    Now that freckles are trending really makes me feel horrible, since I was heavily bullied and harassed for them. But now everyone is complimenting me even the people who bullied me for them. I like that people are being more accepting but it’s hard for me to take a compliment and undo all that trauma. I’m a darker Asian and i have been brainwashed by beauty standards to not go in the sun so now I’m very pale. Im trying to go out and enjoy myself and embrace the melanin in my skin like my beautiful mother. But it takes time to undo the hurtful standards placed over us all.

    • @imgonnawinwin3451
      @imgonnawinwin3451 2 ปีที่แล้ว +110

      True, while it’s good that things like freckles, darker & tanned skin, and asian features are ‘wanted’ now, it’ll never reverse the trauma. I feel the same, I avoid the sun or wear heavy sunscreen because of my skin colour being more tan, but now people come up to me and ask me how I get my skin such a pretty colour.

    Here in Japan these sorts of filters have become so commonplace it's kinda scary. Japanese people have always took issue with showing their faces in photos in public spaces, and with the rise of social media and stuff like tik tok, just the usual facial blur/sticker/unrelated avatar often doesn't cut it anymore. people are becoming only happy with their appearance if it's through a heavy filter and god forbid any pores show up... Honestly I don't think I know any japanese person who is confident about their face, to make matters worse with their strict beauty standards and filter culture I can only see this getting worse.
    anyway, I hope this channel takes off!! I can definitely see that, and you already have a good chunk of videos on your belt. keep 'em coming :)

      @plzleavemealone9660 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Purikura definitely started this and now we have Snow...
      What is funny is that while growing up in Japan people always compared their skin tone to mine (putting their arms next to mine), usually out of boredom at school but it still messed with me.
      I remember almost buying skin whitening cream that someone recommended to me after the sports festival.
      Then a year later I went to Europe for three months. I started using Instagram which at the time wasn't popular in Japan yet and I got so insecure about my pale skin. I compared myself to all the tan and beautiful instagram models. I couldn't even look in the mirror anymore. Many in Europe said I looked like a dead person. When I went to buy medicine for my acne the lady behind the counter asked me if I was alright because I looked so ''pale''. I couldn't find foundation for myself either because in Europe brown skin is more ''desirable''.
      After coming home to Japan tho, I realized how ridiculous all of that is.

Initially I thought keeping tiktok was a good idea but after deleting it as well, I realized that social media platforms promoting any sort of unachievable beauty standard or curation of a “perfect” life caused those insecurities in the first place. • @stepahead5944

    Completely right about freckles and Chinese beauty standards. I remember a controversy a few years back because a major magazine, maybe Vogue, had a Chinese cover model who Chinese people considered ugly. People felt like it was slander to the nation and an intentional effort to portray Chinese women as ugly. The model had monolids and freckles among other features. Truthfully she had the look comparable to other cover models who are chosen for their district features (tooth gaps, wide set eyes, etc) but that wasn't a point that people wanted to acknowledge.
    I actually like the makeup filters from Snow, 斗音,etc. I just *hate* how it completely washes out my skin and removes virtually any trace of my melanin.

      @boxingelfis1499 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Mari_011 Hey so I read both of yours and her comments and I thought could provide a perspective that might be helpful.
      Now, something that I've noticed about beauty is that a majority of it is subjective. There are people who have physical or facial features that are a pleasure to look at, but with such insubstantial personalities and characters, that their external beauty often gets over looked. The truth about beauty as I see it, is that though you can attain people's attention just by how you look, it is *who you are* that not only retains but even motivates other people's positive perception of yourselves.
      So for example, if you are a confident, kind, respectful and respectable person, there'd be a lot less people trying to tell you how unpretty they think you are, largely because they would notice the true friendship, acceptance and purpose your characters would earn you that simple physical beauty could never have, but also because they would know that their opinions are of little importance to you as you are secure in and about yourself.
      Another thing I think would be helpful to consider is that you should find challenging but meaningful goals that you can earnestly and patiently immerse yourselves in, because as you fail and succeed in pursuit of those goals, you will find your self confidence improving, through your perseverance and discipline, and other people's comments will start affecting you less and less.
      The reason I believe that doing this is effective, is because I think that the worry of superficial things like our looks, are a manifestation of a deep rooted need to have some form of control in our lives and the looks department seems to be the easiest. But when others effortlessly look better than we do, it gets to us to the point that we might even bully others to just make ourselves feel good.... working towards truly earnestly developing yourselves consistently, gives you real control that cannot be shaken by the mere words of others.

    I am naturally freckled and my face is covered in them, but I was heavily bullied about them growing up. The things people would say and do because of them were cruel and scarring. Seeing them become popularised isn’t as heartwarming as one might think because of these reasons. I’m not flattered by people giving themselves fake freckles, especially since they only put them over their cheeks and nose (maybe one or two out of place), because it reinforces the idea that having freckles all over is still ugly. It’s also just uncomfortable to see the people who bullied me so badly for them, suddenly faking them and acting as if they have always loved them. I don’t know, this whole fake freckles trend is kinda weird for me

      Tbh, I sort of sympathize but not with freckles. I have no freckles what so ever (but never saw freckles as an imperfection. They are literally just different looking skin, people overreact by bullying) but I always got bullied for looking asian (im mixed) but now, everyone wants to be east asian and it sort of makes me mad, not accepted. I never understood why I had to get bullied and cry over literally just existing and doing horrible things to myself just to be called “cute” and “beautiful” today for the same thing they used to call honestly really racist things.
      I feel like the best way to live through this world at this point is to stop caring about what others thing, especially in America where so many different races and cultures live amongst themselves.

    Yess!
    I used to have freckles because of sun exposure when I was little and I people made fun of them every now and then. As I grew older I also started to dislike sitting in the sun too much because of my tan lines and how they looked terrible with certain clothes paired with my growing fear of getting cancer (I’m kinda white but with the kind of skin that tans rather than just redden (I am latina, so it may be because I’m not fully white or maybe I’m just fair but not that white white, I truly don’t know) so it was harder to realize if I had exposed myself too much) and I essentially lost the freckles completely alongside the tan lines and people said I looked much more mature and that my skin looked cleaner afterwards, which was quite awful to hear.
    Nowadays I feel very uncomfortable with the trend of fake freckles and I couldn’t quite pinpoint why until midway through the video I realized that I felt off about it because what people find beautiful now are completely even, strategically placed, and perfectly numbered and colored freckles rather than the ones that naturally occur on a person’s face. I am almost sure that if I still had the kind of freckles I used to have on my face that people would still not see them as beautiful because of their flawed placement/shape/color or they may even think it’s a botched first attempt at giving myself fake ones.
    The problem with this whole trend and many others is that natural is rarely perfect, so it’s impossible to truly achieve the looks people want without some sort of intervention done by doctors, technology, or makeup 🤷🏻‍♀️

      I think the same!!! I'm a pale person but My mom and I have freckles. She has them on the face and body, and I have them just on my face. My mom taught me to avoid the sun, she always was like 'The sun did this to your face, now you have more freckles and that's ugly'. But I always thought it was pretty, I love her freckles and mine as well. Also, when I was a kid everyone made fun of my freckles, kids and adult, even my own family. Now they're a trend, a lot of people wants freckles and make some fake freckles on their face. It makes me feel uncomfortable when they fake them. Like yeah you can use them just where you want them and when you want, not everyday in all over the face or body. Is like if they just want the trendy and cute part, not all. I'm sure that they won't be trendy forever, maybe more acceptable, and those who were adding them to their make up will stop to do that because, as I said, they can decide when they will have it. I feel different when I see a person with real freckles, I feel happy when they love it and don't cover it with makeup. But hey, everyone can do whatever they want with their make up, I'm not gonna stop anybody. I just wanted to share my opinion here too ;^; And I'm sorry if is too long.

But now with all the hype around them i find myself comparing how my freckles look to others, (which most of the time they're faux) I find myself thinking they're not defined enough or not in an aesthetically pleasing position. It gives them "you need to change this so you'll become prettier" when they're already perfectly fine.. eh idont have a solution since I don't think suddenly filters like these will be removed or smthn :/ I guess all I could hope for is for people to stop believing that you have to look a certain way to be pretty..

    Honestly, you can argue the same thing about make-up. Make-up is just a filter but in real life (which might even be worse?). If you think about it, wearing make-up is actually a very weird concept (to literally paint your face and change your natural look). I've felt way more beautiful when I stopped wearing make-up because I don't look at my face in terms of what can I paint on it to improve it anymore, I look at my face as just that, my face. Nothing I can do will change my face, so I just accept it and enjoy it as it is.
    The more you give yourself access to change your face (from make-up to filters to surgery) the more you'll look at it as something that needs improving, when it's not!!! it's just a face!!

    As someone who has freckles all over my face and grew up feeling ugly for it because, in Ireland, freckles used to be seen as undesirable, I feel really weird when people put fake freckles on their faces. It's more of a micro-aggression but when I see people with beautiful clear skin putting perfectly placed freckles in light shades, I can't help but think how they have no idea how ridiculous these phenotypic trends are. If a trend is based on something somebody else has and can't change, I don't think it should become a trend at all. I worked for many years to look in the mirror and see my skin as beautiful and accept it, I don't need some shallow FAUX freckle beauty trend to give me acceptance.

    another difference between makeup and a filter is a filter will do the same thing to every. single. face. you could already have a slim face or a slim nose and “fit” the beauty standard, but because of what the filter is made to do, it’s going to still give you a slimmer face and nose. so you could already be what is considered “beautiful” and the filter will STILL change you. which sucks because it will cause insecurities for everyone no matter their appearance. and no one deserves to feel more insecure due to a filter that represents unrealistic beauty standards.

      I grew up with curly hair being considered "ugly", fast forward to now almost everyone I meet compliments my hair, and I'm so happy about it. I still have some insecurities regarding my hair but if anything the curly hair trend made me appreciate my hair AND other features, because I realised that even our "ugly" natural features are actually cool and part of the package of "natural" beauty. I have a big nose, but it's part of the package of my natural beauty. I have features that are considered beautiful now that were considered ugly then and vice versa, so if anything it only shows that beauty standards are an illusion. An illusion that is not worth us getting insecure for. But, I know that most of the damage is already done because what sticks is what happened when we were young. But I'll teach my kids in the future what I learned , that beauty standards change and what you consider ugly today might be beautiful in another timeline, so you need to look at yourself as a "full package" and not separate features.

    I think that all beautiful filters are inherently harmful, because it’s impossible to perfectly replicate a filter in real life.
    But for me the filters that drastically change your facial features are more harmful.
    If you try to do your make up, or get plastic surgery, to look like these crazy Snapchat filters, you are only setting yourself up for disaster. This look is so much more impossible than the TikTok freckle filter.
    And even though the TikTok filter is also unachievable to have permanently, it’s so much easier to do.
    When I was younger I used to take my moms foundation (which was lighter than my skin tone) and I would put on copious amounts of contour trying to obtain the unrealistic look of Snapchat filters. I desperately wanted false eyelashes, and fancy expensive makeup because I thought that it would make me look more like the filters. When I would look at my skin with foundation on I would always feel so bad, because I thought that I had applied it wrong, or I needed something more expensive, because I could still see my skin texture.
    When I was doing this, I was about 12, and inexperienced with makeup. So I think that people who where in my position, but with the TikTok filters would be more crushed if they couldn’t attain that look, but the chances of that happening is lower, because it’s also a lot easier to do.
    I’m 16 now, and have been learning about make up for quite some time, so even with cheep products that I got from Walmart and CVS, I was able to recreate the look.
    I guess the main thing about trying to look like the filters in real life, is that it’s impossible to do easily, and perfectly maintain.
    It’s easier to replicate the make up if the filter is more natural.
    If you still can’t replicate the more natural one, it’s more crushing than being unable to replicate the unnatural one.

    I legit tweeted about filters like 2 days ago, i was on SC just trying out some recommended filters and one warped my face so much i was staring at my screen like "who is that?" because the person looked nothing like me! but the filters i hate the most are the popular instagram ones that have "baby" or whatever in their title, usually i just steal filters i like from people i follow but when i go try them on my face it makes my lips look so weird. like the filter would look good on the person but not on me which is why i don't really like some filters because it comes like it's telling me "your face should already be a certain way for you to look good with this filter"... at one point i deleted SC because i had forgotten what i looked like and that forced me to take camera selfies.
    lemme stop rambling. love your video btw

    When I saw the title, I thought there was a bug in the title translation because my phone is in French and, in French, "faux" means "false. So to me, the filter name is a strange mix :')
    Thank you for this video! Lately there are many videos on social media and filters impacts, but you said things I had never heard anywhere else, and always accurate! Thanks again.

    I think another unattainable part of "realistic" filters such as this is the perfect, clear skin. We are living creatures and our skin is always going to reflect that. All skin has some sort of texture which even makeup can't hide. Yes these filters appear to be attainable in real life, but they just aren't and this just creates more disappointment and exacerbates feelings of inadequacy.

    filters are destroying natural beauty imo. they’re convincing girls to cast away their own beauty for something that is fictional and just doesn’t work irl. gigantic lips, dorito chins, shrunken heads, hips twice the width of their shoulders, no ribs, the works. it’s like a caricature of humans, half-human and half-cartoon. it’s disconcerting when i see people i know irl posting photos of themselves that are not really themselves, like AI versions of their natural body. it’s terrifying, welcome to dystopia i guess.

    You are not crazy! The silver medalist effect hit me hard, as I have been feeling that way about my looks throughout my teenage & adult life anyway. Then came along the filters, and now I'm saving up for botox and fillers. It's sort of like a parasite in my brain, and this is not spoken of, so thank you for speaking about it. Perhaps we all feel crazy about how insecure we suddenly feel about our looks, and your video spoke the first sane words about this trend.

    to be honest, i think that almost anything can become toxic if its taken too far. if someone only puts on the faux freckle filter for a bit, they might be like "oh, i could actually look like that" and then forget about it, then it wont do much harm.

  • @limshan7695
    @limshan7695 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    i dont see this as a problem tbh. if filters fuel your insecurities just don't use them. if others want to then let them be. sure i agree that we need to be educated on how we should be content with ourselves and love ourselves for who we are, but blaming filters and social media is just not it imho.

    • @limshan7695

      i think of this issue kind of like going to an amusement park ride. it's meant to be a fun, out-of-this world experience for people to enjoy, exactly because it is unlike one's normal day-to-day life. a person who takes the ride won't go, jeez after the ride ends i feel so disappointed my life is so miserable. and neither do people go, this ride is so not inclusive for people who are afraid of heights and thus can't enjoy it smh. i guess my point is that, filters, like amusement park rides, are NOT necessities and just fun little "extras" that brings fun and interesting "elements" to our lives so if it feels like an exclusive thing that can't satisfy everyone, that's coz it was never meant to!!?? when we try and satisfy everybody, it just takes away from the original thing. eg making the amusement park less thrilling and more ordinary just makes it boring, and filters becoming more realistic just makes it seem more "unattainable". i feel like we are just finding faults with everything and its honestly so unnecessary. if people complain about rides not being fun, that's on them. so if people complain about filters, isn't it just a personal problem? sorry if this comes off as offensive, and i apologise if im misinterpreting, just sharing my honest thoughts!!

      I think what she is trying to say is that we need to know how real people look like, cause filters are giving us an easy unrealistic fix, and more people (teens, children) are watching this people with filters and accepting it as the norm..... .... Like most guys I know have no idea what make-up is, they believe a woman in a magazine without red lips is a 'natural beauty', none of my friends/ coworkers have a picture without a visible filter like, no one does, I agree we all trying to look our best but every single photo /video thing that people upload online needs to be edited/photoshopped??? (I had 280 people in my online class yet nobody has a unedited real pic of themselves, they either have a anime character, they heavily edited with a face mask,a popular character that is not them, like the standard is so high they feel as if they can't put a real picture of themselves)
      you need to agree that is just twisted cause you are erasing your true self. Sorry for the long rant

      Here’s the problem with all of this and plastic surgery for aesthetic purposes. When many people are doing it does matter because it distorts the image of reality which in turn makes even more people have it since it makes you feel out of place. Also the argument that someone is “doing it for themselves” is not valid, considering simple concepts of sociology. You cannot say that you are not influenced by society when you live in a society, and moreover when you change yourself into a version that’s more highly deemed in said society (this is a largely applied concept to any moral, mental and physical aspect or institutions part of a society) . It’s absolutely baffling when I see these kind of arguments, there is no logic behind any of them.

    • @limshan7695
      @limshan7695 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mariakiwi1428 many people =\= society and according to your argument, does many people (whatever this means) doing something distort reality? doesn’t this sound like a slippery slope fallacy? perhaps we have different definitions of logic :) plus i said, education is the solution, understanding self love and worth so we don’t feel inferior and compelled to change our appearance under peer pressure or social media influence. even if we get to the absurd point of 95% of society doing plastic surgery or conforming to unrealistic beauty standards, if people understand their worth enough, dont you think they will appreciate how they look and thus not view society as “distorted”? also, if the “do it for themselves” argument isn’t valid because individuals do not exist and only societies do, then why is the rise in plastic surgery and use of filters problematic if it is just society changing its beauty standards? are you sure that the individual has absolutely no agency to act upon their own will? propensity to influence =\= completely remove agency and the potential of education !! hope this helps :/

    • @limshan7695
      @limshan7695 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SieMiezekatze yeah but i think the problem lies in a lack of education, not the existence of social media influencers and filters coz they don’t exist to spark negativity and blaming them for doing so unnecessarily destroys their purpose and any positivity they produce (eg fun!!)
