- The standing vertical jump is an important measure of an athlete's explosive power and a critical test in the NFL Combine. So who jumps the highest? And what's the limit? WIRED's Robbie Gonzalez jumps in to examine the physics and physicality of maximum leaping ability.

As unfair as it sounds it’s factual some ppl just have better or more fat twitch muscles than others
applies to basically everything in existence
Skill issue sadly
It's very different than running which is endurance so your body needs to have muscles that are designed to be better at specific applications. It's why someone with a grip strength of 200lbs isn't as fast at clicking a key as someone who plays videogames professionally. It's radically different applications where people's bodies have radically different adaptations.

50" vertical is alot harder then 63" box jump due to the angles, both seriously impressive though.

Notice how much deeper the jumper is in his squat before he ascends Vs the non jumper. This also helps because it takes him past the “sticking point” or 90 degrees, which in turn activates his patella reflex, which assists in knee extension.
If I did that my patella would say “bye”snaps* 😂

He explodes fast, too. If you noticed both of them leave the ground at the same time, but Unger travels a greater distance relative to his initial center of gravity. Greater distance, greater acceleration, greater force, greater jump.

-Oh, what do you do for a living?
I’m a box jumper.
-Cool... what’s a box jumper?
I.... jump on boxes.
-Oh... that’s nifty.
People want to be one trick ponies for some reason. They aren't even real box jumps either. You're supposed to start on top of the box, jump back off the box, strike the ground and rebound back onto the box where you started. With a smaller box you can do high repetitions of this nonstop and properly develop the achilles tendon so that it can absorb more impact upon landing, making for much faster and safer 'realistic' running and jumping movements. This guy will likely have shot knees in his future because of not doing this kind of training and all the super deep knee bends required to do what he does.
So how much do you Make? Nothing, i get paid in boxes.
"But then one day I tripped and fell and I had to go on workman's Comp"
This is indeed far too dangerous to be a thing that people in general to be doing, let alone honing in on and being the complete focus of their training. His jump is quite impressive, but there is hardly any other competition out there for this kind of thing. A regular no step or max vert is much more realistic for showing athletic ability.
My cat's job.
At the 5:40 mark; It’s actually about the speed in which you go down aswell. In order to jump Higher your over all amplitude must be as explosive as possible. Meaning when you start at 0 Position and go down to -10 then push yourself up to +20. The faster you can do this the Higher you jump.

Same and I can’t even jump half a foot lol
11:38 you know you're jumping high when you have to take the steps down
i’ve been watching people say muscles cause you to jump high. it’s actually your tendons and ligaments… look at michael jordan’s patellar tendon it’s huge. every high jumper has an exceptionally large patellar tendon compared to other people. tendons act as rubber band and the thicker the rubber band the stronger the elastic energy AKA the jump. muscles just let us move but it doesn’t give us the athletic elastic energy.
@Deliver4Kyle run/jump on dirt/sand
@Deliver4Kyle It is genetic. You can increase the size and strength of your muscles but your tendon length cannot be changed.
50 inches is 127 centimetres for the rest of the world.

And now we have 3 dudes in the world who have tested over a 50in vertical
It's interesting/impressive that Evan is going into a full squat position to perform these verticals. Most of the highest verticals on video that i have seen the athletes only go to about 1/3-1/4 squat.
That’s because athletes train box jumps to improve their athletic performance. No athletic endeavour I can think of requires you to leap and land in a full squat, hence you don’t see athletes doing it. These box jump records are impressive, but they are more reliant on achieving high degrees of hip flexion at the peak height than increasing jumo performance as relative to sports.
NBA record- 48”
NFL record- 46”
I’m no genius, but I’m pretty sure 48” is higher than 46”.
NBA records their vertical jump using a running start, whereas the NFL uses a standing vert. You jump higher with a running start so I’d think it’s safe to assume that the NFL guys jump higher if their verts are comparable.

I think there's some term for what's good for the method. Stretch reflex I think. Which is often used in lifting weights. I believe that's the benefit of dipping down all the way before the jump.

2. jump and see how hight it gets

Papa connoisseur, bless us with a video.
Junk food is called junk food for a reason
Agreed. Also, holding a record isn't taking into consideration the body PROPORTIONS of the person performing the jump. In that regard, Spud Webb is, probably, the highest jumper in basketball. And Stefan Holm is for sure, the highest high jumper proportionally.
Why does no one comment on the fact that Gonzalez does not drop to depth before jumping? And also that Gonzales creates a counterbalance behind his knees by throwing his arms back, which means that the direction of his jump is going to send him backwards instead of vertical?
dude right? are we crazy here for noticing this lollll
Josh Imatorbhebhe did 47.1 standing vertical for the NFL combine...surely there's a human being that can get over 50....even the same dude on a better day. Also Jamal Harris has done a very legit 52" jumping off 2-feet with an approach. So I figure he's definitely in the high 40's for a standing vert with no steps

Some people just have a higher density of fast twitch muscles then others. People with more fast twitch muscles are generally capable of generating more explosive sudden bursts of strength than most with less fast twitch muscles. Most power athletes have more fast twitch than the average human. Also someone can’t raise their ratio of fast twitch to slow twitch. It’s something you are genetically prone to.
