    When Angier cloned himself, there was no "original" or "copycat" Angier. They are both 100% Angier. Same person, same consciousness. Same everything. So every night he stepped into that machine, he was fully prepared to either commit suicide or perform the prestige. Trippy concept.

    This line has so much significance when you know the twist.
    Borden: "He came in to demand an answer and I told him the truth. That I have fought with myself over that night, one half of me swearing blind that I tied a simple slipknot, the other half convinced that I tied the Langford double. I can never know for sure."

    1) Technically, there are no clones. As Tesla told Angier, all the hats are his. The machine creates a paradox where the same person exists as two separate people w/ their own consciousness. It's not even a guarantee that the original consciousness still exists after the first time that he used the machine. But in that first instance, the Angier inside the machine shoots the one outside of it. Hence, for the 2nd instance in which he uses the machine (the demonstration to the promoter), his POV is that he'll be the one who's about to drown. But then, of course, the prestige experiences surviving the trick. Due to the memories of surviving inside the machine the first time and then outside of the machine for the rest of the times, he says to Borden that he doesn't actually know whether the person who enters the machine ends up living or dying.
    2) At the end, Borden says that he loved Sarah and that his brother loved Olivia. Hence, most likely, the father is the one who retrieves Jess. The father (Alfred) isn't sinless, but on the re-watch, you'll notice that the uncle (Freddie) is the twin who caused the more trouble.

    • @PaulSchober
      @PaulSchober ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's the part I have a problem with. Angier tells Borden at the end that he didn't know if he'd be the tank or the prestige each night, but based on that first test - where the "tank" Angier shoots the "prestige" Angier - "he" should have fully expected to be in the TANK every night, and the guy on the balcony would live on.
      I don't think he would do that.
      Maybe if "transported position" Angier had managed to shoot "machine position" Angier at that first test, THEN it would make sense to design that act, if he could have the "machine" guy die each time.

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@PaulSchober Angier had to obey the rules of the machine. Which allowed him to retort to Borden about making sacrifices of his own. The 2nd time he uses the machine is where that especially applies since he was under the impression that he'd be the one to "go home" like Julia. After the trick, the prestige Angier (whether it's still the man who walked into the machine or not) gained the memory of being transported. Hence, it made his fate uncertain to him every time he repeated the trick.

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Alternatively, it's also possible that the Angier who shot the revolver already acknowledges that he may not even be the man who walked into the machine, especially if he felt some kind of effect.

    • @PaulSchober
      @PaulSchober ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jp3813
      I'm pretty sure Angier placed the revolver right next to his "starting point" (in the machine) for his first test. He didn't walk over to the "target" position and place it there.
      So it was "machine" Angier that killed the "balcony" Angier that first time. To him, "he" persisted at the starting point.
      I just find it hard to believe he would then choose to drown himself each night. Based on that first test, he knew that "he" would remain in the machine, whatever else showed up on the balcony (to receive the applause) .

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PaulSchober Like I said, "especially if he felt some kind of effect". Planning is one thing, executing is another. The 2nd use is the most critical one ("it takes everything"). Afterwards, it gets a bit easier since he recalls surviving the trick each night. Plus, he also has an obsession w/ the way his wife died.

    If you ever watch this movie again, you‘ll see that there's actually a pretty clear distinction between Al and Fred, with Al being the more mild and thoughtful brother, as well as the one who truly loves his wife and daughter, while his twin Fred is more brash and confrontational, the one who tied the bad knot, the one who falls for Black Widow, and the one whose obsession with winning ultimately ends with him getting caught in Danton's trap. It's actually easy to tell, not just because Christian Bale gives an awesome dual performance, but because every other scene set in the past featuring Borden is Al, so then the next scene featuring Borden is Fred, then Al, then Fred. This means that the Borden who is executed at the end is in fact Fred, the man responsible for the death of Danton's wife and for his wife's suicide, and the Borden who kills Danton and escapes with his daughter is Al. So in a way it’s actually a pretty happy ending, in that the two vengeful, obsessed lunatics, Danton and Fred, end up dead, leaving Al to go live a normal life with his daughter.

    Lovely to see your reaction! I believe he says something along the lines of "it took courage to step in the machine, not knowing if I'd be the one in the tank or the one in the prestige", which I think implies it was never certain each time where he would end up. So, sometimes he lives, sometimes the clone lives. :)

    • @kyleshockley1573
      @kyleshockley1573 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's part of the paradox I think. From the clone's perspective, he _is_ the original Angier. He'd have all of his memories, personality, etc, so to him, he simply teleported and the other one is the clone. There's no way either of them would ever know the difference, if there even was a difference. Tesla hints at this earlier that the duplicate hats "are all yours," they're all equally the same entity. Craziness.

  • @leoda_lion4107
    @leoda_lion4107 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    We all speculate how Angier did it, whether he was the man in the tank or not. But here's the part we all seem to overlook. He performed the trick without the tank FIRST. So he had his double still alive for some time. But after that, you have people ending up dead in the tank. Outside of that, I don't want to speculate, because my head hurts with all the random possibilities. Borden's twin was the one that caused the most trouble. He told Olivia, I don't love her at all...I love you. Which was true. He tied the Langford knot. Hence, Alfred didn't know what knot was tied. I also believe he was the one arguing with Sarah before she died, when he told her, that he didn't love her. He also would not share secrets with her, like Alfred would. Alfred dressed as Fallon tries to protect his daughter. The clues are in plain sight, but some are more hidden than others.

Interstellar is a terribly written movie that hews to all of the worst soft sci-fi tropes despite having dressed itself in hard sci-fi clothing. Dreams in Inception are completely lacking in imagination (pulling out a grenade launcher is not "dreaming big") and Tenet was a complete and boring mess.

      Exactly, thats why i think angier committed far greater crimes, he essentially murdered clones of himself countless times, and even with angiers wife (which angier would say was bordens greatest sin) it wasnt even intentional he believed she would escape the knot and even she gave him the nod of approval before he tied it

    This rivalry between the two is inspired by the rivalry of Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison! Tesla was an amazing man and people say he really invented that technology and technology that would have homes generating their own power but because it didn't make rich people more money so they stopped funding him. I'm sure that documentary you watched was really interested; fascinating guy.
    Four recommendations linking to this movie:
    - 'The Illusionist' (2006) - came out the same year and had similar themes
    - 'Tesla' (2020) - Really underrated unique movie staring Ethan Hawke as Tesla and about him and Edison
    - 'Inception' (2010) - You've reacted to a lot of Nolan but haven't reacted to this, definitely worth watching. Not sure if you've seen it or not it was super popular!
    - 'Prisoners' (2013) - Great mystery/thriller starring Hugh Jackman and Jack Gyllenhaal (from Zodiac)

    Little trivia bit for you: in the beginning, when the two of them are working for the tired hack of a magician with Angier's wife, that magician is played by the late, great Ricky Jay. A truly wonderful, innovative and highly-respected magician. Videos of him performing his card tricks are available all over TH-cam, and he's wonderful.
    As for the movie, like Memento it's one that leaves you feeling hollow and miserable at the end. Nolan likes to show the futility of revenge, and he's really good at it.

    Angier always thought he was the originial, as the cloning happens before the drowning. Meaning once a clone is being made, the originial always dies, but the clone thinks he is the originial because in his memory, just 1 second ago he was inside the machine and then just kinda teleported into somewhere else. So that's why Angier kept killing himself over and over. Because the clone's minds has continuity. 1 second Angier is inside the machine, next he is teleported. That's why he says "it took courage to climb into that machine every night, not knowing if I'll be the man in the box or in the prestige". To him, as long as the continuity from the machine to the prestige exists, he is not killing himself. In his mind, he did the same thing for days and days and he is still alive and well. But he is actually killing himself...

      it's a "bisaya" thing to say.. in bisaya "man" does not mean the same as in English. Sorry, we confuse you with our dialect somtimes.

      @@MJoy4Fun I'm talking about the Romanian man. He's the one who is always saying it. Besides, your "PAYING" Audience are "English-Speaking" Americans.

    Another trick the movie played on the viewer is portraying Angier originally as the vicitm and the one to symphatise for. But in the end Borden did nothing wrong until he got his finger shot off. Borden would've never tied the other knot without the agreement of Angiers wife. Was it brash and a bit reckless by both of them? Quite possibly. But they BOTH agreed on doing it knowing the risks.

      Since it's always the original that moves when using the machine, it's the clone that kills the original at 35:28.

      I think its the opposite. 1st time the clone kills the orriginal and after that the clone is always killed.

      Everyone who used the word "clone" already failed to understand this movie. Like Angier asking Tesla which hat is his.

      @@shiranuiaensland1442 and everyone that believes the machine is real has failed to understand Nolan 😂.
