  • The City of Bristol has more people living Homeless in Vehicles, Camper Vans and Caravans than anywhere else in the UK. Bristol has been Named 'Caravan City' by the National Tabloids due to the Numerous Sprawling Homeless Encampments across the City. In this video I visit the homeless camps across the city, what I found was shocking levels of Poverty, Deprivation and Depression. Homeless People living in decaying Caravans amongst abandoned vehicles and Caravans. In Part 1 of Caravan City we headed to the Clifton Downs area of Bristol, in Part 2 we uncover the full extent of the Housing Crisis in Bristol. What I found was thousands of people living homeless in vehicles and Caravans across Bristol, however alongside the Homeless people with no other alternative other than Living on the Streets are a community of Van Lifers, people who choose to live full time in a Camper Van or Motorhome, Van Life as they call it. My return visit to Caravan City was a shocking one, hearing from the Homeless people and residents of the surrounding properties in Street Interviews answered a number of questions that so many people asked in Part 1... Buckle up, if you thought Caravan City Part 1 was bad, we barely scratched the surface.

Our housing crisis should have been sorted out years ago. There will always be the argument of running out of brown belt land and avoiding green belt land. My town has tried to provide housing by converting offices into flats, major problems… unaffordable and nowhere to park.

I don’t feel like you are being very fair with the way you are portraying these peoples lives, and the feelings of residents. Someone could legally park most of those vehicles on a residential street and they would still be an eyesore whether they were lived in or not. some people might not want any ugly metal boxes with wheels to litter their streets at all, but you can’t control who or what parks outside your house. Why are you casting everything in such a negative light? Humans have lived unsettled lives for millennia and maybe being nomadic in the modern world just happens to look like living outside your friends house in a van

Now check out how our Governments are giving millions to a war in Ukraine that has nothing to do with the West. Then people in our country are homeless or not enough council houses built. As an American, I really love Joe's content. He shows us how life is in the UK from the perspective of people who don't usually have their stories told. Yes it is a bit depressing and not as glamorous as other travel TH-camrs, but it is the truth! These problems are not only happening in the UK (as in regards to homeless and un-affordability) but also in the US. We both have very similar issues going on. Most foreigners (especially from underdeveloped countries) believe everyone in the UK and US are filthy rich and they have money, which is further from the truth. Most of us are just trying to get by, work out jobs, pay our rent/mortgage, build/take care of our families and live a simple, happy life. I can tell Joe really cares for the UK and his fellow countrymen by telling their stories through here. Love the content Joe, keep up the great work!

I wish more people could understand/accept why this is happening. If you continually import nearly a million people into the country, year after year, then it drives pressure on wages down and pressure on accommodation up. What we see here is the result of this.

    • @thelastemperor3704
      @thelastemperor3704 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +22

I've argued this for years but apparently that makes me a racist bigot rather than someone who looks at immigration from the aspect of the economy. The first guy interviewed mentioned Brazilian Deliveroo riders, do we really need to import people to work for Deliveroo who then need housing, welfare, healthcare etc? Successive governments have created the low wage economy we now find ourselves with and it's not going to change anytime soon. The fact that even discussing immigration has been, for many years, restricted by calling people racist etc for daring to dispute what's going on has only hindered any meanigful debate.

@@danneal6510 TBF homeowners will have bins outside their homes for trash and recycling and occasionally the overflow will be in bin bags, all OUTSIDE the home waiting to be collected. IF nobody came to collect your household rubbish, the rats, cats, and squirrels would soon be in it & have it strewn all around your home. These people live in a tiny space with barely the room to move, so have no option but to put their trash/rubbish outside. However with no weekly or bi-weekly or monthly trash collection services and I'm going to guess, many have no means of transport to dispose of the trash themselves at a local dump, I can't see what alternative they have.
Maybe it's time to accept that these "communities" are going to be around for a long time and provide them with large dumpster bins for their trash/rubbish and maybe portaloos would be a good idea too. I did watch an Australian video, where tent cities and van dwellings have now been accepted and land is being provided for these people, with dumpsters, toilet facilities/wash facilities etc & local street cleaners are sent to clean the area regularly, as they do local high streets & residential areas etc.
Not as a long-term solution, but as a short-term solution, working with the homeless displaced families instead of AGAINST them, whilst the local governments work at building homes and finding cheap but long-term solutions for the lack of housing. After all, most of these people, simply have no choice, life is already difficult for them, with many living in extremely cold damp living conditions and no means to cook a hot meal, so why make it more difficult?

My 28yr old stepdaughter has worked in same job since she was 16 and rents a converted garage (Granny flat) for £700 per month and she's one of the lucky ones. Council &Housing Associations waiting lists are unrealistic and despite housing developments springing up all over only a small percentage cater for social housing. Affordable Housing they say but in reality that's Affordable to ppl who qualify for mortgages. Plenty houses recently built in the Montpelier area but no upgrades to local medical facilities etc.. I've no solutions to these problems but then again I'm not a politician paid silly money to do so. Well done Joe for the video, if I'd known you were filming near Greenbank cemetery Id've invited you in for a cuppa

Meanwhile in the northern town I live in there are houses sat empty because nobody wants to come and live here even if you can buy a 3 bedroom semi for £100k and the average rent in the town is £600pcm.
You can't tell me this country isn't seriously messed up when you have younger people like my niece leaving a town like mine to go to university to study medical research, then to get a job in one of those cities further down south and add to the already ridiculous housing local shortages in those cities.
It's like a mass exodus of our young from our towns to the cities where the professional jobs are because they think it will make them more wealthy but in reality I'm here earning £30k per year and paying £250 per month mortgage but then you've people in these cities earning £50k per year but half of it goes on rent to begin with. Then the cost of living as whole is higher in those areas such as food costs. Where in a city can you get a loaf of bread for 75p like I can in my town? So they actually end up worse off financially overall.
My belief is that if true levelling up had been carried out whereby the decent professional jobs in this country were spread out evenly rather than concentrated within just a relatively small number of cities then the people would naturally spread out more to cover those jobs and those areas where the housing shortage is most acute, such as Bristol, could be relieved somewhat. Then we wouldn't have people in caravans at the roadside in Bristol whilst we've perfectly good houses sat empty in my own home town.

Rents are very expensive put bills on top of that and for the average person that can account for around 70% of their wage packet. For most people that means they can only exist living off debt. This effectively means there is no real point in working. Landlords often sell properties putting the tenant needing to have up front month in advance and deposit plus fees to rent another property. Concerns around living on a caravan in an unofficial site would be around health and safety.

Let’s level with people here and not beat about the bush.
Bristol is a very ‘trendy’ and ‘artistic’, ‘hippie’ city.
It has high house prices and many rich kids from London have moved there in recent years.
This has pushed house prices up, and not enough new properties have been built to deal with the increasing population.
BUT…. Many of these people are choosing to live like this as they want to be in Bristol.
There are hundreds of towns up north in England where you can buy property to live in on a modest full time income. They are not willing to move out of the central areas to less expensive suburbs or even other towns, where they could afford to live in a house if they had a regular full time job.
There are also clearly many socialist agitators, who are trying to make a point, that everyone should have free/government subsidised housing, so are intentionally parking their vehicles in the most expensive areas; it’s pretty transparent really that it is political and not simply an inability to find a home to live in.
At the end of the day, Bristol is a highly middle class city, with high house prices and rent, there are plenty of places around the country people could live, but many people are CHOOSING to live like this.
Having said all that, I have genuine sympathy for the native Bristolians who have been out priced by Wealthy Londoners and at the bottom end , migrants moving from overseas.

There is something fundamental important to this scenario along with COL , that is the price of caravan and camping sites has rocketed ,just 10 years ago a night on a site was a low as £3.00 a night , now many will charge as much as £50.00 a night ! With majority no less than £30.00 ,driving out many who would of camped on site even in winter places could be found ,this pushing out of the people unable to afford the outrageous prices in the UK is surely part of the problem a long with COL , there needs to be sensibly priced campsites ,its not rocket science just that old thing greed . The UK is lacking behind everywhere else I've seen in regard to spaces available ,taking into consideration the huge growth in alternative accommodation and the ridiculous prices to rent properties something should be done ,there are plenty of sites that could be used ,its a case of priorities ,and less snobbery and one upmanship ,something the UK needs to focus on ,it does not help shutting down areas here and there with signs saying no overnight parking ,that only diverts the issue to other areas .So council's need to act and open sites up with sensible costs ,or at least supply faculties for waste .

This is just the beginning as housing will become more and more unaffordable for people.
Caravan and tent cities will begin proliferating throughout other towns and cities, just like in the Land of the Free, across the pond.

    Some people won't believe this...
I'm mid 50's worked 37 years in the NHS. Brought up four children and now face this lifestyle as a real consideration. The cost of living and spiraling rents mean I will soon have to work more than full time hours to make ends meet.
It's a ridiculous way to live. Millions are now close to this point with no clear option for their future. I'm holding out till the end of the year, once my rent goes above 1.2k I'm out, whatever way I can.
If you're young, migrate if you can.

Good grief!! What an eye-opener! But I'm wondering why I'm so surprised considering I was brought up in the UK and experienced homelessness as a youngster. Housing, and affordable at that, has always been a low priority in the UK. I remember having to wait several months for a flat to become vacant after I left home. It's a combination of high rents, not enough housing, no community support, social division, and that little or no priority in this is given while the majority is concentrated on economic freeloaders coming across the Channel - most of whom are. It would be nice if homeless Brits could also be put up in expensive luxury hotels at the taxpayer's expense! Since I left I don't think i've seen anything as bad. Great video. I look forward to more.

Fascinating, but also sad and shocking video. I was a student in Bristol in the late 1980s and whilst Bristol was a great place then, at least when the sun was shining, I never could have imagined that it could have become so socially and economically divided that thousands of people would be living in caravans without running water an their own toilets 30-35 years later.
I understand that this situation was on a couple of the mainstream news channels (I think Sky News and GB News) a couple of weeks ago, but it needs to be a headline story on the prime time news bulletins e.g. 12 noon, 1pm, 6pm, 9pm, 10pm on all the major mainstream TV channels - BBC, ITV and Sky.
Also some good 50-60 min documentaries and/or current affairs programmes about this for more in depth coverage for the rest of the (non-TH-cam watching) population.
