But its amazing that we live in a day and age where we can gain self awareness and question our own actions and thoughts, which was impossible for most people to do without the information we have now! Human tendency to idolize something and someone also is profitable for businesses. Like Kpop is popular because the industry's goal is to construct groups and individuals that are seemingly perfect to get people as hooked as possible for money. Supply and demand.

Morals are dying. Toxic behavior is normalized and no one is perfect so of course there’s gonna be so many famous people nowadays being problematic. Cancel culture happens bc the fans are not perfect either. We all have these behavior flaws. Things are also too justified that’s why I narrow it down to no one can be perfect with anything we do or try. And it seems like the world is gonna get worse from here. I hope for the best as far as social media goes with new influencers. This video was well put, I love your content, keep shining girl

I don’t think people are any worse than they’ve ever been. We simply put a spotlight on a wider range of bad behaviors committed by public figures. And information spreads so fast because of the internet. The main difference is there seems to be more kids getting famous than ever, and that’s definitely not a great thing.

I feel like we forget how quickly we become hypocrites, the fast cancelling does nothing but cause division and doesnt actually solve problems. i think this video would have been much better received if it were not centered around an alleged sa. describing this scenario as drama and staying neutral in order to be objective is quite strange considering the context. i have found this argument to be very common though, which is whats so disheartening. that somehow the harsh state of our justice system is playing into how we ostracize people for being abusive, whether it be online or in person. when in reality, both our justice system and societal norms actually do a great job at letting sexual predators off the hook. abusers are forgiven by their friends and family as well as the law, and if not forgiven then met with great skepticism aimed at the victim in the situation. out of all the crime you could do, sa is one of the least prosecutable. its hard to have this discussion under the idea of fairness, when the victims of sa are always made to carry the burden of proof in these situations. literally any other crime would have been great for this video but sa just doesnt fit the bill imo

They have the right to not give you a second chance. No one is "owed" a second chance from the ppl they hurt. Bill Cosby could go to therapy but I'm still forever not going to trust him. That's the issue with rehabilitation is you have to trust the person and some of these ppl are just plain untrustworthy

Cancellation system it's disgusting... I also think people can change if they want to and receive professional help in deeper situations, but I see a lot of people saying "if you did something bad, you are and always will be a bad person". Accepting that idea means that you think you are exactly the same person, with the same ideas and personality than 10 years ago and that who you are now even though you don't like thinks about your personality and want to change them, you never will be able to change those things even if you get professional help. Thank you Oli for all your vids, I love people who made videos about important subjects but most important, people that ARE NOT JUDGMENTAL and always tries to be FAIR!

I’m afraid to scan through the comments on this video because, as you predicted, you might be getting a lot of heat about your opinions. But I want to say: I have recently became acutely aware of the problematic nature of the “Twitter justice system”, and how easily people convince themselves that they are experts in any situation they hear about on social media and don’t think twice before passing judgment in a sometimes permanently damaging way. I want to thank you for speaking up about this. Even when you express your opinions, even when you say things that I might not 100% agree with, you do so in a respectful and thought-provoking manner and I really appreciate you so much for that! 🙏🏻

  • @acdude5266

You are spot on. A book from the 1980s names The Culture of Narcissism had the following quote:
"When feeling despair, they tend to seek out others with whom they can idealize and identify, in order to bask in these others' glow."
    Christopher Lasch
"When we admire the accomplishments of others, we make them our own."
    Voltaire
Looks is driven by evolutionary need to pass on our genes, according to scientists, much as for peacock.
I've noticed that the.mosr viewed "Van Life" videos, though very interesting, are mostly posted by attractive young females. We kasi know that 80 to 90 % of "attention" is scored by 10 to 20% of the men. A whopping 40% of men do not procreate and the number is increasing with the obsession of looks and vicarious celebrity on social media, one of many effects of Narcissism that Dr. Lasch feared.

Around 11:28 you seem to be implying that it's the pressure from fame that causes their problematic behavior - that it makes otherwise good people to act poorly. But your causation is entirely backwards.
Not long ago, people had to compete through corporate channels to get famous - and those channels acted as filters. Nowadays, fame has been democratized. It's very accessible - just about anybody can get a camera and upload. And I'm definitely not saying that's a bad thing, but it means there are no filters to who becomes famous - it's 100% up to whether there is an audience for the material. So, of course when looking at a sample of tik-tok-famous people, there is going to be a bias toward a certain type of person who is compelled to upload videos of themselves - narcissists, sociopaths, attention-whores.
Fame doesn't make people do bad things. Fame certainly enables people to do bad things, but I think more-so, we just like to watch these types of people. Our lizard brains are drawn to sociopaths - it's why Trump became president. We make bad people famous because there is an energy and power in that sociopathy, and they are out there working for that attention.
Couple that with the fact that fame is increasingly becoming stratified within groups - people are vain and just want to watch people they can identify with and see themselves in. These apps cater our self-absorbed interests because it matches up influencers and the influenced very well. Young people want to watch young people, and tik-tok is becoming Lord of the Flies.

this is a good point that i admittedly did not consider and i agree it plays a part, but i don't think my causation is *entirely* backwards. so many celebrities (not just those from tiktok) have stories about the peer pressure they faced when they became famous, particularly in their youth, and how it can feel extremely overwhelming to the point where they handle it in unhealthy ways

Love your vids, one thought I’ve noticed recently is that in real life there aren’t true heroes and villains. Every “good” person has done bad things and every “bad” person has done good things. Your Hitler example is a perfect analogy, and the fact that we chose celebrities often without looking at their character means they we’re going to pick people with unsavory characters, even if we like some of what they do.
