Did you get your hands on one of these? Do you think Leon is problematic? Will any of our UK viewers let Russ crash on their couch? Let us know below! 00:00 Intro 01:26 Movie Review 15:27 Unboxing
LEON is accidentally unproblematic. The director is a hebephile who wanted to make supremely inappropriate love story in an action movie. The cast wound up turning it into a family revenge drama that actually captured the growth of an abused child with confused feelings for her protector without exploiting that. So by not doing what the director wanted, they made it an unproblematic movie.
Hi guys, thank you for the fantastic indepth review of our Leon release. 4k Kings is one of our favourite physical media channels, and we thank you for your support.
Hey guys I am catching up on your videos and I was always late to the game with these ZAVVI exclusives, so I had to pay EBAY prices for all 3 of the deluxe big box editions. These editions are amazing, and I wish they had continued them LEON was an amazing movie that I watched in the theatre when it was released.
Gratz boys! I own the sony 4k steelbook and damn it doesn't hold a candle to that bad boy. What an awesome release for an awesome film. Every actor perfect. Oldman just took it to 11. He is top 5 actor of his time if not #1. Hes just always incredible.
Hey guys, another absolutely stella review. Thank you. I am so gutted that guss got a damaged slip. Unfortunately, we had left Zavvi by the time Leon shipped. Guss, get in touch because I may be able to send you a new slip. Thanks again. Thanks, Adeniyi.
I find it interesting that in the midst of all the violence, the murders, the slaughter of Mathilda's entire family, including that of her 4yo brother, and being made to sympathize with a hitman who teach a little girl how to kill, it's the fact that the girl is experiencing puberty that makes you uncomfortable. You even said that Gary Oldman, who played a psychopat who kill Mathilda's family, including her sister, was the best character in the movie. Anglophones are so prudish ( ̄ლ ̄๑)
Nah, didn't say he was the best. Just asked how many people thought so. His performance is just as memorable as Mathildas, but maybe not EVERYONE agrees.
gary oldman is always good ...watch the firm about football hooligans... having said that Reno and Portman are mesmorising inthis movie... they DO NOT make em like this anymore... one of my favourite flicks never gets old!
5:10 credit ONLY to Jean. Luc wanted to take it wayyyyy further. Look up the original screenplay - it had Leon sleeping with Mathilda. Thankfully, Jean protected Natalie on this movie.
I have a whole number of titles from EB including, more recently, Leon and The Fifth Element and they are all really well thought-out, colourful and stunning to look at. I have the same opinion as yourselves regarding the J-card and I can understand why they cannot be cut smaller to fit inside the steelbook - many steelbooks these days house the discs on the right hand side leaving a large empty space on the left which would be perfect to keep the J-card (or slip) completely intact and crease free if they were cropped a little smaller. Loving the channel by the way - keep up the good work!
@@4K_Kings No, I sadly didn't - its on sale in the UK now for nearly £200 (or $250) which is far too much but that's the downside to successful limited edition sets.
I recently bought a steelbook bluray of Leon, if it looks horrible I'll still seek out the 4k but I'm sure its fine. A quintessential action Neo-noir. Jean Reno is 75 years old. Feel old yet?
Jean Reno - an underused actor... in this movie and The Big Blue, he is perfection! Natalie Portman's best role to, flawless child prodigy! it's like under a paper moon but so much more... confession I was in love with Tatum O'Neil too!
My friend told me about international cut how they go on this killing spree of drug dealers in another cut. I finally saw it about ten years ago. La Femme Nikita really set this movie up!!
We discussed it when it was announced, but we didn't do a full review until now. Typically we cover news items, and then decide which films we want to do reviews for once the titles are released.
I should get my copy (same edition) next week. I fear you may have slightly ruined the film for me though, I did not know about Luc Besson and his 'child' wife. He did seem to appreciate the more mature lady later in life though, marrying a 21-year-old Milla Jovovich when he was 38. That shows personal growth.... I saw Zavvi just announced 2x special editions of Se7en on 4K. Better get on that!
Mathilda's whole character is just insanely unrealistic which really puts a dent in the movie. It does feel like she was written with Luc Besson's idea of what a 12 year old girl's psyche is like, which is way too one-dimensional and horny to succeed at portraying it.
As opposed to the rest of the movie that is terribly realistic ? They are countless movies that doesn't portray reality like Amélie, Pulp Fiction (and pretty much any Tarantino movie), Edward Scissorhands, Forrest Gump and many others. Yet, those movies are still considered emotional masterpieces. Movies have no obligation to portray reality.
@benjamindeharo314 To be fair, Leon is aiming for natural realism more than any of your examples. But of course, it has no obligation to do so. I'd also agree and say ALL Tarantino movies don't portray reality.
@@russceasetheruss5360 My examples lean more towards fantasy, but Leon is still far from being a realistic movie. Is Leon a realistic portrayal of a hitman? No. Is Stanfield a realistic portrayal of a DEA agent? No. Is Tony a realistic portrayal of a mob? No. So why this guy expect Mathilda to be a realistic portrayal of a teenager? That makes no sense.
His criticism is still valid... Leon doesn't advertise itself as fantasy, and as far as DEA agents, hitmen, and the mob, most people have their ideas of these entities forged by media. Not many people can tell you what an accurate portrayal of a hitman is, but most people have had contact with tweens at some point. If somebody took issue with Ofelia in Pan's Labyrinth, you can't deny their complaint because there are fawns in the film and say everything is supposed to have issues because fantasy.
@@russceasetheruss5360 Leon clearly advertise itself as a fantasy, the opening sequence alone where he kills dozens of people without a sweat is obviously unrealistic. The same goes with the slaughter of Mathilda's family, it's obviously not an accurate representation of police brutality (and we know what's it's like, we've seen enough examples in recent years). The same goes with the training sequence, you don't need to know a hitman personally to know they don't get on rooftop in the middle of New York to train children to shoot. The same goes with the scene where he storms the federal building and the climax where the swat team shoot rockets in the middle of New York. There's literally nothing realistic about this movie, the premise, the plot, the characters, the events, everything is clearly a crime fantasy, so why faulting it on Mathilda's representation alone ?

I didn't know that partnership had come to an end. Interesting view....
Got this one and the fifth element, the ultimate edition, and they both look amazing!!!!
Agreed!
Enjoyed watching this episode! Kudos to you @4K_kings!
Thanks!
Goddammit, I WANT ONE! I didn't even know it was a thing until now! How do you get one?! CAN you still get one?!
Unfortunately all EB releases, including the solo steelbooks, sell out pretty quick. eBay would be the place to look at this point...

Fuck... Don't ask me why, but Suzanne Somers passing away made me feel really, really old.

I actually cut my J-cards to fit them inside my Steelbooks. It feels awful, but at the same time, I hate losing some of that info.

I picked up the original 2017 Sony 4K release on a $10 Black Friday deal back in 2021. I’m good with that one. Don’t need the box set.

Thanks for the heads up! WB sneaking one more in before year end.
I can't wait for it to arrive and desperately plead with my mail courier about what's in the box.
@@russceasetheruss5360 After seeing the state of your Leon box I wouldn't hold that against you 😅

If Gary Oldman is in a film, it is inappropriate and unseemly to judge other performances in the film against his.
He was the only one to upstage McConaughey during his McConaissance in TipToes.
Who's gonna let Russ stay at their house in the UK? Everyone!

I didn't like Gary Oldman performance. I thought it was over acting hamming it up.
