I was gonna say... if i'm spending the money for a head unit like this, I wouldn't even care about wiring up the usb because i'd only use wireless carplay
I ordered from Carmaspeed, and it was a good experience. I was contacted before shipping to double-validate my make/model/HK choice, and the unit I received was correct. I did have a couple issues during install that this video doesn't cover (or at least not clearly enough for me to understand). 1) The OEM unit has side bolts that require significantly more effort to access and remove (unless you're tiny and maybe have slightly more exotic tooling). In order to get enough access to to get my ratchet positioned, I had to drop the full glove box housing (not just the drawer), the drive-side bottom panels, and the airbag housing (don't unplug the bag, just drop the whole thing and let it rest on the floor). 2) Removing the HVAC controls from the 2016 OEM unit required some additional effort. The top 2 screws were strangely guarded by metal tabs on the unit housing. I had to use pliers to forcibly bend the tabs out to access the screws. It's possible the screws might be accessible through the tabs by a long slim screwdriver, but I didn't have any that would fit. 3) I don't know what the full comparison from 2015 STi to 2016 WRX Limited w/HK would be, but I had more than one wire with unclear purpose. Luckily, one had a QR code label I was able to look up on Subaru's site (was the OEM GPS cable). The other turned out to be related to the backup camera. There was an adapter in the box, but I didn't see any explanation for where to plug it in to the unit. There were 2 spots that would accept the plug, and I chose poorly. When I was done, the backup camera didn't work. I eventually found another video where someone specifically referenced this cable and which socket was appropriate. After I moved the cable, the backup camera worked. 4) I can't remember if this happened during CarPlay setup or simply Bluetooth, but I was asked for pin to authenticate the connection. I had to google this, and the suggested all "0"s worked. Although it took a lot of effort, it was mostly getting the OEM unit out, not getting this unit in. I've installed several stereos in various vehicles, and this was the easiest from the perspective of getting the new unit to work properly with the car's systems. I hope to have many good years with the unit.
GET THIS if you are able to! You will not regret it. Got mine for a 2017 Forester & I love it. Especially during road trips. NOTE: I had a Sub and amp with converter already wired in & while I was nervous the system wouldn't play correctly, Everything worked just fine. Till this day no issues. Only advice I have after a year+ with this headunit is if CarPlay sometimes won't connect just reboot the headunit & it will work just fine.
I installed a 9" headunit into my 2008 Toyota Corolla. I bought the headunit for $130 off ebay, and I wasn't expecting the best, but holy hell it is fantastic! Really surprised me how smooth and well it worked.
Just saw this comment after I made one about wireless. I'm super happy to see this unit, for the price, includes wireless. To me that would be the biggest selling point. Most "name brand" radios with wireless carplay start with base features at $500 and none of the extras this has.
Did you do the same manipulations? I saw people removing a lot more plastics (under the steering wheel and in front of the passenger) to install their iDoing head unit.
@CodyCaron. Was the disassembly for your 2020 the same as the video? I’ve seen the same videos of people taking off a lot of plastic under the steering wheel as well.
I installed one of these in a 2015 outback. Metra sells a USB adapter that allows you to use the factory USB port. Looks like Subaru uses the same connector. As long as the factory USB only has one port. The dual USB port doesn't work with aftermarket radios since it shows up as a USB hub. but you can be swap out the USB port with a factory single USB and it will work. Had to do this with the Outback.
Think these are next on my to do list for my STI... I used to work in car audio and would shudder when customers brought in their ebay head units (remember the brand Eonon?) but these seem to be good and offer a tidy OEM-look solution that Alpine/Pioneer can't offer. Nice video, one of the best on the unit. Cheers!
ProTip: Check your stuff BEFORE modifying anything. If that cable did not work, then he would have had a custom compartment without the function. Check BEFORE doing anything.
Wish the stock head units didn’t suck so badly on the WRX. They need to ditch the vertical garbage; they also need digital gauge clusters too on all trims.
Ive heard the idoing head units are hit or miss, i guess it depends on what day your unit was manufactured. TY for doing this video...probably putting 1 of these in my 2017 WRX Premium model.
My touchscreen just gave out and this video is super appreciated for those who are hesitant on a “big electrical mod “, like this! Question, is anything else needed for Apple car play?
Great install video with an actual HK system! One thought: I use the Bluetooth car play adapter from Motorola, I bet I could plug it into the car play female from the idoing and leave it tucked behind the radio for a seamless fit and function without the extension and cutting of the center. Great job installing it too, just a thought for those who use the wireless adapters

Too many questions for me. Like reverse camera, or the traffic alert/blind spot sounds and the start up sound. Does all that still work? Also I still use CDs so maybe this isn’t the one for me. Looks really good though. Glad you’re happy with it.
It's a nice headunit, but consistency of establishing connection to your phone sucks being wired or through Bluetooth. Sometimes it won't connect. It'll say connected and just stay loading and won't launch apple car play or Android auto

Hi, I just saw your video about the Idoing. I have a Subaru Forester 2013 X Premium, and I decided to keep it many more years, so I want to upgrade its OEM Clarion radio. And your video strongly grabbed my attention. So I have a couple of questions for you so you can give me more lights about the decision I have to make, whether to choose for a well known Brand or Idoing that has a lot more and interesting features as well as the biggest screen in the market and practically everything included to perform the installation. Does it come with all the HW I need to install in my Forester? I want to keep the Steering Wheel Control, Aux input, USB port input, External Mic input, Bypass Parking Brake video Override, Include a Backup Camera (iT DOESNT HAVE ONE SO i WILL NEED TO RUN VIDEO CABLE), so I need to have the Reverse activation functionality. The OEM Subaru Radio, is a Clarion Brand, Unit # CP635U1, attached you will see pics of the radio and dashboard. I would like to know, if through the USB port, is it possible that the unit can recognize a external DVD via USB port, I have one connected in my laptop and works great so I was wondering if the native android OS would recognize it. Thank you so much for your kind attention.

Sorry if this was already asked but just seeing if I can get Waze/gps on that screen ? If so I’m buying today for my 2018 WRX . I hate that I have to mount a phone holder on my AC vent to have maps up
I installed one in my 2016 WRX, and I ended up not using any bolts for the new unit. I tried looking for a spot for the side bolts from the OEM unit, but didn't see anything that would work. The whole thing snaps in very tightly, so I don't think it's going to be an issue. I've had to pull it back off twice now, and it's pretty tough to pop out. If you're wondering, the first time was due to not knowing where to hook up the backup camera (2 spots fit, I chose poorly), and then I stupidly forgot to plug the hazard and info panel buttons back in when I was done fixing the backup camera.
I've owned 3 different Android Headunits and all 3 require installing some sketchy app onto my cellphone to get Android Auto/Apple Carplay to work. This is even with my Dasaita unit, which Dasaita is considered one of the better brands. I simply avoid that "Feature".
I have the 2015 Subaru wrx sti launch edition. Which one would be compatible considering my car is base model by the looks of it. I recently got it so I’m not to familiar but previous owner had a small Sony old school cd player on it instead of the original head unit.
I don't know if this is viable given the system already in place, but instead of sticking the microphone in the corner of the windshield, why not position it under the stock microphone plate? I have a 2010 which means no native Bluetooth, so I ended up ordering a 2011+ piece to get the grate for an OEM look.
Best spot for the mic is dead centre of the instrument cluster, only need to pop out the 2 screws at the top to feed the cable through, and stick it down with double sided tape.
Awesome video! Great run through of the install process. +1 for The Darkness @15:33!! Subscribed. Been looking for an answer on this one though.. I've seen that you can dim the screen directly by tapping on an icon, but does this unit also work with the OEM dimmer dial?
NGL, I'd pick a euro car over anything else any day of the week so not familiar with the interior of most Asian cars! But wow! Man that factory radio is incredibly outdated! Good job tho, looks really sleek!
Hello. I have been thinking changing the radio of my STI 2020. How is the sound? I'm not very picky with this, as long as it sounds strong with a good bass, it would be fine. I have the STI 2020 limited, it comes with Hardam Kardon, I like the sound a lot and I don't want me to change the quality.
Does the 2016 wrx have the same center console as the 2017? When I’m shopping on carmaspeed the only option for a 2016 wrx is “with Harmon kardon” but there is a 2017 model for “no Harmon kardon”
I can confirm this does have wireless Apple CarPlay! I should have added it in the video but it works great 💪🏻
Both android auto and apple car play are wireless right? So wouldnt need to route a usb cable other than for charging a phone?

It looks nice man I gonna save some money that head unit is great.
I have the 2015 Subaru wrx sti launch edition. Which one would be compatible considering my car is base model by the looks of it. I recently got it so I’m not to familiar but previous owner had a small Sony old school cd player on it instead of the original head unit.
I just installed this head unit and everything works great...but now my my three dash buttons won't work is that something to do with the head unit?
Does this fit a 2015 Impreza Premium? I only have the one big hazard button at the top, not 2 separate buttons.
Yep! It has night and day mode.
I saw that too lol “ you’re really growing on me” love that song
@@CameronAlford Cool, thanks!
Hey Cameron just wondering are you still making content for the MAZDASPEED 3? Was super keen to see the installation of the new mods
Can you just reuse all the pre installed wires?
Does this work on my 2018 STI? And how can i make sure what speaker brand i have?
NGL, I'd pick a euro car over anything else any day of the week so not familiar with the interior of most Asian cars!
But wow! Man that factory radio is incredibly outdated!
Good job tho, looks really sleek!
NICE another Subaru content
Of course I order from you guys and state several times in email and with pictures that I have a harmon kardon and they don't include the canbus
Does the back up camera work?
Doesn't a GPS antenna need to "see" the sky? As in be in an unobstructed area to receive signal?
U can doodle the question mark tho, it wasn't failed
Any idea for no signal for back up camera?
if you didn't put the gps antenna, apple carplay wouldn't work at all, good thing you did put it in
Great video now you just need a wirelss careplay dongle and you can be full wireless!
Looks like this unit includes it which I also thought would be the BIGGEST selling point and he ignored it completely.
I wish something like this headunit/trim piece combo was available for the Focus ST
such a great how to video. thanks for putting this together.
Hi mate. What is the model and part numbers for this unit. I have subaru impreza 2018 hatchback. Does it fit my car?. Thanks
doesnt fit my 2016 subaru wrx limited. :( bummer. was totally gonna buy one.
I thought I was the only person would gladly take built in Navigation and have Apple Carplay in a car. 14:08
Am I able to keep my backup camera on the little stock screen on top instead of the unit screen?
I just ordered one for my Lancer and it was free shipping... but... 600 CAD....
Nice video man. I love my idoing headunit 💪
