I once saw a Planned Parenthood post on ig, which was very educational and directed at young people for their safety, repeatedly use the word "seggs" and I wanted to SCREAM. 😭
It would either be taken down or shadow banned aka it won’t reach a wide range of people so it would be useless. If companies weren’t trying to keep things as PG as they are in order to cater to more sponsorship at the expense of educational videos like that, then we really wouldn’t have this problem.

I reaply hate the excuse of censorship when it comes to saying things like 'grapist' 'watermelon people' 'unalived' 'cheese pizza' because theres so many more respectful ways to refer to these things rather than turning it into something silly. "They forced themself onto the victim" "inappropriate material involving children" etc etc. The censorship is a problem too of course but the wordage people use nowadays is so disrespectful.
@@iamjustkiwipretty sure it's referring to Palestinians because people were using the watermelon as a symbol of support. But it's dehumanizing and the confusion with it sounding racist does not help
I think part of the problem (in writing format) is character limits. The respectful rephrasing is significantly longer to type, which means you'll be posting multiple comments at best. In video form, the shorter the video, the better it does - the longer, the more likely you are to be ignored by the algorithm - thus incentivising adopting the written short forms into the verbal format. Not saying it's right that this happens, just trying to explain the driving force behind this behavior. If we want to fix this, we will need to come up with a solution that gets to the root of the problem: algorithms dictating our media.
It's people's way around censorship. Would your rather them use true words and get shadow banned or outright banned and no word ever getting out? or they use code words to keep knowledge spreading? At some point something has to give.
a tiktok take that wasnt in this video id like to mention is how it accelerated the downfall of being an artist online. its like a combination of things that did though, the death of deviantart, then tiktok, then instagram copying tiktok. now trying to be an artist on the internet is the biggest headache ever. certain types of art can work/be fun in short form video, but it sucks having to put your work through this twisted food processor in order to match this medium. certain things just werent built for it
*DeviantArt is pretty dead but it's not totally dead and it's still where I get the most attention as an artist *I wish there was another website that had an inbox style following system because I don't support the current owners of DeviantArt, my art just doesn't play nice with algorithms Dx
That's an excellent point and a very sad one. And AI is another form of torture for artists- you have my utmost sympathy. I can relate as a journalist. Although what we create is different these social media platform and their algorithms have warped and threatened our industries in equal measure.
Dude love streaming, I love drawing but what I HATE is having to hodgepodge a movable camera setup so I can videotape me making my art because if its not posted on reels ppl probably aren’t gonna see it.
My boyfriend died by suicide, and the stigma around it has just gotten worse with people not being comfortable saying suicide. It makes it feel shameful when people nervously say "unalived himself". It's a gross feeling. (Edit: changed "you" to "people" because I didn't mean it directly to any one person)
its due to youtube guidelines, it will age restrict a video if the word is mentioned. theres a game reviewer i follow that has to refer to guns as force multipliers lol
it totally takes away from the seriousness of the situation. I am so sorry for your loss and i hope less people can be shitty about it. It was an awful thing to happen and i’m proud of you for moving forward no thanks to those idiots
No one is saying "unalived" bc they're uncomfortable saying suicide. They're saying it because of censorship on social media. People get strikes, demonetized, shadow banned etc. from social media websites when they say the actual word. They use unalived for "murdered" as well.

That first one about filming strangers in public is so true. The other day, I was caught in a video that was recorded by a woman in my local gym. I didn't have that opportunity to ask her to delete it. Lesson learned.
It has made me way to self aware when I’m out in public. In my country there was a trend posting people that were ugly using the name “gargamel”, these people where often homeless, addicts and people just trying to exist that got referred to as the wizard in the smurfs:(
In the US, legally people don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy in public. Especially if you're in a business that has cameras, which sucks. A business isn't just going to randomly post footage with you working out in the background. If they do, they'll censor your face most of the time.
Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not but I can't stand how much people waste food and products in the name of entertainment and monetary gain. The weird side of CLEANTOK especially bothers me. There are so many people who live stream for hours wasting soap and comet and other chemicals down the drain.

So much so that I have to avoid it at night bc the algorithm will show me horribly depressing videos and it sends me in a spiral. Im so glad you’re back to making videos again bc it honestly helps me stop scrolling so much! When my bf catches me mindlessly scrolling he will literally say “go hang out with D’Angelo “ 😂 your videos help more than you know! Another way I’ve tried to curb this scrolling habit is getting back into old video games. (I didn’t grow up playing a bunch of games) It has been helping me keep busy when I would normally scroll for hours
How annoyed are you by inconveniences? I've trained myself to stop using apps in the past by uninstalling them at night and reinstalling them the next time I want to use them. I get so fed up with waiting for things to download and install and signing in again and all that jazz that I pretty quickly just forget I was ever using it in the first place.
Same ! Deleting the app was such a game-changer for me. I've noticed a significant increase in my energy levels since I got rid of it. I've been able to focus on reading, exercise, and spending more time outdoors. It was eye-opening to see how much the app was consuming my time without me even realizing it.
I wish this wasnt gonna win. It's not all that creative, or even cool. Dumb folks are gonna like it en masse cause internet, but does every reference to the name "David" really have to be in this context?
About minors there: I used to be on the Trust and Safety team of a mobile game company (can't say the name, I'm still under NDA), and one of my colleagues used to work for TikTok. The way they moderate videos is honestly terrible, and very dangerous for young people on the platform. Having minors posting content is not safe for them, and the app doesn’t have enough ways to safeguard them. After working in the industry, I honestly became even more someone who's against young people posting anything with their identity online, and infinitely grateful that when I was growing up the culture was of avoiding that until you were old enough (I used the internet a lot, just never with my face, and barely with my name).
Tiktok somehow thought (wrongly) that I was under 13 last new years... They wouldn't let me prove I was in fact older than they were saying. My account had my favourite and most effort put in video is now lost forever... I hate how that app handles age stuff. I got an account at 14 so I could use it to make that specific video for a class and it frustrates me to no end. I never use my real name on any accounts that I think I might interact with strangers on. Some children aren't dumba$$es thankfully but thank you for weeding out those rule breakers
I think kids under 16 shouldn't be on any social media, except for supervised TH-cam maybe. It just is an unnecessary risk especially on TikTok. Most important is never post kids, these parents showing off their kids makes me sick.
Reflecting on my social media experience when I was younger, it's kinda like drinking soda when you're thirsty. Your body thinks it's getting the water it's asking for, so it's addressing the need, but only in the action of doing it. You're still dehydrated and now your body has even more problems to deal with. In the same way, humans are social by nature, and social media fills the need, but it's not fulfilling or healthy.
I teach young kids and they don't understand why other younger kids get to be on TikTok when they can't. It's so hard to explain how dangerous it is when they see kids just like them doing "challenges". I try to explain to them it's all a show and scripted by the parents but they don't believe me.
YES to the tiktok comparison to Tumblr. Tumblr was a net positive for me trying to figure out who I am and embracing my own personality. Now I'm thankful for tiktok bc it has encouraged me to approach my therapist with things I relate to. I know they're saying "everyone is autistic or has adhd now" but it genuinely helped me understand that I'm not alone in my experiences
Yes! Our phone cameras literally have a fisheye effect which warps our faces at distances less than 18" I think. We have to hold our phones FAR away, even when taking selfies, and guess what... your favorite TikToker already knows this and does it. Thank you for mentioning something concrete like this. An overarching "this isn't reality and you are beautiful" is a wonderful message, but some people want concrete facts to feel convinced that this isn't just blowing smoke. Influencers know all the tricks. The camera tricks, the filter tricks, the lighting tricks, the makeup tricks, the Facetune tricks... and even then post only their favorites to social media. We're rarely seeing them at even their "normal".
As a current resident of tumblr, i keep seeing people migrate to tumblr and introduce themselves and have so many censored words in their posts, and ive even seen someone nervously comment about the algorithm hating them for using certain words, and its so sad to me bc tumblr’s algorithm is just a chronological stream of posts from people you follow. that’s basically it. You don’t need to censor anything (except for images sometimes)
So true. I haven’t been on tumblr for awhile but I definitely remember what it was. It’s strange to see how massively tiktok has affected little things like speech
You can say “child rapists should be castrated,” on tumblr and everyone will agree with you, but if you say the same thing on reddit, you get a permanent ban.
The internet was never good for anything but creating distance between people. It would be so awesome as a pure information distribution system, but people don’t like information enough for that to ever be it’s primary use
@@DavidJones-ot8qu respectfully, I disagree with this take. The social aspect of the internet is very useful in moderation, being able to communicate with people around the world that have similar interests is very cool, like right now - we're in a comment section because we're all subscribed to D'Angelo or happened to stumble across this video on the recommended feed. It connects people that would otherwise never meet. Saying it's creating distance between people is disingenuous. What caused that are bad actors. People who are trapped in echo Chambers and continously reinforce their extreme beliefs and become a caricature. Those who puppeteer people who are already mentally unwell and try to isolate them. The money-hungry companies that make these services addictive to get better metrics for investors. These are not the fault of the invention, but the people who got power over it.

my controversial opinion is no matter how much you hate tiktok banning it would set a disastrous precedent for censorship of foreign media in the united states. its no coincidence that they started trying to ban it after waves of support for palestine grew on the platform. the casual sinophobia people spew when talking about tiktok is CRAZY.
The process started way before october 7. It's more likely that it's related to the fact that so many politicians in congresso on both parties own a lot of Meta-stocks. Tiktok is meta's bigggest rival basically. However, your point about scary censorship still stands, for sure!

Biggest issue I find with the short form industry is the stolen content trend. There’s so many people just taking stuff for their own and getting views.
Instagram reels definitely isn't better. The number of times I've been on a completely normal post and seen that many comments are just slurs or racist or sexist shit is honestly very sad.
As someone who was a teenager for MySpace- yeah it's definitely better that adults know what kids are up to on TikTok. A lot of weird, inappropriate, and dark stuff happened on MySpace with next to no oversight from adults and some of it I would never wish on any other generation.
That's actually so true. I saw some legit horrifying stuff on twitter and tumblr when I was a kid too. I dont think my parents had any clue the kinds of wild stuff you could get up to with an iPod touch
My mom found my sisters and I MySpace when we were teens and printed them out and made us delete them. We had this big talk about predators and we weren’t in trouble, but it was used as a learning opportunity. Parents can definitely be aware if they choose to and I’m sorry you had to see awful internet stuff. I didn’t escape it for long cause of the shock horror videos that my friends would trick me into watching. And salad fingers. wth was that?
My parents gave me unlimited and unchecked internet access and to this day they still don't see the problem and want to be the "cool" grandparents who let's kids do whatever they want online.

Honestly the most telling thing about tiktok shop is that most of the actual artists and small businesses I've seen on my FYP don't use it. They might have a tiktok for promotional reasons but use a platform like Etsy or shopify for sales. Like 99% of the tiktok shop content I've seen is people selling an obviously marked-up dropshipped product. Not once have I watched a tiktok shop video or live and thought "I wanna buy that".
My biggest one is it's allowed the mass apropriation of genuine medical and mental health terms, so when you try and discuss symptoms it is so much harder to be taken seriously because the weight of those words has lessened to a trend or a quirky thing
LOVE THIS!!!! Here's why your right/wrong was such a fun and interesting content route you did in the past so i really enjoyed you bringing that back. I missed the poll but ill defintiely keep an eye on the community tab! As for the bunny name, I instantly thought of Dameson. No real reason but it sounds a bit too serious for such a cute bunny doll hahaha.
I find that of the weird terminology used on tiktok that has migrated to real life, “grape” and “grapist” have been useful for both discussing something related around people who may be triggered by the real word, or as a safety measure in public spaces to warn others. most of them are not something I think should be used regularly as it disrespects the people actually facing those issues, but this one has been useful for me
Honestly I love TikTok, it’s like a comfort app to me. I’m pretty straight forward when it comes to content that I like so when I get something out of my comfort zone on fyp I just click “not interested”. I guess I managed to train the algorithm to show me only cats, art, books and aesthetic videos.
the censorship of words happens on youtube too though so i think the problem is that companies like tiktok and youtube shouldn't be punishing their creators for talking about serious topics just for advertizing money and also that advertizers shouldn't be so puritanical when they choose their audience. why do children need to be the baseline for ALL ads when they aren't even the ones with money.
Also TH-cam loved having NSFW ads for a while (as of now I haven’t seen any recently but that’s probably just my ad settings), but those were fine because they pay money to come here :)
The way you explained beauty towards the end really made my day better after months of struggling with allergies and skin issues, we appreciate all the content you upload ❤️
I wouldnt say tik tok ruined the internet per say but im concerned the effect its having on children. We still dont know the long term implications of near exclusively short form, highly stimulating, and intentionally manipulative content. Alongside this the rise and promotion of alt right/conservative pipeline content on these apps may cause wider harm also
not to mention the rampant misinformation, that coupled with how the education system is going…there’s no longer a guarantee that what we teach our kids (kindness, discernment, respect) will be enough to save them from hate/danger, or from becoming hateful/dangerous.
yeah especially towards the newer generation since they have such easy access to it (and the internet in general) and most actively post on it too, its so dangerous for these young kids to be posting themselves online
... all of this yes. but also, parents you gotta get off your phones too and parent. hahaha. complaining their kids are on it all day and losing touch with reality, short attention spans, and dwindling mental health; meanwhile not willing to take some of the blame for it or succumbing to these issues themselves, will always make me shake my head.

my gripe with the effect tiktok has had on music is more that about half the songs that blow up on tiktok, only a certain portion of it blows up, and while i like that portion, ill go listen to the full song and the rest of the song will suck. like ill be expecting the part that blew up is the chorus and the rest of the song will be more of that, only to find it was actually the bridge, and the chorus that plays for 90 percent of the song is not even in the same ballpark as the bridge. its very annoying. love that small artists are blowing up, dont love people designing their songs around this, dont love wildly different bridges that i like way more than the rest of the song

Being on YT and TT, I’ve learned more about the Ace spectrum and introversion. I have a name to what I’ve been feeling since I was a teenager and I appreciate that. There’s pros and cons to every aspect of life, including the internet
I love some forms of short form content, but I wish I had like a home screen, or somewhere where I can "storage" my thoughts, important videos and things that I love. For example the way that youtube allows you to click "home". Also a lot of things are really fleeting. Like I want to remember stuff I want to think about things, discuss with others and understand. But a lot of the time. There is nowhere to express nuance. Also trying to find a tiktok video is impossible. Honestly, as a crisis counselor who makes content about DV, the censorship is very hard and uncomfortable. I hate it. But it’s also directly as a result of Adpocolypse. So we can all thank PewDiePie for dropping a slur and causing the censorship 😬
I was studying at the library this summer in a study room by myself and I looked up to see someone filming me through the window and my stomach dropped. I’m pretty sure they were on FaceTime showing off the room, not necessarily me, and I don’t think there’s a recorded or posted video anywhere- but looking up and seeing a stranger pointing a camera at you is pretty scary even if it’s not getting posted, and I can’t imagine how it would feel to randomly come across a video of yourself online or something like that. Filming strangers is so weird and I hate that it’s such a common thing to do
I like how the title has "Here's why you're wrong" when there was like only 4 'wrongs' in the entire video, though that's mostly cuz most of the 'unpopular' opinions people commented weren't really unpopular
When folks complain about kids on an app I always wonder how they are interacting with them in the first place. I’m grown and have used TikTok before deleting my account. I had nary a child in my face, on my tl, or suggested to me. If you simply avoid interacting with minors, they vanished because your tl is curated for you. I only had other 20 somethings at my fingertips y’all. Let them have fun with their peers is all I’m saying. But call out their dangerous behavior when we come across it.
Exactly. Yeah, there are many things wrong with it, but then again, I've never seen an app this diverse for fast form content. I can post art, post cosplay, food recipes, makeup tutorials, room decorating, literally anything. There's a space for literally anyone. My art has grown so much over the past few years because of it, I've interacted with so many of my favorite niche games and fandoms because of it. I've met so many other cool people my age that I love to talk to regularly. I love it more than I hate it. And im not going to lie, I'm really going to miss tiktok when it eventually gets banned. I don’t think encouraging socialization entirely through social media is a good thing, and the diversity of content there seems to heavily contribute to that, since all of your life can now be uploaded and interacted with through tik tok. That’s probably a net negative

Uhhh...I've never even heard the term watermelon people before, is it what I think it is (racist)?
@@iamjustkiwipretty sure it's referring to Palestinians because people were using the watermelon as a symbol of support. But it's dehumanizing and the confusion with it sounding racist does not help
@@ColovianFurHelm oh jeez, thanks for explaining
"advertiser friendly language" will be the death of us all.
a tiktok take that wasnt in this video id like to mention is how it accelerated the downfall of being an artist online. its like a combination of things that did though, the death of deviantart, then tiktok, then instagram copying tiktok. now trying to be an artist on the internet is the biggest headache ever. certain types of art can work/be fun in short form video, but it sucks having to put your work through this twisted food processor in order to match this medium. certain things just werent built for it
*DeviantArt is pretty dead but it's not totally dead and it's still where I get the most attention as an artist
*I wish there was another website that had an inbox style following system because I don't support the current owners of DeviantArt, my art just doesn't play nice with algorithms Dx
That's an excellent point and a very sad one. And AI is another form of torture for artists- you have my utmost sympathy. I can relate as a journalist. Although what we create is different these social media platform and their algorithms have warped and threatened our industries in equal measure.
Yes! I have stopped posting my art but I miss that small community I built
Dude love streaming, I love drawing but what I HATE is having to hodgepodge a movable camera setup so I can videotape me making my art because if its not posted on reels ppl probably aren’t gonna see it.
As an artist myself, i absolutely second your take!
My boyfriend died by suicide, and the stigma around it has just gotten worse with people not being comfortable saying suicide. It makes it feel shameful when people nervously say "unalived himself". It's a gross feeling. (Edit: changed "you" to "people" because I didn't mean it directly to any one person)
i’m really sorry.
its due to youtube guidelines, it will age restrict a video if the word is mentioned. theres a game reviewer i follow that has to refer to guns as force multipliers lol
it totally takes away from the seriousness of the situation. I am so sorry for your loss and i hope less people can be shitty about it. It was an awful thing to happen and i’m proud of you for moving forward no thanks to those idiots
@@Mollypop_1 heard several people say “game ended themself” and I’m pretty sure it’s taken years off of my life
No one is saying "unalived" bc they're uncomfortable saying suicide. They're saying it because of censorship on social media. People get strikes, demonetized, shadow banned etc. from social media websites when they say the actual word. They use unalived for "murdered" as well.
whoever said that instagram reels are better than tiktok must be insane. i don’t like tiktok but instagram reels is one of the most toxic places, specifically the comments.

ugghh, that's annoying. Sorry you have to deal with that.
It has made me way to self aware when I’m out in public. In my country there was a trend posting people that were ugly using the name “gargamel”, these people where often homeless, addicts and people just trying to exist that got referred to as the wizard in the smurfs:(
its why i still wear a mask to conceal my face
I was 11 when I saw some random adult taking pictures or recording me :/

In the US, legally people don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy in public. Especially if you're in a business that has cameras, which sucks. A business isn't just going to randomly post footage with you working out in the background. If they do, they'll censor your face most of the time.
Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not but I can't stand how much people waste food and products in the name of entertainment and monetary gain. The weird side of CLEANTOK especially bothers me. There are so many people who live stream for hours wasting soap and comet and other chemicals down the drain.

I've been able to focus on reading, exercise, and spending more time outdoors. It was eye-opening to see how much the app was consuming my time without me even realizing it.

You don’t need to censor anything (except for images sometimes)
the only ppl getting censored on tumblr are trans women and palestinians fundraising
So true. I haven’t been on tumblr for awhile but I definitely remember what it was. It’s strange to see how massively tiktok has affected little things like speech

The internet has been ruined since money became the center of it
Ahhhh... good old capitalism

Do something kind for something, for the sake of being kind.

my controversial opinion is no matter how much you hate tiktok banning it would set a disastrous precedent for censorship of foreign media in the united states. its no coincidence that they started trying to ban it after waves of support for palestine grew on the platform. the casual sinophobia people spew when talking about tiktok is CRAZY.
I don’t think the propalestine wave and the let’s ban TikTok really correlate but this might just be my perception.
The process started way before october 7. It's more likely that it's related to the fact that so many politicians in congresso on both parties own a lot of Meta-stocks. Tiktok is meta's bigggest rival basically. However, your point about scary censorship still stands, for sure!

the censorship of words happens on youtube too though so i think the problem is that companies like tiktok and youtube shouldn't be punishing their creators for talking about serious topics just for advertizing money and also that advertizers shouldn't be so puritanical when they choose their audience. why do children need to be the baseline for ALL ads when they aren't even the ones with money.

22:31 I immediately thought of heely’s when you mentioned fashion trends and then you said it and it almost made me lose my mind😂😂
Idk who’s watching long tiktok series, for me anything more than 20min is a “airpods while I’m doing chores” type of content, I don’t have the energy to keep scrolling from part 1 to 24 every minute or so.
It feels like a crime to be this early. Seeing "uploaded 38 seconds ago" feels wrong
I was here at 17 seconds today 😅 it’s literally a serotonin boost
I love how you asked us our unpopular tiktok opinions just to tell us why we're wrong but you actually agreed with most of them.
I think Ollie would be a cute bunny name
Like LET ME FIND THAT ONE EDIT that shows how life passes with sad music pleaseee i need to see it again. 😅
Honestly, as a crisis counselor who makes content about DV, the censorship is very hard and uncomfortable. I hate it. But it’s also directly as a result of Adpocolypse. So we can all thank PewDiePie for dropping a slur and causing the censorship 😬
I’m a 60 yo who would never yell at kids to get off my lawn. I would guilt trip them into mowing it 😂
I nominate Uncle Machete as a name for the bunny, in hommage to this community's shared love for the Spy Kids franchise.
I wanted "heelys" in the 80s based on TV commercials. We've always been like this.
Filming strangers is so weird and I hate that it’s such a common thing to do
Name for the stuffed rabbit: Bun'gelo
This is the best one I’ve seen so far.
I like how the title has "Here's why you're wrong" when there was like only 4 'wrongs' in the entire video, though that's mostly cuz most of the 'unpopular' opinions people commented weren't really unpopular
OMG You should name the bunny Parsley, I think it fits them
When folks complain about kids on an app I always wonder how they are interacting with them in the first place. I’m grown and have used TikTok before deleting my account. I had nary a child in my face, on my tl, or suggested to me. If you simply avoid interacting with minors, they vanished because your tl is curated for you. I only had other 20 somethings at my fingertips y’all. I had no idea what those kids were doing in their trends half the time unless someone brought it up on TH-cam or they were grown talking about it.
Let them have fun with their peers is all I’m saying. But call out their dangerous behavior when we come across it.
My husband said the bunny should be named "Bun'angelo Lettuce"
tiktok is honestly insane because of how diverse it is! (this is a good thing)
Hopefully VPNs will work
@Speaker2400-m5i how does this effect LeBaron's legacy
I don’t think encouraging socialization entirely through social media is a good thing, and the diversity of content there seems to heavily contribute to that, since all of your life can now be uploaded and interacted with through tik tok. That’s probably a net negative
@@DavidJones-ot8qu you have a point. Though, at the same time, apps like TikTok allow you to interact with people who have youre hyperspecific interests and preferances. I wish there was a way to safely have something like this IRL though
@@beamsharkI KNOOOOOW. I hate that there’s almost no way in real life to just meet people, let alone people that have your same interests. We don’t have like any free community centers in my area (or anything similar where people go to socialize for free), and I think those are rare in general. Honestly, Tik tok is probably more of a symptom than a cause, but that’s an even more depressing thought.
YES I MISSED THIS SERIES!!! YOUR OPINIONS ARE SO BASED!
The only creator that does the "unalive" thing right is Casual Geographic, he gets really creative with it and usually is talking about animals, so it's not like describing some crime scene.
the wheels in ur head turning when u said "arboreal borealis" KILLED MEEEEEEEE
For that first one, there actually was a girl popular on… tiktok, ironically, who started talking about how people at her high school (she’s only 14) started videoing her to get a little famous. Like. Filming her from the corner in the bathroom creepy .-.
As someone on a Knit-tok, I'm eternally grateful to have found these tiktokers. I've learned a lot of new things with a mix of silly cat videos.
No one under 16 should be on it I agree 😭 these middle and high schoolers need to LOG OFF
But it was originally made for people who are 18 - 13…
29:39- Charleston Breckenridge the fourth (The lore is that each rabbit has been a companion to a scholar or professor of some kind.)
I think the bunny looks like an Oliver
I was going to say the same thing. He gives off Oliver vibes
