Excellent Video and a big THANK YOU! as I took my new 2002 Ram 2500 6.4L Hemi to three different dealerships over past week as I was certain there was something wrong. Had exact same sound as your video and it does go away after the engine gets warmed up. Very high pitch, hollow aluminum like ticking sound at start up. Last about 2-4 min. All thee Ram techs told me it takes about 3-5 min for the oil to lubricate the entire big block Hemi engine and this is NOT the "Hemi Tick" or manifold exhaust leak. My truck had 4 miles on it as I was first and only test drive at dealership and I did not hear it as sales person did a remote start from inside the dealership and let it run before we I test drove it. Makes total sense now.

Good to know they “beefed up” the gaskets and manifold bolts for the 6.4… And my 2020 Power Wagon sounds the exact same from day 1 (injectors on these trucks are loud also). Can’t wait for your comparison vid.

I recommend if you have a Ram Hemi 5.7 or 6.4 to Upgrade the oil pump. Idling these trucks for long periods of time is not good for the rear lifters and Cam. This is because they don't have enough oil pressure at Idle RPM causing the infamous "Hemi tick". Hellcat oil pumps and High Performance oil pumps from Melling is a great recommendation.

Good informative post. I have a 2018 Challenger R/T that sounds very much like this...a subtle metallic-type noise but not quite the typical exhaust leak. Dead quiet when listening from the top side other than normal injector noises. Used full 5W-20 synth from 1K every ~3500 miles. The only time it does a cold start lifter rattle is if I run it from cold start and shut down before the oil temp reaches 130. 100% of my restarts after that will rattle for a few seconds.

I think the ticking you're hearing down low is being generated/amplified by that particular exhaust. The same hemi 5.7 is used in 2018 ram and 2022 ram 5th gens, but the 5th gens have different exhaust and definitely louder tick under the truck right from the factory. Just comparing my brand new 5th gen to another family members brand new 4th gen classic.

I mean potentially! it does seem like the fifth gen 6.4's do have an odd metallic sounding exhaust under the truck. my 4th gen ram was a little ticky but didn't have sound this truck does. Nothing wrong either way just thought it was interesting!

I just had the gaskets and bolts replaced on my '13 Power Wagon 5.7 L. I can attest that my truck went from very quiet to ticking on start-up. Once the truck warmed up, it got quiet again. I left it that way for a while and it got slowly worse. Think I even lost some ponies from it. 4 bolts were broken. 1 bolt broke at the outside edge of the manifold, so there was something to bite onto to remove. The other 3 broke off at the block, requiring hex nut be rosette welded to the ends, so they could be removed safely. The new hardware is stainless, so hopefully it holds up better.

The "mechanical squeeky resonance" you are hearing on start up is the catalytic converters warming up to temp. Then when the truck is warm you will be hearing the incredibly loud injector noise from the higher performance injectors on these engines. You are not hearing lifter noise on these engines at all, they are roller hydraulic lifters. Maybe a little rocker noise on an engine with some miles on it, but not lifter noise. I am a regional MOPAR tech rep with Chrysler 30+ years experience. The 6.4L hemi is superior to the 5.7 in just about every way. The 5.7 is really just a SUV duty engine not meant for severe service like the 6.4L truck engine.

I’ve owned many trucks over the years and they all have had there own unique sound. The Hemi is no different. I bought a new 1993 Mazda B2600i pickup.I was sure there was something wrong with the engine because it had a very loud ticking noise. I was assured it was normal. At 330,000 miles, it needed all new seals so I sold it. As far as I know, it’s still going. Don’t be fooled by all the hype about the Hemi tick. This is one really tough engine.

I bought a new 2022 Dodge Challenger R/T 5.7L Hemi June 2022 - my husband and I spent 10 years saving for our dream car. I noticed there was a ticking noise from the engine which I thought was the "HEMI tick." It was a slight ticking noise at cold start coming from the passenger side and then after a few seconds it would stop ticking.
In August, 2022, we had put 2000 miles on the car and we were on a weekend road trip.
The engine started to make loud noises and started shaking. Then the engine and electrical light turned. Then suddenly, the motor stalled and shut off while in motion on the highway going 80 mph!!!! 😳 😱 🤬
My husband had to drive by using strange maneuvers, putting in N with brakes and pumping the gas, when it idled it would shut off. Had to do this all the way to the dealer since the tow truck would have been late by an hour and the service department would have been closed.
The dealer said it was a cylinder 5 misfire - which ended up a valve dropping and cracking the cylinder - they had to change the long block and the intake manifold, due to catastrophic damage.
One of the techs insinuated it was the MDS system that closes 4 valves at highway speed to reduce fuel consumption.
Till this date, the car is still at the dealer, which is an hour away from our house.
I found out there is a class action lawsuit against FCA due to the 5.7 and 6.4 HEMI that are not supercharged, having issues with the MDS engines stalling issues which report from NHTSA of the same thing happening to people on the highway, which is a huge safety issue, especially while driving at highway speeds.
I didn’t know about the Class Action because it wasn’t showing up on the Internet until late June once a complaint was filed. If I would’ve known I would’ve not purchased a car.
This is my daily driver and my husband and I are seriously scared for my safety. Dodge doesn't want to do a buyback and I am having to get an attorney involved because it is not reasonable a new car has these issues.
I hope this helps your viewers and beware about buying any HEMI products!!!!

I absolutely hate that my truck sounds THIS BAD at startup. I wish I never bought it but can't afford the depreciation hit I would take selling it this soon.

Side steps/running boards might help, believe it or not, they catch a lot that the flaps don't. You can get offroad styled ones too, you don't have to get the city slicker style.

The rocks will wear away at the paint but so will the flares themselves on an old truck I took the flares off then linex’d the spot and reinstalled . Can get a spray can for like 20-30$ from Canadian tire .

You can try doing ppf just on the side rear. Some people like to get a clear bra which is ppf to just protect the front of the vehicle since that wear most of the scratches happen. In your case you can do just do rear sides so that it’s cost effective. Ppf on an entire truck can be pretty expensive. Ceramic pro is also an option.

Running boards would help with keeping stones and sand away from the box and cils. But you got like that look. I always have running boards. I’m 54 and always had better success from stone chips and rusting. While other trucks that don’t have them seems to chip and rust more. My thoughts.

More lifter issues on these 6.4s than the 5.7s. Oh well that's what the warranty is for I suppose. Real nice truck here. I've run the magic bottle solution for a few oil changes, quiets up the 5.7 a bit. Liqui Moly Ceratec you can get it off Amazon. 117k km on my 5.7 here now and kicked it out of a dealer to a private shop now. Should try 3M automotive film under those fender flares and mudguards. My mudguards with all that frozen slush hanging off them and vibrating actually ate through the clear and paint right down to the metal. Chrysler Canada had me pay a good faith warranty deductible 200 bucks for the auto body shop to fix it up. Pretty sure they knew they would not make the corrosion warranty and they would have paid more down the road. Anyways auto body shop put the film underneath the mud guards at my request.
