  • How to protect yourself from dog attacks? Every day we run the risk of encountering stray dogs while out walking or running. We don't usually expect any threat from an adorable creature that’s been rightfully dubbed our “best friend.” But some of these dogs can sometimes display unpredictable behavior and be extremely aggressive and unfriendly. Dogs are animals and they have animal instincts. Even the friendliest-looking pooch can attack you if something goes wrong!
We at Bright Side have collected the recommendations of experts and cynologists on how to keep yourself safe and to prevent dog bites. If you want to find out what exactly you should do when you come across an aggressive dog, or, even worse, you’re attacked, watch our new video!
    TIMESTAMPS:
What to do if a dog doesn't attack but acts aggressively 1:47
What to do if a dog attacks 3:54
What to do if you've been bitten 7:30

    SUMMARY:
    - Do not try to calm the dog down or smile at it. Animals perceive a smile differently than you do. While a smile means friendly intentions to a human, a dog will think that you're baring your teeth to challenge it.
    - Avoid direct eye contact and sudden movements. The best strategy will be to ignore the dog.
    - Do not swing a stick at the dog or use pepper spray. First of all, the wind can spoil your plans and blow the spray right into your own eyes. Besides, these actions probably won't scare the dog away.
    - Retreat slowly and carefully. Remember the main rule of getting away from an aggressive dog: do not turn your back to the animal.
    - Stray dogs usually attack if they're hungry or if they're protecting their puppies or territory.
    - Do not shout at the dog, even if you can’t think of anything else to do. The dog will perceive shouting as a sign of aggression, and this will only make the animal angrier.
    - Do not shout at the dog, even if you can’t think of anything else to do. The dog will perceive shouting as a sign of aggression, and this will only make the animal angrier.
    - If you haven't managed to distract the dog and it's still after you, cover your neck with your hands. The neck is one of the most vulnerable parts of the human body.
    - Use your weight to press the dog to the ground with your knees or elbows. Dogs can bite, bark, and snarl, but they can't wrestle.
    - If a dog has bitten you, carefully rinse the wound with soap and water. After that, swab it with alcohol to avoid infection.
    - Despite what most people think, it doesn't matter whether you've been bitten by a stray dog or a domesticated one. Either way, you’ll still have to go to the hospital for necessary testing and treatment.
    - According to statistics, dogs are responsible for 99% of rabies infections in people. The first symptoms of the disease appear 30 to 50 days after being infected.

Actually, YES, I have had to deal with an aggressive dog - twice - once, it was two dogs - I did everything wrong according to what I just watched - I faced these two directly - I charged them - I growled louder then they were barking - I made myself appear larger by bringing my arms up at 45 degrees with my fingers extended and I stomped after them with glaring eyes - they finally gave up and retreated. The other time was horrible. It was a Rottweiler. It wasn't interested in barking. It was interested in attacking. It got my left forearm. With my right hand, I pushed my hand down its throat and into it's throat. I made a fist then. A moment later, on the ground with it, I threw my leg over it's body and sat on it gaining somewhat control over the animal. I believe. between not allowing it to expand it's lungs by sitting on it and the fist I made, I cut off it's air supply. I waited and it passed out shortly after it stopped struggling. Now that I am older, I simply keep a .38 cal. on my most of the time and would simply shoot the dog if that's all my options remaining were. I am sorry to say . . .

I remember going for a walk in the Spanish hills a few years ago. About 100m yards ahead of me on the path I saw 6-7 dogs in a group without a human in site, probably strays. I really wanted to continue my walk but my sensible side kicked in and I decided to head back the way I came. A single dog is one thing but when they are in a pack is when the situation can really go south quickly.

last year I was attacked by 2 dogs. I didn't recognize the breed (they might have been mutts) but they were middle sized and stocky in the chest like pitbulls. They came running straight for me, and I stood my ground and yelled aggressively--which is usually enough to get most dogs to think twice--but these dogs kept coming. I ended up kicking--awkwardly in flip flops--the dog in front of me in the face. The other dog was trying to circle behind me, and I had to menacingly gesture at him and manuver to keep both dogs in my field of vision. After a minute or 2, the owner called them back. I escaped with no bites, and only had a slightly bruised foot from kicking the one dog. I'm just glad they attacked me, a full grown 38 y/o male, instead of a child or something.

    1. do not get surrounded
    2. do not run and walk slowly to a safer place
    3. we are bigger and stronger then dogs. make sure to not act like preys and impose your size.
    4. IF and only IF they charge at you, counter charge them. They usually do not expect it and will back off/flee.
I followed these steps and we got away unharmed.

I've grown up with dogs all my life and I know their Anatomy. I know the weaknesses and their strengths. Now this may be okay for someone who is Young or a woman. But I am a full grown man I weigh 200 pounds and every time a dog came at me to attack I faced the dog look them straight in the face and told him come on if you feel like a frog leap and I meant it. Now the dog must have known that I was not afraid and had very little chance against me this has happened many many times and every single time they turn and run or just walk away. Sometimes I even decide to chase him a little just to watch him run scared. This is not the case with a trained dog that will attack humans. In that case stand your ground show no fear look for a way out like tree or a weapon like a stick I know he said not to but it is better to whack a dog on the head from a distance then allowing them to get close. And pepper spray does work. Also the dog whistle noise maker most of the time just irritates the dog and will cause them to attack even more.

I recently got charged by two dogs, I immediately charged them them back, I also picked up dirt and rocks and threw it in their direction ( I live in the country) They turned and ran, and I ran after them down the trail. I was attacked by a monster of a vicious German Shepherd. I was visiting my father and wasn't aware of the dog, since I didn't see my father often. He was at least as large as I was and I had been somehow left in the yard alone with him. When he charged me, I stood completely still. He was confused by this but continued to menace me for half an hour, circling me. I was certain I was in danger of my life. Eventually his circles became larger and I made a run for it, running into a shed with a door with a glass window. It was astonishing how fast he was on top of me, but I managed to get behind the door a split second ahead of him. The sight of him trying to attack me through the glass was horrific and I was afraid the glass would break. I waited for rescue, being unable to alert anyone. I waited a very long time.

Some years back, my very pregnant wife and I were attacked by a pitbull that charged at us through a garage door left open. We were out on an an evening stroll in our neighborhood, I was in sandals and sweat pants, my wife could barely move, much less walk, her due date was 1 week out. When the dog ran up on us, she froze, I got between her and the pitbull. The dog lunged at me, I attempted to kick it and yelled LOUDLY, it backed off a bit, I told my wife to leave, I stayed behind as I more slowly backed off, the pit came back around and tried to bite me, I did the same thing kicked and missed, and yelled "Hey" loudly, it turned around and headed back to its garage. then from a distance, I waited to see if the dog's owner came out, I wanted to confront him about the aggressive dog (I was boiling mad) he never did (keep reading as to how I know it was a he), so we walked back home. Due to this incident, I now either take my large dog on walks or carry a pocket knife. I considered coming back later that evening with my handgun to see if the dog would try to attack again but my wife talked me out of it. We were across the street, walking quietly and minding our business. I don't know the dog's owner but some 6 months later, I happened to meet his neighbor, he was walking his two small dogs on our street, I was doing yard work, he complimented my yard, after a little small talk, I cautioned the retiree about that aggressive pit, he then informed me that he lives next door and carries his revolver in case the dog tries to attack him, his dogs or grandkids that occasionally visit. said he felt bad for the dog but the dog's owner made him that way, just a weird guy with a temper so the dog, doesn't want anyone to fall victim to the aggressive pit. I asked why he hadn't called the police, said his daughter is a deputy and she told him unless it bites someone, there's not much they can do.

This made me remember the time when I was on the road in the middle of the night where you can hardly find someone around, silent pitch dark sides of the road. Suddenly a whole pack of dogs surrounded me, didn't count but they were more than 7, I got really scared and found out that I am in their area in their time of the feast, since I have had a trolley with me, with that I tried to scare them away, for a second I thought it is working but you know it won't work for every one of them. Somehow an idea struck me to change the side of the road I am walking onto, I followed that and somehow with a more agressive behaviour than theirs, I got out from their circle and changed the side to walk on the wrong side. It helped and I saved myself............I don't know if any kind of methods people says would have helped me over at that time......since its a truth that your mind blows away when you are scared, you try to run or you do the things which you don't need to......

I work for an animal rescue and we have had dog fights. The standard procedure is to lift their hind legs and we use a specially shaped stick called a "bite stick" to stick into the dog's mouth.
I was also approached by a pitbull with a broken chain while travelling through my town. I was riding an electric self balancing unicycle (e-SBU) and immediately stopped when it ran and started barking ferociously. I held the unicycle between me and it, and saw the owner on his porch, just staring. I told him to call the dog off and the dog snapped at me. The owner looked concerned but went back inside. I'm sure he assumed I was trespassing or something, but I was on a public road. I backed away at a 45 degree angle so I wasn't facing the dog, but could see it in my peripheral. He stayed in the same barking stance, following me to the end of the block before backing off. I was mimicking the behavior of a cowering dog to the best of my ability.
On my way back to my college dorm I passed a couple and told them to watch out for the dog. They said they were going a different way, but the man said he would go by and dropkick it for me. I told him "no offense, but if you do that, you deserve to get bit. And you more than likely will."

Unstead of running I pulled out my 40cal Kahr and prepaired to fire. Suddenly his owner was right there calling his Rotty off. The dog litteraly did a four footed skid as I neither yelled or ran. I nearly shot the dog and the owner was yelling for me to stop waving a gun around. The dog ran to his master and looked at me as owner threatened to call the Police. I continued home and called the non emergency line for the Police to report the incedent. The Desk Sargent had just gotten the call from the dog owner. I related my side of the story alang with my CCL number. I was told that the Rotty had several complaints and to not worry about it.

Shouting DOES work. I've used that when I was trail running in the country with stray dogs around. My experience has been that if you just stay passive with an aggressive dog that's already close it will simply CONTINUE to attack you. You have to shout because not only does that signal to the dog that you have some energy but you, yourself feel like you are at least converting some of the fear to aggression. It's all about energy and if you are passive and fearful, an aggressive dog will simply exploit that. Instead, if you are already close, start SHOUTING and getting active. Don't just stand there and let it bite!! Fight. In my experience, staying passive and quiet with an aggressive, strange dog will do nothing but invite it to nip at you.

I had some neighbors who had an unusually aggressive dog once, he would intentionally try to charge at my relative's kids and try to scare everyone. The time I was there I stood my ground and walked calmly towards him as he was trying to charge at me, and oddly he stopped right away and ran away. While it was risky, I was feeling kind of aggressive to the dog because he was being aggressive for no reason. I hear dogs smell fear, but maybe they are afraid of rage? I'm not sure how the dog became afraid, but it worked. I wouldn't recommend this though unless it's a last resort. I'm just wondering why he actually backed off.

I was attacked by 2 dogs a few years ago. I was able to stare down the first one with an authoritative but not threatening posture and voice. However, the second one that had been about 75 feet away at the time, charged at extreme speed, biting me before I had time to react. I had been carrying a portable lantern, and, while facing the dogs, I swung it at the animal that bit me, striking it firmly on the snout while backing into a doorway, which I closed in front of me. The dog that bit me had had it's teeth ground down, apparently due to it's aggressive nature. As a result, the bite wound was relatively superficial. I did go to the hospital and received a tetanus shot. No further medical care was required, as the animal had its rabies inoculations within the acceptable prior period.

I was attacked by a pitbull from a neighbor. I was just taking out the trash that day in the back of my apartment building (since trash is usually dumped there). And then all of the sudden, the doors to the building's basement opened, and that pitbull came right at me. Luckily, I put my arm in front of myself, considering that thing was aiming right at my face. Thank god that everything went well for me, but not so good for the dog. He got killed about 11 days after that incident. It really wasn't the dog's fault, or the one who let it out in the first place. But it was the owner's fault for making it aggressive.

I was shook to my core that I froze, didnt show emotions. Was on a hike with my 5 yr old son and two nephews when a huge lab that I first thought was a dear suddenly charged us. Knowing that dogs have a pack mentality and can sense fear I corralled the kids behind me and asserted my dominance over the dog. It was a primal instinct that took over effortlessly and the dog sensed it as well. I stood my ground and fortunately the owner ran up to call him off.

Walking through some woods near a development, 3 large dogs were snarling and started to approach me. Closest trees were small pines. As they got closer, I picked out the leader who was leading the charge and figured I'd concentrated on it and put my hand in its mouth and rip out its tongue. About the time I developed a strategy I heard a blood curdling half growl half banshee kind of thing unlike I ever heard before. My good ol' rescue Doberman, Racque, was a year when I got him. About 110 pounds and all muscle. He was trained not to bark and was cooped up in an apartment complex. Took a couple of months before he got used to living in the country. He was a people lover and I never heard him growl or bark at anyone. If there were intruders on the property he' back them up against something and just stand there until I arrived.
Anyhow, here comes Racque out of nowhere. When we went for walks, he'd like to wander but was always nearby. He went after the leader and tore that dog up, the second one didn't have the sense to run away and got bloodied but wasn't own like the leader. The dogs didn't have collars and maybe they went wild. At any rate, my dog done good. Only other animal my dog killed was a groundhog but the ground hog bit first.

I'd just like to point out that climbing a tree isn't necessarily a great idea.
Most people aren't fast climbers and most dogs can jump against a vertical surface and then launch themselves up.
There's this video where a pitbull grabs a target (I think it's a toy dangling from a rope) at a height of 4 meters. (little over 13 feet)
Dog are a lot more agile than people seem to think, so if it really wants to reach you, it can and it will.

I was interrupted by a group of 8 to 9 stray dogs while i was in their territory, they were all barking at me before i started shouting at them with a voice even louder than all of theirs combined while looking at the eyes of their leader in intense anger, because i knew that dogs understood eye language, they got confused and depressed their ears in fear and when i sensed that, i started running at them at once so they all got confused and ran away from me and i chased them away for some distance, the most frightening part of the story is that i had a lecture about rabies earlier that morning 😅😂

If there is no way to avoid being bit, you want to grab the dog by its lower jaw. This will probably result in some puncture wounds to your palm, but a K-9 cannot bite down on you once you have a firm grip on the lower mandible. Once you have control of the animals head, use your free hand and your knees to pin the animal to the ground and call for assistance.

Yes I encountered several aggressive dogs.
Somehow, picking an object and hitting the dog really hard worked for me, throwing soil or sand to its face, one charged and I also charged towards it, it got confused and ran away.
Only once as a young boy I had to run away and somehow adrenaline enabled me to outrun the dog until it gave up. Lucky day that was.

I encountered an aggressive dog while I was walking home after jogging. The dog was barking, snarling at me. It's ears were swept back, it's tail was still, and it's body was close to the ground. I faced it; and proceeded to slowly back away. In MMA, you never show your back to an opponent. Likewise, I did the same thing w/ the dog. I didn't try to talk to the dog or anything. I just remained quiet. Every time I backed away slowly, the dog would bark, and I'd freeze. Then after a few minutes of this, I'd try to back slowly away again. Then, it'd bark and snarl again, and I'd freeze for a minute or three and try to slowly back away. After 20-30 minutes of this, eventually, the dog got tired or bored and ran off to some place else. And I was able to exit stage right.

I have been in this situation several times. Most of the times I would take a few rocks at hand as a total last resort if there was no others way and the dogs got TOO close, but in these cases easily backing out worked. There was one case where I was actually attacked by one, and my logic was that my foot is larger than the dog’s mouth opening so I would keep the base of my foot always directed at his mouth because it was larger than his mouth opening. Leg a little flexed so when he got in my reach I could also hit him. I think I did manage to hit him once, he kept trying to move sideways- since he also noticed he could not bite my with my foot in front but I would always counter move to keep the position. After a minute or so he gave up backed up a little and I also backed up slowly
