In here it vasnt the best thing ever, by far, but its ok. And the only decent part of the movie. The 'romance' (streching the term harder then Lawrences swim-suit got stretched - love that thing, wish i culd get one that fits my phizique) side of it is my problem with it. Pratt's character is a selfish one. One year in isolation? Seriusly man? Big fucking deal. Theres times I'd pay money to be left alone for that long, given how anoying and clingy some people can get. Lawrence's character is too forgiving. Maybe its becauze I don't believe in spontaneus love (especialy not in these kinds of cirkumstances), but for her to just let him off the hook and 'love' him enough to just skip over a chance to get her life back on track in order to spend it with the guy who basicly took it away - yea no. No, not a chance. In hell. What he did is unforgivable. Maybe its because I'm not a 'typical' woman in many ways and and I dont get those 'care for a wounded puppy' urges. Even if the 'puppy' is as hot as Pratt. lol Oh and on that, I LOVE Pratt as an actor (and I wuldnt mind spending a year in isolation vith him ;) it sure wuldnt be boring hehe), but his character here realy rubs me the vrong way.

He didnt choose her at random, he picked her becauze she 'clicked' for him given the limited info avaliable, and decided he wanted a 'relationship' with this hot blonde petite writer-babe that made his cock twitch. Yea thats not how it works. And in proces, ruined her life plans. And she just forgives him?! Really? And they live happy-ever-after in a cop-out lame ending?

I think a better ending could have been Aurora choosing to go back to sleep, but then some way is discovered for Jim to go back to sleep as well. Then they wake up at the end with everybody else but she chooses to not get back together with him.

I often have trouble reading people, and reaction videos are actually helping me match up external stimuli with other people's expressions, both verbal and facial.
FWIW, I had much of the same thoughts concerning the ethics choices made in this film as you seem to have had.
I also think a more fitting end would have been for Jennifer's character to go back into hibernation for the remainder of the trip, leaving Chris's character alone.
The further ethical dilemma would have been whether or not he should have tricked her into going back into hibernation, and effectively undoing his first act that robbed her of her agency by committing a new act that did so again.
His was a chess game set up to lose.
There were no choices for him to make that would not have adversely impacted one or more other people.
I don't think what he did should be called murder. That's because 90% of the baggage that term contains does not apply here. Calling this case murder depreciates the severity of cases when a person is physically killed for malicious reasons.
I would probably take the position that his action of waking her up should be punished, but with consideration for the likely possibility that a reasonable person in the same circumstance would have responded similarly. However, I think he should also be punished for lying to her, which in my opinion was the only thing he did that he absolutely did not have to do. I'll cut him a lot of slack for waking her up since psychologically speaking, he was essentially deprived of free will, but I don't cut him slack for lying to her about it. A reasonable person could have easily just let her figure out what happened in shame instead of actively concocting a lie.
Actually Jim and Aurora could have been the lucky ones as who's to say that the Homestead planet could have been a hellhole instead of the paradise that was marketed, and the colonists would be stuck there. At least the "passengers" lived most of their lives in relative freedom and luxury.
At the same time all passengers and crew most likely would have perished had he not decided to wake her up because fixing the reactor was a 2 person job
Jim's interest in Aurora had parasocial beginnings but it developed into a natural enjoyment of her as they lived alone together on the ship. You could harp on the odds of two compatible people being in this situation but the extreme situation itself will force the compatibility. Aurora forgave Jim because she understood his desperation. He took away the future she had planned for herself but you'll notice that he didn't deny her being able to see her loved ones again or anyone she knew in her life. She had already made that decision when she left Earth on a centuries-long journey. He also sacrificed himself to save the other 5000-plus people on board and she had developed a strong connection with him during that year. She loved him, despite how he took away her future plans. In the end, she was still able to achieve her goal of "writing a story that no one else can tell". This is also Hollywood and more of a romance story than sci-fi, and a film where the two people were just friends for the next 70 years, living out their lives having idle conversations on this spaceship, would have been less memorable than a story without love.
I think the romantic relationship was inevitable 2 people are stuck on a ship for 90 more years that’s the only person u will ever see or talk to for the rest of your life anyone would fall in love

I don’t know if you’ve seen A Few Good Men, but there’s a good example of what you’re saying - two great looking actors (Demi Moore and Tom Cruise) who probably could’ve had great romantic chemistry and could’ve easily gone down that road...but don’t because in that film it was about something much bigger than any kind of relationship their characters could’ve had.

It would seem that this story takes place in a world where the Titanic disaster didn’t happen, otherwise these people shouldn’t have had the same arrogance that their great ship was completely destruction proof.
And there's also a huge problem with the whole ship being on auto-pilot for over a century with seemingly no ability to wake up crew if something goes wrong.

This is a love story that includes an ethical dilemma. It is a space movie last. No, it wasn't murder. The idea that anyone would sacrifice their dreams for love appalls you is a sad commentary on the selfishness of today's youth. Love IS sacrifice. Forgiveness is a sacrifice. I love this movie.

And I would 100% agree with your comments about love and sacrifice IF Aurora's pod had also failed, rather than her being cherry picked by him to be woken up and have the rest of her life decided for her, by him. Her deciding not to go back into hibernation at the end would probably have made a lot more sense in that case. Because of what Jim did, this "love" was formed under the umbrella of a monstrous lie, not unlike a person who cheats on their partner during an entire relationship. Though I would argue this situation is much worse and much less forgivable than cheating, but hey that's just me. If it's selfish for me to not sacrifice my dreams and goals for someone who lies to me, then so be it. 😂

What he did to Aurora wasn't right, but because he did they were able to save the ship and thousands of people in it. If he hadn't woken her up they would all be dead.
I loved the movie but I can totally see your point. The romance is far from perfect and to be honest I didn't need it to end like that... but I think the way they did it, it was the only available ending for them, given how hollywood movies seem to work.
I agree with every take but for me, the critics are defeated by the strengths of the movie. I really, really loved the acting, the characters, the ship, the mystery and the twist at the end... how much sense it made.
About the morals... that's hard as heck. I mean. Did he murdered her? Well, yeah. But he was under huge pressure. In his mental condition he was conditioned to act the way he did. His decision wasn't taken fully freely. Not really. Just like someone under a huge major depression chooses to take his own life, but that's not a decision taken coldly, fully thought. A person under major depression can't think clearly about these topics. The same way, the protagonist couldn't do it. He was drowning and he dragged her to the bottom. That doesn't make it "good", it's terrible... but it should be noted for his trial.

This wasn’t a great movie but I don’t think it was terrible either. I think it would have been better if it explored the moral dilemma more than just focus on the romance (although I’m sure studio execs thought differently). Because while I don’t know if I would do what Jim did, I understand why he did. Because if I were in his shoes I’d be terribly suicidal too. And I think it would have been more interesting if in the end she didn’t have an option to go back to hibernation. Because if I were in her shoes I don’t think I’d ever trust him enough to fall in love with him but I don’t think I could just totally ignore him either. I think that need for human connection (at some level) would win over.
They SHOULD have shown us where they were after the ship arrived. You know they were both dead, so unless they died at the same time, one of them did whatever burial thing they could. But the other would still be wherever they died. Would have been interesting to see who went first.

I felt that Jim's isolation should have been a few years. People who have been in extreme isolation tend to not make ethical choices. And it should have been a more instant choice and not spending months thinking it over. Then he could have talked to Arthur about what he did and still had that reveal moment.
I also thought that Aroura would have gone into hibernation at the end, but make a compromise that they switch every year but she would wake up when they arrived with Jim narrating something he wrote to her about why he didn't wake her up. To me that would have been a good redemption for Jim.

Honestly, I can totally see this movie being a guilty pleasure movie. I have a few of those myself where they're not spectacular movies but I still enjoy them for some reason. Sadly, I don't think this will be one of those for me.

you did not listen well to what was said in the movie... he clearly states why he choose her to wake.... and she was the one he stumbled upon right after he almost comitted suicide, and he fell in love with what he read about her writing after a year of utter loneliness. at that moment she was his salvation... and gus(lawrence fishbourne) stated it quite precisely, someone drowning will cling to all and everything to stay afloat even if he pulls someone other under, it´s not right, but they will do it.

What if you wake up an attractive person with an interesting bio, but then turns out they're dumb as a rock and just boring? Or a creeper? And now you can't get away from them, because they're lonely too. Or tell this entire story with two ordinary-looking people, maybe older, or an age difference, or two men or two women. And then work together to solve the problem without the sex and romance angle. This is one of those movies that had potential, and then it got sandbagged by casting two attractive young stars as the leads. LOVE the ship, though!

your criticism of his choice to wake her, i can somehow understand, but i feel it comes from someone who has never experienced loneliness, especially over a long time..... i can tell you, it breaks you. i cant see the argument for horniness, because lets face it, horniness is only a fraction of time in any long or longer relationship.
so no matter who he woke up, the ethical aspect wouldent change. in the end he couldent have saved the ship alone. so him waking someone saved all other lives.
and if youre going to wake someone it might as well be someone who you feel (with the limited information that you have) you could connect with.
i also think that as a woman there might be a different perspective. because a lot of woman feel comfortable with physical closeness to other females, holding each other, cuddling.
men hardly ever have that physical closeness with each other. yet most do still desire this intemacy. so waking a man would never completely solve the lonliness. so even if he never had a sexual relationship with her , it would still be the better choice, unless she was a hard core bi... .
theoretically he could have looked for a female crew member with tecnical skills. but then the point of the film would be lost......the dilemma. and im not sure wether he would have had access to the crew hybernation pods. i always had the feeling that they were in another closed off section.

To your point of "men hardly ever have that physical closeness with each other", this is something that I wish men would be more open to doing with each other in a non-sexual way as I think it would help reduce how much toxic masculinity is out there in the world right now. While there are some men out there that do, generally speaking it's certainly not as common as women. I do think if two men found themselves in the situation presented in this movie, they would end up being physically close, whether it ends up sexual or not. Mainly because there is nobody around to judge their actions, which seems to be why men don't really do that with each other in the first place. This is just me on the outside looking in and having watched some videos of men talking about this. Obvs can't speak to the experience.

I love your reaction style and while there are lots of things we disagree on, I appreciate that you justify your opinion, telling us not just that you like or dislike something but why you feel that way. I don't often go to theaters, usually just when there's a new installment in a series I enjoy. But I frequently will look for something else that seems interesting that's playing at the same time and make it a double feature. So I went to see Rogue One and after watching a film set in space where a small group of characters made sacrifices to save many others and all of them died at the end, I walked down the hall and saw Passengers...
This is definitely a film that asks you to think about what you would do in this situation. He wakes up alone and spends several months in complete isolation before his research on trying to reactivate his pod let's him know how to deactivate another. Then he spends several more months wrestling with the question of whether he should. Without question it's sentencing her to death, and I have to imagine that he's told himself that it's a line he won't cross. But every day gets a little worse and the temptation is always there, and each day he needs to deny it. The problem is that once he gives in, he can't undo it.
Yes, there are weaknesses in the story, and I think they could have made the film stronger by having him articulate that struggle more. Perhaps more journal entries referencing the passage of time, perhaps even adding more time, 3-4 years before he gives in. Similarly at the end each offering the other more chances to go into the autodoc. But I enjoyed the movie nonetheless.
If I could write the ending, I would probably have it substantially the same, but after deciding to stay together, advance 5-10 years and one gets injured and the goes to the infirmary. As the autodoc heals them, the other locks them in suspension and then dies alone. The movie ends with the survivor telling their story to the rest of the colony.

Interesting. So the *trailer* shows the movie from the point of view of Aurora, if she never found out the truth. And kaiielle thinks that would have been a better movie. I understand why she thinks it's problematic, but for me that's what makes it good. The moral conundrum of the movie is the bit where Jim is trying to stop himself waking up the woman he fancies, and fails to do that. The emotion of that is what I really remember from watching the film. Though I think it is a fair criticism that the film gets into the "romance" aspect of the situation after that, and basically glosses over the problem by putting the ship in danger and having her forgive him because she's scared of him dying.
Given that humans are by and large social creatures, I guarantee you that the vast majority of people would've done the same thing Chris Pratt's character did.

One thing that I agree with you on is the Para social stuff. Once you laid it all out, Jim feels more like a Stalker getting what he wants, which IS true. I honestly would have enjoyed seeing where the story would go if Jim had become way more of an antagonist, just for the sake of interest and almost horror of being in the situation for Aurora.
It would be a completely different story sure, but it would be interesting. I still enjoyed the movie for what it is, but I agree with you too.
This movie was poorly cast. Overall I think it's a fine story, and whatever else I think about the actors as people, they are good at their job, but this story with these actors doesn't work. They could have modified the story slightly to make it work with Pratt and Lawrence, but Pratt really only plays lovable goofballs and that's not what this character should be. Jennifer Lawrence isn't the worst choice they could have made, but she tends to come off as initially adversarial rather than overly trusting as this character should have been. I read a review once of "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" that said the leads of "Passengers" should have been swapped with "Valerian", Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne and I can't say that wouldn't have been an improvement to both movies.

I think it's incorrect to think Jim could've woken up someone more targeted by their occupation and it still be as dramatic as it was - for example he wakes up an aero-space engineer because he needs help fixing stuff "well get over it, I woke you up cos i needed your help" now the one who got woken up looks like a bit of a d*ck because of the situation the ships in and they're not gonna help. Aurora was woken up for a completely selfish reason and that was the only way that conflict was going to be as one-sided as it was and the only way that dilemma was going to be displayed, for her to even attack him in his sleep because he woke her up to be with her.. that is apart of the dilemma he's in, there's no one in that passenger bay that is going to help him so he goes with someone that would help his mental state. keep in mind at that time the ship had it's problems but it wasn't going into complete disarray yet.

" its honestly one of the better batman movies you will find and everything fans loved about his take is demonstrated in that film.

I believe you lose some importants points. E.g. Aurora didn't decide to continue awake to be a companion to Jim. She felt in love with him. Another example. He didn't make a rational choice about who he would wake up. He saw her for the 1st time just randomly. He didn't make a selection. You also missed the moment when Gus explained Aurora about drowning people's behavior. That's real. It's not fictional. Actually. You should read some works about experiments with confined people. Basically, these experiments always show that confined people change completely their behavior. I believe you judged a lot of aspects of the movie with no much understanding about it.
I really enjoyed this review But I do have to disagree with her criticism If your looking at this movie as just a movie yes KL. is correct there does not have to be a romantic aspect between the male and female leads. If your looking at this movie as real life yes they do have to hook up they are the only two people on a ship for the rest of their lives humans are a social species 99.9% of us would go crazy if we didn't have that need met and we have a sexual drive as well. If I was in Jim's situation I would totally do what Jim did and feel the guilt about it as he did.
I think it is a very poignant movie. I have two thoughts about what you said, 1. People basically love a love story, and this is really what this film builds up to be. I year alone would drive anybody to make irrational decisions and, although you may be able to live without anybody else for the rest of your life, I think most people would agree that it is a difficult prospect. Jim was extremely unlucky to be chosen to be woken up, and may have felt slightly justified in waking up Aurora with these feelings of fate destroying his own life. 2. Not every relationship runs perfectly, and we sometimes have to overlook or forgive things our partner has done in order to not totally destroy any chance of happiness, and, while I don't want to get all religious on you, Christianity is basically about forgiveness, and our world (society and possibly our civilisation) is currently being destroyed by a reward and blame culture. Every service we get we are instantly presented with a questionaire on 'how did we do?' which, while it does improve service up to a point, giving people every opportunity to complain, it seems to me has created 'complaining culture' which is not good. The inablility for people to forgive and foget what has happened in the past is being actively encouraged to be dragged up, again and again, until it drives us insane (and it is). In this movie, between them, Jim and Aurora become the heroes who between them join to save the entire passengers and crew. How could she leave him, go back to sleep, and live knowing that he wasn't there anymore, when, in truth she would be losing the person that, in the end, she forgave truly loved, in spite of his faults. Why wouldn't she want to spend the rest of her life with him, knowing that they both had saved the entire ship and it's passengers and crew? It would be bliss, Adam and Eve living in a Garden of Eden making the most of what they were blessed with. So, I think you may have missed the point slightly that's all, it's about overcoming our failing and forgiveness, and seeing the good and not the bad in people. This is what our current world is losing faster than you know.

This movie is a masterpiece on so many levels. They would all be dead without Jim waking Aurora up. Also, Jim is not responsible for waking her up, the Homestead company are the ones who were required by contract to keep Jim asleep for 120 years and failed. Whatever Jim does after waking up by error is on them. Like the fox released in the hen house does what foxes do, so did Jim do what man does and is not responsible for anything. It is therefore the Homestead company whom Aurora signed a contract with who failed at keeping her and Jim asleep for 120 years, they are to blame.

@@kaiielle, Yeah, I’m also thinking when he woke her up without consent and then took her, that was real creepy. But when she literally saved his life and brought him back from the dead, he became hers and she wasn’t gonna give that up for no feminists. Personally, I can’t wrap my head around why he did not wake up 2 or 3 chicks to enjoy. He could have reviewed several candidates’ resumés on a points scale and select the top ones for his enjoyment. Once they got over it, the girls would eventually compete for his love and affection. What do you think ?

Thank you for absolutely nailing my problems with this movie. I was actively angry when I left the theater. It wasn't just his behavior and waking her up - but how the movie treated the situation and how she reacted. Ugh! Uhg!

I agree completely with everything except for one thing. When Jim had the ability to wake someone up, it could not of been one of the crew members with a ID band that could have gotten him onto the captains bridge. If you look at where the crew command pods where held, it was in a different section of the ship near or on the command ring. They were protected by the same security door that Jim couldn't penetrate. I wanted to bring that up because I was thinking the same thing when I first watched it, like.. why wake up Aurora? I thought Jim was literally just being horny instead of pro active when he decided to wake her up instead of one of the command crew that could have helped him. If you look at the crew pods on the command ring at the very end when the captain and the others are waking up you see one of the pods was already open, which was Gus's pod, and it was behind the security door. Jim was literally stuck, and he wanted to connect with someone he felt he could connect with. Personally, if I was Jim, I would have looked on the ships crew/passenger registry and tried to see if the Avalon had an embryo stasis program onboard and try to become a father. You have everything on that ship and more to support a living organism + most importantly you wouldn't be alone in life and have a purpose to still exist, not to mention the best part is that your bringing a life that never had any prior memories or understanding of what life is. The child you would bring up would see their situation with whole new perspectives, and there wouldn't be nearly as much guilt if any bringing up a child or two on that ship. Not to mention that child as a real old person might live long enough to see homestead two. Idk if that would be a sick joke or a chance at complete admiration to witness life in a biological sense instead of living you whole life on a tin can forever traveling. Just a thought.

Try not to talk over the dialogue, please. And in the end, she should be happy Jim woke her up because if he didn't she would have died anyway. I loved the isolation of this movie. And as for your thought on the romantic relationship, I disagree I think since Jim did choose Arura in my opinion being alone with somebody for that length of time it's inevitable that a romantic type feeling would fester.

Without her being awake they ALL would have died. It took 2 to vent the heat. You have a kind of a weird view of falling for someone. In the short time the movie showed there may have been more he learned about her. Hope I'm not on a ship with you someday. And there can be love in sci fi. Guess I won't be watching anymore cold hearted reviews.
Out of all my reactions on the channel this is one of the movies I disliked the most. Not sure if it's your first time here or not, but I don't pretend to love everything I watch here and I'll always be honest about what I think of a story and characters. This one didn't work for me, but a lot of commenters have given me some great perspective on why they love it!
It's interesting how disposable men are throughout all of history. It's exemplified by kaiielle's "see you never" comment. Sure, this man F%@ked you over, but guess what, not really, you can choose to get back your entire plan with the horrible interruption. So, now that you can choose to leave him _to die_ the most horrific death inevitable suicide from lonliness or you can have compassion and stay with him, hell not even as bf/gf would work. You could use that time to see if you could build a new autodoc or pod, copying the existing one. Far be it for a woman to sacrifice to save lives, that's only men's job.
Hmm, women sacrifice to save lives all the time and have done so throughout history. You must have forgotten that we give birth to new humans to keep the species going and that can come at the cost of our own lives, especially in the days before modern medicine and improved healthcare.
By the time the ship got back to earth it would be an outdated piece of junk
