It’s because the algorithm will censor words containing sexual or violent content (like suicide), so they had to come up with new phrase to keep themselves from being restricted. I don’t like it and agree it unintentionally waters down serious topics/at least stay on tiktok, but it is important to note that it’s due to the algorithm and not people being quirky.

@@DavidJones-ot8qu respectfully, I disagree with this take. The social aspect of the internet is very useful in moderation, being able to communicate with people around the world that have similar interests is very cool, like right now - we're in a comment section because we're all subscribed to D'Angelo or happened to stumble across this video on the recommended feed. It connects people that would otherwise never meet. Saying it's creating distance between people is disingenuous.
What caused that are bad actors. People who are trapped in echo Chambers and continously reinforce their extreme beliefs and become a caricature. Those who puppeteer people who are already mentally unwell and try to isolate them. The money-hungry companies that make these services addictive to get better metrics for investors. These are not the fault of the invention, but the people who got power over it.

I was def too young for this, but I still experienced the age of unique, decentralized message boards, usenet groups, AIM chatrooms, fansites, and unserious MMOs and online multiplayer games like age of empires ii. I never felt so connected to people having been mercilessly bullied and ostracized since preschool. There weren’t paywalls, people shared their projects out of the love of the community, and pseudo-anonymity didn’t create nearly as toxic atmospheres as heavily integrated socially media sites like Facebook et al.

About minors there: I used to be on the Trust and Safety team of a mobile game company (can't say the name, I'm still under NDA), and one of my colleagues used to work for TikTok. The way they moderate videos is honestly terrible, and very dangerous for young people on the platform. Having minors posting content is not safe for them, and the app doesn’t have enough ways to safeguard them. After working in the industry, I honestly became even more someone who's against young people posting anything with their identity online, and infinitely grateful that when I was growing up the culture was of avoiding that until you were old enough (I used the internet a lot, just never with my face, and barely with my name).

My account had my favourite and most effort put in video is now lost forever... I hate how that app handles age stuff. I got an account at 14 so I could use it to make that specific video for a class and it frustrates me to no end. I reaply hate the excuse of censorship when it comes to saying things like 'grapist' 'watermelon people' 'unalived' 'cheese pizza' because theres so many more respectful ways to refer to these things rather than turning it into something silly. I think part of the problem (in writing format) is character limits. The respectful rephrasing is significantly longer to type, which means you'll be posting multiple comments at best. In video form, the shorter the video, the better it does - the longer, the more likely you are to be ignored by the algorithm - thus incentivising adopting the written short forms into the verbal format.
Not saying it's right that this happens, just trying to explain the driving force behind this behavior. If we want to fix this, we will need to come up with a solution that gets to the root of the problem: algorithms dictating our media.

    • @qwinlyn

What you’re missing is that the automatic censoring on all the platforms has gotten more stringent. And once you train someone to use a certain word in a certain context that word slips out in other contexts and thus the word becomes more main stream.
Don’t blame the people, they’re just adapting to what they’re forced to do.

    • @ArturGlass.C

Yes it definetely started because of the app having ridiculous censorships. I understand why saying r*pe could get censored to make sure survivors don't have to unnecessarily get triggered. I legit see people being straight up bullies to people who are less conventionally attractive just doing something. If it was a hot person it would be fine, but if you’re “ugly”, “fat” and/or visibly neurodivergent, then it’s “hahaha look at these cringe people! Point and laugh like it’s a zoo!”
I’m not conventionally attractive myself so I avoid places like TikTok which basically require you to show your face to billions of strangers to be on the app and not treated like a bot. -the language thing really grinds my gears but blaming creators is the wrong way to fix it. The language evolved because the platforms started restricting videos and people got creative. It's the platforms we need to criticize for silencing people enough to have them create a new language out of it.

while i - as a young person - can admit that our slang can be extremely annoying at times... i don't think that's really a fair critique to levy against an entire generation of people - especially when you apparently go beyond criticism and straight to hating. each generation's always going to develop its own slang and language; lets not pretend like the adults in your life weren't hating on words like "tubular" or your generation's propensity to refer to everyone as "dude". it's hypocritical.
likewise "difficulties with literary-comprehension" and "struggling with context" definitely aren't generational features. stupid people have and will always exist and the only reason why it feels they're more prevalent in today's society is because the internet allows them to broaden their reach; pinning those characteristics on the youth is an insanely-egotistical generalisation to make... especially given most younger people's experiences trying to get older people to engage with and understand modern ideals and expectations.
overall, these are pretty insane things to hate on young people for coming from the generation that created and unleashed ai onto the world... only to (now) be unable to hardly ever distinguish between ai images and the regular slog that's reposted around on facebook

a 30yo saying tubular? That's the wrong generation. That's 80's slang. 30yo is mainly growing up in the 2000's. 😂
I think you missed the point though, they aren't hating solely on the slang alone, more that they hate seeing it in the spaces on the internet they frequent and it is awkward as heck. Especially places that are more for adults.
It's the same kind of awkward/cringe if an older gen came into a younger gen chat and started saying "lmfao, that's amazeballs my dudes. Get pwned!!!" constantly.

Honestly a good way to separate kids from adults is to bring back the websites that are for kids. The reason there is so many kids/teens in adult spaces (both online and irl) is because we removed the spaces that were made for them.

My favorite thing about tiktok is how much Ive learned. I learn about animals, plants, fruits and vegetables across the world, history, science, art, music, hobbies, jobs, etc that I would have never otherwise known about and wouldnt know to seek out to learn about. Misinformation exists on all social media platforms so always do your due diligence and research.

I find Tik Tok style dancing just looks ridiculous and uninteresting because they have to stay in a narrow rectangle frame all they can do is like 20 moves, that before tiktok would have been considered things you did inbetween the dance move.

also, I tried TikTok for a bit, it was not good for my mental health. Shorts are ok on occasion, but the constant scrolling short videos were not good for me personally.
As an actual parent, my opinion is that we teach kids internet safety like we should teach them road safety etc. In fact there are a lot of metaphors between kids going outside to play and kids going online to play: It should be appropriately supervised, and kids need critical thinking skills and the ability to recognise common signs of danger, as well as feeling able to trust you if they did something they shouldn't have done, or feel weird about anything. Age limits are only as good as whoever enforces them, and simply aren't enough to safeguard kids.

my controversial opinion is no matter how much you hate tiktok banning it would set a disastrous precedent for censorship of foreign media in the united states. its no coincidence that they started trying to ban it after waves of support for palestine grew on the platform. the casual sinophobia people spew when talking about tiktok is CRAZY.

Honestly, as a crisis counselor who makes content about DV, the censorship is very hard and uncomfortable. I hate it. But it’s also directly as a result of Adpocolypse. So we can all thank PewDiePie for dropping a slur and causing the censorship 😬

Yeah i don't do tik tok. I also think that adults should be the only creators on every app. Teens and tweenss shouldn't be on tok tok or anywhere unless it's a private profile accessable by someone who gives a crap about them. I'm a therapist and a parent and i can say there is absolutely no scenario where someone under 16 should have a public profile online. Developing minds should not be exposed to the opinions and criticism of that many people, nor should they have themselves be parasocially available to strangers.

One thing I like about TH-cam shorts over TikTok is that it’s integrated with long form videos that are often uniquely poised for highly polished and thought out content. It’s like a little preview of something I’m very interested in learning more about.

I open the app and all I see is 12 13 years old shaking ass" .... my man snitched on himself and everyone around him let him do it. Horrible

just so's ya know, the long videos on the internet in general are what keep a lot of us ill people at home company while we exist in a generally miserable state of being. i sleep, clean, cook, and sometimes game while i listen to media to keep noise going to punch down the constant tinnitus in my head.
