I'm super excited to get hands on with all new models from the Seiko Prospex 1965 Heritage Diver’s Watch collection. The SPB451, SPB453 & SPB455 divewatch. With all the new updates, did the SPB143 just get better ? Is this still the best looking diver on the market and the best affordable alternative to the Rolex submariner in terms of looks ? What about that new date position on the dial?
In this video we are taking a closer look at all dial colours & we are doing some side by side comparison shots with my Seiko SPB143.
Hope you like this video, if you do, don't forget to like & subscribe. Thanks for watching.

That blue one....would be awesome next to my SPB143
I'm thinking the same
same me
was on the way to buy a SPB save the Ocean. Now waiting for the blue
Beautiful watch. I like the improvements here. The only thing I don't care for is the movement. Seiko has an amazing 6L and 8L movements. I have owned an 8L, the monoblock marine master, and it was a gem, one of my favorite watches I took everywhere with me and kept excellent time. Previously, I had a 6R15 and was much less impressed with the performance there--back then that was for 800 dollars, the so-called Pepsi bezel on the mm200 back in 2018. I'm reluctant to try a 6R again, this time at 1300.
The blue one is absolutely the pick of the bunch!
summer watch !
Fantastic video as always, Tom! I can't wait to have the chance of trying these new models!
Thx M. 🙏
Great video Tom. Bracelet seems like a dealbreaker. Why Seiko continues to make great watches with average bracelets makes me scratch my head. Also the accuracy isn’t great either even though the movement has been upgraded. I feel like a nice Seventy30 B&J NATO would look great.
That blue one! 💙
Cool to see a hands-on, since the announcement. I prefer the symmetry of a no date, but I realize that I check my watch daily for the day of the month. Best of both worlds. If I got a exclusively no-date, I feel like I'd eventually regret if given the option.
Everytime I don’t wear a date watch I’ll try and check it 🤪
I'm getting that blue one for sure
I agree with you! The blue one is my favorite. Can’t wait to see them in person.
I think that matching the date wheel color to the dial plays a big part in making the date placement work.
I don’t really mind the date at 4:30 in these new releases but if the date wheels were all white it would bug me for sure haha
Is it just me or are they all simply black/white date wheels… and therefore only matching the black dial version?
The "automatic 3 days" text ruins the dial in my opinion
Could be worse written in seconds
Thanks so much for the new products video and detailed information.🎉❤
Glad you like them!
great.. another watch I’m gonna have to buy this summer .
😅
this would be my 3rd seiko once it comes out that blue one for sure!
Great video Tom! You know, normally I’m not a fan of a 4:30 date window but this one seems really well executed! Nice one Seiko! 👍🏻
Thx Ryan. I think I’m a neutral supporter in this one too ;)
Thx Ryan. I think I’m a neutral supporter in this one too ;)
Seiko is doing great with their new date positioning. I recently picked up a spb 313 and it's quickly becoming my favourite watch.
Congrats on the NWA
I'll be keeping my JDM 143, but look forward to watching these evolve.
those are beautiful with great dimensions
Edit: I also love the date location and color match
Glad you like them! I think they are nice subtle iteration too
Hi Tom, Thankyou for making a great video, especially for us Seiko fans 😃 Overall, it’s a great upgrade for these line up.. I feel the same with you, hope the production model has a better bezel action (smoother finish). I think these series isnt going to dethrone the spb143 as it’s already become a future classic 😊
Thx for watching. Glad you enjoyed it and I hope it was useful
My 143 has dominated my collection. I love that watch. I also have the 455 preordered. Thanks for the video. Im super hyped to get that watch on my wrist come June.
Awesome. Congrats ! I might pick one up. We will see
@@BowlOfSalmon was lucky enough to have an AD discount it for me to around $1150 since I was on the fence. I realized after going through an AD, that the retail
price really is just a suggestion. . . .
I do own a SPB143, totally agree it's a great watch I just spent the last two weeks with it on my wrist as my one and only while roadtriping, it's my holiday or under the radar watch. I bought it for times I don't want to wear a luxury item, but guess what sometimes I do pick it up because I do enjoy wearing it not because I have to. My only advice is to wear it on a rubber cause Seiko Natos are good looking but too thick and to me the bracelet is not very confortable. The new dimensions seem to be a good improvement and I do like the new position for the date.
Love mine too. I love all kinds of straps on it
I wish I had somewhere to try on some of these. I am looking for a good daily watch and considering various things from 1k to 5k. This seems a bit on the smaller side. I don't have a big wrist but eyesight is not great at this point and I guess I just always had big watches (worn a lot my Mako XL before I dropped it accidentally).
It does look great and I wonder if I need anything more or not. I will try to keep an eye out and try it on if I see it somewhere.
they will be available at Ad in june
Really nice seeing the comparison with the SPB143 on film, nice refinements that do make a difference. I sold my SPB a while back but these could tempt me back in. How is the end link fit? It was diabolical how much play it had on mine...
Cheers 🙂👍
better but still ... same same
Beautiful, as always I’m little bit late in the party and my favourite one is the blue one.
Not sure how the saying translates in English where the best folks always arrive a little late 😉
Loving these new releases and I can't wait to add one to my collection. I'm conflicted between the black and grey/gilt dial variants. I think the blue is great too, but I already have blue in my collection. How flashy would you say the sunburst and gilt is in the metal? Thank you for the great and informative video.
Welcome. Dark marine blue. Very blue in some light. Almost black in other. but not blue blue like the fxd mn
@@BowlOfSalmon Hey man, appreciate the reply
I just know they’ll definitely bring back the grey sunray dial and black bezel version sometime in the future, seeing how popular and iconic the SPB143 is . Love all the refinements in case dimensions and as a sucker for symmetry the colour matched date wheel at 4:30 is perfect!
Sounds logical the spb143 will one day get the upgraded package I guess
@@BowlOfSalmon Can you confirm the date wheel color matches dial on all three colorways?
@@dustin3886 yip they match , note on the SE it is not a 100% match due to the sunburst
@@BowlOfSalmon so the blue dial watch has a blue date wheel and the SE has a grey date wheel with yellow/cream numerals? Maybe it’s my eyes but they all simply look like white text on black bg in the photos and videos I’ve seen.
I think this is an overall improvement but I still prefer the sunray grey dial and brushed bezel of the 143 than the black dial and matte black bezel with the circular 4:30 date that looks to be taken out of the willard. I also don’t like the “3 days”. I think the black would’ve been a nice secondary option to a sunray grey/brushed bezel. Plus my 143 is a companion to my sje093.
I can only applaud More options. Given the choice between mine or this. I would hesitate. I think the Sunray dial and brushed bezel wins it in terms of looks for me personally
@@BowlOfSalmon exactly. i wouldn’t trade mine for this but if I was in the market and the 143 wasn’t available this is a good choice.
I agree with you. 143's dial is so gorgeous
I seriously didn’t even notice the date window until you mentioned it. However, the “3 days” text is superfluous and quite daft
I agree, the 3 Days is the bit that's bothering me!
sorry . hehe
well thats the next upgrade buddy, we cant have it all in one shot and thats what yuo called marketing strategy. peace!
Yep, it just ruins the clean outstanding design, turning it into a flik flak watch
I got the last sharp-edge Presage at my local dealer a few weeks ago and that is the one that finally hooked me on Seiko... My wallet shall suffer once he gets these in.
Haha. God speed
Great collection of watches
All good things come in trio ‘s
I love them all, but if have to only choose one, itll be the blue. Nice vid, as always 👌
thanks mate. appreciate it. blue for me too ;)
Thanks for the review! The diashield coating makes my SPB143 look almost grey like titanium. Is it the same with these 3 models? From the comparison in your video it looks that way.
idk if anything changed technically , i don't think it it did, so they are identical looking indeed. thanks for watching
The new case design and dimensions are beautiful. Also, people seem to be very divided on the date placement. While I hate(!) 4:30 date windows the circular window, colour matched date wheel, and vertically oriented numerals are very attractive. Very Bell & Ross, who does the best date complocations in the industry in my opinion.
Agreed on the b&r remark. I’m
Not a reference on date placement anymore these days. Owning the tag glassbox 🫣
@@BowlOfSalmon the Glassbox date is terrible! Beautiful watch though
Have they chamfered and applied mirror polishing to the edge of the bezel? It looks different to the 143. The bezel seems so have a much more defined and shiny outline. Looks great.
case lines have been refined a little indeed
Hey great video! My most worn watch is my spb143, but my only complaint is the bracelet.
Did you say that the new bracelets are not compatible with the spb143?
That is correct. I tried matching the new to my spb. The fit at the case is different
@@BowlOfSalmon I might have to try out the uncle seiko bracelets then!
Definitely loving the blue dial version the best . Looking forward till June so I can visit my local AD to check them out.
It will be hard to resist
Imagen, in 16 years we will get a 38mm 62MAS, I'm excited
Ill be there on release date
Great review! Yes we want the female endlinks.
thanks !
How is the fitment of the end links? That was a complaint I had with the 143; bracelet was okay, but for a $1k watch the end links should at least fit properly into the case!
Slightly better. Different design how they fit in to the case. Less wiggle. But still showing some gap imho
Any idea if the reflections are less on the new models? Also do you reckon pre-existing bracelets that fit the SPB143 would fit the new ones?
coating/Reflection felt similar. didnt try the old bracelet on the new model .. new bracelet on the old didn't work ...
The blue one looks good, but I still think my 143 oldest version, without the lume plot at 3 o clock is the best one ☺️
I really enjoy your videos btw ✌🏼
appreciate you dropping in for a friendly note too ;)
Very nice leather watch case at the start of the video. Where did you get it please?
That is from tawbury. Links in description
that blue one is a nice competitor to blue BB58, but im not sure if making the clasp smaller by removing adjustable holes is the right choice
Lifehacks right 😉
I love the design of this watch. It’s a classic. The one thing that I don’t understand is why a 1400 Euro watch still uses a movement that operates at 21,600 beats. There are so many other brands that offer a movement operating at 28,800 beats for a far lower price. I understand that you can increase the power reserve by decreasing the beats per hour but it just doesn’t feel right. Sometimes I feel that these “prospex” watches aren’t really that pro. Other micro brands offer similar value at almost half the cost.
I think it is a brilliant watch but I do agree with most of what you say.. especially with the weight of the Seiko brand know how ...
Im ok with the date. New iso standard - new design. Its looking good, very simple.
🤛
I wasn’t a fan the time I tried on the original, probably due to the grey hues. I think this version looks great on video and I’ve loved the porthole date since I saw it on the bell&ross. I will no longer consider a watch without a date but the issue I may have with this is my ability to read it with my aging eyes.
We can always ask Siri for the date right !? 😉
Does the special edition have the blue lume?
I stupidly didnt check. Sorry
Once it comes out in June, I could only imagine the struggle between the choices of spb453 and the Tudor Monochrome. And I can’t believe I’m watching a channel called Bowl of Salmon.
It’s a tough fight between me and the poke bowls
Much prefer the old one!! Don’t like all that text on the dial or the new date placement. Also I love the dimensions of the old SPB143 chunky is better on my wrist!!
40-41 is a sweet spot for me too
I really like the monochrome Black dial version, but that new shorter clasp with only 2 micro adjustments is a deal breaker, to getting a good fit. I’ll stick with my SPB149.
Ah. These watches shine on so
Many straps. An on the fly adjust would have been nice …
@@BowlOfSalmon I agree, at this pricing point having a push button adjustable clasp is a must. Seiko clasp on these new SPB’s needs an update.
Last but not least, it's seems like bezels are not misaligned. So good job Seiko!
these were all aligned properly (i just forgot to properly set some on the opening shot ...#noob error)
@@BowlOfSalmon it was a great video, thank you so much!
I'm definitely on the blue dial train!! It's a shame that Seiko still used old pin and collar bracelets w/old clasps (no onthefly macro adj) on these $1500 divers. Several micro brands put Seiko to shame in that area. Still, I do like these and may have to pick up that blue dial just to see how I like it.
I wonder why we dislike pin and collar that much tho. We only need to do the size bracelet thing once no ? And usually the ad would do it
@@BowlOfSalmon maybe it's just older tech. I've had issues w/old Omega pin/collar bracelets when resizing, even using proper tools. It's just easier w/screws. You're not totally wrong though. My biggest 'issue' is the old lack of an on-the-fly macro adjust clasp given the huge price increase in Seiko's over the past 3-5 years.
what watch case is this? it looks great!
🙄
is the lume still green? I see Seiko opted for a blue tone in the new SNXS models.
the LE had green .. the blue had blue if i'm not mistaken ... not sure about the black ... I tested it but forgot to make video ...
I would get this. But the price hikes keep going. And they still don’t offer a nice on the fly adjustment clasp. At least when they hold prices they should also make better watches with tighter accuracy tolerances (as else it’s still just a 6R as found in watches a fourth of the price years back) and better clasps on their bracelets in my opinion.
I agree some things can be done to step up the game ...
This model would suggest or reconfirm the
discontinuation of marine master300m
i have no intel on that
Show the watch running I can't see the sweep of the hands , the quickset, crown action ? 🤔
I did state the watches didn’t have live movements.
Getting a black one and praying someone makes a Jubilee for it. Black Bay Monochrome looks on a budget.
rooting for uncleseiko & forstner ;)
How is the accuracy on these?
As advertised I would hope. Dummy mvmtIn the review. Can’t say
I’d this the first hands on with these watches??
Cool right
Nice watches but im waiting for a solar quartz version.
not enough sun in belgium for that ;)
I would just keep saving for a little longer and get a Tudor
I did too. But I couldn’t let go of the spb
Blue or black for me.
what is the music at the beginning?
Something licensed from Epidemic sound. Sure Shazam can tell
The first Seiko I like. But a little pricey though. What about the accuracy of this model in daily use?
My spb performed around +- 15
The date window seems a bit delicate and at odds with the rest of the watch. No date would have been better in my opinion.
I’d love to see that one too
Great new models. Seiko just needs to upgrade their bracelets. Lose the divers extension and use a Glyde lock microadjust. Also get rid of the pins and collars and go to screws.
Upgrades are due indeed
No not until they have a no date version will this be comparable to the spb143 first gen. Close but no cigar.
that round hole 4:30 date is the cheapest looking solution to a date problem they could have ever thought of, ffs Seiko. I’m glad I have a spb239 and I’m holding onto it for dear life as long as I don’t find a cheap sla043.
Seeing more brands approach it like this lately. It hides well enough in plain sight
Where's the Lume part?
Had to rush the video. Only had the Watches for a couple of hours. I did test it and it’s as you expect from
These. Super good
Spb143 has brushed STEEL inserts btw
True. Treated so they are harder. What did I say btw …
@@BowlOfSalmon all good. I think i heard you saying the new has aluminum inserts. If so, I will miss the steel inserts of the 143 and its variants. Steel is simply the best insert material to me, and least used
Sorry, but what is the movement powering it?
I did get that right in the video ;) 6R55
@@BowlOfSalmon great, thanks, i was too lazy to get to it thru the video, im sure u got it. Ah yes, the 55, i forgot about it. Oh well, still the 35 type with a couple hours more, no big difference in movement. Thanks!
@@BowlOfSalmon thanks for the early video of it. Frankly, it looks good. I hadnt expected it. This should be the final version for years to come.
Blue one easily looks the best, but I’m wondering if the accuracy will be as dreadfully poor as my SPB 143……
even with my spb not being the most accurate of the bunch .. I still love it
Hmmmm. It seems that ... there might be a ...uhm .. slight resemblance to a certain swiss watch... or am I totally wrong?
Possibly. Happens with divers
I don’t understand the “3 Days” text on the dial. And the date bugs me a little. Otherwise SEIKO TAKE MY MONEY. 😜
the text lines look to be bothering more ppl.. i honestly don't know what is written on most of my dials
Like the blue, shame the movement has a slow beat rate
Don’t be fooled by my footage tho. It was a dummy mvmt 😜
@@BowlOfSalmon yeah but it's still a low beat rate in the real thing, that's the issue with the cheaper Seiko's
Still missing the signed crown
Rolex are still missing the signed caseback but everyone thinks that ok for the price.
Point 👌
Would be a nice detail
For me, they’re perfect except for the aluminum bezel inserts, which is a 100% total deal breaker.
I bet they are coated somehow too tho.... was the 173 ceramic ? i don't have a scratch on it
beautiful watches but why don't they sign the damn crown !!
Would be a nice detail
Still no on the fly clasp adjustment !!! 1400 Bucks come on Seiko !!!!!!
Mine would live on tropic rubber straps or natos ;)
One micro extension lol
Im so starting to wonder if I missed finding the on the fly or something 😂
@@BowlOfSalmon haha seiko giveth and seiko taketh awayt my friend.
without date will be a killer to bb58
different leagues ofcourse , but great to see options in every pricepoint
Why couldn't they make another one with the grey dial like the 143? I hate that cream/gold accents.
It will come. The 143 isn’t discontinued atm. Upgrades sound logical
For me Seiko does not go with four digit price tag.
In that case most unknown brands wouldn’t either. But with the Seiko name they should punch above those with prospex
Why not just leave the date window at 3 o clock, or ditch the silly "Automatic 3 Days" text, move the "Diver's 300m" up, and put a proper date window at 6 o clock for symmetry?
Anyway, not a dealbreaker, in my opinion, might get one at some point.
I agree with the Why not tho
Your intro music is way louder than your voice. I had to lower the volume way down for the intro and then crank it up for the video.
I’ll try to balance it better next time. But the idea was for a bit of swung on the intro …
Aluminium bezel? Chinese watches have mat ceramic bezels, and they sell for less than 200 USD with an NH35 inside. Seikos are too expensive.
Treated aluminium bezel. Prospex is a higher end seiko pricerange for sure
Unfortunately, the movement will be the same crap as the 143. Only with a longer mainspring for more power reserve. I like the black one though.
Get the San Martin version instead
I definetly wouldn’t

Nope. All blue😅
@@BowlOfSalmon first time i see the 3, few weeks ago---the blue is my

I like the look of both generations, but their movements keep me from buying one. I have heard too many horrible experiences from 6R so I don't bother to try my luck with hard earned money.
Sorry to hear that. You are not the first to say this today so I’m not sure what is going or what the response or seiko is on the matter
@@BowlOfSalmon Unfortunately I don't think Seiko is going to upgrade the movement soon. I do own a mechanical GS(SBGW289) and luckily it runs pretty well. But honestly I am only confident with Spring drive and quartz.
Honestly if you get lucky these are amazing my spb143 is running within Cosc and has perfect alignment however I’ve seen many that have egregious accuracy , it’s all a luck of the draw lol
@@knucklesboxing786 You must be a lucky guy 🤣🤣
I hate the location of the date window. Also, the date is way too small. The gray dial of the 143 is prettier. I can't believe the new clasp. What a let down !
I like the world better without hate, things like date windows are a personal preferences and it’s okay not to like something tho. My personal preference is
Still they gray dial spb too.
@@BowlOfSalmon We don't live in a world of unicorns. Better take off your rose-colored glasses because social media is unfortunately filled with hate.
These look terrible. They ruined the pyramid with the 3 lines of text on the previous model. The first version without the lume plot at 3 was the best, this one looks even worse than the revision to meet ISO standards. Seiko has a great design language with the 62mas, 6159, 6105, and 6309 which all had date or day/date windows at 3 o'clock. These watches are just weird looking with that date placement and look un-Seiko like. Good review and video though.
thx for the feedback
Seiko is king, but every watch they release either has a 4:30 date or a lume placement to the right of the 3 oclock date, which no other indice has. I cant own any watch from any brand that has either of these things, throws off the dial, is super awkward, and is an eye sore everytime i look at the watch. Therefore the 1st gen spb is the only one for me. Just take off the date seiko!
Rules for ISO dive standards changed and now require lume on all indices which is why Seiko have changed it. Seeing as Seiko aren't going to lose the date function you can either deal with a 4.30 date/additional lume plot or lose the ISO rating. The date has never bothered me, nor has the ISO rating but I know what most spec-lovers would prefer to have.
I wouldn’t mind a no date. And I’m sure it would be a popular option
Yip. Standards indeed 🤛
@tomw4962 id rather not have the ISO
So lets see - Prospex but no 8L35 movement? FAIL. 60 click bezel instead of 120? NOPE. Steel instead of ceramic bezel insert? HELL NO. And that date window is an abomination - place it at 3, 5 or 6 (Seiko has done all three in the past) or dont place it there at all! (All these comments are based as an owner of the 140th Edition MarineMaster which gets all of the above right, but could do with a little less bulk at 220g)
Next one then
That bracelet just doesnt seem to fit the watch.
I wear mine on nato 99% of the time tbh
@BowlOfSalmon yeah I get you. It's a shame the bracelet doesn't match the watch as for me I'd want it all steel.
Did they fix the shitty movement?
couldn't time results on this one . sorry ... 6R55 ...
"3 DAYS" sucks
Unless it’s a long weekend

Garbage movement. Terrible bracelet and clasp. Diashield ruins the natural shiny appearance of 316L. Porthole date in the most detested location. Awful power reserve text on the dial. No. Just no 👎🗑️
You are very outspoken pro
Or con. Curious. What would you go for if you want this look in this price point ?
@@BowlOfSalmon Doxa 39, or Certina DS action diver 38. I’d either drill more micros in the Certina clasp, or swap it. When the movement fails, replace the powermatic 80 with a fully serviceable top grade ETA 2824 or SW200. Personally, I don’t think there’s a lot of great divers in this price range. I’ve been in this hobby too long, so I tend to nitpick on things noobs overlook.
