  • This is a movie reaction to my first time watching Pulp Fiction, released in 1994 and directed by Quentin Tarantino. I finally knocked this off my list after wanting to watch it for many years! This sure was... interesting LOL. I think that's the best word to describe it. Performances by all were great, especially Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman and Bruce Willis. Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching!

I appreciate the fact that you recognize that some of the parts you didn't like about the movie come down to personal preference, a lot of reviewers confuse what they don't like with being bad movies.
It's worth remembering that at the time of the movies release, nothing had ever been made like this before, it was a completely different style of movie to anything that'd come before it.

Tarantino films (especially this one, and Reservoir Dogs) are extremely deep examinations of human nature, and of individual characters. As others have said, the pacing is of a different time. It's something I miss honestly. Films that weren't afraid to take the longer path, because the sights were better. I am also of the opinion that art imitates life, and there are a great many distasteful and unfortunate things that happen in life. The last thing we should ever want is for art to force its message to conform to the current prevailing sensibilities. When people never see bad things in any context, they have no idea what to expect when bad things happen in front of them.

This film is really not for those whose sensibilities are fragile. At the movie theater, the scene that got the biggest laugh was when Marvin's head was blown off by Vega in the car. I think this is a masterpiece and the dialogue is superb. What brings the movie whole is the final scene where Julius quits the business and one realizes that Vega will be doomed by continuing his lifestyle. Thank you for your reaction!

Tarantino's films are grounded in characters and conversation + a wealth of 20th century pop culture references. They weren't rushing to some genre plot point. (In fact, PULP FICTION is *about* genre plot points and tropes--and subverting them.) If the characters and conversation don't secure your investment, everything will definitely seem "drawn out." Like a lot of 20th century films, Tarantino's were designed for the darkened theater/big screen, before watching movies on phones was even a notion. We're in a different world now, for sure. Younger viewers tend to see movies as an idle distraction, a place to go shopping for fresh memes. In my day we had to walk to school in the snow uphill both ways, etc. 👴🏼 BUT, having been there in '94, I can say that the way Tarantino's early films slowed things down was shock even to '90's audiences, who associated crime movies with action thrillers. His interest in people and their quirks made him stand out from the pack.

That, and also Q is so in love with his own dialog (justly so, IMO), that he can't bear to leave any of it on the cutting room floor. hehe
In this movie, the only scene that I thought was excessively long was the Butch/Fabienne "pot-belly" scene. That could've been half as long as it was. But besides that, I thought the scenes were the right length.

I saw this movie when it came out and it blew
me away! It was so unique in so many ways but also reminiscent of 70’s crime shlock. The language was for me very realistic for the times. I can see how it could be excessive for many but I found it entertaining. This brought John Travolta back into the spotlight after some flops. The violence and chaos was rightfully shocking. I consider the slower scenes to be all about being in the moment. While the viewer doesn’t get the full context it’s kind of a mystery as to where it’s going. Most people didn’t have cell phones or the internet back then so that wasn’t even an option.

The strength of Quentin is that he's very much into what he's into. He doesn't have a problem about shaking things up a little and loves pulling stuff from old genres and movies he likes. He's got great taste in music.
The weakness of Quentin is that he thinks he's more clever than he is. He's a film fan and has zero problem stealing stuff from fringe or old movies he likes. Almost nothing he does is original, but a slight take or homage on some other movie or style. He's pretentious and his dialog comes across in the same way Kevin Smith's movies do at times: like he's pontificating through his characters and trying to be cool and clever for their own sake instead of for the story.

PULP FICTION was the first Non-STAR WARS movie that I ever got a poster for ( it's the poster of Jules and Vincent holding there guns out to shoot that kid in the room - in black & white ). • @gluuuuue

I'll say although Tarantino's dialogue seems brilliantly casual and unrelated to the plot, they actually give a lot of subtle glimpses and insights into the personalities of the characters-what they each care about, how they deal with and react to different situations-and this goes to an interesting issue of why Jules lives apparently managing to actually quit "the life" as he says, while Vincent ends up dead.
And while you shouldn't feel compelled to re-watch something you didn't enjoy, I do think if you did so, particularly after watching some more Tarantino, such as Reservoir Dogs, you'll observe all the characters are very much telling you who they are and that this ties in to their ultimate fates.

Quintin has a distinct style that you either like or you don’t. Ultraviolence and extreme profanity are expected. So are great soundtracks, non-linear storytelling (which was rare back when this film was produced), and a unique cinematography that provide an amazing and unique landscape for viewers. He is known for the verbal sparring between characters which can be viewed as very entertaining or unnecessarily long scenes. Kill Bill has all of these things, but a lot more of it (much longer run time, bigger budgets so his ability to produce stunning and unsettling visuals are expanded). He first started talking with Uma about a “revenge film” when they were making Pulp Fiction. If you weren’t impressed with Pulp Fiction, and you were staring at your watch in this movie, I fear you will be doing a lot more of that in Kill Bill. I view both Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill as classic movies but they aren’t for everyone.

See I don't understand people who don't like deliberate thought out cinematic shots to tell a story or not like when a director lets a film breathe. Or keeps on a single shot.
Are we not beyond filmmaking 101 that needs to move a story forward every second just for the sake of doing so, forsaking diverse pacing and audience anticipation?
I basically don't understood how someone does not have their jaw dropped the entire time during this movie. Mine was when i saw it in the theater.
One of the most cinematic experiences I ever had in a theater (also Goodfellas and Boogie Nights, all 3 tied for #1).
Those 3 movies might seem cliche now but at the time the cineamtic experience was a combination of perfect storytelling meets perfect choices of a director meets pefect pacing and you just knew automatically from second 1 you were in good hands. And on 2nd viewing knew it was the hands of a master storyteller.
It boggles my mind that anyone else has a different experience, a visceral cinematic experience. I know thats life and that's on me but it still boggles my mind. 😊

It never sat right with me that Samuel L. Jackson was nominated for Best Supporting Actor while Travolta was nominated for Best Actor. There's no way that Travolta deserved that honor over Jackson. Jackson's character actually had one hell of an arc. Travolta's character doesn't really have an arc. Very good and honest reaction, Kaiielle. I don't think that this has anything to do with what era this movie was made, it's just that this is how Quentin Tarantino makes his movies.
While I do think that Tarantino is overrated as a director, I think he's an excellent writer.
I think that Pulp Fiction is one of Tarantino's best films. If I had to pick a favorite segment, I would go with the "Gold Watch" segment. Very intense.
If you choose to see more from Tarantino, then be prepared for more pointless dialogue and long slow shots. If that kind of camera work bores you, then you will have a very difficult time with Spaghetti Westerns, like ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, or THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY.
If you were even entertaining the idea of watching them.

By the way, KILL BILL, is ridiculously long and very overrated, in my opinion.

Hot take :) Times have changed since the '90s that is certainly true due in part to this movie. Along with Reservoir Dogs there was literally a revolution in how movies were made, they didn't really make movies like this before and Tarantino made it a whole new genre. Many have tried to duplicate and most fail. You can see his inspiration in many modern movies and directors, you can see it in there cuts Guy Ritchie and Edgar Wright are very heavily influenced. Nowadays it's done to death, but I suspect for those of us that saw them in the theatre when they were fresh and new may have a different understanding. Personally I believe this and the afore mentioned movie to be some of the most influential film making in history. Love your reaction, look forward to seeing more :)

I agree with one thing you are thinking about Pulp Fiction. The whole Marvin getting his head blown off part was totally unneeded. It and the cleaner part were just padding the movie to no purpose. You really should watch "Jackie Brown" More of a main stream Tarantino film (directed not written) with a Very Strong performance by Pam Greer who seems to be the Pawn stuck in the middle between the police and the criminals...with an unexpected twist or 3. All the violence is pretty well off screen. A really great Film Noir throwback.

My all time favorite movie behind only Boogie Nights.
I can totally understand why you gave it a middle of the road review.
I was raised in the 70's and 80's and was brought up on these types of movies when realism was king and not every movie ended with a happy ending.
70's and the 90's were the golden age of film IMHO.
And QT made some of the best movies ever made, but like music, movies are subjective and not objective. That's why my fav directors are QT, The Coens and Stanley Kubrick. Sad, and realistic type movies move me as much as movies with a happy ending
    To each their own.

It's definitely not a movie for everyone. And you simply can't force yourself to enjoy something. I like that you're honest about it. I rarely watch the discussion that people have after a reaction but for some reason your explanations and reasoning why you liked and disliked such and such part of the movie kept me interested :)
As for subtitles, I'm actually glad that you watch all your movies with them on, because so do I. I do it for a different reason (to make sure I don't miss anything). A lot of movies have whispered dialogue and very loud/aggressive music so it can be hard to understand everything. Then there are some actors or characters with very thick accents or poor enunciation and you're never 100% sure of what they say. And sometimes your ears play tricks on you (I'm bilingual, but English is not my native language).
A good example of this happening for me in Pulp Fiction is the famous Ezekiel speech by Jules. I've seen that particular scene on TH-cam several times before actually watching the movie for the first time. Obviously, the times I've seen it on TH-cam, it never had subtitles, so I always thought he said "And you will know my name is the LAW when I lay my vengeance upon thee". Only when I watched the movie on Netflix with subtitles on did I realize that all this time, he was saying "And you will know my name is the LORD when I lay my vengeance upon thee". And then I felt dumb 😂

Disney bought Miramax/Dimension in 1993 and the Weinsteins ended up as figureheads which upset Harvey who claimed that he and his brother were being bullied by Disney (Hardy Har Har!), Both stuck it out until 2005 and then left (taking Dimension with them as they owned the name completely--But Disney owns ALL Dimension films made between 1993 and 2005 which means they own "the Crow" and the original "Scream" series among other movies) and started their own company called "The Weinstein Company". Disney held on to Miramax until they sold it in 2010 along with their own companies Touchstone and Hollywood as they decided not to do adult films anymore and concentrate on doing just Disney/Pixar-friendly movies.
