2015 STI install notes: (appreciated your video very much! I just installed one and thought I would share a couple notes) The bezel is very fragile, I had to drill (open up) the 4 HVAC module holes otherwise they can crack and break using the OEM screws. The top part is even more fragile, I removed the part that holds the hazard and MFD toggle button in place and installed that just prior to final hookup. My first bezel was broken on the top two screw attachment points. Also, to be clear you need to use the OEM antenna. I did not use the iDoing supplied antenna cable. Lastly for 2015 users if you do not care if the reverse camera remains in the MFD and not displayed on the iDoing then just skip that harness all together.
Is there a video or tutorial on how to get the 2015 backup cam to display on HU, even if it displays both. I know you plug some harness into the MFD somewhere but No clue
Dude your an absolute wizard and this has been monumental in helping me plan out my audio setup in my 20’ STI. Thank you so much for making all of these audio related videos.
This is hands down the best video on installing this head unit that I have seen. I just purchased one and it will be installing it this weekend I feel super confident now
Thanks for making this video. One of the best, if not the best in describing the different wiring harnesses. I'm installing an Idoing unit in a 2013 Camry this weekend and frankly, I'm disappointed in the lack of instructions and bad videos out there. Good job!
Appreciate the solid install tutorial bro. I just finished installing mine. Dumb mistake I made was, the 1 spot I didn't tape, I put a tiny gouge in. Oof. I ran the dual USB to my glove box but neither of the USB cords are working or some reason. Not even charging anything. Maybe the USB connection came loose on the HU. MIght pop it back out on a later date and check that. I also picked up the Metra adapter to retain the center console usb. It goes idoing usb -> metra -> car center console usb. Overall, getting the 10mm bolts out was the hardest part for sure. I used a magnetic 10mm socket - made it much easier to not drop bolts. I got lucky and my model didn't have a starlink module. Mine's a 2016 base with base sound system. It also had the backup cam integrated into the 28 pin.
Hey man, just wanted to thank you for this super thorough install. Literally plug-and-play with your detailed video. The only issue I had is with the backup camera not working initially, but it was a matter of just pushing the OEM connector all the way in. Anyways, dope vid!
@@huhinteresting It's been a while so I don't recall, but for me the issue was that one of the connectors was not all the way in and it wasn't obvious until I rechecked all my connections. Follow the tutorial in the video and make sure all the connectors are all the way in.
Yeah just saw, thanks for the heads up! I'm fixing to start back up with my own channel (been retiring from the CG so haven't had much time). Hope all is well with fam!
Boost & Shutter, excellent vide as always and super informative! I'll share my experience with a similar (Joying) unit as for the antenna. The plugs provided by this and other aftermarket radios assume the power for the antenna is from the actual antenna connector, it is NOT. Power for all versions of the factory radio antenna is actually from the i35 connector on pin A8 (yellow). I found this out from both my Joying unit and Kenwood radio using the idatalink kit. Both had horrible stereo reception, I eventually found this out using the Service Manual for my car (2019 WRX) and looking at the wiring diagrams. Once I powered the amplified antenna via the correct pin/connector reception was back to normal. I have (had) the base radio but I checked the other versions and they are all the same. Hope this helps!
Good tip, thanks! I’m planning on installing my Joying head unit this weekend. Joying seems to get mostly good reviews, but hardly any specific reviews for WRX/STi version
Absolutely superb video, since this unit doesn't come with instructions they should pay you for this detailed video it absolutely helped me with my rear camera mix up like you described. Thank you and keep making great videos
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! You did a great job of explaining the extra cables and which ones I wanted to use. I pulled the old unit out and was perplexed with the extra cables, so I put it back together. Now I’m confident I can complete the install.
2017 WRX and I just installed the head unit. Everything works except I can't change the volume or skip songs. There were some connectors that didn't have any place to go but every other feature works fine. Android auto, reverse cam ect
Thanks for the video, it’s been very helpful and informative. I just finished installing mine and it’s great! One thing though, you didn’t mention the 2 additional 10 millimeter bolts that need removed from the sides. There is one behind the glovebox to the left, and one down under the steering wheel and to the right. Recommend to use a magnetic 10mill socket and an extension on both. 🤘
Are you going to post a video about your amplifier installation? Are you skipping the existing speaker wire going to the doors? im very interested in doing the same
What a great video, thank you for the information and details you put in this video. So many TH-cam video's out there showing how to install these Android units but never explain in this simplified way. Thank you!
I don't even own this stereo or car but I know I will be referencing your videos when I replace my Crosstrek's radio with a Pioneer soon. Thanks for the upload!
Thanks for this guide; it was super helpful in getting my installation done. I actually used everything except the dual USB and the extra amp harness. Everything is working except for the mic, for some reason it doesn't pick up anything. Did you have the same issue?
Awesome video. I want this head unit. The only thing I don’t like is wiring for the GPS and Microphone. I’m not sure how to hide to wires. I saw where you put them but can’t figure out exactly how. Seeing those wires would drive me nuts. Still debating to get this or not.
Great Video man! I like that you went through and explained what each cable does. I ended up getting another brand off amazon and they did not send the correct wiring harness. This unit looks way easier. I may have to get this unit instead.
Thanks for the detailed steps. My only issue with my install is lining it up. It's either the top is short to the bottom. cant get both to fit properly. any advice? Thanks!
Sorry for the late reply. Yes I was able to by pushing both sides with a little bit of force. Started from bottom and aligned the top and push both sides in.
Ya I struggled with this when trying to finish it, I found multiple posts on the issue saying you just had to give it a bunch of force to push it into place. Once I gave it more force it popped right in
You make the best videos! Extremely detailed and direct. Everything you need to know to do a full install. Hope to see you soon. Saw what happened on IG. Blessings.
I successfully installed this on a 2018 Subaru. However the electronic parking brake light is on all the time. How do I get it to turn off? I read that I need to ground the break wire from the Idoing unit. That's not working.
This is one of the few install videos that get the actual clipping of the plastic bezel in with no problems. One video the top wasn't even clipped in. Since the stock bolt in brackets aren't used that would not be very safe. I assume you aligned all three at the same time before pushing it in?
Here are some tips for putting in the head unit: 1) Make sure the inside is clear so no wires/harness is in the way when you push the head unit in. 2) Align the top clips around the vent bezels first. 3) Once they are all in, place a hand on the surface at the top to keep the clips down and in place while taking your other hand and pressing in the clips at the very bottom. You will have to slightly bend (I know that sounds scary but it's not actually bending the unit) to make sure the bottom clips are aligned in the correct position. 4) After the top and bottom clips are aligned, gently push in the sides of the head unit to pop everything in place. Gently press all around the top, bottom, and sides to confirm it's all in.
Thank you for the detailed explanation. This is a great tutorial. I just have one question: I have a 2021 WRX with and I’m planning on getting iDoing unit and after market audio system. What cable should I use to connect amp ignition?
Awesome video! Bro I will install kicker oem speakers on my STI. Will this head unit Amplify those speakers?? If so how many watts per speaker? I was between doing this or just leaving STOCK head unit and installing ALPINE INLINE AMP to it to amplify kicker speakers… So I want to know which route would be best?? And as far as SOUND quality which is better… Thanks!
Great video and way helpful. I have a base 18 STI and the speakers sound like garbage. Does this unit help with sound at all? I’m not wanting to upgrade all the speakers yet. Main reason for getting a new unit is for CarPlay. That’s for all ur great videos man.
Great video! I used your guide to install my radio and it works flawlessly! Well almost. I wish there was a good way to keep factory usb/aux locations for the radio but I'm sure I could find something online for that. Hi, can you help me? I'm interested in buying the radio, but I have a question and does it keep the 2 original USB ports or are there cables left in the glove box?
Just installed mine according to your video, and I cannot seem to get the rear speakers to work. Everything is plugged in except for the two you had left over, the white plug and the ground. I have the telemetrics box, and I plugged in the green port as well, I noticed you did not. Is there reasoning for that? Overall, amazing install guide vid 😀
I just order this 2 minutes ago. PLEASE BABY JESUS PLEASEEE!!! Let this work correctly and not have issues like certain parts of the radio, steering wheel or back up camera not work. PLEASE FOR ALL THAT IS HOLY 😣😭
Do you happen to know the voltage output of the preamp outputs for the iDoing? I didn’t hear you mention it in any of your videos and couldn’t find it online either. Thanks for the help!
Thank you for the awesome video! Finally someone who actually explained the reverse camera wires! I have mine hooked up exactly like u have it in your video, with the 5 pin connection, but I'm still getting NO SIGNAL when I put it in reverse?? Can't seem to figure out what the issue is? 2018 base model wrx sti. Any ideas? 🤔
I was deadass freaking out about the red yellow white cables. Thinking there was going to be some inside before taking out the stock HU. But nope. 💀 also good to know that telemetry box or whatever works the starlink if I decide to turn that back on
Why wouldn't you need the ground wire? Whoever installed mine did it in a way that whenever I touch the screen, I ground it and static goes away. Not good unless you're always touching it.
This vid is perfect 2020 STI here too. Would you recommend cutting and shortening the wires you don’t need and wrapping them with electrical tape to create more free space back there?
Great video!!! I purchased an Idoing and I have had it for months now however I’m running into an issue with the blue tooth microphone no one can hear me when I try to talk to them. Any ideas?
Great video. I’m planning to change my OEM whole system. In my STI 2021 base model! Ordered already OEM kickers, tweeter, speaker, subwoofer. Is the USB,AUX in the center/arm rest still gonna work if I’m goin to idoing headunit?thanks
Great video! thanks for the detailed instructions. I have one question. You didn't re-use the metal install brackets from the OEM unit for the new unit or the telematics unit. Are there alignment issues if you use them?
I watch your install video and it was on point. The only thing did not work on my head unit is there is no sound coming out when using bluetooth for my music and calls. Do you know why? Or is there anything I have to change in settings? Thanks!
Amazing explanation of the whole setup. Can you make a small video of what route you would prefer now for upgrading sound in subaru wrx/sti?, for example if you have to do from stock. Thanks for these amazing videos. After watching your videos I'm thinking about doing my audio myself as well
Man I have watched this several times and i dont get it. Mine has zero sound coming from it and Ive undone and redone it several times now. It turns on with no issues but i have no sound from anything. The telematics unit is connected and pluged in as well as all the other connectors that I need
I have a 21 limited with HK / Got it installed and everything works and sounds great. Only thing I noticed is the Starlink up in the headliner is illuminated red now. Did you run in to that issue? I moved the telematics over as you did and verified all wires are seated as well as reset the car by unhooking the battery for a few minutes.
I ordered similar unit from aliexpress. Im having issues with hk subwoofer and front driver side speakers. When i wiggle the 16 pin connector sound comes in and out its not a setting issue. I opened the unit and checked with a multimeter or solder joints all connected. I just cant figure out whats wrong with it. Seller is no help and refuse to send a replacement or refund i tried everything.
@Boost and Shutter - Just got one for my STI and had a pioneer in there before. That one never really worked properly and when I took it off the previous owner has got all kinds of different wires spliced and harness' etc.. I have those 2 grey connectors for the telematics unit, but there isn't one on this current unit. Does that mean I need to purchase a new telematics unit for it to work properly?
Hey guys, I have a 2018 wrx with a Harmon kardon system and it works great BUT I have absolutely no sound. Any ideas or suggestions or has anyone else encountered this problem
Great video ... Question I installed the Idoing Head Unit in my 2017 WRX that had Harman Kardon and unit works but the speaker output sound is louder on the front Passenger side. If i change the field and shit to each corner of the car its softer on driver front and rear and passenger rear but way louder on the front passenger.. Any idea's why ? I reached out to idoing and they said they had no idea
This is the best install video I’ve seen for these units. Thank you. I have a 2017 STi with the Harmon Kardon system. I have everything working but the backup camera. I don’t have the Yellow Cable that some seem to have. So I connected like you did in the video. The other wrinkle is that about a year ago I had Best Buy install a Kenwood unit. They had to add a some extra components, something like a Meastro. Any idea what else I might try? The unit recognizes that the car is in reverse, the screen goes black and then it says there is no signal.
I did exactly what you did especially with my telematics, still getting no audio from my front speakers only bass, could it be a faulty head unit or canbus?
Great video as always! I would assume you did a ton of research between the different brands with similar head units for the WRX/STI, what got you to buy the idoing vs the others? Btw, Your timing is perfect! I was looking for a dashcam and then boom you come in clutch with the 70mai, I'm also getting a head unit soon and im very glad you came this route!
I read through some forums and this one seemed the safer one. I was more worried about it getting lost in the mail than anything else 😅 Glad my channel is proving useful!
@@akqjtn I hear ya, iDoing is getting a lot of good opinions, im actually looking at Joying which cough my eye first because it has a physical volume knob, but upon further research I see they have been around for some time and have good reception among their users.

I appreciate the work you do brother, thorough and straight to the point.
Update: I ordered mine and now am awaiting delivery. I'm hoping it shows up sooner than expected
Hello. I was wondering if there was a spot to plug the oem kicker subwoofer? Didn’t see this mentioned? Great video, trying to tackle this myself.
Did you ever figure this out? Is there one? I’ve been thinking of pulling the trigger on this HU but still skeptical
Yeah there’s like a splitter/adapter where you can plug in the sub then plug into the head unit
thanks bro!!! best step by step on YT.
Great video! thanks for the detailed instructions. I have one question. You didn't re-use the metal install brackets from the OEM unit for the new unit or the telematics unit. Are there alignment issues if you use them?
I tried to reuse them on mine and the holes didn't line up.
I watch your install video and it was on point. The only thing did not work on my head unit is there is no sound coming out when using bluetooth for my music and calls. Do you know why? Or is there anything I have to change in settings? Thanks!
Thanks for the video couldn’t have done the install without you🙏🏼 where you get that phone mount from though?

Do we not use the old bolts that held the stock head unit anymore?
Amazing explanation of the whole setup. Can you make a small video of what route you would prefer now for upgrading sound in subaru wrx/sti?, for example if you have to do from stock. Thanks for these amazing videos. After watching your videos I'm thinking about doing my audio myself as well
There's a lot more info in this channel look for some older videos from when he had his WRX. He did a looot on that one.
Did you see my last video before this one? The video description has some links to my WRX car audio videos.
@@akqjtn yes. I'll follow them, thanks for the the amazing content.
You mentioned that you were not going to install the 4g antenna and sim card, but you installed the GPS. Why did you install that?
any reason to not get the databus adaptor so you can use the subaru usb ports? Running to the glove box seems a bit hack, no?
Great video and what phone mount is this?

This is a hard install don't believe he's skilled lol
Can you show how you routed your mic and usb? I’m trying to figure out my placement for the usb and how to place my mic in a good spot
Great video. Do you know any source for crosstrek 2016 premium idoing installation? I’m having hard time with back camera. No signal.
I have a 2019 WRX and was wondering if there is anything you can tell me about the CAN BUS decoder. Does it need to be installed?
what would happen if you dont install the microphone? doesn't the car have one already to pick up your voice for hands free calling?
Whats the difference between the 4g-64g and 8g-128g one?
Hey guys, I have a 2018 wrx with a Harmon kardon system and it works great BUT I have absolutely no sound. Any ideas or suggestions or has anyone else encountered this problem
Great video ... Question I installed the Idoing Head Unit in my 2017 WRX that had Harman Kardon and unit works but the speaker output sound is louder on the front Passenger side. If i change the field and shit to each corner of the car its softer on driver front and rear and passenger rear but way louder on the front passenger.. Any idea's why ? I reached out to idoing and they said they had no idea
Man this looks awesome I definitely want one of these
This is the best install video I’ve seen for these units.
Make sure that cable is installed where I show in the video. The connector actually fits two other places where it will not work.
Also, you have the can bus adapter? I think HK systems require it.
Thanks for the quick reply. I double checked the harness position and I have the car bud installed.
So helpful. Thank you so much!
I did exactly what you did especially with my telematics, still getting no audio from my front speakers only bass, could it be a faulty head unit or canbus?
I feel like i missed the part where the back up camera comes into play… i dont have my backup camera now any advice ?
Also I noticed they release frequent firmware updates.
The GPS says looking for signal and never stops. Can’t get the gps to work and I’ve hooked it up correctly
Very informative installation video. Just install mine follow what you did but i got the starlink turns red have you encountered that? any idea what went wrong?
