Deprived, Homeless & Abandoned in 'Ocean City' - The Dark Side of Plymouth

  • The City of Plymouth on the South West Coast of England, was once one of the most important cities within the British Empire, however now its one of the most deprived and poverty stricken cities in the UK. Having some of the highest rates of homelessness and poverty across the United Kingdom. With shocking statistics like "over 1 in 3 children in Plymouth are growing up below the Poverty line", adding to the cities woes Plymouth this year has been voted as the 2nd dirtiest city in the UK and national tabloids describing Plymouth as "Grim" and one of the worst cities in the UK. I went to 'Ocean City' to see for myself if Plymouth was as grim as they say! What i found on the streets of Plymouth shocked me... countless homeless people living on the streets and an overwhelming number of closed down, abandoned shops. Plymouth City Centre has been hit hard with streets filled with derelict and abandoned buildings right in the heart of the city. It was during Street Interviews that I truly got a grip of the desperation & depression felt by those that feel abandoned on the streets of Plymouth. What has happened to this once great City? Will anything change for the city of Plymouth and those that have been hit hardest?

Mate, you are doing a great educational service showing these areas. Plymouth? But what really gets me is that these places are just left to rot. And the homeless just left to get sick and die. What are the local councillors doing? Where is all the money going?

Joe, you can go viral nationally if you get a homeless person to put their tent up in the garden of a migrant hotel and film what the police and council thugs do to them. There will be national uproar. Please be the one who starts this stunt to expose the double standards suffered by British homeless people.

Honestly, i was born in Plymouth and live not far now from there. There are so many beautiful places in Plymouth. You literally just went to the only places that have been abandoned. Ive lived in and around the Plymouth area since 94.. Its always been a tale of two cities to some extent. The super rich and then the average person getting by but it always had heart. It was also a nice place to spend time.
Now me and my family are just about keeping our heads above water. I never go down the town anymore and i used to go in at least 3 times a week. Theres nothing there anymore the heart and aoul has gone from the place.
Some of those buildings you showed have been empty for decades.. others more recently. The town started to decline when the frigate's where no longer based in Plymouth.
I live in the university area and can only comment that post covid the number of students has never seemed to return to what it was. But still theres student housong everywhere and the average family is struggling to pay the bills.

The answer is society in general. The key problem is we've been spoon fed the "American dream" which is based entirely on selfishness and every man for himself. We need a return to core British values of service to others, responsibility for self and care and commitment to a bright future for every single person, no matter what their personal circumstances.
No government, be it Labour, Tory or Reform UK is going to fix it. Fact!

The 'beautiful church' in the city centre is The Guildhall, not a church. The 'derelict office building' next to the Reel Cinema - closed because we now have two multiplexes in the city - is the Athenaeum Theatre, and is used by amateur companies to stage their work. It's used more in the autumn and winter than the summer. There is a luxury motor yacht builder in Plymouth and once they've had their seatrials they are often tied up alongisde in one of the marinas prior to being delivered to their owners. Tinside pool is a saltwater pool, and is open during the summer.
Plymouth has a lot of poverty, but it's helpful if you can get your facts right when you talk about it.

Plymouth may be grim but most towns and cities in Britain have deteriorated in the last twenty or so years.
Many high streets are now boarded up, charity shops or pound shops. Wages don't cover people's expenses quite often if they are working. Violent attacks with knives often happen in some towns..I don't believe British people are lazy, Students turn up for classes at colleges and they have no one appear to teach them. I know that from personal experience. Television has been dumbed down. I find some programmes absolutely insulting by the level of inane stupidity.
I recently travelled and went to a bus station where drug addicts were openly begging in broad daylight. It's accepted as a normal experience.

Union Street has never been a high street. It serve the Navy. The city centre has all the good shops, none boarded up. A large very busy Mall. The Barbican has tons of tourists so does the Hoe, 1000,s of people every month. The city is in good order, with massive amount of money modernizing the main shopping streets. Right now. There are four parallel shopping streets, not showing any decay. Many annual events both there and the Barbican and Hoe. No sign of slipping into the decay seen around the country.

Hi Joe - I have subscribed to you - it is very disheartening to see Plymouth - which I had such fond memories when I was at Plymouth College of Art and Design - doing my HND Btech Photography course from 87-89 - Union Street was always a little dangerous primarily of when Royal marine fights and Navy .. but it was thriving ... it really is so sad to follow where you going .. where I used to hang out ... its become a dead corpse or a zombie .. yes there ae little bits like the Barbican and marina ... but you cant cling on to little patches and say Plymouth is alright ... because there is too much thats gone ... I would say prob started with Tony Blair back in the late 90`s when he took over and accelorated with David Cameron ... its complete neglect by the politicians and councillors .... how on earth the town councillors live with themselves ... maybe theyre on the WEF payroll too .. Joe be great to meet up for a cuppa and chat .. not sure that I have all the answers ... and it is a tall order to start to gut the rot of society and kick start the economy and rejuvenation of our towns and cities .. but something has to happen ... otherwise England will look like a third world ! Keep up good work Joe and hopefully chat soon my friend - Best Wishes Will

About a week ago another well known (to the neighbourhood) person with issues set fire to his flat putting the whole block of residents at risk. A friend of mine has had an ongoing issue with a neighbour in the block opposite to him for several years now, the council are fully aware of him but won't do anything, he recently put his own windows through with a hammer. The city is full of people like these.

You visited to Cornwall street - why not highlight the many excellent food establishments in the Pannier Market? You were on The Barbican - why not show the thriving independent stores? Every city in the UK is struggling, and we absolutely should recognise and highlight those areas and call on the government to help rejuvenate and support our most vulnerable but don't bash an entire city based on some of its most deprived areas just for views.

🎉🎉🎉 Good Morning ☀️ from sunny California, I’m only at minute 5:00 and I just have to ask: What the heck happened here to completely destroy a nice looking area(Well back in the recent past)? Big companies doing business there?
Now around minute 8:00 , The area there is very mixed with old but beautiful buildings and even a lot of positive signs and graffiti, So what really happened? Do you think that there’s any chance of it coming back? Just very sad 😔.
Now around minute 13:00 , Does any of this Real Estate have any value left in it? Do you think that the Drug situation came after the colapse of City? Or was it part of the colapse? So why do so many people still live there? I see lots of traffic in different parts of this video.
15:56 Looks like the city has so much potential, what has happened with all the huge property owners? How can you just walk away from some of these huge investments? This just blows my mind.
18:32 so many people walking around, is there a major city right around the corner?
So many beautiful expensive yachts , where do these people live?
There must be a nice part of Plymouth that you just aren’t covering today.
Anyways… Thank you for this incredible tour of the area. You’re crushing it JoeFish.
Congrats 🎊 on your channel growing.
You know I’ve been here with you from pretty much the beginning and I’m really enjoy watching your content getting better and better.
Like I’ve said before; Keep on filming and I’ll keep on watching.
    Blessings,Carlos ✝️🙏❤️😊🇺🇸

We used to live in Cornwall just across from Devenport and Plymouth, back in the 70s. It was a very different place then. Certainly not the decaying place it has become today. I hardly recognised it from your video. Very sad. Britain is fast taking on the appearance of a third world country. When I see all the filth and rubbish on the streets of so many of our towns and cities I cannot help thinking it is just a matter of time before we experience an outbreak of some awful disease.

You're so right about Europe and buildings. Never do they let historical significant buildings fall into disrepair. Especially sad when you mention all the unique rich historical impact the UK has had. Tragic, what is going on?

They do - but just not right in the middle of cities.
Go to France - where there is no equivalent of the National Trust, and you'll see loads of beautiful but abandoned buildings in the countryside. I'm not talking small domestic houses here, but large buildings.
So yea, most European countries make sure their old buildings in their cities are well maintained and cared for. But go out of their cities, and it's a different story.

    • @Heaven-dy9lj
      @Heaven-dy9lj 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@robtyman4281 Central Europe, in my experience look after their buildings and maintain them. Birmingham for example has eradicated most of its old buildings, instead of maintaining them. Sure new buildings in UK city centres, but majority of buildings gone. Prague for example the ratio is the opposite -they've kept their buildings.
As the video points out the levels of degradation (shops closed etc etc) as seen in Plymouth centre, is absent in most Europe cities. IME
