      What about if I'm going for the standing box jump WR? Do you still not like going for max height if its to test the full potential of what an athlete can do?

    • @SimpleSpeedCoach
      @SimpleSpeedCoach  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@arbadart1012 If your training specifically for that, great. My athletes are training for the court and field - we can test max jump other (better) ways, like utilizing the Vertec vertical testing system. A max box jump is not a vertical, but a combination of how high you can lift your knees (mobility) and jump at the same time.

      @@SimpleSpeedCoach I mean I hope universally people know a box jump isn't a measure of a person's true vertical. It is however a super fun and flashy way to make it look like you can jump high. I completely agree that it's dangerous to jump to those heights and an athlete going for other goals shouldn't be doing them super high. Seen too many dumb people with sketchy ways of making stuff higher lol

    • @SimpleSpeedCoach
      @SimpleSpeedCoach  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@arbadart1012 I wish that was the truth! It can be fun. I have to weigh the good with the bad. Often athletes try to high, or land wrong, etc. and my #1 job is to do no harm and then improve performance. High box jumps come with too much liability risk IMO and I also want to teach good habits of landing the same way you take off.

    What I notice about lower box jumps, is I don't use as much power as I do with higher box jumps. To use maximum explosiveness, what plyo trains, I have to have the box as high as I can confidently jump on.

    • @SimpleSpeedCoach
      @SimpleSpeedCoach  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wont disagree with you, but a higher box jump to me is still something I can land the same way I took off. A box Jump is not a knee lift or hip flexion, you should be able to stay in an athletic position through the landing. I always coach my athletes to jump higher than the box and anticipate the landing.

    • @GregRosolowski
      @GregRosolowski 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SimpleSpeedCoach i see. What's the purpose of landing the same way you take off? I feel very comfortable landing with my knees at 90°. Though I jump in a similar stance as you. I was doing lower box jumps, but there is something different when I have a little bit of a rush knowing I have no choice but to make the jump and there's no room to get a little lazy.

    • @SimpleSpeedCoach
      @SimpleSpeedCoach  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@GregRosolowski The only reason for doing a box jump is to eliminate the compression, impact and force of landing normal (not on a box). Sure it gives you a goal, but from a training perspective it allows you do a maximal effort jump (hip extension and power movement) without the impact of a normal landing - allowing you to program more jumps.
      Athletes need to be prepared for the next movement (after the jump), landing in an athletic position. The way you are talking about landing is nonathletic, flat footed and not prepared to move again. Also, landing athletic can teach athletes to build the neuro-pathways to absorb force, which will also help with creating force!

    • @GregRosolowski
      @GregRosolowski 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SimpleSpeedCoach thanks for the tip! that actually makes a lot of sense for most sports. However, my sport is skateboarding. It is important to train how high you can bring your legs up for many things, but landing in an athletic stance makes sense too for so I will be training lower box jumps too now. Is there another way to train bringing your legs up higher with a jump? Like you mentioned , jumping hurdles is too much impact to train regularly. Perhaps a hurdle before a box? Also, how long should a plyo session be if I'm weight training right after? I typically do 30 min plyo before 30 min of weights for legs.

    • @SimpleSpeedCoach
      @SimpleSpeedCoach  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GregRosolowski That makes sense for a skateboarding - as you land with impact a lot. Hurdles are a good option, just simple tuck jumps would work, hurdles before a box are also a good idea! True plyos really don't need to be done for more than 5 min. - but plyo type exercises with the correct breaks and reps could be done for up to 20 min. I soppose. Best of Luck!

    is 20 inch box jump enough to practice for increasing vertical jump? and how much maximum dumbell weight or load can a person use for jumps

    • @SimpleSpeedCoach
      @SimpleSpeedCoach  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment. Really depends on the exercise, but 20 inch should be fine. The link below can give you some more ideas on how to train to increase vertical. Overload also depends on your skill level, strength and body. However, typically you can start with 10-20 lbs. and progress from there.

      And also just scout out spots for random ledges/fences/railings and measure them with a tape measure to know the height, plus if it’s a fence or railing, you have to practice railing precisions to make sure that you don’t miss and fall. Also, if you’re doing any sort of box jumps, you should always have the reflexes to bounce back and land on your feet instead of falling back, plus there’s also catching yourself with your hands, craning it (one foot lands on it and the other leg is straight and touching the side of the structure), or a combination of these things. As for shinjuries, you just have to accept that fact that it might be possible to get a scrape/sore/bruise on your shin and that you’ll only be able to get a minor shinjury from box jumps, plus practicing will just improve your reflexes and prevent shinjuries anyways. Also, don’t wear shin guards because then you could get scared of not wearing shin guards, plus your reflexes won’t be as good and you’ll get more shinners, but you’ll just get away with it while wearing shin guards.

Also at (0:16), I do fully extend the hips, it just may be to fast for you to see. The intent of this video was to help people apply the purpose of the box jump correctly to their training. @@user-ky9qn4pg3w It comes from working with 4,000 plus high school, collegiate and professional athletes over the last 20 years. Understand what I'm saying - to do it correctly you must takeoff and land in the same position. Your friends may be able to land on the box by lifting their legs and knees up, but that's exactly what I'm not allowing with the athletes I train. People just like to embellish what they can actually do! If you and your friends can do it correctly, I'm impressed, good for you! - still less than 1 percent of the population.

Also, yes in my prime I could do it (99% of people could not) - but there is no transfer to sport trying to jump and land on a 56" box - becomes more of a hip flexion movement than a jump at that point. Little more complex than that, but you are correct. The 'How To' of the drill and why the '60' inch JJ Watt box jumps are proving nothing nor doing anything for him athletically - other than how high he can lift his knees. What is the actually purpose of the drill, how to get everything you can out of the drill - while being safe. So, pick the correct box height, land the same way you takeoff, land soft and controlled on the balls of the feet - engaging your neurological system, how to use your arms, how to takeoff, correct body and limb positions, anticipation, balance, power and yes - how to be safe and smart... :)
