The Fastest External SSD for Video Editing | M1 Mac

  • This is the fastest external SSD for video editing right now for the M1 Mac. This of course also applies to any Intel based Mac or PC. In this review of the M1 Mac and the Silicon Power PCIe Gen 4 SSD NVMe 1.3 in the Thunderbolt 3 enclosure from Fledging, I go back to editing a Full Sony A7siii 4K Timeline on this external drive and compare that with the internal drive as well as the Sandisk Extreme SSD.
    For those of you that have invested in external SSDs like the ones from Samsung or Sandisk, I’m not saying you need to go out and immediately pick up one of these DIY SSD NVMe solutions. I’ve run my own benchmarks, which do include synthetic benchmarks, but also my own workflow in how this SSD performs for file transfers and video editing.

    Thanks for the video and going through all that data. It is really hard work. I think you may find that it will be easier to summarize your results if you just use tables to compare like things so that you and your viewers don’t have to remember anything. We don’t really need to see the benchmark tools running (once or twice in a video is fine just to establish what software you are using). This is important stuff to me so I will keep coming back for more. Merry Christmas!

    I just ordered the 16gb with 1tb, and I'm adding that fledging enclosure with the newest sabrent gen4 ssd's for a working drive and a physical raid for backups and long term/ slow storage some guy posted a fairly comprehensive set of test stats in the review section of the fledging product webpage where he compares variosmus drives and compares the speed to his m1 mac ssd. He claims this setup fully saturates the 20Gb/s T3 write channels.

    As usual, a great video. I have heard and personally found that there is no actual need to render prior to export if you can playback the timeline and effects pretty smoothly. If that is happening, when you export without doing a render first, the export time is essentially the same as if you would have rendered already. Give it a try on the M1.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep, I agree. I wanted to be able to address several workflows as I know everyone has their own process. I’ve worked with background render on and off. It’s a nice feature that can also get annoying if one little change is made and it wants to re-render the timeline 🙄
      But yes, I do tend to go back to double check stabilization or any kind of optical flow just to make sure. On the M1, it just makes it so much easier to do these things. I’ve never had a machine this capable and I’ve had some fairly powerful PCs in the day.
      The future with this architecture (for both PC and Mac) is bright 😎

    I love that you actually showed the render R/W values. All the TH-cam “experts” always skip over this and only compare benchmarks and large volume x-fer. Yeah its nice when you have 500GB to move that it goes twice as fast. But in practical use in your editing timeline performance and render speeds the drive speed is a negligible difference, and often isnt worth the price tag.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep. In this case it’s just a matter of paying extra for that upgradability, but otherwise the performance is pretty much aligned with pre-built solutions. In many use cases that is.
      Glad it was helpful.

      @@KevinRossRN So relatable! My first “interface” actually was a Zoom H4 which I share with a friend (we split the bill lol), so having a personal dedicated interface now (soon with drivers for M1 and Big Sur) is just great! Now, this video just made me realize I’m still not sure what to buy, I also saw a review of a Sabrent SSD on enclosure, and now this options. Maybe will just have to wait until Apple says something about the performance issues. Well I was going to wait anyway since my order will take time and I’m out of cash for now, so this was just curiosity for future investments

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No harm in doing a little research. I did look at the Sabrent enclosure first, but after heavy deliberation, I figured this one would serve the type of SSD I got and how I am using it, and having the small fan in it is nice. Funny thing that the fan kicks in on the enclosure more often than the mini. I’ve actually never heard the fan on the mini 😀
      No shame in waiting as we’ll see more updates coming in the next couple of months. I was just glad to see MOTU was taking it upon themselves to keep updating their blog with news.

    Dude, your channel ROCKS! Your videos are really, really helpful.
    Since I struggle severely with internal SSD space (and until 2h ago also with my external WD HDD 2TB - your other vid set me back into the safe zone of 200GB free space) and editing on a next-to-full-HDD via a USB 3.0 isn't fun I guess, I would follow your suggestion and get a SSD + shell and change it as soon as it dates out. Guess this is the most sustainable solution (ecologically and economically). Using a screwdriver shouldn't be too hard. Agree?

    Great video...all of your "leg work" on this video...and why I subscribed. Others have also reported this same Thunderbolt performance issue on the M1s. Do you know if Apple has acknowledged the problem and indicated if they are working on a fix?

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much!
      As far as Apple acknowledging this, I believe they are aware. They have to be. I just spent a solid two days on just this video alone (and many more before I got this TB3 enclosure).
      I’m hoping we’ll get one of those Big Sur updates that’ll fix this, but it’ll also probably be buried in the info section as a “TB3 improvement” like it’s magic 😀
      But seriously I’m really just hoping this has something to do with how Big Sur has to also function on these intel machines and it’s a kernel issue that can be patched.
      I’m sure there are a few folks out there testing harder than I am trying to figure this out. There’s definitely an Apple team that goes through these videos, the online forums and support communities looking for common issues. This would definitely be one of them 😉
      If I get wind of a fix, I’ll definitely be posting it.
      Happy to have you around here. 👊

    • @jetmartin9501
      @jetmartin9501 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @KevinRossRN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. You’re going to have plenty of bus throughput. Not sure which codec you’re working with, but this A7siii footage and the R5 footage I worked with is tough, and it had no problems.

I'm going to go for the cheeper USB C SanDisk to cut my initial costs. And correct me if I'm wrong, I believe this will be sufficient to edit my TH-cam videos from.
    Thanks again Kevin :)

    Hi Kevin, thank you for your very informative video(s). You've made me decided to buy this kind of external SSD.
    I have some issues understanding which enclosure I should buy. I want a 2TB SSD but for the enclosure from the amazon link, I have multiple choice, should I take the 0GB or the 2TB version ? If I choose the 2TB, is there actually storage capacity inside or it is just the shell ?
    Thanks in advance !

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! So yeah, the 2 TB version does have the SSD in it while the 0GB is just the enclosure.
      Mine is still going strong. I love it.

    • @VanDan
      @VanDan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KevinRossRN Thanks for your help ! Well the 0GB costs 200€ (+ shipping) in France, and the 2TB SP SSD 350€, which would make a total of 550€ (+ shipping)... That's a lot ! Do you have maybe a cheaper alternative for a Thunderbolt3 enclosure that doesn't have over heating issues or compatibility with the SSD you recommand ?

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is quite an investment. These TB3 enclosures are definitely more expensive than the usb-c Gen 2 enclosure.
      Have you found any cheaper SSD (NVMe) chips other than the Silicon power? What about the Western Digital SN750? I have two of those.
      Also, would you be opposed to an all in one like the Samsung T5 or SanDisk extreme?

    • @VanDan
      @VanDan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KevinRossRN The Western Digital SN750 is almost the same price here unfortunately. I already have a Samsung T7 (500GB) but it's already full, I even can't open the Library on Final Cut anymore. I decided to go with a Sabrent Rocket XTRM-Q (Tunderbolt3) not fast as a chip but faster than a Samsung T7. A good compromise between the two alternatives for cheaper. (350€ - 2TB). Thanks again for your guidance, keep up the good work Kevin.

      Thanks brother. And yes, a very unusual finding indeed. Fledgling sells the enclosure with SSD's inside. The 2tb one adds $240 to the price, compared to the one you put in from Silicon Power, which is $320. I'm not super familiar with the tech specs and capabilities. Can you tell me if the one you can buy directly from them is as good as the SP one you installed?

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the Silicon Power is a Gen 4 chip, which is way more than the enclosure can handle. I’ll have to double check the SSD in the enclosure...hang tight on that, but I do think you’ll be just fine on what they offer.

      Yeah, with the testing that I’ve been doing I was a bit miffed a out these benchmarks, especially on the mid tier read and write. We’re still limited by what the program is writing at, but obviously a faster drive with higher throughput will help some, but the just hope we can get some kind of update that will open up that throughput on these TB3 controllers.
      There’s a slim chance that Apple is going to come right out and admit that this is an issue, so I think a low key “update” in the code may get buried in one of these Big Sur updates...I hope. The efficiency of the M1 though is still such a massive gain in productivity for many of us though.

    That Blackmagic speed test doesn't look that fast. When I run the Blackmagic test on my DIY 16TB external SSD, I'm getting 3913 Write and 4369 Read on my Intel Mac Mini. I just ordered the 13" M1 MBP and I'll definitely check it out and see if it's optimized or not. Also, I am using NVMe 3.0 Intel SSDs. Very interesting. I'm glad I stumbled upon your video!

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it has been interesting on these M1s as far as this throughput on these TB3 enclosures. The efficiency with many tasks is so good that I don’t really notice the real world performance difference with the read/write, but it will be interesting to see if there is a fix. I need to update to Big Sur 11.2, but I doubt there’s anything there that’ll improve this 🤷‍♂️

    Are you using the Extreme Pro v1 or v2 in this video? It seems you link to the V1 on Amazon (while you write upgraded model in the text), so I must guess that's the V1 (the one capped at 1050MB/s) that you are using? Too bad that M1 (with supposedly USB4) doesn't have USB 3.2 Gen2x2 support to support the 2000MB/s USB SSD drives out there..

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s the G25 version, so 1050MB/s, but there’s also two versions of this and the 2000MB/a version as well, so it’s pretty confusing.
      And yeah, unfortunate about the throughput on these TB3 controllers.

    Hey man your video was great, I learned a lot. I hope you can help me on my Imac 2017 27 inch. cuz its getting slow now when I do video editing and graphics what would you suggest for the external hard drive to be able to speed up at least? Do I need to use and work directly on the external hardrive with new mac OS? and use the old fusion drive as my back up files? Thank you!

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends on the program, but for video editing you should be able to work on the external without issue. I would recommend at least 1,000MBs read and write because you’re not going to reach speeds beyond that (typically), because the limitation will be with the CPU and GPU reading and writing.

    Thank you for the amazing video as always. If I want to edit on a Mac Mini M1, will it be faster to edit if the footage (both source and output) on this SSD enclosure? I'm no concerned on transferring these files but I want to know if export time is faster on this SSD

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The difference between the external and the internal is going to be negligible with export times, but keeping the source files and output on the external is a very common practice, and something I still do.
      I recently did an update to this video where I got almost the same export times with internal vs. external.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you looking at one of the Gen 3 Samsung options? One of the reasons that helped tip me over to SP was that was able to pick it up at about the same price.
      I then went down the rabbit hole of SP data/reviews to find that although it’s not what most would call a household name (generally speaking), the brand seems to have quite a bit of a following in the community.
      But Samsung is probably one of the first SSD brands that people think of. It’s where I started my research.

    • @KevinRossRN
      @KevinRossRN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So do keep in mind that the Gen 4 SSD will only perform as fast as the enclosure will allow. I haven’t tested the Sabrent, but others in the community here have and some reported good results while others had a mixed experience.
      The real difference between the Sabrent and the USB4 is the comparability with non thunderbolt devices.
