      Yeah, I don't know where she would have ended up going with that line of conversation, whether it's pushing gender 'norms', putting a kid on the spot, the kids parent on the spot, or whatever. Glad that Celine just nipped that in the bud with justified anger.

This dude walked away from a huge deal years ago and when he came back, he still had a fanbase, plus new viewers (like me, I only heard of him in 2022, despite seeing him in Nutty professor 😅). How can trans people cancel him 😂? These people are literally the least populous demographic. "I'm rich, bish", even if he's kicked out of show biz, he'll be fine 🤦🏾‍♀️. As an autistic person, the 'everyone's on the spectrum' thing is incredibly frustrating. It's not a spectrum of 'not autistic' to 'autistic. It's more a case of 'if you are autistic, there is a spectrum of behaviours, experiences and support needs'

    • @claireconolly8355
      @claireconolly8355 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +61

      @@claireconolly8355 Thank you. I know a LOT of autistic people, and we're all just trying our best (not to say that autistic people never suck, we're all human and some humans are just garbage, but it's absolutely not an excuse for that). Usually, if we upset or offend people, it's because we've missed nonverbal cues and/or talked about a topic we didn't know was inappropriate. The fact she used it as a shield for criticism is so frustrating, because the vast majority of us get the third degree for so much more minor things and nobody cuts us a break

    • @AliceBunny05
      @AliceBunny05 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +41

      @@claireconolly8355there are plenty of autistic people that suck.. but that's because there are plenty of people that suck in general! we are not at all immune to being shitty (because we are just human beings), but it's also definitely not a defining factor of being autistic. For some people, part of their social struggles is not understanding cues of when other people think you've said something rude or offensive. Sure that's true, but not every autistic person struggles with that very much. Usually it is also not intentional, people are taught that honesty is the best policy but the only people who seem to really take that to heart are occasionally children, and autistic people who tend to take things literally and at face value.

      As someone who's most likely not autistic, I also hate it. Like, no?? I am not also "part of the spectrum", I don't live my life with any difficulties from being discriminated against, having society push you down, having your own body stop you. Why are we treating autism like this? It's not just a little bit of spice that everyone has, it's a lot more than that, and when people say this it feels so wrong, like my existence is being used to tell autistic people to toughen up or whatever else.

It was the special interests, unique problem solving, and little details that I found freaking adorable and brought the thought towards autism, not the insensitivity. The insensitivity pointed to a severe level of childhood neglect. As soon as I explained how something might impact someone else he was immediately empathetic and worked on being more sensitive and regularly checked in with me on how someone might be feeling if he wasn't sure. He was not a cruel person and didn't enjoy people being in terror. And so kind to animals, we still maintain shared pets.

    As an autistic person one of my big bug bears is 'autism spectrum' stuff. Spectrum is like a spectrum of colours. Sometimes what you're talking about isn't a colour at all, like discussing the thickness of paper or something. Autism spectrum DOES NOT MEAN IT GOES FROM MOST TO LEAST AUTISTIC. It goes from red to violet. Autistic people are on a spectrum, not people as a whole are on the autism spectrum.

      While I agree that the current use of “on the spectrum” isn’t accurate or the best term to use, the color spectrum goes from invisible light waves that are Ultraviolet, through visible color, and to other invisible light waves that are infrared. These light waves to us are effectively colorless, so the color spectrum does include colorless in it. As it currently is, the autism spectrum is from allistic to high support needs autistic. This is my TL;DR but I put it first because idk I just did
      Part of why saying “on the spectrum” isnt as much of a thing anymore though is because “spectrum” as a term refers to a sort of scale between two extremes. The idea behind “on the spectrum” was that the spectrum in question would be from “a little autistic” to “very autistic” which isn’t how it works, but also, if that is the way you frame it, should include allistic people as well to include the extreme and fit the definition. The spectrum of asd is moving towards being a way to describe the level of support needs a person has while acknowledging that there is a vast range of different presentations of autism, but it still isn’t the best fit as a name for an autism diagnosis since it’s not even a disorder; it’s a neurodevelopmental difference.

      I think the point of the spectrum joke wasn't to say that every one has a bit of autism, but more of a play on the word, spectrum. That people who aren't autistic are still, well, on a "spectrum" of people who are and aren't. That's how I interpreted it at least.

    1- her "Game of Games" show looks so much like the bully of the school putting classmates through physical and psychological ridicule in front of everybody. And you are so right about pranks ! It IS all about making the prankster laugh, not the person on the receiving end.
    2 - when you listen to the "laughter" and "clapping" during this "humour" bit, you can hear that both often happen out of sync, much too soon for the punchline ; you can also hear that both laughter and clapping are suspiciously uniform in frequency/intensity and "equalised", at these moments ; I would say with great certainty that a good part of "audience reaction" was prerecorded in case of awkward silences.
    3 - her body language during that bit clearly demonstrate that she couldn't care less about the audience in front of her.
    4 - That is a "poor me, everybody hates me for no good reason, just because I'm a woman... etc " exercise.

    I'm autistic, I got professionally diagnosed at 15 and I would explain autism as less of a spectrum between "very autistic" and "not autistic" and more of like, two different operating systems. Your brain works differently and you either are or you aren't using that system. Of course some autistic people will have higher or lower support needs, and some people will have an easier or harder time "acting" or "masking" as neurotypical/allistic, it's still not a single line of less autistic to more autistic. All this to say, we are not "all on the spectrum" it just doesn't work like that.

    "we're all on the spectrum" and "we're all a little autistic/ADHD" are comments I hear very frequently as an autistic person, and they're very often said to minimalize the struggles of neurodivergent people by making it seem like autism or other neurodivergencies aren’t a big deal. I'm not saying this was Ellen's intention, but it's still a weird and wildly inaccurate thing to say.
    Not only that, it's a mindset that can greatly set back progress for accommodations for neurodivergent people. Comparing a regular amount of forgetfulness that every person has to the frequent forgetfulness (sometimes with severe consequences) of a person with ADHD minimalizes the very pressing struggles they face every day. This type of mindset leads many people to believe that accommodations aren't necessary because "everyone forgets things sometimes", so why should some people get medication/therapy/special learning plans for it?
    Again, I know Ellen wasn't using it in that context, but it's still an insensitive, inaccurate, and damaging notion that I and many other neurodivergent people are sick of hearing.

      I think it's something I find fundamentally frustrating about "the spectrum" metaphor. its not a spectrum from "not autistic ----> most autistic," instead, the autism "spectrum" is a diverse *spectrum of symptoms* that are all specific *to autism,* but may not necessarily be experienced by *everyone with* autism. I think this is largely the fault of the organizations that want to "raise awareness" about autism and their own public communications, which get diluted and mischaracterized the more it gets telephoned, even within the mental health field.

It’s just extremely weird & gross & quite ableist to me. I appreciate you calling it out D’Angelo & not invalidating the autistic experience & community because we need more of that.
