I used to read the savage sword of Conan around the time the movie came out. The stories were SO GOOD. Each issue could be a movie. I think boys need to read adventure books like Conan.
By crum this movie was the blueprint of the sword and sandals "Viking" Barbarian age of movies. Another underrated gem of a film is The Sword and the Sorcerer.
It’s not based on the comic books comic books are based on novels. The movie is based on the novel.. and the original Conan, the barbarian movie is epic
You guys capture the spirit of the film perfectly. Barbarian is an all time great and one of the best cinema experiences Ive had to this day. I was blown away. Skipped the Destroyer release as after Godfather 3 it was the most disappointed I have been going to a movie. Not that it's terrible it's just not my Conan.
I recommend listening to Arnold's book "Total Recall"...he gives a shit ton of details about filming this...Milius was crazy man! When the wolves are chasing him, he actually used dogs that were bred with wolves and released them to chase Arnold before he called "action" so Arnold is really running scared and ends up falling and cutting himself on rocks and has to get stitched up....he also used real buzzard feathers for arnold to bite into on the tree and he had to have a medic wash his mouth out with antibiotics between takes! Milius was hardcore! LOL
I got the 4K edition of this and only this. I’ll come back to the sequel another time. But, I thought the Dolby Vision transfer is magnificent (watching Russ say the witch sex scene is shot Magnificently…) and the Atmos track is complimentary and contemporary all at once. It was my first time watching this and my husband’s billionth, so we both had a great time with it. Looked amazing considering the age also.
Great review guys. I’m excited for my imported copy of Barbarian. Was holding out to watch this until it arrived (so I could form my own opinion before hearing yours(, but I ran out of patience! This was such fun watch - I learned some stuff, I laughed and you edit these things so well. Cheers!
The bearded one calls the stand alone releases superior but i think the Chronicles is better. Love the reflective quality finish and the artwork is awesome. The discs inside have the same artwork as the stand alones. "You'll never have the Chronicles set on you're shelf my dude" haha just joshin ya. One of the best sets of 2023, Arrow also included a full length concert featuring the score conducted by Basil Poledouris. You guys might want to dive into those extras.
When seeing it in person, you're right... that box is much better than I was expecting for what felt at the time of preorder as a lesser, cheaper option. The stand-alones are still sweet though, so my joke stays 😂
They are separate movies and have different vibes, and as such they deserve separate deluxe releases. Standalone sets ftw. Don't listen to this guy! Jk, the Chronicles set is nice, just not quite as nice 😉
@russceasetheruss5360 right? That's awesome haha! The truth of the matter is all three editions are about as perfect as a release can possibly get. Arrow absolutely crushed it and giving us options was a nice touch as well as a really smart business choice to help push more discs. I think I'll give Barbarian its third spin while I wind down and crash out. Catch you guys later!
I love this film so epic the filmscore is incredible. I have to say Schwarzenegger played Conan really well I thought that his voice fit the character. I had no real issues with his performance. Thumbs up great review.
As of right now DiabolikDVD and Orbit both have it in stock. Both highly recommended-it’ll arrive promptly and packaged with care. They’re both excellent.
This was a blind buy for me and I liked it but didn't love it. The environments and set design combined with the cinematography form a convincing world and the film does have an epic feel. Unfortunately the best part of the film for me is the opening 30 or so minutes as the backstory is told, after that it goes downhill. The cheesy/campy moments really don't work for me, even if they are funny (like the camel punching). The film isn't too long but feels that way due to the inconsistent pacing and the final act seems drawn out. Maybe this one is missing the nostalgia effect for me.
Minor nitpick, Conan was not a comic book character, the comics were a licensed product of the 1970s. Conan originated as a character in short stories published in pulp magazines in the 1930s. Fun fact the original author committed suicide like five year after the first story having only written like 20 stories or something. Anyway, there were far more comics published than anything else so it is a common misconception.
After the two Conans, I watched a few other sandle & sword flicks in 4K, including the beastmaster, and red sonja. I gotta say the latter is not so bad if you can get over the horrible acting of both leads. The studiocanal looks great!
I've never seen Red Sonja, but I plan on it at some point. Arnold has claimed it's his worst movie, even saying: "Now I tell my kids that, if they get out of line, they'll be forced to watch Red Sonja ten times in a row. It must be working, because I've never had much trouble with any of them."

Could be one of my favorite releases of the year...

That cold open proves my point that a King Conan is warranted.
By crum this movie was the blueprint of the sword and sandals "Viking" Barbarian age of movies. Another underrated gem of a film is The Sword and the Sorcerer.
"Look at these, man. These will never be on your shelf." 😂 That's gotta sting! So glad I got my copies. Great video!

You ought to watch The Barbarian Brothers (1987, Richard Lynch, Cannon Films). Everything you expect that movie to be will be.
Guys, what a fantastic review. I made one as well, but bravo to you guys.
Thank you so much!
I went with The Chronicles version. Lower cost, and less shelf space.

Great review! I picked up the double set. Haven’t opened it up but it’s time for a rewatch.

Thanks, Rich! You won't be disappointed in this film!
The original film was a late night classic for me. I did it Russ style with the bangin' individual sets.
I should have gone with my gut on the blind buy, but I'm not disappointed. Everyone is a winner here.
@@4K_Kings The big box set was what I had lined up until the Amazon preorders went wonky. It's great they had both options.

@@ThisName-e9e I love how we have to scramble to find something negative about these 😆

James Earl Jones even does the Son convo with Conan

Now all we need is an EverythingBlu Steel...
@4K_Kings lol, maybe one day.

As of right now DiabolikDVD and Orbit both have it in stock. Both highly recommended-it’ll arrive promptly and packaged with care. They’re both excellent.
I think you may be too late. I’m only seeing them on the secondary market.
Still in stock at Orbit. And “1 left” at DiabolikDVD…

*patiently waiting for the kindergarten cop 4k review*
The streets have been talking... and it seems a certain guest stopped by to discuss Kindergarten Cop... had a gripe with the actress in it...

This review of the movie is all well and fine, but you guys forgot to mentioned: What’s best in life?
Technically, this is a comic book movie.
Will you be reviewing Conan The Librarian?
